Chapter 36: L POV
To say that L feared those silver blades was an understatement. They were stained with the blood of vampires throughout the ages and L swore he could hear the screams of those killed even then. Though that was most likely due to the blades tasting vampire flesh for the first time in years. Though the fight was chaotic, it didn't truly turn life threatening until Beyond entered the fray. Red eyes gleamed behind ebony dyed locks, a maniacal grin stretched over his pale face even as he grabbed a hunter and sunk his fangs into the struggling hunter's neck. Cries of outrage could be heard as the other hunters witnessed the attack and a lull in the attacking vampires gave the hunters a clear view of the field.
Bodies of fallen hunters and the smoking remains of vampires lay where they had fallen in heaps, vampires and hunters still standing were scattered throughout the room. Eyes were focussed on Beyond as he carelessly dropped the body to the dust floor, blood smeared unnecessarily over his clothing and skin.
"Lawliet, it's been a while. A few months at least. So glad you could join the feast." Cackling Beyond took a few threatening steps forwards, the hunters shifting their stances even as the fledgling vampires took the time to flee the site. "Tch, useless bottom feeders. They should know better." Beyond gave a careless shrug even as another hunter appeared, dragging a struggling vampire by the hair and holding a silver stake threateningly over the vampire's neck.
'Light,' L felt his heart freeze as his eyes zeroed in on his struggling lover even as the other hunters attention split between Beyond and the new threat. As though he could hear L's inner cry of alarm, red eyes lifted and gazed at him in resignation. Gasps and low mutters of disgust tinted with traces of fear were emitted from the hunters even as the Yagami family stood stock still in either disgust or horror. 'No doubt they had been harbouring the wish to never see their son again.'
"I thought you should be the ones to end this parasites miserable life." The hunter holding Light captive smirked, yanking the teen vampire to his feet uncaring as the stake cut a bloody, blistering trail where the stake caught causing Light to let out a whimper of pain.
A low growl escaped from L even as Beyond acted in a flurry of activity. Vanishing and appearing behind the hunters with a bark of gloating laughter. "You mean to say you're truly unaware as to just whom your son has been with these last few months? It's been almost a year now and not a single one of you has realised that L Lawliet has been stringing you all along since the beginning." Red eyes locked with those of the gathered, anticipation rolling off of him in waves. "Your family has been a thorn in my side for centuries, killing every fledgling I created without a care in the world. It wasn't until after I finished dispensing with the remains of the last hunter to come close to Hunter status, that I realised how effective it would be having a Hunter on my side. So I hunted down your little family and began ensuring that your precious Light would gain Hunter status faster than any other Hunter to have ever existed. It was quite simple really, my ability is to alter people's memories, and therefore I was able to send fledglings and even princes and old ones to their deaths. The cabin? That was me. The hospital? Me. The nightclub? Me. I'm sure at some point Light had to have realised that an outside force was pulling the strings, but why would a vampire want to create a Hunter? Insurance, my bloodline will live on because Light is the strongest being to ever come into existence since the creation of the hunters and vampires." Beyond broke off into a series of loud deranged cackles even as the hunter's faces fell into dark glares of hatred. "And the best part is that your son has been screwing one of the original vampire princes!"
Hyper aware of the silver stakes that had been turned upon him, L kept his attention on his enemies; Beyond and the hunters, and the one he needed to save; Light. It was in this moment of stunned disbelief on the hunters part that Beyond acted again, striking out against the vampire holding Light captive by breaking his arm forcing the silver stake to drop to the floor in a muffled clutter even as screamed curses spewed from his lips. Reacting as though given an invisible command the three princes made blurred lunges for the fallen weapon, each of them with various plans for its use but ultimately ending in the same result; one of them would die that night. Yells came from the hunters as they clued in to what was happening and rough hands grabbed for the vampires and the stake they were aiming for. Limbs tangled and teeth snapped at exposed skin, all L could think of was getting that stake and ending Beyond's immortal life so he could spirit Light out of the building, and the country if L could accomplish it.
Emitting a soft curse as a silver stake brushed against his arm and forehead as two hunters attempted to stake Beyond who was still laughing as his killed hunters that came to close, his hand closed down upon the blade with the instantaneous reaction of burning flesh upon contact. Pain rolled in waves from his hand even as skin peeled and bubbled, exposing the raw muscle and skin underneath. Despite that L gritted his teeth and escaped from the tangle of limbs and scouted for Beyond. Light was holding off three hunters, and though he wanted desperately to help him, Beyond was still the biggest threat. So absorbed by the task, his didn't sense the hunter coming up behind him until a well-aimed kick forced his hand to release the stake and a cry of pain to be emitted as fire burned from the damaged hand. Moving out of the path of the follow up attack L lost sight of the stake until three yells of disbelief filled the room as the three hunters attacking Light, found themselves frozen in place. The unexpected form of attack halted the hunters for a few seconds before they threw themselves back into the fray. Those few seconds were enough for Light to swoop in and grab the discarded stake, and with the same fluid motion of years of practise and vampiric skills added in, plunged the stake into Beyond's heart.
