Chapter 36

$&^%&&*^

A few days had passed since they found out about Esther and Mikael and they were still trying to process what they could do about it. Now that Hayley was renting the compound out to her wolf pack, there seemed to be no time for peace and quiet. Someone was always making noise somewhere. Between the noise and her nightmares about Hope, Becca found it hard to sleep.

After another night with no sleep, she headed downstairs to find a small buffet set out. The food looked delicious. Looking over she saw Hayley coming out of her room, probably curious about the food too. Becca had snuck a grape just as Klaus came downstairs. "So . . . which restaurant is missing a compelled chef?" Hayely asked as she eyes all the different foods.

Becca gave Klaus a tired smile as he leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Certainly a card I've played in the past, but I had no hand in this."

Hayley examined the food, looking for something to eat. "Hmm. Then I guess we have Elijah to thank."

"This wasn't my doing." Elijah said as he came down the stairs in front of them.

Three looked perplexed as he joined them. Hayley looked between the brothers concerned. "Then where did this all come from? Oh!"

The lid moved as something underneath it moved. Klaus and Elijah shared a look before Klaus reached down and lifted the lid. Two birds flew out from under it, a card fluttering around on the plate. The girls both gasped in surprise, Becca gripping Klaus's arm out of habit. "What the hell was that?" Becca said, looking for some kind of answer from the brothers.

"Maybe I can explain." A voice said out.

It was the girl from the other day, Becca realized as she looked up. Confused, she looked at Klaus and Elijah and saw their stunned expressions. They knew her. "It's not possible." Klaus muttered under his breath.

Before she could ask him what he meant, he zipped across the room and stood in front of the other girl. To her credit, she didn't flinch. She just stood there as he examined her. "It's really me, Nik. It's me." She said, her eyes tearing up as she stood in front of him.

Klaus didn't know what to think. Becca could see the confliction on his face. He wanted to believe her, but he didn't trust it. Whoever this girl was, she meant a lot to him. "Klaus, who is she?" Becca asked, her eyes flickering between the brothers.

"This is our sister. Nikolena." Elijah said, his expression blown away.

Becca's eyes widened in surprise. Now she realized why this girl looked so familiar. Seeing her standing with Klaus, it was hard to deny the similarities between them. Both had the same dirty blonde hair and the same blue eyes. "Y-your sister? How is that possible? Kol said she died years ago." Becca said, looking at Elijah like he would have all the answers.

Klaus suddenly grabbed the girl's neck, lifting her feet off the ground. She choked out a noise as she grabbed his hand. "What kind of game is mother playing with us? Who are you?"

Without warning, Klaus was suddenly thrown across the room. Lena dropped to the ground, Kol now standing in front of her protectively. Klaus zipped up onto his feet, ready for a fight. Becca zipped to his side, holding him back. When Kol was sure Klaus wouldn't attack, he knelt down to Lena's side and checked to make sure she was alright. "This isn't a trick, brother. Mother brought her back from the other side before those idiots back in Mystic Falls destroyed it." He explained as he helped her to her feet.

Becca pulled her eyes away from Kol and Lena to look at Klaus. She could tell his emotions were overwhelming him. He didn't know what to think or what to believe. "You've known about mother being back?" He asked his younger brother.

Kol looked conflicted, looking back at his sister before turning back to Klaus. "Not until recently when I found Lena."

Elijah was dumbfounded as he studied his youngest sister. She looked exactly the same as she did a thousand years ago. It was unbelievable. His eyes turned back to his brother. "What was on the note, Niklaus?"

"It's an invitation from our mother."

While Elijah got Lena settled in one of the rooms, Becca went upstairs with Klaus. She could tell he needed a moment to process this. He went out onto the balcony by himself, staring off at the note in his hand. Becca sat on the bed, waiting for him to cool down enough to talk to her. After a few moments, he decided to come back in. "This could be a trap, Klaus. It seems pretty convenient her showing up the same time your mother sends that invitation." Becca said over, wondering where his mind was.

Klaus leaned against the back of a chair. "We have enough enemies here. And now the war for our home is to be fought against my own family."

Becca wasn't a sympathetic toward his family. His mother was the one who'd tried to kill Klaus and his siblings time and time again. She was the one who marked her daughter for death. "Don't forget your mother is the reason our daughter is gone, Klaus. I will gladly add to the body count if it comes to that." She said seriously.

Klaus gave her a once over as he took in how serious she was. She wanted to be strong enough for this. He wanted to help her get there. He knew she could be just as ruthless as he was if she let herself be. She could be the queen she was meant to be.

"You'll do no such thing." Elijah said as he entered the room. "Esther's a master in the art of possession. We know whose body she currently inhabits. We must decipher her intentions before she finds another host."

"Well her last invitation was an assassination attempt on all her children. I think we can assume her intentions are decidedly foul." Klaus said, his eyes flickering from his brother to Becca.

Elijah glanced at his watch, trying to figure out how much time they had left. "Well then, we have the afternoon to prepare for the worst."

Elijah didn't spare them another glance before leaving the room. He'd been in a mood since Hayley and Becca were turned. Klaus had noticed it when Elijah asked him to help Hayley adjust. It was the least he could do because he knew Elijah was doing the same with Becca.

Klaus glanced out the doorway Elijah had left through for a moment before turning to Becca. "Love, I have a task for you while Elijah and I are preparing for dinner tonight."

Becca looked up surprised. Klaus had never thought to involve her in any of his plots, he liked to keep her out of them. Whether she liked it or not, she thought bitterly to herself. "What did you have in mind?" She asked, all ears now as she sat up.

He took her hand in his and pulled her to her feet. "I would like you to be a good little hostess and chat up my little sister. See if she knows anything that is of use to us tonight."

Becca was hesitant to talk to Lena. She wasn't the best liar and she wasn't sure how well her questioning the witch was going to go. Still, she wanted to help Klaus. "You don't trust her intentions being here are good?" She asked curiously.

Klaus glanced out into the hall before turning back to her. "My sister died about a thousand years ago. The only thing I know is my mother brought her back. If I was her, I'd be eternally grateful to her and do whatever she asked of me."

Becca could understand that. Klaus didn't trust a lot of people, not even his siblings at times. There had even been times he didn't trust her. It made sense he wouldn't trust this newfound sister. "Are you going to be alright with this dinner? I can stay here tonight." She said, squeezing his hand in hers.

He raised her hands up and pressed his lips against her knuckles. He appreciated the gestor. He knew being around the woman who put a target on their daughter's back was the last thing she wanted to do. "Elijah and I will be fine, love. Don't worry about us." He said, cupping her face as he stroked her cheek.

She didn't look convinced, but she didn't question him. She simply nodded and kissed his hand. "I'm always going to worry, Klaus."

He smiled sadly as he watched her. He nodded as he let her go. With one last look over her shoulder, she turned and left the room.

Becca headed down the hall and down to the room they'd put Lena in. The door was open and she could see the witch unpacking her things. Knocking on the door, she leaned against the frame. Lena turned her head at the noise. "Hey. It's Becca, right?" She asked.

Becca nodded and pushed off the door frame. "Yeah, I'm Becca. We met before. I suppose now it makes sense why you were standing outside. Kol knew it was you then?"

She was a little upset that Kol had lied to her again. Kol had obviously known who Lena was when they saw her the other day. It made her wonder what else he was hiding from them.

Lena knew the story she was supposed to stick to, but Becca having seen her before threw a wrench in that plan. She'd have to think quick on her feet to cover their mistake. "He was thrown off when he saw me that day. He didn't want to raise alarm before he knew what was really going on." She explained as she folded another shirt.

Becca wasn't sure if she could believe her. Kol liked to do things that benefited him. If he waited to reveal this girl to their family, it was because it worked in his favor somehow. She just didn't see what Kol's angle could be this time. "Of course he didn't. How are you settling in? Do you like your room?" She asked, changing the subject as she looked around.

Lena didn't bring much with her. She wasn't sure if Elijah and Klaus would throw her out or accept her so she didn't want to bring a lot. They let her stay though, as Kol said they would. "It's a nice room. Though I don't have much to compare it to. My last room was a maid's quater and before that I shared a room with Rebekah in our home as children." Lena said as she took a quick scan of the room.

Becca was surprised to hear that. Klaus had always made it seem like they stayed in the grandest of homes over the years. They masquaraded themselves as lords. It was surprising to hear one of them had been the help. "You were a maid?" She asked curiously.

The witch made a face as she remembered her past. "For a brief time, yes. I was one of Rebekah's ladies. Not my favorite time."

Becca watched as she tried to brush off the memories. She didn't want to remember whatever had happened before. Obviously that was a sore subject for her. "Where have you been staying since coming back? With your mother, I assume." She said as she looked at the objects on her dresser.

Lena watched her suspiciously, wondering where she was going with these questions. "Yes. I stayed with my mother. She told me about you. Though she refered to you as my brother's favorite pet."

The hybrid tensed at the words leaving her mouth. "I'm no one's pet."

Lena studied her for a moment. She knew this was Klaus's way of getting information from her. He was sending this girl to do his dirty work for him. "Aren't you? Do you honestly believe Niklaus loves you? He's incapable of loving anyone. It's not in his nature. He will leave you behind when it benefits him. Trust me, he's done it before." She said bitterly, her eyes shifting away from the hybrid.

Becca looked back surprised. Kol had mentioned they parted way before, but he hadn't gone into detail about it. She seemed to be hitting every sore subject with this girl. "Klaus is a lot of things, but heartless is not one of them. I don't know what happened in the past, but he must have had his reasons." She said, crossing her arms over her chest.

She knew the words coming out of the witch's mouth was her mother talking. She'd been on the other side all this time with no one but her mother. Her hatred for the original siblings had to have rubbed off on her. Whatever had happened between them a thousand years ago was a factor as well.

Lena didn't say anymore else as she finished unpacking. Becca took that as her que to leave and made her way towards the door. She paused in the doorway, looking over her shoulder. "Lena, I don't know what your mother has filled your head with. She hates what your siblings are, but they're not so bad once you get to know them. Klaus can be a monster, I know that. He's done a lot of bad things, but most of the time it's for a good reason. Don't let your mother's views keep you from loving them." She said, hoping the witch would listen to her.

Lena glared at the shirt in her hands, not saying anything. She didn't want to believe this girl. Her mother had been talking in her ear for a thousand years. She was the one to save her from oblivion when the other side crumbled. She owed her her life. That was what she knew for a fact. That was what she was going to keep believing.

Becca sighed sadly, shaking her head as she left the room. At least she tried.
