CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

JACK'S POV

I was the first one to speak. "Mom, Dad! What are you two doing here?" I asked.

"I could ask you the same thing." My dad said a bit harshly.

My mom stepped up and put her hand on his shoulder and they stared into each others' eyes for a minute before she spoke. "Jack, we are here for your tournament. We came early to spend some time with you." She moved forward to hug me and then continued. "We are surprised to see you here, Kim."

Kim smiled and said, "We are here doing our tour. The kids and I wanted to see Jack's tournament, too. It is really nice to get to see the two of you." She was trying to be convincing, but she is just not a very good liar and I could hear the worry in her voice.

My mom looked back at my dad and said, "We heard you were in the doctor's office and were worried that you had been hurt. We were rushing to check on you."

I smiled at my mom and said, "As you can see, I am fine. I am really happy that you are here. We have so much to talk about, but right now we need to step out and let the doctor finish his exam with Kim." I turned to Kim and continued. "We are going to go and talk. I will catch up with you guys in a little while."

She looked at me shocked and then just nodded her head. I walked out with my parents. Carson and Kai came up to us and didn't know what to say either. "So are you all excited about the tournament this weekend?" My mom asked trying to ignore the tension between all of us. We all nodded our heads.

I looked at my friends and said, "Guys, why don't you stay with Rudy and the kids. I need to show my parents around and talk to them some." They both nodded again and went back over to where Rudy was sitting with the kids. "Mom, I really should go tell the kids that I will see them later."

"Oh, of course. We will wait here." She replied.

I walked over to the guys and Rudy. "Don't let the kids and Kim out of your sight! I don't know what could happen because my dad is capable of anything, but I need to know that you are all keeping them safe. I will be back as soon as I can." I said to them all seriously.

"No problem, Man. I owe you way more than this." Kai replied.

"Yeah. Don't worry about them! We've got this!" Carson added.

"Jack, tell them about your options. I am sure they will be ok once they know that this isn't going to mess everything up for you." Rudy said with a half smile.

"Hopefully. Just make sure they are safe. They are my life." I replied and then I walked back to my parents.

We walked down the hall and I started giving them the tour, but that was not what my dad wanted now and honestly it was taking all of my self control to not just start yelling at him for his part in this mess. He wanted to know what was going on and why Kim was here. He stopped and refused to walk any further. "Jack, this is ridiculous! What is going on here? The last that we had heard, you and Kim were not communicating and you were upset with her!" My dad asked in a very determined manner.

I stopped and faced him. I made sure that we were eye to eye and then I started talking to him as calmly as I could because I didn't want to make things any worse for Kim. "Dad, I said we have a lot to talk about and I was planning on doing that once we finished the tour. I just wanted to show you guys everything that I have been doing first and where I have been living." I waited for him to respond.

"Jack, I just wanted to know what is going on with you and Kim. You are my son and I think that we need to know about everything in your life, but especially the really important things. And tell me if I am wrong, but this thing with Kim is one of the major things in your life, right?" He replied with a raised voice.

I looked him in the eye, took a deep breath, and said. "Yes, Kim is major in my life and always will be. Even though I hadn't heard from her, I still loved her and you know that. We have been through too much to just fall apart like that. I need her in my life, Dad and she needs me. You understand that, right?"

He looked at me and shook his head. "Jack, I understand that. I just don't want this to mess up your life and your opportunity here." He put his hand on my shoulder and continued slightly calmer, but with a commanding tone. "You need to concentrate and focus so that you can fulfill all of your goals. You have the potential to compete professionally just like your grandfather always wanted for you. I don't want to see you throw all of that away for a girl that carries so much baggage with her."

That was about all that I could handle and then my mom stepped in front of me. "I really don't want the two of you to fight. We came a really long way to see you and spend time together. I have missed you so much more than you know. Please don't fight." She said and a tear ran down her cheek.

I wiped it away for her and then said, "I don't want to fight either, Mom. We do have to have a really important conversation." Then I turned back to my dad and looked him dead in the eyes. "Kim is not going to mess up anything for me. She doesn't have baggage. She is my life and you need to get used to that if you want to be in my life! If you want to know what is going on with us, why don't you tell me?" I asked and then just waited for his reply.

"What are you talking about, Jack? How would I know what is going on with you and Kim?" My dad asked trying to act confused by my question.

I stepped closer to him and said, "You were the one who arranged for us to not get each others' letters, right Dad? So like I said, you tell me what is going on?"

I could see in his face that he was pissed now. "What are you talking about, Jack? Your dad was just as shocked as me that you two were not writing. I arranged for you to get the phones and I should have told your dad because he had been looking out for you. He knew that you were enjoying yourself here and having fun with your new friends and wanted to distance yourself from Kim some. If I had known, I wouldn't have given you the phones. You should have told me, son." My mom said with tears.

Now I was in shock, but it only made me madder. "Is that what you told her? You lied to mom, too." I turned to my mom, put my hands on her shoulder, and said, "I never wanted space from Kim. I missed her too much just like I told you in my letters. I loved the phones, but things were already so tense that I made a stupid mistake and yelled when I was on the phone with her. I wasn't mad at her just at what had been done to us, but I took it out on her. We have moved past that and are doing much better now. Please don't cry, Mom. Dad lied to all of us." I turned back to face my dad and he looked furious.

"Jack, I have always done everything I could to make your life exactly what you want it to be. I was even willing to give this relationship a chance, but you are only 17 and she is a mess. This is not the kind of relationship that you should be in when you are trying to start a life full of discipline and focus. You need to let her go and I was just trying to help you see that. She was flirting and partying. I mean that is fine because you are both young and need to act young, but she wasn't pining over you. You need to be young too. You need to focus on what you want." He said and was slightly calmer by the time he was done.

"I am glad you said that because Kim is what I want." I said and before I could say anything else he yelled.

"You don't know what you want! YOU ARE 17! You want to be a dad! I don't think so! She is a mom, Jack! This is not a game. You can't just play house and then move on. Besides you have a gift and you promised your grandfather that you were going to make something of that gift. I will not let you throw it away for some girl!" He shouted.

"She is not just some girl! I love her and am going to be with her for the rest of my life! I can't believe that you would do something like this to me. I know that you were trying to do what you thought was best for me, but you were really wrong. I am not losing Kim or the kids. I will not leave them again. I am working with the grand sensei and altering my scholarship slightly. I am going to travel with Kim and our group and have the opportunity to train with some of the world's most renowned dojos everywhere that we go. I will be here for a week of training and test to assure my place in each tournament and will be able to finish everything that I want without giving anything up. I am not a child anymore and I need you to trust me to do what is best. Please can we stop this and figure a way to get through it together." I said to him as sincerely as I could.

I could see a moment of regret in his eyes and then he looked at me with a straight face. "Jack, I am sorry. I wish it was that easy. I really am sorry for keeping things from you. I thought I was doing what was best for you. I think that your plan sounds amazing and I wish that we had discussed this option sooner. Everything that I have done was just a father trying to do what he felt was best for his only son. Can you understand that and forgive me, even if it isn't over?" He put his hand on my shoulder and I just let his words sink in.

"Of course, I can. You are my dad and I want you in my life." Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. What did he mean by 'even if it isn't over.' "Wait! What do you mean by 'even if it isn't over'?" I asked and then as if on cue, I heard a blood curdling girl's scream and started running as fast as I could in the direction of it, but had this feeling that I was too late already!
