Hey everybody, I'm back with a new chapter for Becoming the Master and I decided to post it early since I'm in an outstanding mood at the moment. So without further delay, let's get to it!
Chapter Rating: T
Last Time: Ash managed to win his one on one fight against Viola Shalvick and gained five points for himself and his team, keeping them undefeated with 15 points out of 100. To add to the thrill of his victory, Squirtle evolved into Wartortle. Meanwhile, Derek and Chris began their mission to infiltrate Giovanni's airfield to gain information for the G-Men.

The mountain cave was filled with battle cries from the ferocious battle. Loud bangs echoed around the endless caverns and into the snowy valley outside. On stone battlefield, Red's Espeon was once again showing itself as a force to be reckoned with. The nimble speed that the psychic pokémon had was making it difficult for Ash to time and counterattack.
The night before when he and Gabite got thrashed had shown him two things. The first was to remain calm and not get flustered. The second was that he needed a pokémon that could challenge Espeon. After he mulled over his pokémon selection all day, he went with Glalie. Given that they were battling in a cold environment, it gave him the idea that Glalie would thrive on the field. So far, he had not been wrong, but he and Glalie had limited attempts to hit Espeon with their attacks.
"What are you going to do, Ash?" Red challenged from his side. "If you don't do something soon, it'll be a repeat of last night."
"Don't worry about that! Glalie and I will win this!" Ash retorted.
"Then do it!"
Red nodded at Espeon and the jewel on his head shimmered for a moment. A multicolored beam shot forth at Glalie. The Psybeam attack had been causing problems for Ash since he first fought Espeon the night before. Now he was more prepared for it. Although it was a risky move, he had to try it.
"Glalie, use Ice Beam!" Ash pointed at the oncoming Psybeam.
A light blue ball of frost generated between Glalie's horns before shooting forth in a beam of solid ice. The two attacks collided midway. Neither of the attacks appeared to be gaining ground and it soon became a matter of trying to overpower the other. Espeon, while keeping Pysbeam going, started to creep towards Glalie.
"Glalie, go full power! Now!" Ash hollered.
Glalie's brow furrowed and his Ice Beam seemed to grown in size. The beam of ice began to go faster and faster. The power all but stopped Espeon's advance and began to push him back. A chilling wind flooded the field as the cold air spread from the attack. The Pysbeam died out and the Ice Beam continued its path for Espeon. When the beam of light hit Espeon, he opened his mouth in a silent scream. Ice covered his entire body and soon he was immobilized.
Seeing the opportunity he had to get an extra attack, Ash continued. He pointed at Espeon as excitement filled him.
"Hurry and use Headbutt!"
Glalie zoomed forward and slammed hard into the block of ice. The large ice block glided across the field and bounced off the rocks like a hockey puck. Ash ordered Glalie to do it again, but just as he was about to hit the block of ice, Red and Espeon came back with their own counter.
"Use Pyschic!" Red nodded.
Loud cracks reverberated around the field followed by a loud crash. Espeon's telekinesis shattered the ice prison. His eyes were now glowing blue. Glalie was stopped dead in his tracks and thrown back across the field. When he came to a rolling halt on the ground, his body was pelted by large chunks of ice that Espeon broke free from moments ago.
"Get up and use Double Team!" Ash yelled.
Glalie got off the ground and hovered in the air. His grin returned as his body gave a flicker. Suddenly five copies of Glalie appeared and surrounded Espeon. His prankster nature kicked in and he let loose a taunting cackle. His copies did the same as they circled around Espeon. It only grew when Espeon continued to look around frantically for the true Glalie.
"Good. Now I can get a quick hit!" Ash clenched his fist. "Now use Crunch!"
Glalie and his clones stopped circling and all shot at Espeon. Their laughter echoed around the field when they would phase through the flustered pokémon. The real Glalie showed up behind Espeon with his mouth wide open. His teeth bit down on Espeon's back and garnered a loud cry of pain from him. He laughed again when he let go and joined his copies in circling Espeon again.
"Once more, Glalie! Do it!" Ash called out.
"Not this time." Red shook his head.
Red had to give Ash credit for his quick thinking. He managed to get Espeon's guard by playing a game of illusions. However, now that he was taking a similar approach, Red was more than ready to counter back. He watched the copies slow down and gave his command a second later.
"Use Detect!"
Espeon's eyes snapped open and a small twinkle appeared in them. His ears perked up and he stopped searching for the real Glalie. When he stopped moving, so did Glalie and his copies. The copies swarmed him again, but this time it did not have the effect they hoped for. When Glalie charged from the left with his mouth wide open, Espeon flickered and vanished altogether. The sudden disappearance made Glalie come to a dead halt and look around for him.
"Psybeam, now!" Red shouted.
Behind Glalie, high up in the air was Espeon. His jewel shimmered again and the multicolored beam darted forward. A loud bang resounded around the dark cave and Glalie gave a startled cry of pain. Espeon landed on the ground a second later and slowly crept to the smoke cloud. The cloud vanished seconds later and revealed Glalie looking around.
"Crap!" Ash grit his teeth, seeing Glalie's confused state. "Glalie, snap out of it!"
"Use Swift!" Red continued.
Dozens of gold, transparent looking stars appeared around Espeon. They then became more solid and flew at Glalie. The stars whistled as they cut through the air and slashed Glalie repeatedly. With each hit, Glalie inched back in pain.
"Use Double Team!" Ash hollered.
Glalie split into copies once again which made Red smirk.
"That's not going to work, Ash!" Red shook his head.
"You say that, but just wait and see for yourself!" Ash smirked back.
Although he said that, Ash was truly stumped. Red had played him to figure out his new strategy with Glalie early. The fact his counterpart was able to do what he did to get back on top of the battle was outstanding. Then again, he was the champion in his world for a reason. If he wanted to get inside Red and Espeon's guard for another attack, he had to think of something better. The amount of damage that Glalie took was enough to take out a lot of energy.
His mind raced for an answer. He looked around the cave and shivered when he felt the freezing wind grace him again. He let out a shaky breath and could see it in front of him. It felt a lot colder than normal inside the cave. His eyes then looked up at the ceiling where the sunlight normally shone, but it was not there. It was not dark outside, but he could see the powdery snow blowing in from the hole.
"A blizzard?" Ash wondered. "Wait a second!"
He had to buy himself some time. He diverted his attention back to the field long enough to command Glalie again. His hand reached into his back pocket and found what he was looking for. He pulled out his Pokédex and brought up Glalie's information. During his free time he learned a couple interesting features about the electronic encyclopedia he was holding. The biggest one was that it stored personal information on each of his pokémon. Before he even came to the tournament he updated all the files on his pokémon when it came to their evolution, their attacks, and even their stats.
He scrolled down Glalie's known attack list. He finally found what he was looking for. His thumb pressed the attack and the data was brought up a second later.
"Glalie, dodge and use Protect!" Ash returned his attention to the fight.
Glalie dodged a Shadow Ball attack from Espeon and smirked as a green barrier surrounded him. The barrier took the follow up Psybeam attack and absorbed the power, allowing Ash to return his focus to his Pokédex for a second. After reading the information on the attack that Glalie knew, he looked back up at the hole in the ceiling again. It was his best chance to turn the tables on Red as well as take absolute control of the field. He tucked the device away and with a newfound determination, started his move.
The dome surrounding Glalie vanished and he darted to the left to avoid another Shadow Ball. The Shadow Ball exploded upon hitting the wall, forming a crater in it. The vibrations from the attack made more snow drift in from the hole.
"Glalie, use Ice Beam on the ceiling! Let's go!" Ash grinned.
Glalie grinned as well and flew high above the field to stay a safe distance away from Espeon. He fired the Ice Beam a second later after he aimed it at the hole. The hole was soon sealed up and he continued covering the ceiling with the ice. The more the ceiling was covered, the colder it got. By the time Glalie finished his attack, Ash, Red and Espeon were shivering from the intense cold.
"Interesting." Red crossed his arms. "He is trying to slow Espeon down by making it as cold as possible."
He was sure that was Ash's intent. By making it cold, it would force Espeon to move a lot more to stay warm and keep blood flowing. With Glalie being an ice type, he was immune to it and allowed him to control the field. He smirked at his counterpart and silently commended the smart move. That was one thing he enjoyed about his battles with Ash. He was always able to come back in some wild way to make it more interesting.
"Espeon, use Double Team!" Red called out.
Espeon ran at Glalie and suddenly filled the field with dozens of copies. They all swarmed Glalie who watched them closely. Espeon and his copies ran all over the field and mixed together to keep Glalie guessing where the real one was located. While Espeon continued his shuffling, Ash narrowed his eyes at the sight before him.
"Damn-it! He picked up on it too early!" Ash cursed.
He was hoping that the cold would force Espeon to slow down and make Red get careless to attack Glalie so he could lure him into his trap. Now that Red was buying time by warming Espeon up with running by using Double Team, it made it more difficult to force him into the trap.
"Glalie, use Ice Beam on the field!" Ash pointed at the ground.
Glalie did as he asked and his Ice Beam hit the floor. Soon, a thick sheet of ice covered the field and Espeon and his copies slipped and slid all over the place. The quick change of field made Red's brow furrow again.
"Let's try this," Red muttered, looking up at Glalie. "Espeon, use Pyschic!"
Espeon and his copies came to a stop and looked up at Glalie. All of their eyes glowed blue and illuminated the dark cave. Glalie was gripped by the telekinetic power and then thrown hard at the ice covered ceiling. While Red smirked at his counterattack, Ash smirked because Red managed to do what he hoped.
"Come on! Come on! Come on!" Ash watched Glalie continue for the ceiling.
A loud crash came a second later as Glalie slammed into the ice covered ceiling. He opened his eyes a second later and drifted away, but a large crack had appeared where he was a moment ago. The crack grew and grew until all of the ice was threatening to shatter.
"Glalie, use Headbutt on the ice!" Ash grinned.
Glalie smirked and rushed for the epicenter of the crack. While he shot at it, it got Red's attention.
"Wait a minute! He…" Red's eyes widened for a second. "That ice is going to crush Espeon!"
Red looked at the frozen battlefield and cursed. He only had one escape route, but it was risky. However, if he didn't do it, Espeon was a sitting duck. He cursed under his breath and went with his gut decision.
"Dig!" He called out.
Espeon managed to penetrate the thick ice just in time. The second Espeon burrowed underground, the ice on the ceiling gave way. Thunderous crashes filled the caverns as the ice shattered to piece on the frozen battlefield. When it was all over, the hole in the ceiling had become a massive opening, allowing the blizzard from outside to rage inward.
"Yes!" Ash cheered inwardly.
Red now realized his mistake. It was never Ash's intent to slow Espeon down. He was trying to get complete control of the field. He inadvertently gave control to Ash after he had Espeon slam Glalie into the ice with Pyschic. Freezing the ceiling entirely to make the hole large for the snowstorm to come inside was his goal and he succeeded in doing it. His chances of winning the battle had gone down significantly, but he was not going to give up.
"Espeon, use Psybeam!" Red yelled.
The multicolored beam erupted from the frozen ground and shot up at Glalie, but he easily evaded it. Espeon emerged from the ground and slide for cover behind a giant chunk of ice. Snow continued to drift in and started to lower all visibility.
"Glalie, use Blizzard!" Ash shouted.
Glalie's eyes shone blue and he let out a howl. The snowstorm from outside started to intensify. The wind picked up and blew wildly around the field, carrying snow and small pieces of ice. Wind howled loudly as the snowstorm became so powerful that it resulted in a complete whiteout. Glalie was nowhere to be seen, but he lurked in the raging snowstorm waiting to strike.
"Espeon, use Echoed Voice!" Red hollered over the wind.
A loud cry pierced the wind and the snowstorm shifted direction. The snow was directed back outside and revealed Glalie was now near the center of the field. He turned to the source of the noise and a wicked grin came to his face. The grin on Ash's face grew as well now that he got his wish.
"End it with Sheer Cold!" Ash pointed at Espeon.
"Shit!" Red thought.
A violent gust of wind kicked up behind Glalie and shot forth. It hit Espeon head on and swirled around him wildly. The snow swallowed Espeon whole, and after a few seconds, blew away. Espeon was lying on the ground and struggled to push himself up. He managed to stand and send a glare back at Glalie, but his eyes rolled into the back of his head. He fell back to the ground with a soft thud into blissful unconsciousness.
"Alright!" Ash punched the air. "Glalie, that was awesome!"
Glalie flew over to Ash with a wide grin, but it soon turned into a mischievous smirk. Just as Ash was about to hug him, he was frozen in place with an Ice Beam. Glalie laughed at his frozen partner before breaking him free from the ice.
Ash sneezed and shivered as the cold air hit him again. He sent a somewhat annoyed look at his laughing partner, but let it slide. He laughed and pat Glalie, praising him for a job well done. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Red whisper something to Espeon's ball before clipping it back to his belt.
"Let's have a quick review and we'll call it a night." Red nodded at their snow covered rocks.
"Right!" Ash nodded back.
He returned Glalie to his ball and hurried over to Red with Pikachu close behind. His feet were soaked from crunching his way through the snow. When he sat down, Pikachu jumped up to his shoulder and let out a small sneeze.
"You're coming along well." Red looked at him. "You only have to face two of my pokémon before we have out six on six battle."
"Thanks." Ash smiled.
"Tell me your whole plan to win this battle. You were struggling at first, but you were able to find a way to counter back."
Ash blinked at looked down at the ground. He gently scratched Pikachu's head as he tried to answer Red's question. He never had a plan to begin with and relied on quick, improvised moves. It did not occur to him to use Sheer Cold until he saw the blizzard from the hole in the ceiling. He then formulated his plan to control the field by freezing the ceiling and the field to make Espeon attack the ice on the ceiling to open the hole more.
Even though it did not go the way he planned, his control of the field allowed him to succeed. He forced Red to break the ice and give him the win by allowing the blizzard to enter the field so Glalie would not miss his attack. Since Sheer Cold had a low accuracy rating, he needed the blizzard to make it impossible to dodge.
When he finished his explanation to Red, he saw the smile on his face. Red then looked up at the open ceiling and towards the sun that poked out from the clouds. He stood up and whistled to his Pikachu who climbed up on his shoulder.
"Nice job." Red turned back to him. "Be ready for my next pokémon tomorrow, Ash."
"Okay." Ash nodded.
"One thing I want you to do from here on out is to try and find a way to control the field. The more control you have, the higher chance you have to win."
Ash nodded again and watched as Red walked back to the center of the snow covered field. Red snapped his fingers and there was a flash of light. The cave had reverted back to its normal state, and the bright sunlight poured in from the repaired hole. He turned back to Ash and gave a two fingered wave before vanishing in the light.
"We're almost there, Pikachu," Ash said, turning to his best friend.
"Pika!" Pikachu grinned back.
"We finish Red's training, merge, and that will be one less problem to worry about."
Pikachu nodded in agreement as they turned around and walked towards the stairs.
The jeep's engine roared loudly as the gas pedal touched the floor. Chris swerved to avoid a tree and could feel his palms sweating profusely. He glanced over his shoulder to see Derek and his Gengar fending off their pursuers. He could see the five sets of headlights from vehicles behind them and cursed under his breath. He turned the wheel of the jeep and veered right down a steep embankment.
"A little more warning next time!" Derek shouted at him.
"Well, excuse me!" Chris snapped back. "You said you got the intel, right?"
"No! No, I didn't get it! Because you, in your infinite wisdom got compromised!"
Fifteen minutes earlier…
Derek, Chris, Umbreon and Haunter came out of the woods and got low to the ground. They inched their way to the ridge overlooking the airfield and stopped to check it out. The moonlight had illuminated the entirety of the airfield to let them see everything. Chris pulled out his binoculars and scanned the field for enemy patrols and the best route to get to the hangars.
"Doc Holiday, this is Boss Man. The drone should be entering your airspace at this time. Break. Be advised, I'm seeing a lot of enemy movement around the hangars." Wes said.
Wes Dekker was another agent that worked with Derek and Chris. He was one of the veterans that G-Men had, being responsible for exposing and capturing the head masterminds of a criminal group in the Orre Region five years back. Nowadays he worked as the point of contact for agents in the field.
"Roger that, Boss Man. We are about to infiltrate the airfield, over," Derek said.
"Roger. I'll keep overwatch with the drone and keep you posted on patrols, over," Wes answered.
"Copy. Do we have AGMs should things get messy? Over."
"Negative on the AGMs. You know the ROE. No engagements unless we have the intel to prove it, over."
"Roger. We're moving now. Out."
Derek looked at his watch and then to Chris who tucked his binoculars away. This was supposed to be a quick in and out and the best way to do that was to split up and bail when everything was accomplished. He mulled it over for a minute before making his decision.
"Chris, you take hangars three and two." Derek pointed them out. "I'll take hangar one."
"Got it," Chris muttered back.
"Chris, this mission is important and my responsibility. So please stick to the plan I briefed you."
"Scarface, relax, okay? What do you think I'm gonna' do?"
Derek placed a firm hand on Chris' shoulder. He was not in the mood for this and needed to make his intentions clear. He lowered his tone to emphasize his point.
"Just do it. And if you call me Scarface again, I'll kick your ass."
Chris could see the seriousness in his partner's eyes. He meant every word that he said, even the threat about beating him up. While he found the latter thought amusing due to his impressive size and height, he knew better than to underestimate him. He finally nodded and Derek let go of his shoulder.
The two of them split up. Derek and Umbreon went left while Chris and Haunter went right. They would enter the airfield from separate sides and work their way to the back of the second hangar to regroup and head for their extraction point.
Derek and Umbreon dug under the fence and quickly moved to two fuel tankers that were parked nearby. When Umbreon went on guard, Derek pulled out two blocks of C4 and placed them on the tankers. Even though he was confident the mission would go well, he wanted a contingency if they had to go loud. Whether they were discovered or if Chris did something extreme, he wanted a failsafe. Once they were planted, he and Umbreon crept to their designated hangar.
Meanwhile with Chris and Haunter, they successfully entered from their end. He shook his head at the thought of his partner. He knew how important the mission was and knew the consequences if they failed it. What he was more upset about was the fact that Derek, being the control freak that he was, all but called him out for having a notorious record of being too impulsive. That's who he was and nothing was going to change that.
He came to a halt a second later after hearing two sets of voices. He peered around the side of the jeep he was crouching by and saw a two man patrol. Looking back to Haunter, he pointed ahead, raised two fingers and covered his eyes. Haunter disappeared with a cackle and appeared behind the two men who turned around in surprise.
"What the…" One began, but fell to the ground a second later.
Haunter's hypnosis worked like a charm. After he confirmed the coast was clear, he crept out, and with Haunter's help, dragged the bodies to the side of their first hangar. They ended up hiding them in some bushes before walking to the side door. Haunter placed her hand on his shoulder and the pair of them phased through the wall. They appeared inside a second later and hid behind a giant stack of crates.
Chris peeked around the side again to see dozens of cots, filled with sleeping personnel. He felt his throat go dry and shifted his gaze up to the catwalk that ran around the top of the hangar. He could see one man keeping watched over the entirety of the room. There was a ladder nearby, but using it would cause too much noise. Haunter once again gripped his shoulder and pulled him up through the floor behind the guard.
He quickly covered the guard's mouth and put him in the sleeper hold, subduing him. He set the knocked out guard against the wall and bound his hands together. He pulled out his camera and began taking pictures of the hangar. Once he finished, he had pictures of the enemy personnel, some blue prints of the Pewter City Smithsonian and Sylph Co's headquarters.
"Doc Holiday, this is Archangel. I've got the intelligence from hangar one and I'm making my way to hangar two, over," Chris whispered.
"Roger. I just entered hangar three. I'll meet you there when I finish, over," Derek answered back.
"Copy. Archangel out."
Chris shook his head. He thought Derek would have been faster than that, but he paid it no mind. In his head, the more intelligence he gathered, the better it would look for him. He and Haunter departed the hangar and made their way into the second one. Just like the first, it had the same layout, except the hangar had a massive plane inside. He took another look around and found two guards keeping watch on the catwalk above, but there were four others around the plane.
"I need to check out that plane." Chris looked at the lowered ramp.
He motioned for Haunter to subdue the two guards keeping watch on top and then for the ones around the plane. After two minutes, Haunter returned successful. Chris returned her to her ball and made his way for the plane. Once he climbed inside, he pulled out his camera again and crept down the fuselage. He climbed up the small stairs and to the second floor.
Chris kept his ears sharp for any sounds, but after hearing nothing, continued his trek. A door was ajar on the left side of the aisle. He stopped just outside the door and glanced inside. Nothing. He opened the door and closed it behind him. His eyes scanned the room and a grin spread across his face. He hit the jackpot. There were dozens of files strewn about the desk, just waiting to be read. He tucked his camera away and began sifting through file after file. His temper started to rise when none of the files offered anything of use.
"Tch, wrong room." Chris tossed the file back on the table.
He shook his head and was about to turn around, but a loud click met his ear. He felt his blood run cold. He heard that sound dozens of times before, and there was no mistaking it. A barrel of a gun was pointing to the back of his head.
"You move and your brains will be over the wall," the man's voice warned.
"Crap." Chris slowly rested his hands on his head.
Unless Derek had a trick up his sleeve, he was dead.
Derek and Umbreon were inside hanger three. The hangar was the most guarded and it took him time to subdue the guards to get inside to begin his task. He searched the entirety of the hangar and found a lot of military grade equipment that was no doubt stolen. He managed to acquire an enemy radio that they could use to listen to future transmissions and he tapped phones.
He checked his watch again. It had been ten minutes since he and Chris entered the airfield to search it and three minutes since Chris informed him of clearing the first hangar. So far everything was running smoothly. Almost too smoothly. He shook his head to clear the bad thoughts and returned his focus to the computer in front of him. After he traversed the hangar, he came to a large office in the back and entered it with Gengar's help. Once inside, he worked as fast as he could to search for anything vital for future missions.
Derek was careful to keep the office in the same state he found it in to keep suspicion down. During his search he found the same things Chris did. That was when he turned his attention to the computer. He decrypted the password and managed to enter it. He hooked up the DSM to copy the files on the computer which was moving at snail's pace. Only fifteen percent of the files had been copied.
"Come on you piece of junk," Derek muttered, looking at the bar.
He heard his radio crackle again and waited for whoever it was trying to reach him.
"Doc Holiday, this is Archangel. I've been compromised, over," Chris said.
Derek's eyes screwed shut and he silently cursed his partner. He was not sure what happened, but now he had bigger issues to take care of. He looked at the upload bar and slammed his fist down on the desk. Twenty percent. He pulled the DSM free and shoved it back into his bag and signaled for Umbreon to get ready to move. He pressed down on his radio to give a SITREP.
"Boss Man, this is Doc Holiday, we have been compromised. Break. We will be making our way to the extraction point in one mike, over," Derek said.
"Roger, Doc Holiday. The chopper is en route to extraction point Alpha, ETA eight mikes. Out," Wes answered.
Derek closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He fumbled around his pocket and pulled out the clacker for the C4 and was glad he took the extra step to plant it. He gripped the clacker tightly and was ready to detonate the explosives.
"Archangel, this is Doc Holiday. Be ready to move on the signal and acquire transport. Out."
Derek and Umbreon departed the office and slowly made their way to the front of the hangar, using the mountains of crates as cover. The entrance of the hangar was wide open, but he could not see anyone outside. He took the chance and got alongside the wall. He looked around the wall and could see Chris being held at gunpoint and surrounded by at least twenty men. He held the clacker and kept an eye open for the right moment.
"We know you are out there!" Shouted the man holding Chris captive. "You have three seconds to comply or I kill your partner!"
"Get ready to move, Chris!" Derek thought.
"One… Two…" The man got ready to squeeze the trigger.
Boom! Everyone turned in the direction of the C4 detonation to see two giant balls of fire erupt. With the distraction in play, Chris wasted no time. He disarmed the man that had him at gunpoint and punched him hard across the face, knocking him to the ground. He then sprinted to the nearby jeep, hopped in and fired it up. The engine roared to life and the tires squealed as he sped in Derek's direction. He pulled up outside the hangar and Derek dove in with Umbreon.
"Drive! Now!"
Chris turned the wheel again and started going uphill. They were near their extraction point and were close to being home free. He looked back and cursed again when the jeeps were still in hot pursuit of them.
"Doc Holiday, this is Big Bird, we see you below, over," their pilot said.
"Roger, Big Bird. I see you, over!" Derek answered back.
"We're setting up for a hot extract, over!"
"Negative! Negative!"
Derek watched as one of the jeeps pursuing them was immobilized from Gengar's Thunderbolt. Now there was only four chasing them. He looked up and could see their chopper pass them overhead.
"Say again your last, over!" Big Bird answered back.
"Pull off! I say again! Pull off! We're going with the contingency plan, over!" Derek replied.
"Roger, we're returning to base. Good luck. Out."
The chopper's blades faded away and Derek turned around. He tapped Chris on the shoulder to make sure he heard the plan. Chris nodded back and continued towards the extraction point. Beyond their extraction point was a large cliff that would serve as their contingency plan. They both pulled out their Poké Balls containing their flying pokémon. Derek recalled Gengar to his ball and clipped it to his belt.
They burst through the trees and sped through the clearing with the jeeps still on their tail. The cliff was now one hundred meters away and closing fast. The trees were growing thinner as they neared the cliff. Chris put the jeep on cruise control and kept his hands on the wheel until they passed the trees.
"Jump!" Derek shouted.
The jeep soared off the cliff, but Chris and Derek jumped off just in time. They pushed off the jeep and started to plummet to the ground. Two loud cracks filled the air and two large pokémon exited the balls and caught them. Chris and Charizard took to the sky with Derek and Dragonite beside them. They looked back to see the jeeps that were chasing them had stopped shy of the edge.
"Better luck next time, suckers!" Chris shouted at them.
While Chris continued his taunts, Derek paged Wes again.
"Boss Man, this is Doc Holiday, the mission is complete. We're returning to base, over," Derek said.
"Roger, Doc Holiday. Return to base. Out," Wes answered.
