Chapter Thirty Eight

"Ugh!" Katherine let out a frustrated sighed as she put down her spoon with a loud crack. The three girls had been eating ice cream in the kitchen, with Davina and Rebekah doing a poor attend to keep Katherine distracted and ignorant during the last months of her pregnancy and keep Davina from having her panic attacks.

Rebekah looked up from her vanilla ice cream-blood combination. "What's with you?"

"I don't know," she said exasperated. "For the past few weeks I just felt weird, like I'm missing something. Like today I went into the new nursery and I thought it was pink instead of purple and I saw one of everything instead of two. Which is stupid of me because I have an excellent memory."

"You're so modest," Rebekah tried to keep from twitching. She didn't know why the compulsion wasn't taking complete effect, maybe because the baby was part witch, but she did know that Katherine wasn't completely satisfied with the theory that there was only one baby.

"You've been compelled." Davina's voice was gentle. "By Klaus, that's why you're confused."

Rebekah whipped her head. "Davina!"

"She needs to know, Rebekah," Davina said her voice becoming hard. "However, painful it might be, she can't keep leaving in oblivion forever. She deserves to know."

"What do you mean that Klaus compelled me?" she said her voice becoming hard as she glared at Davina. "What exactly did Klaus compel me to forget, Rebekah?"

Katherine stormed into Elijah's office. Her fury growing with every step she took, how dare he? How dare he and Klaus try to control her life? She opened the door without bothering to knock. Elijah had been quietly flipping through one of his mother's spell book. He smiled when he saw her, but before he could even greet her, Katherine slap him hard across the face. "How could you?" she snarled.

Elijah, slightly confused rubbed his injured cheek. "Katerina, what on earth are you talking about?"

The tears were threatening to spill, but she refused to let them go down her face. "How could you?" she repeated again, she had been ready to slap him again, when Elijah grabbed her firmly by the wrist.

"Katerina, I think you at least owe me an explanation!" Elijah growled.

"Don't get mad at me!" Katherine fumed. "When you were the one that just stood back and let Klaus compel me!"

"You weren't supposed to find out this way," Elijah said weakly, he attempted to reach for her hand, but Katherine fiercely pulled back. "Katerina, please let me explain. I didn't agree at first, but then I thought it would be best. Klaus was trying to help you-"

She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at him in disbelief. "Help me? How on earth is Klaus trying to help me?" she demanded, her voice shaking. "By making me forget that I was carrying twins? By making me forget that my sister who I thought died 500 years ago is on her plan for vengeance? How was that supposed to help me, Elijah? Help me understand, because I certainly don't."

Elijah whispered. "We were trying to help you, Katherine. You weren't yourself, you were unstable, we thought you would prefer this-"

Katherine shook her head as she turned around. "It wasn't your call to make."

"Katerina?"

Katherine turned around, she had been rummaging a hand through her curls trying to remember at least half of what Davina had told her, but she came out completely blank. She didn't remember the twins or the body her sister occupied. She turned around and faced Klaus. "Well, you're the least person I want to see right now, but since you're apparently the answer to all my prayers I'll give you five seconds to explain."

Klaus grew irritated. Why did Katherine have to be so difficult? "I did you a favor, Katerina." Klaus said tightly. "You don't remember, but you were acting completely irrational. Taking away your memories was to take away your suffering as well as preventing you from doing something stupid to harm yourself or the baby."

"Put them back, now Klaus!" Katherine growled. "Oh, I swear I will make Elijah's slap seem like a love tap."

"Is that a threat, love?"

"No, that's a promise."

Klaus hesitated and warned. "You're not going to like it, love."

"I'll risk it," She said firmly. "Klaus I need to know, I deserve to know." Klaus didn't look convinced. "Please."

Klaus murmured something under his breath before he raised his gaze and looked into Katherine's eyes. "Remember."

In an instant everything came flooding back to her. Learning that she was expecting twins, Belle, Milena, blood, lots and lots of blood, a dead Belle, Elijah telling her that she had lost one of the twins, her destroying the nursery. Katherine's eyes welled up with tears.

"I told you, you weren't going to like it." Klaus warned.

"I know." Her lips wobbled, but she didn't cry. "I just didn't think it was going to be this bad."

Later that evening, Katherine knocked on Elijah's open door and stood in the doorway. Elijah looked up from where he had been sitting at the edge of his bed. "Hi." She said softly.

"Hi," Elijah said as he stood up and walked towards her. "I understand why you're upset, you have every right to, but Katerina we didn't mean to do you a disfavor. We wanted to help you and unfortunately, this is the only way we thought possible."

After a pause, Katherine placed her hand against his cheek. "I know Elijah," she sighed. "I remember everything. Klaus uncompelled me."

"How do you feel?"

Katherine shrugged. "Well, I'm all cried out if that's what you're asking. But I'm not going to stop until I haunt Milena down," she noticed that Elijah wanted to speak, but she continued. "I won't rest until she's gone, Elijah. Because we both know that neither I nor my daughter will be safe as long as she's alive."

"So, will you help us?" Elijah folded his hands as he looked across from him to Monique and Davina. Monique looked at him suspiciously while, Davina stared on blankly.

"We are almost positive that Celeste has the Traveler's knife, Milena if she's anything like Katherine wouldn't leave it lying down." Stefan explained.

"Our theory, little witches," Klaus smirked. "Is that you two have enough power to take care of Celeste while we find the traveler's knife. Kill two birds with one stone, you could say."

Monique raised her chin. "What's in it for us?"

"I think not killing you right now is more than enough."

"Klaus," Elijah scolded as he turned back to them. "In exchanged of Celeste's murder, you will regain your last Harvest girl, we will forever be in your gratitude, and you will be free to practice magic in the quarter."
