Shadow

Three months later found Kyouran pacing back and forth outside of the Hokage's office. Sakura was talking to Naruto privately about a cover mission for her to go on to try and hide her pregnancy. Baggy clothes would only go so far four months into the pregnancy. Naruto was making sure that this was what Sakura wanted without her influence.

"Easy fox," she heard from behind her.

She looked over at Sai in annoyance. For all the people in the world to get saddled with to go with her and Sakura it had to be this guy.

"Whether Naruto likes it or not he knows I'm right."

"She's…"

Before he could finish his thought the door opened. The two looked sullen and resolute.

"Come in," Naruto said softly.

They followed him into the room. Kakashi was sitting in the corner. He seemed deep in thought for a moment before she brushed her chakra against his to get his attention. He looked at her with a type of sadness that stuck a nerve inside of her. She sent her reassurance through their bond. Once they were in Naruto sealed the room again.

"While I don't like this idea, it's probably for the best that Sakura hides her pregnancy. I have decided that Kyouran and Sai will go with you to protect you wherever Kyouran deems safe."

The fox gave a curt nod. She already had a place in mind and they would stay with someone trust worthy and strong enough to protect Sakura if they weren't able to. His sharp gaze turned to the fox demon. "I don't like her being away from the village but I'm not naïve enough to believe it's completely safe here while she carries Sasuke's child."

Sakura sighed softly glad that her brother understood the gravity of the entire situation. She didn't like it anymore than Naurto did but this threat to her child was all around.

"Where will you go?" Kakashi asked his mate.

Kyouran looked at him pointedly.

"You know I can't tell you that. For the safety of Sakura and the baby I can't afford any fuck ups."

"It'll be okay guys," Sakura said softly. "We'll be back before you know it and you guys will have a baby to spoil rotten."

There were small smiles on Naruto and Kakashi's faces. Kyouran turned her gaze to Sai.

"Go home and pack and talk to your wife Sai."

He gave a curt nod and vanished. Kyouran looked towards her mate. He didn't need to say anything out loud but his eyes told her to be careful. Her only answer was a curt nod. Before looked at Sakura she looked towards Naruto. He was still new to being Hokage and the difficulties of sending his teammates and friends on missions that might not go well. That some would never return. There was a foreboding in the air even the Kyuubi could feel.

"Let's go kit."

Sakura nodded her head and threw a small smile to her team. Before they vanished in a cloud of pink petals and black leaves. They landed in Sakura's apartment. Like the predator that she was Kyouran stalked the rooms checking everything out. She froze in Sakura's doorway to her room.

"Sakura how long ago was Sasuke here?"

The pink haired nin dropped what she'd been holding. Her hands were shaking.

"A couple days ago. He said he'd heard rumors that I was pregnant and he came to check. He freaked out on me Kyouran," Sakura whimpered. "He wouldn't even let me tell him that this child was his."

Tears were sliding down her cheeks. She hiccupped softly. "He gave me one of those looks he gave me when he was with Orochimaru."

"He's just…"

Kyouran's nose went into overdrive. He'd tried to hide the undercurrent of the main scent but it was there plain as day. A curse escaped her lips.

"Sakura pack faster."

"What?"

Her tears stopped at the command in the fox's voice.

"It wasn't Sasuke."

"Then who…"

"The enemy who would take your baby."

Sakura started packing faster. Kakashi appeared at the window. A soft growl escaped Kyouran till she felt his brush of chakra against hers. A sigh of relief escaped her. No one could duplicate the way his chakra felt against hers.

"Kyouran what the hell is going on your chakra is going ape shit?"

"He was here and knows Sakura's pregnant."

A curse escaped his lips. "Go get Sai ready. We have to leave sooner than expected."

Kakashi gave a curt nod before vanishing in a poof of smoke. "Hurry Sakura. The sooner we leave the sooner we get to our hiding place."

The last thing Sakura gathered up was her weapons pouch and the gifts Sasuke gave her. They vanished from the house to arrive at the gates. Sai was standing with Sumi talking softly to her. Sakura felt guilty for dragging him from his pregnant wife. Kakashi landed beside the two women holding a bag for his mate.

"Can't we take someone else? He shouldn't have to be away from her while she's pregnant."

"He okayed this mission Sakura. He knows what he's getting into and so does Sumi. It's the life we signed up for when we became Ninja. There are times we have to go where we are needed whether we like it or not."

"That doesn't make it right," she whispered.

"Sakura…" Kyouran started.

"It's alright Sakura," Sai Said. "You need help and since the Hokage can't leave the village it's better that I go."

Sakura felt tears sting her eyes again. Even after their rough beginnings he was still willing to protect her and her child from some unknown powerful danger that was out there.

"Thank you Sai."

A curt nod and one of those creepy smiles was his only response. Kyouran shifted to her fox form. Kakashi handed the bag to Sakura. Kakashi turned to Kyouran and cupped her cheeks and kissed the tip of her nose.

"Stay safe mate."

She licked his neck. Sakura hauled herself up onto the fox's back. Sai got up behind her.

"We're going to shadow jump half way and then we'll run the rest. If I do what I do to the Kage of where we're going like I do to the Hokage I'd lose my head."

"We're going to another village?"

Kyouran nodded her head as she looked forward. Sumi moved to stand beside Kakashi.

"Hang on kits we're going."

She took off in a run and the nearest shadow under a tree she leapt into. The forest they came out into was vastly different than the one they were just in. The trees seemed more tropical. Sakura looked around her in confusion.

"I've been here before haven't I?" she asked the fox demon.

"I'm surprised you remember that after all these years Sakura but yes you have been here before."

"Haku and Zabuza… We're near the Naruto Bridge leading into Mist. We're going to Mist?"

"I've got good standing with the Mizukage."

"Mei?"

"Nope, she stepped down about two years ago and the new Kage hasn't stepped into the limelight yet."

"How is it possible that they haven't…"

"He has his ways."

"Do I know him?"

"I'm not sure if you've met him face to face before, but you do know his wife."

Sakura looked at the fox in confusion. "Don't think so hard on it Sakura. You'll see when we arrive in Mist. They're expecting us."

"But you didn't want people to know where we were."

"I'd have to have permission to reside in the Hidden Mist from the Mizukage."

Sakura slid off of Kyouran's back. She slipped her glamour over form to change her eyes to a brown color and her hair shortened and her ears became human like. Sakura and Sai changed their looks as well. The trio walked towards the Hidden Mist. It took hours before they arrived at the front gates. The Nin at the check in station demanded their papers and Kyouran handed them over to him. All the nin nearby looked at the strangers warily. Kyouran actually hated bringing Sakura here but there wasn't much choice. Madara would check in the normal places for them like Wind and Fire and the demon villages were out of the question. The ninja wrote something on the papers that Kyouran presented and waved them on. Once she was sure that they weren't being watched.

"Whatever you do don't do anything to draw attention to yourselves."

They nodded their head as they headed towards the building where the Mizukage resided. They were greeted by silent ANBU. Kyouran flashed the papers.

"We're here to see the Mizukage. He's expecting us."

The bigger of the two ANBU nodded and led them up the stairs. They arrived at a big door and waited for their granted entrance. A gruff 'Come In' was their only answer. The ANBU opened the door and ushered them in and walked in behind them. He closed the door with a resounding thud. Sakura clung to Sai worriedly.

"You should send your ANBU away before I smash his face in for scaring a pregnant woman."

A hearty laugh escaped the chair that was facing away from them.

"It's okay they're here to see me."

The ANBU nodded and left the room. The chair turned around and Sakura almost collapsed if it hadn't been for Sai holding onto her. Before her sat a man that was supposed to be dead.

"It's been a long time Fox."

"You're the Mizukage?" Sakura asked in disbelief.

Kisame smirked at her and tilted his head to the side. Then his attention went back to the fox demon.

"You shouldn't threaten my ANBU Kyouran."

"Everyone right now is a threat to Sakura."

The ex-Akatsuki member looked closer at the girl standing beside the other nin. Before he could say anything his wife walked in with their two year old twins at her side. Her baby-bump showing considerably. The twins rushed their father making him laugh heartily as he scooped them up in his arms.

"Oh sorry I didn't know you were in a meeting."

"Kiri?" Sakura asked in disbelief.

"Sakura?" Kiri said happily and waddled towards the med nin.

The two women embraced happily. Then Sakura passed out suddenly. Sai darted forward and managed to catch both women.

"Kyouran what the…" he halted his language considering the twins were there.

"She's not being doing well. She knows she's being hunted for the baby she carries."

"Kiri take them to the house and I'll get a briefing from Kyouran so I know what's going on."

He saw that she wanted to argue, but she paused knowing he'd tell her everything later. Sai picked up Sakura. Kiri walked the twins out the way they came. Kisame waited for them to leave the hearing range before he looked pointedly at the shadow fox.

"Kyouran explain to me carefully what the hell just happened."

Kyouran sighed softly as she moved forward and sat in the chair across from him. She ran her fingers through her hair. Taking a deep breath she readied herself to tell him what he needed to know.

"She's carrying an Uchiha."

"What?"

"It's Sasuke's son."

"Okay that doesn't exactly…"

"She's being hunted by Uchiha Madara."

The shark nin seemed to slip into thought. Shaking his head he looked at the woman before him.

"I thought Itachi got rid of him."

"Itachi wasn't strong enough in the end and truthfully Sasuke isn't either."

"Are they both dead?"

"Sasuke's still alive as far as I know. But I buried Itachi and Koori in a private cemetery on my property."

Kisame flinched at the news. He would miss the quieter nins company. Koori wasn't so bad herself either.

"The baby?"

"She's safe."

"It figures it'd be a girl," he said with a shark like grin.

Kisame folded his arms across his chest and leaned back into his chair. "So what have you brought me?"

"Sakura needs to hide until the baby comes."

"Are you staying with her?"

"Yes. We have five more months before the baby comes or so. Sasuke doesn't know and only five people in the Leaf know she's pregnant with Sasuke's baby."

"Express your concerns to me Kyouran so I know how I can help."

"Madara is my main concern. He can become a convincing Sasuke so don't trust anyone looking like him to be him unless I can get to him first."

"Got it. It's that Uchiha smell isn't it that makes you pause doesn't it."

Kyouran nodded her head. She shifted and started pacing around the room like a caged animal.

"I wanted her to have the baby among family in the Leaf until I realized Madara knew Sakura was carrying an Uchiha. He'll stop at nothing to get his hands on another one of his line once the body he has fails."

"How did he figure it out?"

"Sasuke gave Sakura the traditional wedding gifts Uchiha give to their ninja brides."

"That was dumb of him considering his status."

"So says the former nuke-nin who married his wife who was still tied to her village."

Kisame only shrugged his shoulders. He took a deep breath and leaned forward to look at the pacing fox.

"Who's the ghost?"

"That's Sai he replaced Sasuke on Kakashi's team after the incident in Wind with Gaara. If you don't want us here Kisame we can go elsewhere."

"That's not it. I'm trying to figure out how to do this."

"I want to hunt Madara once and for all but not while Sakura is this vulnerable. She's not sleeping or eating well. Then she's worried Sasuke wont want her or the baby once everything is all said and done."

"He gave her Uchiha Wedding gifts."

"She probably doesn't know what they are."

"Then tell her."

Kyouran nodded her head. Kisame got up and put a hand on her shoulder.

"I heard about your kit, and I'm sorry for your loss."

"She wasn't ready to come into the world."

He needed to change the subject.

"Are you planning on hunting Madara while she's here?"

"I'm more than ready to hunt this bastard that has been dogging my steps and now the steps of my mates students."

"You too? Wait on second thought I understand that one, but not at the same time."

"Madara doesn't understand how my kind work for the most part. He would've never had me because I bonded to Kakashi early in life."

Kisame nodded his head. He understood because his own mate was like that. "No amount of coaxing was going to sway me even after Kakashi hurt me."

"Should I post ANBU."

"No ANBU. It's bad enough I had to make them leave their family in the Leaf because of this. I don't want to make them feel like prisoners."

He nodded his head in understanding.

"I have a few trusted Nin that could help you watch them if you want to go hunting. They watch Kiri as well because she didn't want to be watched by ANBU either."

"Whomever you trust to watch them I will abide by your judgment. However, on that note if Sakura feels uncomfortable I will make that nins life a living hell."

"Dually noted Kyouran. Why don't you go rest you don't look so good."

She nodded her head and bowed respectfully to Kisame. He gave her his trademark grin before turning to the work on his desk.

Kyouran changed back and stalked out of the tower. She followed Kiri's unique scent towards the residence of the Mizukage. Sakura was sitting in the back yard with Kiri playing with the twins. Sai was standing off to the side like a silent sentry. Sighing softly she moved from the shadows.

"Sakura we need to talk."

The pink haired nin just nodded her head and smiled softly at Kiri.

"When you're done I'll show you all to your rooms."

"We wont be long Kiri."

Kyouran led Sakura away from the small group to a secluded part of the compound. She sat Sakura down and pulled her weapons pouch out.

"Kyouran?"

She fished out the black bag with the Uchiha symbol on it. Sakura went to reach for it but Kyouran jerked it out of her grasp.

"I'm going to tell you something Sakura."

Sakura sat there quietly confusion in her eyes. "As you well know I was an ally to Uchiha Itachi."

She nodded her head knowing that much. Kyouran dumped the necklace and shuriken into her hands and looked at them with a soft smile.

"Did you know there is a twin to this necklace and shuriken?"

"No."

Kyouran moved to place the necklace around Sakura's neck. Moving around to face her she nodded her head.

"Itachi told me it's a tradition in his clan that there is a matching set of shuriken and necklaces. Each Uchiha family things are different. There is a ring too but I'm not sure where that is."

"Oh?"

"They're gifts a male Uchiha gives to the woman he wants to marry. Itachi gave a similar pair to Koori I'd imagine."

Sakura's eyes went wide when realization dawned on her what Sasuke meant by giving these to her.

"But…"

"Sakura in Sasuke's own stunted way he wants to marry you and it's not because you're pregnant. He doesn't know that little fact."

"How can you be sure?"

Kyouran smiled softly and sat down beside her and took in her scent.

"Because you've always had the undercurrent of his scent in your own from the first moment you came into the world. He also has a scent marker for you in his scent that he's also had his entire life."

"You know that sounds weird coming from you."

"You should be used to it. I've always tried to guide people to their other halves."

Sakura smiled softly as her hand ran over her baby bump. "This child will be the pride of their father and mother and…"

Before she could say anything else something seemed off.

"Kyouran?"

She waved at Sakura for quite. Sakura hid the Uchiha items quickly knowing someone could report that to the one hunting them. Kyouran shifted and her hackles were raised as she stood protectively in front of Sakura. Her eyes started sharding with crimson. In a flash Sai was standing guard protectively in front of Sakura. The two ninja moved forward and went to kneel before the trio. They bore insignias of the Mist village. There was one male and one female. They must've been twins because they looked alike.

"Lady Kyouran, Lord Kisame sent us to assist you in the protection of Lady Sakura."

Kyouran watched the duo warily. Her teeth were bared. She snapped at them showing if they were a threat they wouldn't be standing much longer.

"Kyouran it's okay. This is Kaito and Manami," Kiri said as she waddled toward them.

They bowed their heads respectfully to their Kage's wife.

"I trust no one right now Kiri except you and Kisame in this village."

"We understand Lady…"

"I'm not a Lady anything," Kyouran snapped.

These humans wouldn't ever understand what she was in the demon realm.

"Kyouran please," Kiri said softly. "If you can't trust them, trust me. I owe you so much for what you did for Kisame and I. Let me repay you for your help by letting these two protect Sakura."

"Sai will be with Sakura at all times when I cannot be."

"We understand that Lady Hatake."

Before anyone could blink she had Kaito down underneath her body. Her fangs bared at him and her claws were dangerously close to tearing out his throat.

"Let's get one thing straight right here, right now. I'm not a lady anything. Kakashi and I aren't married as you humans know it."

Kiri groaned in annoyance.

"You two leave her alone. It wouldn't do well to goad her into a fight right now. Anyone that makes themselves a threat will be dealt with swiftly. Let him up Kyouran."

She snort and kicked him hard between the legs making him gasp and groan in pain.

"Let that be a lesson brat. Do not antagonize me again."

Manami helped her brother up and started scolding him in a tongue that no one understood. Kyouran whipped her head in the girls direction. Then realization dawned on Kyouran. They were half-breeds. They hid it well.

"I apologize Kyouran," Kaito murmured softly. "It won't happen again. We are at your service to protect your charges."

She gave a curt nod and turned to Sakura. Kiri motioned for them to follow her. They went into the mansion and Kiri gave them their rooms.

"Kyouran all three rooms are adjoining. Sakura's room is in the middle."

She nodded her head and paced the rooms checking everything out. Kiri left them alone. Sakura sat on the bed in somewhat of a daze.

"Sakura?"

She moved forward and sat beside her.

"So much is happening so fast."

Her hand ran over her baby bump.

"Sakura no matter what happens we'll protect you and the baby."

She looked at the fox.

"It's a boy," she said softly.

"I know. I can smell the difference."

"I wish I could tell Sasuke. He'd be so happy."

"Lay down kit for awhile. I know you're tired."

She nodded and yawned as she laid down over the covers. Kyouran leapt up on the bed and laid down beside her and watched over the sleeping woman. Sai made an appearance at the door and Kyouran gave him a curt nod. He returned it and went back to his own room to rest. They would need it for the days ahead.
