Chapter 36
Antonio looked at Matt and then to Gabby. Unable to think of anything to say he left to go into the break room, Gabby following him.
"Did Matt-" Gabby began to say but Antonio looked the door and shut the blinds, "Antonio you're scaring me," She said her eyes wide and fearful.
"I think," He began, "And please don't freak out. I think Jim shot and killed Dad's old partner and gave him a fractured hip."
"What?" She exclaimed, "How do you-"
"I was fifteen. It was all over the news some twenty-two year old killed a Homicide Detective. Obviously he's older now but I thought he looked familiar when I saw him."
"I don't remember that."
"Of course you don't! You were only four." He looked at her and shook his head. "Do you remember going to see Pop in the hospital; he was at home for a long time."
"Yeah, that was then?" She asked and he nodded. "Antonio, he'd still be in jail."
"They could never pin him to the murder. There was enough doubt in the juries mind of his innocence."
"What are you going to do?" She asked, already knowing the answer.
"I'm telling Pop," He placed his phone on the table and put it on speaker and waited for his father's secretary to answer.
"Superintendent Dawson's office. My names Allison, how may I help you?"
"Hi Allison, its Antonio. Is my Dad in? It's really important?"
"Of course Detective, one moment," She said and pressed a button to connect him to his father.
"Antonio, What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine Pop," He assured him, "Gabby's here too; you're on speaker phone. We have something we need to ask you."
"Alright," He responded, already knowing something was going on, "What's this about?"
Antonio took a deep breath, "That man who killed Detective Larson and injured you; do you remember his name?"
"Yes, of course. The man murdered my best friend? Why is there a lead?"
"Kind of," He motioned for Gabby to take over which she reluctantly did.
"Dad, what was his name?" She wanted to know for sure before dragging Matt into this mess was the last thing he needed.
"Jim Nelson."
Gabby took a sharp intake of breath and then suddenly cried.
"Would one of you tell me what is going on?" Jose demanded his patience running thin.
"Pop,' Antonio picked up the phone, "Matt's brother in-law, he's the man, he's been abusing his daughter and wife for years. There all at the station now."
"Oh," He ran a hand over his face, "Is he being charged?
"Not right now. The wife is saying the daughter's lying, she's protecting him. The bruises are there though."
"And, And…." Gabby's voice hitched a little, "I think the mother's sexually assaulting the girl."
"What?" That was the first time Antonio had heard that. "Gabby that's a serious accusation."
"I know!" She glared at him, "I have my reasons alright! She needs to be checked out by a doctor."
"Ask Nick if he can come in and talk to her. Not in any official capacity of course."
"I'm not sure our SVU guys will like that very much," Antonio mused.
"Antonio," Jose shook his head, "When this gets out to the press, and it always does. Matt's career is going to be all but ruined. His brother in-law is a cop killer. You have to tell him!"
"Pop-"
"Now Antonio. I'm going to stall them as much as I can."
"Right," He nodded and hung up the phone and went back into the bullpen where Violet was still crying, wanting to see her mother.
"Matt, we need to talk."
He turned to look at his best friend, clearly annoyed. "It can wait."
"No, it can't." Antonio said forcefully, "It needs to be now."
"It better be important," He warned.
"It is," He said and led Matt into the break room.
"Alright man, what is it?" Matt asked in a rushed tone.
Antonio took a deep breath, not knowing how Matt would react to the news, "Jim was the prime suspect in a murder investigation many years ago." He began slowly, "It involved my father and his partner who was killed."
"Are you… are you saying…"
"My Dad's pretty sure; I think he's coming down here."
"Oh my gosh," Matt shook his head in disbelief, "I remember Christie telling me he was arrested but I don't think even she knew it was for murder, It was before they met, about a year before probably. He's six years older then she is. My mother wasn't happy about the age difference so I remember."
"You didn't know until today," Antonio explained, "So its alright. My Dad's going to run damage control with the press."
"I'm not worried about me. I'm worried about Violet. What's going to happen to her? And Christie? If she has been hurting her she'll go to prison."
"Matt we don't know anything yet," Antonio reminded her.
"You know what," Matt laughed, "When they first came up one of the things I was worried about was how they managed to get into a secure unit. Isn't that stupid?" He shook his head not believing he could think of something that seemed to trivial only minutes before.
"They must have caught the door when Roman and Burgeass came up," Antonio told him, "That's the only thing I can think of."
"Yeah," He ran his hands through his hair, "I can't believe this is happening!"
"UNCLE MATT!" Violet banged on the door sobbing uncontrollably, "DON'T LET HIM TAKE ME!"
"What?" Matt swung the door open and Violet ran into him, "What's going on?" He asked lifting her up, "What're you doing here Nick?" He asked his fiancée's cousin sceptically.
"I called and asked him to come," Gabby cut in, "He's already cleared it with Chicago SVU. He's just going to talk to her and then report back to them."
"NO!" Violet screamed.
"I don't know," Matt saw how scared she was and didn't want to let her go, "Can you do it here?"
"No," He shook his head, "I want to take her down to District 33, that's where the SVU work out of; they have a playroom to talk to kids in. Matt this is serious."
"Uncle Matt!" Violet sobbed, "Don't let him! I hate him!"
"Violet," Gabby spoke up not sure if telling her who Nick was would help, "Nick's my cousin and he's a police officer too; in another really big city. He works with kids a lot. He wants to talk to you. I can come if you want."
"I want Mommy!" She turned and stared at them all, "Mommy! Mommy."
"I just want you to tell me what happens at your house alright," Nick tried, "You can even draw pictures if you want. Auntie Gabby can come with us to the playroom but I need to speak to you alone."
"NO! NO! YOU'LL HURT ME!"
Nick was taken aback, knowing that almost confirmed what they'd all feared, "Alright how about we go into the break room and talk. I'll keep the blinds open. Will that make you feel safe?"
"And the door unlocked?"
"Of course," He nodded holding out his hand, "Can we talk now?"
"Alright," She finally nodded, "But I don't like you still."
"That's alright sweetie," He took her hand when Matt set her on the ground and then led her into the break room.
After Nick had finished talking to Violet she'd only wanted to see Gabby or Erin, not even Matt. Nick hadn't wanted to talk to Matt before the SVU detectives so he was left in he dark and completely furious.
It was near lunchtime when Nick final returned with two New York SVU Detectives with him. The entire squad room was filled with reluctant relief as it meant that maybe Jim and Christie could finally be charged with something.
Jim had lawyered up immediately and so his interrogation was getting nowhere; not to mentioned he was quick to point out to his lawyer that his brother in-law was a Detective in the district and that this was all just a vendetta.
Christie, although not asking for a lawyer wasn't saying much either; She defended her husband at every turn and was saying her daughter was sick and was always lying; that she needed to see someone.
"Detective Casey?" The male SVU Detective approached him, "Mind if we talk in private?"
"No, He shook his head, "I'm not sure-"
"Use my office," Voight offered seeing as Violet and Gabby were in the break room still.
"Thanks," Matt led the detective into his boss' office and shut the door, "What's going on? What did my niece say?" He crossed his arms demanding an immediate answer.
"Detective what your niece told my colleague is very… well it's very graphic and…"
"Tell me!" He demanded.
"She said that father makes her mother come into her room at night and…"
Matt felt his stomach turn and ran as fast as he could out of the room and into the bathroom. Once he came back out he was red with anger and he went to storm towards the interrogation room but Gabby stopped him.
"Babe," She placed both her hands on his chest and looked up at him, "Is it really worth all this? I don't think you want to be charged."
"Gabby I don't care!" He tried to push past her but couldn't without moving her, and he didn't want to hurt her.
"Think about Violet. She needs you Matt. She needs one good parental figure in her life."
"My sister isn't a bad mother; I don't…"
"She's in a horrible situation. She'll get help and so will Violet."
"Uncle Matt!" Violet ran towards him, "I'm sorry. I let Mommy and Daddy hurt me," She looked down at the floor and began to cry.
"Oh no sweetheart," Matt assured her, "You didn't do anything wrong. Come here," He lifted her up and hugged her, "You're going to be staying with Auntie Gabby and I for awhile alright?"
"Okay," She said.
