Beth could not do anything but gape at the woman in front of her. When Beth didn't provide the answers Candy was obviously looking for, she rounded on the tall man standing silently next to her.

"What the fuck are they doing here?" She was equal parts outraged and shocked.

Beth wanted to pinch herself. There was no doubt that it was Candy, with her normally voluminous peroxide hair pulled back into a sensible ponytail. It didn't sound like Candy though. Instead of the rounded drawling southern accent she'd come to associate with Candy and with Merle, this woman had a crisp British accent.

The man, whose name Beth still didn't know, shrugged just barely. "Change of plans," he said which wasn't really an explanation.

Candy seemed to agree with her. "That wasn't the plan."

"I said there was a change," he repeated, his tone not deviating much. He was unperturbed by the somewhat intimidating figure Candy cut.

Candy's eyes darted to take in the captives who had stayed silent, hoping to glean information from their jailers. Well, it was possible that was why Tyreese stayed quiet. Beth suspected Karen and Haley were just as stunned as she was. Hearing that completely different voice coming out of a familiar mouth was incredibly disorientating.

Candy lowered her voice and took a step closer, "I told you where they would be so that they could be left out of this."

That made Beth sit up straighter, disbelief starting to give way to the reality of the situation. Candy knew this man; she knew something about what was happening.

"He decided that this would be a more fitting punishment."

There was no doubt from the way the man said 'he' that it was someone very specific they were referring to. In fact Candy visibly stalled, chewing on her bottom lip before nervously opening her mouth, presumably to argue some more.

Her companion had reached the end of his patience though and while he didn't snap, his next words gave no illusions as to his willingness to continue the conversation. "It's not up to you." Almost as an afterthought he added, "It's not up to me either."

He gestured at Tyreese, who was still discreetly clutching at his shoulder. "Fix this up," he commanded in that flat tone of his and left the room. This time Beth was prepared for the door to open and she managed to catch a glimpse into the outside hall. She saw at least two men, wearing all black and holding big guns.

Her shoulders slumped and she figured from the frustrated glint in Tyreese's eyes, he'd seen the same thing.

"You bitch," Haley snarled as soon as the door was shut. She made as if to lunge at Candy but the blow to her head had obviously affected her. She ended up collapsing back against Karen.

Candy appeared to hold her tongue, resisting the urge to retaliate with an insult of her own. "You should rest," she advised in an even tone. Her worried eyes were the only indication she was uncomfortable in the situation.

She met Beth's stare and noticeably flinched. Candy composed herself and turned to Tyreese. "I need to look at your shoulder," she explained calmly.

Tyreese regarded her warily. "Do you know what you're doing?" he asked sceptically. She didn't sound like Candy anymore but she still looked like her. Her jeans were tight black and her shirt showed off every curve.

Candy's smile was wry and humourless. "I should. I'm a doctor."

Beth felt her eyebrows lift in surprise without conscious thought.

"Don't judge a book by her cover," Candy chided her half-heartedly.

"What's going on?" Beth asked, finally finding her voice.

"I don't know much more than you," Candy answered without hesitation while Tyreese struggled to get his shirt up one handed, wincing the whole time.

"That's bullshit," Haley hissed in a low voice.

Candy flicked another look at the outspoken girl as if just seeing her for the first time. "It isn't. He doesn't tell everyone everything. We just do our own small bit. No one can betray him that way."

"What was your bit?"

"I was a spy," she replied promptly. "Kept track of things."

"How could you?" Karen demanded, sounding less angry and more distraught.

"People have lots of reasons to do what they do," Candy replied cryptically. She seemed to lock Beth with a stare that made her shift uncomfortably. Did Candy know she wasn't what she said she was? After all, someone had known to deactivate her bracelet.

Candy turned her attention to Tyreese, helping him carefully lift the shirt up and away.

"I would have cut it off," she apologised, "but I didn't think they would provide you with another shirt."

"It is fine," Tyreese said with almost jarring politeness. "I'd prefer the cover."

Candy snapped on a pair of gloves and inspected the wound carefully. She narrowed her eyes and probed further. Tyreese jerked under her touch.

"It didn't go through clean but I don't think it broke apart too badly either. I can get the worst bits out and stitch it up."

Tyreese nodded grimly. "Do it!"

Candy reached for a syringe when Tyreese grabbed her wrist. She jumped under his touch and for a second Beth thought he was going to attack Candy and she had very mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, now that her wits had returned, her mind was a swirling mess of questions and anger. But on the other hand she still didn't want to see Candy hurt.

Tyreese didn't resort to violence. Instead he shook his head. "No painkillers."

"This will hurt like hell," Candy told him after a pause.

Tyreese gritted his teeth and tried to shrug. It wasn't as effective as the shrug from the man who was here before. The grunt of pain betrayed the nonchalance of the gesture.

Beth figured that he wanted a clear head and she understood that. Candy didn't question him any further, reaching for the forceps. Beth had to avert her eyes, unable to stand the sight of the small metal tongs going into the bullet hole. They made a disgusting wet noise and Tyreese groaned in agony.

It seemed to go on for hours but in reality, Beth knew that Candy had moved quickly and efficiently. She could only dig out two of the larger pieces. She was halfway through advising him that he would have to go to a hospital soon when she caught herself. She flushed delicately.

Beth wasn't an expert but it looked like whatever else Candy had lied about, her being a doctor seemed legitimate.

"Is Candy your real name?" Beth asked, not sure why that was the first question she thought to ask. Candy had already turned to Haley to observe the slice on her head, rolling on a fresh pair of gloves.

"Candice, but I've been Candy for so many years it hardly matters."

Beth was about to ask another question but Haley was squirming away from Candy's touch. Abruptly, Candy grabbed Haley's chin deftly with her fingers.

"I get it, you're a tough chick but you're not going to be any good to your friends if you keep bleeding into your eyes. So stay fucking still."

Haley couldn't find the words to argue, taken off guard at being spoken to so directly. Her mouth closed with a snap and she sat very still. Candy looked relieved and very gently brushed some hair away from where it had matted in blood.

"Who was that guy?" Beth spoke up again at the same time Tyreese managed to mumble an inquiry about their current location.

"Shumpert, though that is almost definitely not his name. He works for- "Candy trailed off.

"For who?"

"I don't know," Candy confessed, begging Beth with her eyes to believe her. "We just call him the boss. I've never met him, I work specifically for Shumpert. I Think Shumpert manages this guy's North American interests. I wasn't lying when I said no one knows the full story. I'm not sure even Shumpert knows this guy properly."

"Why are you helping him?" Haley pressed, less confrontational than she had been minutes ago.

Candy swallowed, "it's complicated."

"Tell us!" Beth instructed, surprising herself with her tenacity. She wanted to understand what made a person lie like this.

"My sister is sick. She... it's complicated. I needed the best care and most of the procedures are experimental at best but she's still alive."

Beth saw it then, that while Candy might be sorry for what was happening to them; she had a pretty important reason to be where she was. Beth wanted to be furious with the other woman but she got it, she really did. What wouldn't she do for her brother and sister?

Beth released a dramatic sigh. Tyreese took advantage of the lull to ask his probably more important question again.

"Do you know where we are?"

Candy tugged at the gloves she had been wearing, avoiding looking directly at any of them now. Her silence was answer enough. They didn't have her loyalty. That was horribly clear. They might get some harmless answers but if they were going to escape they were likely on their own.

"I've taken too long," Candy mumbled, rising to her feet swiftly. As if to punctuate her statement, the front door opened and Shumpert came in. He didn't appear to be suspicious but he catalogued the scene efficiently.

He jerked his head at the door, indicating that Candy should follow. Beth watched with a sinking heart as Candy gathered her supplies and left. Beth wanted to do something, anything, but she didn't know what would be helpful.

The door closed all too fast and Beth bowed her head in disappointment. She snapped to attention when she realised that she could hear them talking outside. Candy hadn't quite closed the door completely.

"I have to go for a few days, he needs my help."

Beth could only just make out the rumbling monotone words Shumpert was saying.

"So he doesn't tell you everything." Candy was gloating and smug. They clearly didn't have the friendliest relationship.

"You're hilarious," he remarked dryly. "He's closing in on a target."

"Who is the unlucky person?" Candy asked bitterly.

"Persons. It's a family. I haven't been briefed. He's going to send through a dossier in the next few hours, I'll read it on the plane."

Beth's heart started to pound violently in her chest. There was no way this was a coincidence. Somehow the man hunting her family down was the same man masterminding this crime ring. She didn't need Candy to tell her who the man was, she knew!

"You're such a good dog, to not ask too many questions."

Candy was deliberately goading him, Beth realised. Trying to lure him into saying more than he should. Unfortunately, Shumpert didn't seem to be taking the bait. Not exactly.

"He's following up on an old vendetta. I didn't know the man had children until today."

"Children?" Candy was aghast.

"Adult children," Shumpert clarified, "they vanished after their parents died."

"Good, I hope they stay gone," Candy stated emphatically.

"If they're lucky they'll stay hidden." For a second it sounded like Shumpert sympathised but Beth wasn't sure. Her mouth was dry and she could do nothing but sit there and listen. She had no doubt that they were talking about her, her family. Shumpert must not know what she looked like or she'd be done for. She had been irritated at the lack of information Candy was able to provide because of the lack of internally sharing and now she was blessing it.

"But they're Hershel Greene's kids and so he'll track them to the ends of the earth."

"Who?" Candy asked, confused.

"Hershel Greene. They're rivalry is infamous. Was infamous."

There was some more conversation that Beth couldn't hear properly, her ears were practically ringing with what she'd just heard, when Shumpert indicated they had to move. Who were they closing in on? Not her because he'd be heading in this direction. But was it Maggie or Shawn?

"I forgot to leave some antibiotics, you go on ahead."

Beth had a second to compose herself before the door opeedn again. Candy closed the door with a quiet click behind her, stalked straight in her direction and bent down.

"Never mind who I am, who are you, Beth Wallace?"
