It's 20 below (I'm not kidding, burrr) and so I have nothing to do but write!
Hans found her curled up in her room, sitting on her bed and staring out into space. She forgotten to close her door, or just didn't care. He stopped in the doorway, knocking to get her attention. She kept staring blankly, not acknowledging his presence. He sighed and entered anyway.
The Captain walked to her bedside and knelt in front of her. Enola glanced at him from the corner of her eye, frowned, then turned away. He reached out to her shoulder, only to have her flinch away. Examining her expression for a minute, he huffed and stood up, turning to leave.
A hand caught his. Hans glanced down to see her hand clinging to him. She still wasn't looking at him, but also not letting him go either. Cautiously, he sat down beside her, trying to get a good look at her face.
They stayed like that for a few moments before Enola looked up at him. Several tears had made their way down her face. Hans reached out, wiping them from her cheeks. He didn't want to see her cry. Doubtlessly she had cried all too much over the last half-century, she didn't need to cry more, and he certainly didn't want to be the cause of it.
Enola stared up at him, then lurched forward, hugging his midsection. Her delicate form was shaking. He patted her head, wishing he had words to soothe her with. All he could do was hold her close, giving her all the comfort he had to offer.
He didn't want her to have to deal with this type of stuff. That was why he had made her stay with Rip and Zorin before, then the Doctor. This wasn't her problem; this was his problem. He was supposed to shelter and protect her from this. The world was cruel, he had accepted that long ago. But Enola shouldn't need to suffer it. He wouldn't let her suffer.
There was something in her eyes, something so innocent, even after all she'd been through. Sure, she could be a vicious little wolf when she wanted to be, but she wasn't out to hurt people. Enola was doing what she thought she had to do, and her morals still held strong. Morals were something he had abandoned long ago.
Yet, she idolized him, and he knew it. He wanted to be her super hero, the big brother he was supposed to be all along. But he had let her down. What was she going to do now that she found her savior was a sinner, serving a cause simply because he had nowhere else to go?
"Enola?" Rip's voice came from the doorway. Hans looked up to the vampiress, who walked over to the siblings, concern written on her features. "Vhat happened? Does it have to do vith zat Iscariot-?"
The Captain nodded.
"Oh, Enola!" the girl said sympathetically "Surly you know vhy he had be done avay vith?"
The female werewolf looked up, shaking her head slowly and staring at Rip in confusion.
"He knew you vere here!" the vampiress told her, "Ve had to, for your protection!"
Hans glanced at Rip. That was a lie, but…Enola bought it. She was relaxing finally. She stared up at him with big, admiring eyes. He was her hero again, the one who had saved her from the big bad Vatican. Rip was also looking pointedly at him, daring him to contradict her and upset his sister again. He couldn't do that. It was his job to make her happy, even if that meant hiding the truth from her.
Biting the inside of his lip, the Captain nodded, confirming Rip's claims. Enola smiled and hugged him, murmuring her thanks and apologizing for being mad at him. A stab of guilt ripped though the werewolf, but it was better then having her crying. At least she was blissfully ignorant. Hopefully she stayed that way.
The rest of the world could go to Hell for all he cared, he was perfectly willing to help it along. But not Enola, not his little sister.
Even the Captain had to crack a smile at the sight of Schrodinger and Enola dancing in the middle of the war room. The Major clapped out the rhythm as werewolf and cat-boy skipped in a circle holding hands, laughing as they did. Rip was singing along with the lyrics and Zorin was humming the tune.
Enola separated from Schrodinger, leaping over to Rip to sing the chorus with her, simply leaving out the words she did not remember. It was rather impressive how much she remembered, considering she had only heard it twice previously and the song was in German. She then linked arms with Schrodinger again and swung around, giggling and tripping over each other as they did so.
Hans smiled. His sister was happy. She might have had some hard times in the past, and he might not be able to keep her from getting hurt in the future, but for now, she was having fun. She didn't need to know the cost of this moment of joy, that wasn't for her to worry about. Enola was well worth it.
Her eyes glistened with pure delight at having people around who cared about her. It was a bit of a naive fantasy, but one the Captain was willing to let her have. After all, no one really cared about werewolves except their own pack, a fact he had learned about 25 years too late. Still, Enola had turned out to be beautiful, strong willed when she wanted to be, dedicated to those she found deserving, and innocent to the cruel tricks of the world. In his eyes she was perfect, an undefiled angel, and he wanted to keep her that way.
Yet another group of new members were being introduced. Three of them were soldiers. The other three were staff members, kitchen boys by the looks of them. Anyhow, all six of them were male, and had their eyes on the very attractive and busty blond in front of them. Seras glanced up to Pip, who was explaining the layout of the barracks and manor.
"-and I don't recommend going into the basement for any reason unless directly ordered to," Pip was saying, "That is were the special forces are located."
"Special forces?" one of the soldier asked, eyes never leaving Sera's breast, "What kind of special forces."
"Supernatural special forces," the draculina explained, preparing to drop the bombshell, "The makeup Hellsing's field agents consists of two vampires and a werewolf."
"Currently only two vampires, Mignonette," Pip corrected quietly.
"And a werewolf," Seras insisted, "She's just MIA for a bit. She'll be back, I know she will be."
"But she's not MIA, Seras," the captain of the Wild Geese said, "Remember, Peter and the boys found 'er. She's not on our side anymore."
Seras rounded on him, glaring, "Mr. Bernadotte, Enola Wolf is coming back to Hellsing, and nothing you say can convince me otherwise. I know she is."
So, Hans basically lied to Enola, or is letting her believe a lie anyhow. He's got the best of intentions and regrets letting her be given to Iscariot, but how is this going to backfire? Even he knows it can't last forever, though he'll certainly try and make it!
What do you think? Review! Thanks!
