Chapter Fourteen: Crying Wolf
A phone ringing woke all of us up the next morning. I groaned as I turned around on Caroline's couch in her room. "Seriously?" I yawned loudly.
"Sleeping, go away." Caroline complained after me.
I heard a huge thud followed by Elena's grunts. I looked over at the bed to see that she fell off the side. I snorted out a laugh before laying back down on the couch.
Elena reached over and grabbed her cellphone before answering, "Hello?" Her voice ringing out through the quiet room made us all groan and protest.
Elena crawled her way into the hallway as Stefan started speaking on the other line, "How was the slumber party?"
"Good." Elena laughed a little. "Much needed. When can you and I have one?" She asked. I groaned a little into my pillow. It was times like this where I wish I didn't have super hearing.
I tried blocking out the rest of Elena's phone call but when my phone started ringing, I got pillows thrown at my head. "Alright, alright." I slammed my hand down on my phone before pulling myself out of the bed and into the hallway with Elena. "Hello?" I grumbled into the phone, not happy about being woken up.
"Goodmorning, Sunshine." I heard Damon's voice greet me lightly on the other end.
"Goodmorning, Damon. What can I do for you?" I asked with a yawn as I leaned against the wall next to Elena.
"Can you get here in under 10 minutes?" I heard him ask nicely. I rolled my eyes but sighed.
"I'll be there soon."
I entered the boarding house to see Damon and Alaric talking. They both looked over at me as I entered the room. "What's up? What's going on?"
Damon walked closer to me. "I was just telling Ric here about what your sister's father happened to give us last night."
I nodded my head, "The stake with the white oak ash."
"Correct." Damon shut the door behind me before we moved back into the parlor room. "You dip the dagger into the white oak ash that dates back to the originals."
"If there's any truth in that." I said grabbing the stake and handing it to Alaric so he could look at it himself.
He grabbed it out of my hand and looked up at Damon and I from the chair. "So, you think it's a setup?"
"It could be." Damon shrugged. "Guy's a weasel."
"Something like that." I muttered under my breath. Damon winked at me before getting back on topic.
"I wouldn't put it past him." Damon finished as he turned around and threw his arm around my shoulder. I relaxed into his side, like I was at home. "What are you up to today, Mr. Saltzman?"
"Well, Jenna and I were supposed to go her family's lakehouse but somehow we both got roped into doing this historical society thing at the Lockwood's." Alaric explained standing up and coming next to Damon and I.
"I heard Elena say something about going to the Lakehouse earlier on this morning, to Stefan." I shrugged my shoulders, moving away from Damon's side to grab a couple drinks. "She wants to get away from John, not that I blame her."
"Well, Elijah's the guest of honor at the Lockwood's tonight." Damon smirked looking at Ric.
"Oh, no." I mumbled handing Damon and Ric their drinks before making one of my own.
"Tell me you're not going to kill him at the tea party." Ric pleaded.
I scoffed a laugh. "He's not that stupid." I shook my head before looking up at Damon. "You're not that stupid, right?"
"No." Damon crinkled his face looking at the both of us. "I'm not stupid." Alaric stared at Damon, not believing him. Damon scoffed, "I want to know his endgame before I kill him, but I do think it's time Elijah and I officially met."
I scoffed at Damon, but he just smirked down at me. I wasn't going to be able to change his mind about this, so I might as well go along with it.
"Raegan, Damon-" I heard Jenna call us as she walked over. "What are you doing here?"
"Just participating in our part of being part of the councel." Damon smirked before dragging me away from Jenna and over to Carol and Elijah who were talking privately.
"Damon!" Carol gasped. "Raegan!"
"Carol." Damon greeted with a sweet smile that I knew what fake.
"What a surprise." She wrapped her hands around his as they kissed each other's cheeks, before she turned to me and gripped me into a tight hug.
"Hi, Carol." I said letting go of the older woman.
"Hi." She grinned down at me before turning back to Elijah, "Elijah, I want you to meet Damon Salvatore and Raegan Gilbert." I smirked behind Carol's back at Elijah's non-surprised expression. "Both their families are part of Mystic Falls' founding family."
Damon hummed graciously, "Such a pleasure to meet you."
Elijah's face expression didn't change as he held out his hand for Damon to shake. "No, pleasure's mine." He turned over to me but I shook my head.
"Germaphobe." I pretend cringed at the thought of touching Elijah's hand. Damon tried to hold his smile back from me, but the side of his lips turned up a hair.
I move away from Damon for one second and he's already brought Elijah into a separate room to talk privately. I growled under my breath before barging into the room. Damon looked back at me as I closed the door, not so quietly.
"Really?" He snapped as I walked past him to lean against the desk near the windows. I smirked my response, he just rolled his eyes.
"What can I do for you, Damon?" Elijah asked getting straight to the point.
"I was hoping we could have a word." Damon said turning around to look at Elijah, instead of me.
"Where's Elena?" Elijah asked, for what reason, I wasn't too sure.
"Safe." I answered quickly. "With Stefan." I jumped onto the desk and crossed my legs that were bare because I was wearing high waisted black shorts. "They're laying low, you know."
"Bit of a werewolf problem." Damon added with a snark, knowing that Elijah knew about this werewolf problem.
"Oh, yeah." Elijah nodded. "I heard about that."
"I'm sure you did since it was your witch that saved the day." Damon said with a sarcastic undertone.
"You are welcome." Elijah said looking up at Damon and I.
"You are thanked." I stressed looking at Damon, giving no room for protest.
"It adds to my confused on exactly why you're here." Damon said leaning next to me, crossing his arms.
Elijah ran his hands over the leather couch he was standing in front of. "Why don't you just stay focused on keeping Elena safe and leave the rest to me." Elijah turned his whole body to face Damon and I.
Elijah turned away to leave the room, but Damon quickly got in Elijah's way- forbidding him from leaving. "Not good enough." Damon shook his head with a side smirk.
Elijah grabbed Damon by the throat and slammed him against the wall behind me. I jumped up from the desk and sped over to the two boys.
Damon tried grabbing Elijah's throat in return, but Elijah wasn't even phased. He grabbed Damon's hand and twisted it around, clearing breaking it. "You young vampires, so arrogant."
"Alright, boys." I snapped glaring at both of them. "Let's not act like little children." I growled under my breath, daring either one to argue with me.
Elijah smirked slightly before dropping Damon. "You should listen to your girlfriend, Damon." Elijah said turning his back from both of us. "How dare you come in here and challenge me?"
"You can't kill me, man." Damon stated. "It's not part of the deal."
Elijah raised his eyebrow at Damon while I just glared- he didn't know when to shut his mouth.
"Silence." Elijah whispered before grabbing a pencil and stabbing it into Damon's neck.
I gasped as Damon fell into my shoulder, holding the pencil in his neck. I quickly grabbed the pencil and pulled it out, getting blood all over my white shirt.
"I'm an original." Elijah started. "Show a little respect." He wiped his hands off with a rag before handing it to Damon, to stick on his neck. Damon snagged the rag out of his hand before wiping his neck off.
"The moment you cease to be of use to me, you're dead, so you should do what I say." Elijah smiled down at Damon, but it wasn't a happy smile- more of a teasing smile. "Keep Elena safe." He nodded at me before leaving the room.
"Calm down, you healed 5 minutes ago." I snapped as I wiped the blood off Damon's neck with a clean rag and some water.
"I am calm." Damon snapped, glaring down at me.
I slapped the side of his head before dropping the dirty rag in the trash and covering it with some toilet paper. "Don't snap at me. I wasn't the one that didn't keep their mouth shut and got their neck stabbed with a pencil." I snapped before looking back at Damon. "You're lucky it was just your neck."
"You're right." Damon sighed before wrapping his arms around my waist and shoving his head into my neck.
I sighed as I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned into his touch. "What am I going to do with you?" I asked jokingly as I ran my fingers through his hair.
"Today was a bust." Damon said looking up at the ceiling as I cuddled into his side.
"How's the neck?" Alaric asked sitting across from us on the couch.
"Sore." Damon answered and I snorted. He glared down at me but I didn't say anything further.
"Yeah, that Elijah's one scary dude but with nice hair." Alaric pointed out and I actually laughed this time.
"He does have that." I nodded my head and Damon looked down at me. "You have nice hair too, don't get pouty." I patted his stomach before grabbing my drink and downing the rest of the bourbon.
"Hey, you want another one?" Ric asked getting up from the couch. I nodded my head and handed him my glass before settling into Damon's side again.
Damon didn't answer, he just held up his cup for Ric to grab. "He's gonna be hard to kill." Damon sighed as he lightly ran his fingers through my hair.
"Yeah, I'd think twice before I'd trust that dagger and some ashes to do the job." Alaric pointed out pouring the bourbon into the glasses.
"Especially because John was the one that gave it to us." I nodded my head agreeing with Ric. "We're gonna need more info."
"I'm out of sources." Damon shook his head looking at Ric and I.
Ric looked at his watch on his wrist as he handed Damon and I our drinks. "Ah, I got to go. I got to go pick Jenna up." He said downing the rest of his drink. "Don't worry. I'll, uh, show myself out." He said looking at Damon and I's position.
"Good luck." Damon mumbled into my hair.
A crash came from the main hall where Ric just walked into. I jumped out of Damon's arms before rushing into the main hall to see Ric holding his stomach. He groaned as he turned to face Damon and I with a knife sticking out of his stomach.
He fell to the ground as someone jumped down from the staircase. He ran forward towards Damon and I. Damon grabbed him before the guy could grab me and swung him around a bit. The guy landed on Damon's back and I growled before ripping him off and throwing him onto the ground. My fangs peeked out of my mouth as I stared at the werewolf- I could smell it all over him.
He growled back at me before jumping up and slamming a tube both into mine and Damon's neck. I growled as I felt the vervain enter my system. I could hear Damon and the werewolf fighting into the hallway, as I tried regaining my strength.
I didn't hear anything for a while until I heard the guys voice, "Whew! Damn, you're strong." He commented making me believe that Damon was down from the vervain. "It took the whole syringe."
The door opened and I looked up through cloudy eyes to see guys from the other night come into the house. I growled under my breath as they looked at Damon. "Grab that one. He's dead." The werewolf that drugged us pointed to Ric.
Jules came into the house and smirked at Damon on the ground. "Hi, Damon, Raegan" Her smirk down as did her gun. "Nice to see you again." And then everything turned black.
I groaned as I felt pins poking into my neck. I opened my eyes to see Ric on the ground with a huge hole in his stomach. I looked at his ring and sighed, he'll be okay. I looked around when I heard Damon moan to see that he was in the same position as I was, just across from me instead of next to me like Ric.
"Morning, Sunshine." I heard the voice from before. I hissed as I looked over my shoulder at the werewolf. Damon groaned and moved his head to the other side as the guy started talking, "I saw this movie once, some torture porn flick."
"That doesn't surprise me." I growled under my breath, loud enough for him to hear me.
He glared over at me before continuing, "Anyways, they had this collar device that was really cool, so I just modified it some with some wooden nails, and when I pull..."
I felt the wooden needles stab my neck and I groaned as my neck was pulled forward, the same time Damon started moaning. I felt tears leak out of the corner of my eyes from the pain until it settled down from the sound of Jules' voice, "So I hear you have the moonstone."
Damon started laughing and I looked over at him like he was crazy. "Oh, if you only knew the irony of this moment right now." He said and I sighed thinking about how he basically did the same thing to Mason when we were trying to get the moonstone.
Damon stopped laughing and looked up at Jules, "Let me tell you how this is gonna go." He said with a snarl. "You're gonna torture me, I don't talk, someone loses a heart." Jules looked down at him with a poker face, not letting any emotion show. "Last time, it was your boy Mason.
"This time..." Jules stepped closer to Damon. "It'll be you, and your little girlfriend." She looked up at the werewolf holding the chains and I felt the needles get pulled and pushed into my skin again, leaking more blood onto my newly changed shirt.
"You know the great thing about buckshot is?" Jules said looking down at Damon and i with a smirk. "It scatters though the body, maximum damage."
"You're still talking?" I asked looking up at her with a glare. Another tug on the chains.
"Where's the moonstone?" She asked holding up the gun at Damon.
"Get over it, honey." Damon said with a smirk. "You're never gonna get it."
"You looking for this?" I heard Elijah's voice come out from behind us and I sighed. How many times is this guy gonna save our asses?
Elijah walked down the steps and placed the moonstone down on the table next to the glasses and bourbon we were drinking earlier. He moved away from the stone and waved his hand, "Go ahead. Take it."
The first stupid wolf ran forward trying to grab it, but Elijah being an original- was faster and stronger. Elijah grabbed the wolf's heart and pulled it out of his chest cavity. Two more sped forward trying to help their already dead friend, but the same ending happened with them. Their hearts on the ground.
Jules sped out of the house before Elijah could try and grab her, not that he made any move towards her. He did however move towards the coward that tried hiding in his jacket- the one that has been pulling the chains over and over and over.
"What about you, sweetheart?" Elijah picked the guy up from his jacket and hummed. "You want to take a shot?" He whispered close to his face. The guy shook his head repeatedly as Elijah still talked, "No? Yes? No?"
Elijah turned back around to look at Damon and I. "Where the girl?"
We both shrugged our shoulders but Damon was the one to speak up, "I don't know."
Elijah looked at the young male before shrugging, "It doesn't really matter." He quickly punched the wolf in the face, and a loud crack sounded through the room. Definitely a snapped neck.
Elijah grabbed the chains that were holding me down and snapped them with little effort. I sighed as my hands were free and quickly grabbed the vise around my neck and snapped it off.
"You do realize this is the third time I've save both your lives now?" Elijah said looking down at Damon before he turned around, grabbed the moonstone and left the house, leaving us to deal with the clean up- per usual.
"So he planned to kill her all along." Damon said talking to Bonnie on the phone. I growled as I grabbed the phone from him, ignoring the body that I just dropped on the carpet.
"He, what?" I snarled into the phone. Damon rolled his eyes before finishing the cleaning, but still listening into the phone call.
"Yeah." Bonnie answered. "The sacrifice is part of Elijah's plan."
"Heard you." I glared at the ground. "Loud and clear." I hung up the phone and snarled before throwing the phone onto the couch.
"Hey, watch it." Damon said looking at his phone on the couch. I rolled my eyes before looking down at Alaric that was still laying on the ground, out cold.
He groaned as he finally started to wake up. "Finally." Damon said looking over at Alaric. "You missed all the fun." Damon commented sarcastically as he picked up the broken chains on the ground.
"I wouldn't call it fun." I snapped looking back at Damon.
I heard Alaric dialing on his phone, probably to call Jenna and apologize for not picking her up. I grabbed the hearts that were lying on the floor before throwing them into the fire.
"There you are." Jenna said answering her phone.
"Yeah, sorry." Alaric started off awkwardly. "I've just been grading papers." He shook his head at his lame excuse and I sighed. He groaned before making another excuse. Damon and I gave him a look before Damon dragged out the blood stained carpet. "Honestly... I fell asleep. I'm sorry." Alaric studdered. "Jenna, I'm a jerk."
"No, it's fine. I'm just glad you're okay." Jenna answered on the other line. She didn't mean it.
"Sorry." Alaric apologized again. "Tomorrow, I'm all yours, okay?"
"Sure. Sounds great." Jenna answered without enthusiasm. I shook my head sighing before placing the bodies all in a pile.
"Alright. Goodnight, Jenna." Alaric whispered into the phone. Jenna whispered a quick goodnight before they hung up the phone.
"You fell asleep?" I asked not looking at him.
"I didn't know what to say." Alaric sighed as he leaned back in the chair.
"Grading papers would have been better than you fell asleep." I rolled my eyes. "You boys don't get it."
"I'm gonna head out." Alaric got up from the couch. "Tell Damon I said bye." I nodded my head at Ric's request before deciding to go find Damon.
I could hear him talking to Stefan over the phone in his room, so I followed the sound. "Straight from the witch's mouth." Damon explained as I jumped onto his bed and landed behind him. Damon looked back at me with a smirk before going back to explaining to Stefan, "He was gonna go through with the whole sacrifice."
I grabbed the phone out of Damon's hand, "You should probably just keep her away a little longer, and tell Elena I love her for me." I made a kissy noise through the phone before handing it back to Damon.
"Be careful, try not to get yourselves killed." Stefan replied through the phone.
"Yeah, it's been a day for that." Damon said with a sigh. I grabbed his hand with both of mind and starting playing with his daylight ring.
Stefan hung up the phone and Damon threw his phone onto the table next to his bed. He sighed as he leaned back onto his bed, his head landing on my legs. I sighed as I looked up at the ceiling. "Ric said bye."
He nodded his head as he closed his eyes, "I heard." He pointed to his ears. He turned his head towards me, "Are you okay?" He asked looking at my neck.
I nodded my head. "Yeah. I'm fine. What about you?"
"Fine." He nodded.
"How'd we end up in this messed up life?" I asked running my finger's through Damon's long locks.
"I don't know." He whispered closing his eyes.
I finished showering as Damon finished cleaning downstairs. I slipped on one of Damon's black shirts and jumped into bed.
It didn't take long for Damon to join me. He grabbed my hand and pulled me closer, sighing into my hair.
"Goodnight, Raegan." He sighed softly.
"Goodnight, Damon."
