Prompt/Iron Chef: Another Random Pairing Challenge. This year I got Rita and Jake.
I swear, Helen has no idea how lucky she is to have a man like Jake.
What I wouldn't give for someone who actually stood by me through thick and thin, unlike the two clowns who I wound up married to. Helen talks about him flying off the handle all the time, but I'm never seen him act anything but friendly, even timid. Sure, he's a bit of a homebody, but sometimes I wonder if I'm just dooming myself, always going after the adventurous type.
But of course Helen doesn't it like that. She's always barking orders at him, always snapping at him, but there he is, following behind her no matter what. I think that, being the overachiever that she is, Helen looks down on him because he's not that successful. (Even if he is—he owns his own business, after all!) Helen's never really satisfied with what she has.
So here I go, on another date with another guy, which may well develop into several months of passion and excitement that end in screaming and heartache. And my sister will still be with her husband, living the same quiet life they've been living for the last twenty years.
How could I not be envious?
Oh, well. Maybe someday I'll find a Jake of my own.
