First Day
Everyone was sitting somewhere in the living room in front of the TV, everyone except Splinter. "Where's Hamato?" Callaby asked.
"Where he usually is at this time of day," Raph answered. "Meditating in his room."
"He's not going to want to hear the story?" Mikey asked sadly.
"Well he lived it," Donnie said, "He doesn't have to hear it again if he wants."
Cally shook her head and smiled. "You guys just really want to hear the story, don't you?"
"PLEASE?" They all yelled in unison.
April said, "Well, might as well because I can't stay for long. Dad wants me back home soon."
"Again?" Raph asked annoyed.
"Yeah, but I understand he's been….stressed."
"More like harassed." Callaby mumbled.
"What?"
"Nothing. So, where did we leave off?"
))))))))))))) 1997 (((((((((((((
I woke up the next day and at first I looked at it as glum and sad as I usually did this past week. Then I remembered. I got out of bed as quickly as I could and then got dressed. I put on clothing I really didn't mind getting dirty and then put on a bandana over my head to keep my hair back. I snuck out of my room as to not disturb my mother this early in the morning. Then I went into action.
First I grabbed my school back pack and emptied out its contents into a box. I put the box under my bed so that I can get back to it by the end of the summer. I took my backpack and grabbed an old blanket my mom never used and wouldn't notice if it were gone. I put it in the back pack along with a flash light. I went into the kitchen and pulled out a plastic bag. I opened the fridge and grabbed some fruit. I also put in apple sauce that my mom used to back sweets with. I grabbed a spoon and put it all together with the other stuff in the plastic bag. Then I put the plastic bag in the backpack, zipped it up and then slung it on my back. I went over to get my skateboard but then didn't because I remembered my punishment lengthen by another week. I smiled, knowing I'll be getting it back tomorrow.
I took a short cut through different streets until I got to the familiar manhole cover where Hamato and I went through last night. I sat in that alley next to a wall and waited until Hamato would appear. I felt like I should have gone in to look for him myself, but I knew the moment I got in there I would get lost.
The manhole cover suddenly lifted up a little and I saw a pair of amber eyes pear out into the street. I smiled, "Hamato."
"Make sure no one sees you." He said. Then he went back down under. I stood and then laid up against the wall. When I saw no one was coming through here or passing by the entrance, I quickly ran over to the lid and opened it up and then climbed in. I closed the lid over me and went down the ladder until I felt solid ground.
"I did not think you would come back." Hamato said.
"Mr. Hamato, how could I not come back?" I slid my back pack off and opened it.
"I thought it would be too much of a burden for you."
"It's not a burden Mr. Hamato." I pulled out my flashlight and then put my backpack on again. I turned on my flashlight and accidently shined it in Hamato's face. He grunted and hid his face at the sudden flash and I went, "Oops. Sorry." And I pointed the light in another direction.
"That is fine, I just have gotten used to this darkness."
"Really?" It was more of a sad statement then a question. He had to live like a rat in the sewers because daylight could expose him to the crowd. Ok, yeah, he was a rat. But I felt bad.
Using my flashlight we used it to find our way to the tunnel where the turtles were left. When I got there, I heard a squeal of joy and crawling out of the darkness of the tunnel came the freckle faced one. He went up to my feet and began playing with my shoe laces again. I leaned down and said, "Hello you cutie."
I sat down and let the little turtle pick at my shoe while I pulled off my backpack and took out the food I had. I grabbed a fresh peach and lifted it up to Hamato, "Here, for you." At first he was stunned but then her got himself together again and grabbed it from my hand.
He said, "Thank you Callaby," and then he took a bite.
I smiled then took out a mall pack of apple sauce and opened it. I took out the spoon and scooped up a bit of sauce. "Hey, little turtle." I made cooing noises to get the little Freckle face's attention. He looked at me with those light blue eyes glistening with curiosity. I then heard him smell the air and then look at the food in my hands. I heard a tiny rumble come from his stomach and I laughed at his reaction. "You're hungry, I know. Come here." I coaxed him over and he climbed on to my lap to look at the sauce in the spoon. "Ok, now open your mouth, like this." I opened my mouth wide to show him what to do. The first try he actually reached his hand into my mouth. I pulled it out and spit out the taste of sewer. "Plagh! Ok, you don't do that…..and you need a bath." I opened my mouth again and this time I poke him in the mouth, showing him he had to do the same. This time he did and then I put the spoon in his mouth.
First he scrunched up his face in surprise, then he smiled and gave out a yell, begging for me. "Ok, Ok." I fed him some more apples sauce until the little pack was empty. He wanted more though. "I'm sorry little turtle." I said taking him off my lap and putting him back on the ground. "But I have to feed your brothers.
The others were different. I went to the green eyed one and he refused at first. In fact, he ran away. Even when Hamato held him for me he wouldn't open his mouth. Then I pretended to find something interesting and I pointed to a random direction. "Oh! Look!" He looked in the direction and his mouth opened a little. I popped the food in his mouth quickly as I could. As he tasted the flavor, Hamato said, "That was very smart."
"I didn't think it would work. But babies can be fooled easily."
The dark colored little turtle's eyes widened in surprise and he asked for more. After I feed him I went to the dark blue eyed turtle. I did the same the freckle faced one, trying to get him to open his mouth. But he didn't make a face or even show interest in it. He looked at his other brother, the tall one, looking at the strapped of my back pack that I left by the wall of the tunnel. I looked back at the smaller turtle and notice him look at his brother in worry. "You want me to feed him first?" He just looked back at me.
I smiled, knowing he wanted his brothers to eat first before him. After I fed the tallest turtle he got interested in the spoon in my hand. I let him hold it a little while and he attempted to scoop at the ground, but was cement so he didn't pick anything up. I grabbed the spoon from him and then cleaned it as I went to the dark blue eyed turtle. This time he opened his mouth. "Well, look at you, waiting until everyone had their turn."
"A true brother." Hamato said. He went up to the turtle I was feeding. While the little guy ate, Hamato kneeled down and stroked him on the head. The turtle looked at Hamato with a smile. Once I was done feeding them I pulled out the blanket from my backpack. "Here, you can use this to cover yourself at night when the sewers get cold. Or the turtles can use it, especially now with the look of that couch cushion." Both Hamato and I looked at the dirty and ripped up couch pillow.
"It's hard to drag it along and not have to lose pieces from it."
"Why do you drag it? Where do you go?"
"Where ever I must. I cannot stay in one place. Who knows if someone might be following us."
"No one has come looking for anything down here if that's what you're asking. Everyone believes all evidence is at the surface. Hey, that sounds like a cool name."
"What is a good name?"
"For the speaking about the top where all the people are. The surface. I like to make up new lingo."
"Lingo?"
"It's sort of short for pop culture language. Like the guy who invented wig out."
"What is wig out?"
"Wig out. Like say if you see a person freaking out, they're wigging out. Some people at school twisted the idea and wigging out means people who are going nuts. Nuts as in BLaGhBlarghBlagh!" I explained the last part by sticking out my tongue, making a weird face, and then waving my hands around. The freckle face turtle saw this and did the same. He was followed by the blue eyed and the green eyed turtle. The tallest waved the spoon around and di exactly as I did. Hamato and I just stared at how funny they all looked. I began to laugh and then I continued to make faces with them. Hamato stood there confused but with a smile. He rolled his eyes and picked up the blanket, rolling it up.
When the turtles and I stopped wigging out, Hamato came up to me and said, "If you are done…"
"Sorry." I grabbed the blanket. "So are we still moving?"
"Yes." He said. Feeling bad that I didn't make my point, I turned around went to my backpack and picked it up. But he added, "But I believe you about the fact that no one is looking for me down here. I just want to make sure."
"Oh, ok." I smiled. Together, Hamato and I came up with a way to transport the turtles. We would hold each one end of the cushion as the turtles sat on it for a ride. As we got the last turtle on it, I noticed a glass canister in the back of the tunnel. "Hey? What is that?"
Hamato looked up at me and then behind him to where I was pointing. He went over to it and picked it up. "I almost forgot about it."
"Is that the canister that had all the ooze in it?"
"Yes." He handed it to me so I could take a look. There was a huge crack in the glass where it must have opened on impact. I then looked up at Hamato who seemed to be in deep thought as he looked at it. I asked, "Did it hurt?"
"What hurt?"
"When you….you know….changed?"
He didn't answer right away, but I noticed his body tense and in some parts of his fur, twitch. He gripped his hand into a fist. Then in the next second he stood tall and firm, and relaxed he looked down at me and said, "Only a little."
"But with all that different bone formation and your skin…..maybe I shouldn't press."
"No, no, it's all right. You want to know, it is fine. It's true it was a little more painful then I said before. But I have been through…..much worse." He grabbed the canister from my hand and then went over to the cushion. "Are you ready?"
We each grabbed one side and carried the cushion with the turtles on it out of the tunnel. "So where do you want to go?"
"Maybe after today we can settle down finally." He then looked at me. "How about near Great Livings. It would be easier and safer for you to come around, and I know I'll be near a familiar place. You said it yourself no one would come looking for me down here."
I smiled, "Oh-ok sure."
A.N: Cally taking care of business like a pro. Yes, i did another Iron Giant reference. Also, I think baby's eating is the most entertaining thing ever. I'm KikaKatTIOI, peace out!
