Alyssa yawned, slowly awakening.
"Hey." Amanda said, sitting a little ways away.
"What are you up to?" Alyssa asked, trying to walk over to her friend only to discover her legs were incredibly sore.
"What's up with your legs?" Amanda asked, sounding suspicious. She came over to her friend and had her sit.
"You're one to talk." Alyssa said, looking at her limping friend. Amanda gave a chuckle.
"Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have annoyed him." Amanda admitted casually.
"This isn't a joke, Amanda!" Alyssa said angrily, pushing her friend away. "Look at your legs!" Amanda looked down. Her previously white leggings had become dirty previously from dirt and crud, but now they had deep gashes and were thoroughly stained with blood.
"Yeesh." Amanda commented.
"Yeah, Yeesh." Alyssa agreed. "We should do something about that."
"Since when are you a medic?" Amanda argued. Alyssa shrugged, but that comment made something click in her head.
"Hey, remember back in Lothlórien when we all got gifts?" Alyssa said, pulling out hers. Amanda's eyes widened at the little bottle.
"Alyssa, no!" Amanda said angrily.
"We have to do something!" Alyssa argued.
"Fine, we'll bandage it." Amanda huffed. "But we don't need to go wasting that! I mean honestly that could save lives and you'll use it on a small cut what is wrong with you?!" Amanda muttered curses under her breath as she pulled out some bandages and wrapped them around her various cuts, not noticing Alyssa looking hurt by her words.
"You shouldn't bandage your clothes too." Alyssa said quietly, seeing the bandages that went over Amanda's pants. She put the bottle back in her pouch.
"Yeah well…meh." Amanda argued, too annoyed to try again. Alyssa merely shook her head at her friend. Amanda was going to get herself killed one of these days. She nearly did already. Amanda went to look at her leg, but in response Alyssa gestured to her head. Amanda touched it, and felt the dried blood. She winced- it still hurt whenever she remembered it.
"Here." Alyssa said hastily, pulling out some supplies. "Let me help." Amanda fidgeted, but allowed Alyssa to attempt to bandage her head. In truth, she ended up looking like she had a really cool eye patch, but whatever satisfied Alyssa was fine with her seeing as she didn't care. (Although the lack of depth perception would have been nice to avoid).
"Now can I take a look at your wounds?" Alyssa nodded as Amanda rolled up her pants legs to reveal several large bruises on Alyssa's ankles.
"Eww." Alyssa said, shutting her eyes.
"Well, I see where the pain is coming from." Amanda said, pointing to the obvious bruises. "We should probably do something about that."
"Like what?" Alyssa asked.
"I don't know, put ice on it or something." Amanda suggested. "There is a reason I should never be a doctor." Alyssa pulled out a bag of ice and applied it to the wound.
"Sooo… now what?" Alyssa said.
"I told you, I'm not a doctor." Amanda sighed. Alyssa rolled her eyes.
"No, not about the wound, about the story." Alyssa clarified.
"Oh." Amanda looked up, caught almost off guard. "Well, once Treebeard wakes up we will all go to the Ent thingy and wait for a while before we go and attack Isengard."
"So we'll be doing more waiting." Alyssa sighed.
"Yep." Amanda fidgeted a little. "I would suggest texting the others, but… errr…." She cleared her throat. "my phone's broken."
"wait, what?" Alyssa asked, confused. "Why can't you get a new one out of your satchel?"
"No, I mean it won't send texts." Amanda said. "Yours won't either. I tested it while you were still asleep."
"You stole my phone?" Alyssa said.
"No, I allowed you to sleep while I tested an important hypothesis." Amanda reworded it. "Plus you're a very heavy sleeper."
"No I'm not." Alyssa argued.
"Well, you didn't wake up." Amanda replied. Alyssa was very nervous that Amanda had managed to do that without waking anyone up. A friend like Amanda with thieving skills is a very dangerous thing. "Anyways, for some reason or another we can't contact the others. Calls won't work either and none of the devices will connect to social media sites where we could contact them."
"Well, could the wifi be down or something?" Alyssa asked.
"No, because my laptop will still connect to the internet." Amanda countered.
"But this makes no sense!" Alyssa reasoned. "It worked all this time, and you were even texting last night! There are no special circumstances or anything."
"I know!" Amanda sounded irritated. "It doesn't make sense."
"Whaa…?" Pippin said as he started joining the waking world. His hair was ruffled in that adorable bedhead way that looks incredibly hot. Not that Amanda noticed or anything.
"Don't tell them anything." Amanda whispered to Alyssa as their companions woke up. "It's probably nothing anyways." Alyssa was sure there was more to this, but she was wise enough to keep her mouth shut. Unfortunately, she wasn't good at keeping a straight face.
"You're hiding something." Merry said immediately, looking at Alyssa as she gave a large nervous smile.
"I… uh…" Amanda face palmed as Alyssa stuttered along. "Well…you know… tired and…stuff… stop looking at me! Why are you judging me, huh? I have nothing to hide! YOU'RE HIDING SOMETHING!" She pointed an accusing finger at Merry. Pippin for one was very confused.
"No, I'm not." Merry said cautiously. But before Merry could say more, Treebeard woke up.
Alyssa shoved the ice back in her satchel. Merry gave her a look that said 'we'll talk later' as Treebeard picked them all up, droning on about Entwives and other Ent things. No one was really listening though. After a long, non-hasty walk (as he kept reminding Amanda) they finally reached Entmoot. As other Ents gathered, Treebeard set the four of them to the side before joining his kind.
"Oh that feels better." Alyssa sighed in relief as she set the bag of ice back on her legs.
"What's wrong?" Merry asked, seeing her pain.
"She's hurt." Amanda said, seeing an opportunity to put off Merry's interrogation and seizing it. "She's in a lot of pain, and could really use some rest."
"No I…" After a look from Amanda, she understood. "Oh yes, I really could. Merry, could you please help me lay down?"
"Of course!" A worried Merry rushed to her side, ready to do her bidding and for the moment forgetting his questions. No matter what, he would be there for her. He was willing to do anything to keep this girl safe. This sweet, naïve, beautiful, innocent, funny, curious, worried, perfect girl he may just be falling in love with.
Amanda pov
"Uh, we'll just leave you two lovebirds alone." I said, noticing the look in Merry's eyes. Alyssa gave me a look of annoyance, but Merry didn't seem to hear me. "C'mon Pippin." But as I went to stand, I swayed a bit. I clutched my head. "Woah."
"Miss Amanda, you should rest too!" Pippin rushed over to help me.
"No, no." I assured him. "Just a lack of depth perception throwing me off." I smiled at him, although he probably didn't understand what I just said. "Just lead the way." Pippin looked unconvinced, but he did begin walking away. Yet he did it backwards, so he could watch me and make me walk slower.
Now, having only one eye open can really throw off your walking, especially when your friend managed to cover up your better eye. Needless to say, the path I walked was swerved.
"Are you sure about this?" Pippin asked. He walked forwards so he was incloser to me.
"Yeah, I'm fi-WOAH!" I yelped in surprise as I tripped over a root I had thought was 5 feet ahead.
As I tried to brace myself by putting my hands out, I managed to push Pippin down too so we were both lying on the ground with me on top of him. Uncomfortably close. So close that I could see his sparkling emerald eyes that are so inquisitive and bright that they make you feel as if you're the most brilliant and special girl that those beautiful eyes will ever see.
Now those amazing eyes were staring right back into mine with their ever present amazement. I always thought that if someone looks at you enough, they will eventually stop being so amazed by you every single time. But Pippin and his cheerful eyes seemed to not know that. Every time I found him staring at me (which was a lot) he had that same look on his face. Even when he had seen me in my P.J.s or covered in sweat or bleeding or sleeping or just being awkward. It was as if he wanted to freeze every one of those moments to last an eternity.
I know it's stupid to think someone puts you on a pedestal like that. My motto for life is "nobody cares about your life as much as you do". I've always seen it as true. It helps me with all my self-confidence to know that I have to boost myself up or no one else will. But for the first time in my life, as I stared into Pippin's surprised and caring face, I realized someone else might care about me. Maybe even a little more than I do.
And I was more than a little tempted to kiss him right then and there.
"Miss Amanda?" Pippin asked cautiously, bringing me back to reality. In which I was currently starting to scare a certain hobbit. I shook my head, trying to get rid of this jumble of feelings that had suddenly arisen.
I tried to say 'I'm Sorry', but instead what came out was "You have green eyes." I would have kicked myself if that flexible.
"Uh…thanks?" He said awkwardly. I tried to apologize again, but my tongue had a mind of its own.
"It's just that I've never noticed before." I rambled on. "I've never really been close enough to see their exact color but now I am and… they're green." You know, the universe really likes messing with me. Karma's a real pain in the neck. Lothlórien had it coming.
"Yes, and yours are brown." Pippin replied, sparing me from continuing.
"Yes, I k-"
"They have this sparkle in them." Pippin continued, interrupting me. "They're wide and curious and perfect, as if you're too pure for this world." I gave a snort at that. "It's true!" He insisted. "I mean, they are also mischievous and sometimes...frightening, but they're definitely yours. They are filled with all these emotions that they can barely contain. The way you light up the world with your laugh, it's magical." I blushed at that. I wanted to stay like that forever.
Except my arms were getting tired, and I was pretty sure putting all my weight on him would kill him. So instead, I rolled to the side and sat up. Pippin quickly stood up next to me. Sitting and standing like that, we were just about the same height. Kinda sad, actually.
"Er, thanks." I said awkwardly, not sure how to respond and certainly not ready to spill my thoughts on him. "I mean, i am pretty awesome."
"Miss Amanda?" He asked me as we resettled.
"Yeah?" I replied.
"You are the most perfect maiden I have ever met and will ever meet." He told me, smiling. He frowned for a moment. "But please stop saying you're fine."
"But-"
"No." He argued, shaking his head. "I understand that you're too proud to ask for help. But you need it. You can't do everything."
"Yes I can." I quietly muttered, irritated but knowing it was true.
"You need to let me help you." He was quiet, trying to sound soothing. "I care about you too much to watch you suffer. You are too cheerful to be in pain."
I have the most self-confidence of anyone I know. Everyone looks to me for advice or to hang out or inspiration. I'm the perfect friend for when people are falling apart and need to remember life can still be fun. But no one has ever been there when I just needed someone to remind me i didn't have to do it alone. And here was the cutest boy I've ever met, insisting to help me when really I could use a helping hand. If I was someone more like Rachael, I might have cried.
"Pippin?" I said, hearing my voice crack. Ugh, i hate when it dose that and makes me sound like an idiot.
"Yes?" He said cautiously, not sure where this was going.
"Thank you." I whispered gratefully, pulling him into a hug. He smelled like apples and pine trees.
