Side Story 11: A Hard Miracle
~Narrators POV~
"I can't believe you've come to our aid! Oh, gods be good! Thank you, sir!"
The shepherds had come across a town by the sea that was being terrorized and stopped to help.
Frederick shook his had at the Elder. "We heard rumors of girls being snatched by the Grimleal for use in sacrificial rites."
Elder nodded sadly. "All true, I fear... Our own village has lost three already. Please, you must see that no more are allowed to suffer this cruel fate!"
Chrom nodded seriously. "The Grimleal have stolen their last victim. I swear it."
"Do you know where the zealots gather?" Anna asked. She bit her lip, knowing the answer and praying the one they were about to meet was alright.
Elder nodded. "One of the girls escaped and made her way here. Perhaps she can tell you more. She's a gentle sort, but a bit... Um...' he hesitated. 'Well, I'll just bring her."
As he walked out of the room, Anna followed after. She stopped him and said bluntly. "It's Emmeryn. Isn't it?"
The Elder looked at her surprised but then sighed. "Yes, I know there'll be a bit of an uproar with this reveal but it's for the best."
They entered the room where she was and Anna looked upon her sadly. She was in a simple yellow dress, her royal robes and headpiece missing, she was looking out the window with a blank face. The Elder and Anna looked at each other before she stepped forward and knocked softly on the door. Emmeryn turned and her eyes widened at the sight of Anna.
"... I... know you, but I... don't."
Anna smiled sadly at the former Exalt. "What do you remember?" She came forward slowly and sat across from her.
Emmeryn blinked then said. "You were... crying... and... I... was falling...' she looked at Anna and took her hand, examining the engagement and wedding ring on her finger. 'I... gave you... my... blessing..."
Anna smiled and gently held her hands. "You did. I'm happy with Him. Even if you don't remember Him, I can tell you He is happy. The others will be surprised you're alive and might cause a ruckus, but we'll go slow and help you regain your memory."
Emmeryn gave a small smile and nodded. Anna slowly helped her stand before leading her towards the door. The Elder stood there in shock before leading them back to the Shepherds, Anna softly explaining things to Emm who nodded. Suddenly there was a gasp, they looked up to see all the Shepherds starting.
Robin was wide eyed and his voice was a whisper. "Emmeryn?!"
Lisa was crying and Chrom looked at her in silent shock before slowly walking forward to them. "E-Emmeryn?! Sister, is that you?!"
Emmeryn blinked at Chrom and muttered confused. "Sis...ter?"
Anna sighed. "It seems she survived the fall but hit her head quite hard. She has little memory of what happened. I was surprised when I followed the Elder and saw it was her. Strike that, I didn't think it would be possible, even knowing all I know!"
The Elder shook his head and placed a hand on Chrom's shoulder. "Please, sir. I fear you're upsetting the girl. She doesn't comprehend as you or I."
Chrom turned to him with a raised eyebrow. "Explain!" he said a little more harshly then he meant.
Elder sighed sadly. "I... I know little about the situation, sir. The girl doesn't hail from here. She's been like this ever since the night she arrived in our village. When she speaks, it's with the words of a small child. It pains my heart to imagine what horrors drove her to such a state..."
Emmeryn blinked. "I... Th-this..."
Lissa sniffled. "Ah, gods, Emmeryn..."
Chrom turned back to his sister, who was being held by his wife, with tears in his eyes. "Emm..."
Suddenly, one of the villagers came running up with a look of fear on his face. "Ill news, sir! The Grimleal make for the village! They're being led by that woman Belleth!"
"Not again! We can't allow any more innocent girls to be hurt! Nor can we let that woman hurt them!"
Anna looked at the Elder and asked, "What do you mean?"
The Elder looked at her. "Belleth attacks the girls out of Jealousy. From what we found out, she was deeply jealous of her elder sister, who was spoiled. She had everything, and since she cannot take her anger out on her, she takes it out on all the girls here. Especially if they have blonde hair."
Anna cringed before holding Emmeryn tighter. "Considering she's my sister and has been brainwashed by the Grimleal, I find that I have only myself to blame. I should have noticed her jealousy earlier and helped her through it." The Elders eyes widened.
Chrom looked at the two before ordering to the Shepherds. "Shepherds! Prepare for battle!" They all ran of as he watched as Anna led Emm away. Not long after the battle began, Chrom went to the safe house where two of the five most important women in his life were and got a nasty surprise.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY'RE NOT HERE?!"
Elder winced. "I-I'm sorry, sir! I looked away for but a moment and she'd disappeared! Perhaps she thought the zealots had come to take her back and wanted to spare us. As for your wife, I believe she went to confront Belleth alone."
Chrom sighed. "That certainly sounds like something she'd do. Both of them. Well, she can't have gotten far. Come on!"
Emmeryn meanwhile was standing next to Anna on a cliff side overlooking the village and the sea. She turned her head towards the village and as she saw the blunette exit the safe house she seemed to have a flash of reconciliation in her eye. "Ch... Chro..."
"YOU!"
~Anna's POV~
I turned when I heard the shout and saw Belleth, no! Beth, stomping towards me and Emmeryn. Making sure my sister-in-law was behind me, I drew Excalibur and put on a blank face. "Sister."
The girl growled and her once light green eyes were almost consumed by red. "I was wondering when you were going to show your cowardly face to me again,Anastasia." She hissed out my name as if it were poison.
I frowned. "How am I cowardly in your eyes Beth?"
"You hid within the walls of Ylisstol while Gilbert disappeared and Riku and I were kidnapped!"
I winced. "I didn't know at that time you three were taken. I only found out Gilbert was here the day of my wedding to Chrom. I found out about you and Riku Grima-Robin."
"That's no excuse!' she shouted, her silver hair wildly leaving it's short, high ponytail. 'Your disappearance upset Mom and Dad! The whole family! Did you even try to come home? Did you even try to contact us? No, you just had to find and warn Robin! You just had to join the Shepherds! You just had to fight beside and fall for a Prince, becoming a country's Queen! All the attention and fame went to you, just like it did in School back home!'
"WELL, NO MORE!' She slammed the butt of her staff onto the ground and it shook. I felt Emmeryn grab onto the back of my coat to keep herself balanced. Looking back to her, I saw some of the Shepherds, my husband among them, heading our way. 'LORD GRIMA PROMISED I WOULD RULE BY HIS SIDE WHEN HE TAKES OVER AND THEN EVERYONE WILL NOTICE AND APPRECIATE ME! AND YOU WILL BE CRUSHED BENEATH OUR FEET! MWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!"
With that said she ran towards me and I blocked her staff before it cracked my head open. "Beth, snap out of it!"
Making sure Emm was never in range of my sisters magic blast or staff hits as well as nowhere near the cliffs edge, I fought back trying to talk sense into her. "Beth! This isn't you! What would Mom and Dad say? What would Gil say? What would Riku say?"
"RIKU IS DEAD! HE DIED IN A CELL WAITING FOR YOU TO SAVE HIM! LORD GRIMA TOLD ME SO!"
"He's Alive and Safe!' I yelled back at her. 'Fortress Steiger was where you both were imprisoned right? The Shepherds freed all those prisoners and they helped us claim the fortress as a Conquest of the Halidom of Ylisse! RIKU STILL LIVES!"
With that I noticed her eyes flashing from red to light green and back. She was fighting it! "Come on, Sis! Fight it! Regain control! Don't make me cut you down!"
As we locked blade and staff and I heard her whimper. "Sissy, help... it burns! It... hurts! Knock me out! KNOCK ME OUT!"
BANG!
Beth collapsed to the ground unconscious. I looked up to see Emmeryn holding a healing staff in her hand. Her face had a small smile on it. I returned the smile and hugged her. She slowly returned it as Chrom, Frederick, Lissa and Robin came forward.
Emmeryn looked at Chrom and smiled a bit. "Mmm... Th-thank..."
Chrom sighed but smiled in return before turning to Robin. "... I'm torn, Robin. If she somehow regains her memory, it may mean greater pain for her."
Robin nodded. "It may, yes."
My husband couldn't stop the tears gathering in his eyes. "But damn it, I want my sister back! I want her to remember Lissa and me. I want to just...' he sighed. 'talk to her again. Is that selfish, Robin? I know I'd be returning her to a world that nearly killed her once already. She'd remember all the taunts, all the guilt, all the pressure she lived under..."
Robin shook his head. "It's a difficult situation, Chrom. I don't know what to say."
Chrom smiled, but looked away when he felt he could no longer hold back his tears. "She's alive, and free, and for that I should be doubly grateful. And yet... It's not enough. It's not enough for her to be alive like...this."
Emmeryn looked at Chrom and slowly walked over to him and took his face her hands. She examined his face with childish curiosity and one hand traced the Brand of the Exalt on his shoulder before reaching up to touch the same Brand on her head. "Don't...c-cry..."
Chrom gasped and blinked up at his sister. "Did you just...?" Emm just smiled.
Lissa had her smile widen. "She did! Oh, Emmeryn, it's you! You always used to say that to us when we were younger! I knew you'd come back to us! I knew it!" She palled both siblings into a group hug, and Emm wrapped her arms around them both as Lissa started sobbing.
Chrom gave a watery smile and chuckled. "All right, then. No more crying. For any of us. You were strong for me once. Now it's my turn. I'll keep you safe from now on, Sis. I swear it."
Robin came over and looked down at my unconscious sister. "It's lucky Emm knocked her in the head with her staff." He bent down and rolled Beth onto her back before we both gasped. Upon her neck was the same brand on the back of our hands.
It was then a memory came to me. ~It's a small island south of the country south of Valm. There, you will find healing for two who seem beyond healing.~
"Healing for two that seem beyond healing..." I muttered under my breath, looking between Beth and Emmeryn. Robin looked at me confused.
I looked at Excalibur before holding it up in front of me and muttering. "Spirit of Excalibur, show me the way."
My blade flashed gold, grabbing everyone's attention, before leaving my hands, spinning like the arrow of a compass before pointing South toward the sea. Not too far from the shore, all the Shepherds saw a Gold and Bronze ship appear.
I knew where it would take us.
"Chrom? I think I know of a way for Emmeryn to regain her memories faster." Picking up Beth and placing her on my back, I made my way down the non-steep side of the cliff.
"Where?"
With the sound of a small 'splash' as I hopped off the last foot to the shallows before looking up to the top of the cliff where Chrom, Robin, Emmeryn and the others were looking down at me. Excalibur, still pointing towards the grand ship, floated over near me still holding it's golden glow.
"To Avalon, of course!"
