Chap 37

Since the graduation of their two sons, it was safe to say the Hummel house was usually free of visitors. It's not as though they were unsociable, but after having Kurt and Finn have their very strange, rambunctious friends over just about every weekend for the past two years, Carol and Burt were taking a well deserved break from guests. So when the doorbell rang one Saturday afternoon, Burt was surprised to find his son's short, curly-haired boyfriend on his doorstep.

"Hey Mr. Hummel," Blaine said nervously, not meeting the older man's eyes.
"Nice to see you Blaine," Burt said earnestly, "I have to admit I didn't expect to see you around here. Is everything alright with Kurt?"

"Oh! Yes sir everything is great," Blaine said hurriedly, his eyes growing wide.

Burt chuckled, "Well then there's no need to call me sir, I'm not that old yet."

"Sorry," Blaine replied, flustered.

"It's no problem son," Burt said, smiling gently, "I assume you're here to talk about my son."

"Yeah," Blaine said, obviously mustering up all his courage, "I told you things were going great with Kurt, but that's not entirely true. Things are going better than great. When I look at him, I am happier than I ever thought possible. I love him and I will always put his needs before mine because if he is happy I know I can be happy. He is who I wake up for in the morning, and when I see him I see everything I want to be. I see a house, a family, a minivan, early mornings making him breakfast , burning it every other time because he's so much better at cooking than me, and long nights waiting for him to come home from Vogue. And none of it scares me, because he is the only person I could do any of that with"

Burt didn't speak for a while after Blaine finished. Of course he new this day would come, after all Kurt was bound to find a man to love him the way he deserved. He had imagined himself sitting down with the young man and having to give him a strict lecture on what marrying someone really meant, but looking at the boy, because he really was so young, he was sure Blaine would be willing to do anything for Kurt. Still it was a surreal moment hearing the sentiments he had voiced to his first father-in-law and then Carol years later, now being directed to him.

So when he finally spoke, he knew what the response would be "And you're going to ask him to marry you?"

"Yes," Blaine said. His voice was barely over a whisper, but his eyes were full of determination.

"Well I don't think I could stop you even if I wanted to," Burt clapped a hand to Blaine's shoulder, "You have my blessing."

Blaine beamed, "Thank you so much. I promise I will do everything I can to make him happy."

"I know you will," Burt smiled, "You're free to come in for a while. I think Carole's getting ready to make dinner if you want to join."

"I'd love to, but I've got to get home. I told Kurt I'd meet him for dinner. I might ask him tonight if I get the chance," Blaine said excitedly.

"Well good luck then son," Burt chuckled, "It was great seeing you, and keep in mind you're always free to visit."

With a wave, Blaine turned back to the driveway. He had to resist the urge to skip to his car. Everything was going even better than planned. As he slid into the driver's seat, Blaine was just pulling out his phone to call Wes when it started to ring. He frowned at the number flashing on the screen before answering it.

"Dad?"
