CH 36- Little Days
.
Before Lana could see the vein on Jude's forehead pop and the world around them explode, she put her hands up, "Just for a weekend."
When Jude heard her words, she paused and took a moment. A look of confusion crossed her face and Lana could tell she was trying to calm herself from a moment that would have been sheer panic. Lana studied Jude for a moment longer until she cleared her throat and stepped forward.
"I'd like it very much if you'd let me take Lux to New York for just a single weekend." She explained calmly and rationally, of course. She wanted Jude to see that her wish was an innocent one.
"Out of the question." Jude answered, placing her hand on the counter to hold herself up.
Lana glowered at Jude's answer. Of course she had expected it to be a solid no but there was still a hope inside of her that expected Jude to say yes. Nevertheless, Lana kept her temper but she wasn't going to accept "no" for an answer. She had some time to convince Jude to let the girl leave to New York with her. If not that weekend than the following. Lana just wanted to spend time with Lux. Time alone without anyone else. If only for a couple of days.
"Jude, please." Lana spoke up, "Listen, it'll just be for the weekend, then she'll be home in time for school."
Jude remained silent as she passed by Lana on her way to the sink.
"Jude, I'm not asking for much."
"Yer askin' for a whole lot."
"A whole lot? A whole lot to spend two measly days with my child?"
Jude spun around to meet her, "Your child? I thought ya said ya weren't her mother, Ms. Lana Banana?"
Lana sighed. "I know. I'm sorry. I may not be her mother in that sense but I—I just meant that it be nice to get to know her. Just her and I." She waited for Jude to speak but when she didn't, she continued, "You've had all her life. Let me just have two days."
Jude's glance fell downcast on the kitchen floor, considering what Lana had told her. Just the mention of taking the girl away sent her in a panic and Jude knew it was ridiculous of her to feel that way but somehow part of her felt as if two days would turn into an eternity and she would never see her child again. Of course Lana wasn't capable of running away with the girl, or holding her in hiding while fighting for her custody. It all seemed like a ridiculous ploy and Jude knew she was just being foolish. All Lana wanted was a weekend to get acquainted with the girl and show her the city. It was all so simple and innocent. So then why couldn't she let go?
Jude took in a deep breath and exhaled. "I'll consider it."
Lana smiled. "Thank you."
.
A little later, Lana read to the children like she said she would. Lux was the first to plop down in front of her in the living room and listening intently. Julia listened as well and Thomas did too until something else found his interest. Lana read about two chapters until she put the book down and called it a night until the next time. Lux took the book from her for safekeeping and thanked her. She then too went off to join the two other children in front of the television set.
Lana glanced towards the kitchen where Jude sat with Kit. It looked like they had been discussing something extremely serious. Kit looked awfully annoyed and Jude looked just about done. Lana stood from the sofa and joined them in the kitchen.
Before she could speak, Jude glanced up at her. "Listen here, Ms. Lana Banana, I have made up my mind."
Lana frowned lightly, a bit confused at where Jude was getting at.
Jude gave out a heavy sigh. "Not this weekend but the next."
"What—"
"Lux can go with ya to New York."
.
Lana was awfully content when she said goodbye to Lux the following morning. "I'll see you soon, pretty girl." She told her as she knelt down in front of her and fixed the buttons on her dress shirt for school.
Lux had been told of the news and was awfully excited to go to New York but she had failed to understand that Jude wouldn't be going with her. That it would be just her and Lana so there was no hesitation and no fear on her part.
"Okay." She beamed and let Lana fix her shirt.
"You be good now, alright? Till I come back."
"I will. How long till then?"
"A week."
Jude watched from the bottom of the porch as Lana said her goodbyes to the child. The other two children already had and so had Kit before he headed to work earlier that morning. He said something about an emergency and headed out around six. Lana wanted to stay and walk the children home but her editor was pressing on time and the drive back would be a long one. Not to mention the fact that Lana missed her own home. She loved visiting Salem and her family but there was just something about being in her own home that nothing could replace. Also, she wanted to have everything ready for Lux.
Lana had some of it planned out. When she returned to New York, she'd sent out for her decorator to prepare one of the empty rooms nearest hers for the girl. She was going to fill it with a bed, a desk, books and all new things. And as for the closet, rows and rows of new outfits. Lana wanted to give her everything she hadn't. Of course she wanted Lux to pick out her own things so maybe she'd wait on some of the shopping.
Lana knew she was getting ahead of herself but she was excited to be the girl's mother for at least just a weekend.
"That's a long time." Lux said with a little pout.
"It'll fly by. You won't even notice it."
"Okay." Lux said and threw her arms around Lana's neck, "Ya be safe an' come back, kay?"
Lana hugged her back. "Okay." She smiled and kissed Lux's cheek and then stood.
"Be sure to let us know ya made it home safe." Jude said, walking up to the car with the other two children.
Lana hopped into her car and waved, "Will do."
"Bye, Lana!" All the kids waved her off when she pulled the car out of the driveway and drove it down the same road that lead her all the way to New York. Lux was the last one to put her hand down.
And she stood there wondering if the week would really go by as fast as Lana promised it would.
.
Through out the week, Jude watched her child with a somber silence. She had a lot to think about, especially with the fact that it would be the first time she'd be apart from Lux since she got her from the orphanage. Jude didn't even know why she had agreed to let Lux go to New York with Lana but in that moment, she had seen the desperation in Lana's eyes.
After all, Jude was a woman of God and she believed in forgiveness. She knew she had to do what was best, even if it was a little hard for her. It had to be done. Also, Lux needed to get to know Lana if she was going to be in her life. Jude just wished the fear of losing the little golden child wasn't so grand.
