Author note: Sorry I haven't updated in a while I have been very busy since the start up of UNI again. It's been hectic to the point that I can't even remember when I last updated. Lucky for you this is actually quite a long chapter considering I got stuck at 600 words for ages! I won't promise another update but I will say I will try and write at every spare moment that I have!
If you can't remember what happened last chapter, go back and read it as I can't be bothered to go back and do a "What happened previously".
Have fun and enjoy! Read and review!
It didn't take long to load the equipment into the back of Gus' car and drive over to Robert's house. Shawn could tell that they both had questions but Gus was surprisingly tight lipped. Shawn knew that he didn't appreciate working on a case seemingly unrelated to Dr Blinn's murder and Buzz's mind was set on proving the existence of ghosts which Shawn didn't have the heart to say to him that he didn't think they existed.
Gus pulled up outside the house and Buzz unloaded the equipment whilst Gus walked forward and knocked on the door. The door opened almost instantly and a relieved looking Robert welcomed them all inside immediately.
"Hi, Robert I'm Shawn" he introduced himself.
Robert gave him a watery thankful grin, "Thank you so much for coming. I know you probably have loads of other stuff to be doing right now"
"Not at all" Shawn interrupted with a smile.
"Ooh! I gotta cold spot" Buzz grinned with excitement and everyone looked over in interest.
"You're standing over an air vent" Gus remarked unimpressed, but it did not shake Buzz's enthusiasm.
"Last week, all my paintings were upside down and rearranged. Sometimes I get the feeling that my furniture has been moved about"
"Have you actually ever seen any of this happen?" Gus questioned him.
"Well no, I just come into a room and everything isn't where I'd left it" Robert explained looking down, feeling almost embarrassed.
"You do believe me don't you" he pleaded.
"Of course we do" Shawn assured him and Buzz looked over grinning. Gus gave a small reassuring smile and Robert sighed.
"Why don't you guys stay the night? Then you'll see. You don't know what it has been like. I can't sleep, I can't concentrate…"
"Are there days when you can't remember what you've done?" Shawn asked, watching as Robert made small paces and put his hands to his head in exasperation and worry and he nodded.
"Sleep deprivation can do that to a person" Buzz nodded.
Robert's eyes were watering when he took them out of his hands. His hands were shaking and his eyes were red and puffy. He seemed to be trying to keep his emotions bottles up inside but seeing the concerned faces around him he immediately felt the attention, and like anyone would, his sobbing escalated. The severity of the situation came crashing down on him, he had three strangers in his house, investigating, to try and find the person who had been silently torturing him for years. The prospect of the unknown was scary to anyway, he would have been a lot less afraid if he had a face to put up with. His mystery stalker was a complete distraction to him, making him paranoid and destroying his life.
"Will you stay the night?" Robert begged, clinging onto Gus who was stood closer. Gus immediately grabbed his hand back and wiped it on his trouser leg.
"Of course Mr Dunn. Don't worry, get some sleep. We've got your back" Buzz promised and Shawn turned his head in shock at his response but he wasn't exactly going to bail now.
"Really?" Robert sobbed in disbelief, looking up giving everyone a clear view of his red puffy eyes.
"We'll be right here. I promise" Shawn reassured him and Gus looked over looking a little angry and a little scared. He seemed really anxious about something.
Robert seemed in no state to do anything else and so Shawn led him through to his room and to his bed. Robert didn't complain, he didn't have the strength to argue, to say that he didn't need to sleep, even when he obviously did. He obviously understood that he needed to build up his strength again after having a breakdown and knowing that the others would be staying the night and wouldn't be going anywhere was a huge comfort to him.
"He ok?" Buzz questioned eventually when Shawn returned, running his hand through his hair in exasperation.
"Yeah, he's a little out of it. He's sleeping now" Shawn replied.
Gus was the sensible one while Shawn and Buzz stood awkwardly as he un pulled one of the sofas into a double bed. He realised that that was the only bed meaning two of them would have to share and the third could sleep on the other sofa which unfortunately didn't fold out to make another bed.
"Well this is going to be fun" Gus muttered sarcastically.
Shawn obviously didn't detect the tone as his face turned upwards into a grin and he replied,
"What's a little spooning between old pals, huh, Gus?"
Gus just frowned before letting out a bitter laugh.
"Are we seriously gonna stay the night? I doubt this guy is even haunted. Did no one else spot all of the hair dotted around this place? Long and red? I doubt it belongs to him"
Buzz perked up and his eyes zoned around the room before moving over to a spot on the sides and finding a long stray red hair on the mantel and holding it up for Shawn and Gus to see.
Shawn's expression didn't give anything away as Gus narrowed his eyes on him.
"So what is it then? You're saying this guy's ex is 'haunting' him?" Buzz questioned, believing it entirely to be possible that his ghost could be a real person, the perfect explanation to why his equipment wasn't picking up anything paranormal.
"Well I guess I can see why this guy is single" Gus scoffed. "Let's check his photo album, I bet you there is some red head in there"
Shawn only sighed as Gus and Buzz walked over to the book case and found his photo album and began to look through it eagerly before pointing at it triumphantly.
"Look at that, he's put a huge X through the middle of her photo" Gus commented to Buzz who was stood next to him.
"Should we tell Robert?" Buzz asked, wondering how it was Shawn and Gus usually did things.
"No" Shawn spoke aloud, drawing attention back to himself.
Buzz frowned and raced over to Shawn with confusion. Why would they not give Robert security by telling him who was behind this?
"Was this some sort of test? Did we pass? We found the ghost!" Buzz boasted.
"Yeah Shawn" Gus interjected, "Cos I rang you about Dr Blinn and you haven't been any help about unveiling his murderer!"
Shawn looked openly shocked for a moment.
"Shawn?" Gus stated, trying to get his attention.
"It's no test. You'll find the hair is from a wig and the ex-lives in Palo Alto and is there right now. She would not travel for hours just to rearrange furniture"
"So it's not the ex-wife" Buzz stated again confused.
Shawn sighed again. How was he supposed to explain, he was in the unknown himself. Sometimes he didn't know he knew something until the words came out of his mouth. Palo Alto? He wasn't even sure where that was. Near San Francisco he thought.
"Look, I don't know much about what is going on here either, ok?" Shawn moaned rubbing his eye with his right hand before resting it again on his thigh. The gentleness of his tone caused both Buzz and Gus to sit down so they were on the same level.
"I just feel like…. We should be here. Part of me hoped it could be real which is why I asked you Buzz to be here with all your technology. I am pretty sure I know who his ghost is but it's not exactly something I can tell him. I never told you why I was in Chicago did I?" Shawn asked himself rhetorically but Gus interjected.
"No, you zoned out before you could say" Gus realised, believing that there was something huge he was missing.
"I was at the HT Windsor Facility" Shawn revealed after he had looked around and made sure he said it quietly enough as to not wake Robert.
Gus gasped, "That's the premier mental health hospital in the country"
Buzz's eyes widened with a realisation. "Do you mean that…. Robert has some sort of mental problem?"
Shawn looked at him surprised at how easily he was able to make the jump and nodded.
"So… he's haunting himself" Gus realised.
"I think so" Shawn agreed before unfolding the blanket and lying down on the half of the bed he declared his.
"Wait, we're still gonna stay the night?" Buzz questioned.
"We promised we would" Shawn told him and Buzz just nodded with acceptance and claimed the sofa and so forcing Gus from sitting. Gus then crawled down next to Shawn and grabbed the other blanket and draping it over himself.
Gus sighed and turned his head to see Shawn grinning right at him about to laugh.
"We're not SPOONING Shawn!" Gus told him crossly before bursting into laugher.
Buzz had simply smiled before resting his head on the arm rest and closing his eyes. Neither Buzz, Gus or Shawn had noticed the figure who had been listening by the door.
Gus and Shawn lay there awake for a while before Gus drifted off. Shawn lay awake, his hand twitching and his brain was gently reminding him every three seconds that his ADHD medication was wearing off and he hadn't anymore with him for the morning. He made a mental note to himself to start carrying an emergency one on him for future unplanned sleepovers, not that he expected to have many but he never knew, he was in charge of making his own destiny, not just play out a role he had already created for himself in his head.
He eventually made it to sleep and his visions were sharp and fierce. He had the same dream he had the other night about the fire. However Shawn became surprised at how fierce this vision was. He could see the flames surrounding him, his friends sleeping unaware that the room was filling with smoke and he watched Buzz start to cough.
It was then he realised his eyes were open.
So does that count as a cliff hanger? Sorry about that!
