Katniss POV
The alarm blares and I begin to panic. I don't know what's going on. I look to Peeta for help, he's the only one who isn't hustling towards the doorway.
The Capitol is here, they're here to get you and take you away from here. They want to kill you still. They want to get you. More importantly they want to kill your baby right in front of your eyes.
Everyone in here wants to take you right to them. Don't trust anyone Katniss, don't be fooled again.
"What- what's going on?" I stammer out. Looking from side to side about the room. Everyone is neatly filing out of the room Peeta standing across from me holding his hand out tentatively for me to grab.
"We need to go." He answers simply.
"What's going on?" I ask more firmly, taking his hand and standing up. He begins to move towards the door, dragging me behind.
"We have to go down to the shelter. That means it isn't anything good." He tells me as we turn into the hallway.
"What? Where-where are we supposed to go? We haven't done this before." I ask loudly, eyes widening as we continue along the hall that is slowly filling with people who are all filing down.
"Just stay behind me. You are technically assigned to my room so you'll stay there." He tells me confidently.
I follow him, going along with the flow of people, all traveling down into the depths of the earth, trying to keep up with them all but there are hundreds of flights of steps to go down and with each one I descend the more tired my legs get. Finally I feel like my legs have been totally turned into jello and I can't move them anymore. I move to the side of the hallway, so that I'm out-of-the-way of the others, and lean on the wall. Peeta notices and turns to face me.
"Come on it's not that much further. When we get there you can lay down again." He tells me sweetly.
"I can't... it's just too much." I close my eyes for a moment and can feel the ground start to waver under my feet. I can feel the flow of people start to dwindle as Peeta grabs my hand and begins to pull me down the hall. He drapes my arm over his shoulder and I half walk down the hall.
"Come on, it's close." He tells me holding me close, practically carrying me. "Don't close the doors! Wait for us!" He calls down the hallway as we hear gears beginning to turn and the gears clicking into place.
We finally reach the door, which Peeta was right about, it was only a few hundred feet away, and he thrusts his hand in the closing gap ordering them to stop.
"Sir, please remove your hand from the door area before we have to close the door on it." One man says from inside.
"Please let us in. We need to get in." He pleads with them.
"I'm sorry sir, we can't let you in, even if we wanted to." The man tells us.
"What do you mean you can't?" Peeta exclaims as he attempts to open the door himself.
"Can't you just open the door so we can get in?" I beg with them, fearful tears filling my eyes.
"No the door locks at as we close it and we can't open it again until the bombing is over." I look at Peeta and see that he wears a fearful expression that most likely mimics my own.
"You can't do anything?" I ask sinking to the floor as panic rises in my stomach.
"I'm sorry miss. I can't do anything..." He says sadly then adds, "Mam, are you pregnant?" His eyes widening in fear.
"Katniss is that you?" I hear a familiar voice say just past the door.
"Finnick, can you get Prim and my mother for me?" I ask looking up at him.
"Just a second." He calls over his shoulder as he turns and sprints in the opposite direction.
"Can we do anything to help?" The man asks.
"Can you open the door?" I ask curtly.
"No." He replies sheepishly.
"Then no." I tell him angrily.
"Actually could you get us a few mattresses, a bag from the desk, and we'll need several of those bottles of water? We'll also need a first aid kit." Peeta asks confidently. He looks at me on the floor for a moment before looking back to the man in the gap of the door.
"Why do you need all those things?" The man asks.
"We'll need the bag for the same reason as everyone else, the mattresses will help to shield us from any small debris. Then the water bottles for us to drink and in case she goes into labor so we can keep it somewhat sanitary." He explains like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"What are your names? What compartment are you in?" He asks quickly.
"Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen, we're in 454 E." Peeta tells them shortly looking annoyed with the man.
He then turns and calls out what all we'll need to those people around him and we hear a flurry of movement inside the cavern. Prim appears in the door, looking slightly pink in the face. She looks to us and I can see the confusion and fear evident on her face.
"Katniss are you okay? Why are you out there? You need to get in here." She exclaims moving closer toward the metal doors.
"Prim we can't get in. The doors are locked in position. We're stuck out here." I start only to have the fear take over me as I blurt out, "I'm so scared." Just before my throat closes up and makes those choking noises as I begin to sob violently.
"Katniss, calm down. We'll figure something out." Peeta tells meas he wraps his strong arms around my shaking body. "I know you're scared, tired, and you don't understand, but we've got to keep our heads. Be calm. I know you feel like you were breaking down. I know that it gets so hard sometimes, Be calm. Take it from me, I've been there a thousand times." He whispers in my ear soothingly. I nuzzle into him and grab the collar of his shirt to pull him closer to me, thinking that this is all just a bad dream and he can make it go away. We stay like that for a moment or so, perhaps it was mere seconds that still somehow felt like an eternity.
Just so you know I have no idea how the compartments are numbered so... yeah. Hope you liked it! Although I won't know if you don't review. Hint hint. Nudge nudge.
Bye!
