A/N: Sorry for the late update, Oranfly was swamped with work this week so her chapter is a bit late.
Kensi Deeks was exhausted and as cranky as she was over the lack of sleep, there was really no one to blame. Her husband of a few months had been nothing but a saint, helping out more with the kids and doing most of the chores around the house, but between the constant backaches and the mutant ninja assassin practicing kung fu in utero for most of the day it was a wonder if she slept for more than an hour at a time. It made her long for another honeymoon as she daydreamed about the one they had gone on just a few days after the wedding. It had only been a week, but a week in Hawaii away from work and children was a much needed respite. They spent most of their evenings out at various restaurants and walking beaches, only to return for long nights of making love and enjoying the opportunities of not getting caught. They would both be up earlier in the day (mutant ninja assassin woke her up with tiny flutters at that time along with a rumbling and hungry stomach) and have an early and large breakfast. Afterward they would wander down to the beach where Deeks would surf for a few hours and Kensi would nap under an umbrella. It had been a relaxing and easy week, but after a few days they both missed the three kids they were in the process of adopting.
Now at eight months pregnant, she was beginning to understand Sam's jokes about them taking a babymoon before she popped. The pull of the Hawaiian waves crashing against the shore and the piles of fresh fruit called to her from her desk at OSP, but she knew it couldn't happen.
"I come bearing grapes!" Her husband's voice broke her reverie as the sounds of him approaching her desk alerted her further to his presence. Her outlook on the day brightened considerably at the prospect of fruit. Deeks had teased her for no end when she gave up her normal sweets and sugars for a major craving for all things in the fruit family.
"My hero," Kensi grinned when he was close enough for her to snatch up the bag of grapes from him and began inhaling them.
"Good thing I already washed those…" Deeks cringed as she took in whole handfuls.
"TankuDee," she got out with grapes still stuffed into her mouth.
Deeks watched her for a moment and wondered about the simple things that now made his wife happy. He supposed they were also simple before but their constant dance around each other seemed to complicate their lives and it was their entire fault. Thank God that part was over with and they were onto living their lives together. Looking back he can admit that he enjoyed their push and pull for a while because it shaped them and in the end brought them closer, but he wouldn't trade their current status for anything in the world.
"Kensi you should really try breathing between bites - " Sam laughed as he reached his desk but was interrupted when he had to duck from a flying stapler coming from Kensi's direction. "Hey!" He was once again cut off when a roll of tape was thrown at him. "I'll be in the gym…"
"I think I'm following right after you," Callen side stepped his desk completely, deeming it too close to the moody woman he had grown to call his sister.
Kensi grinned to herself as she continued popping grapes into her mouth.
"Where did you wanna go to lunch?" Deeks asked, smiling happily at his wife who was now reclined in her desk chair so the swell of her stomach could just barely be seen above the desk surface.
"Lunch will have to wait for you, Mr. Deeks," Hetty interrupted. "Eric and Nell have a lead for you and Sam to follow."
Deeks gave Hetty a pouting face before resigning himself to the task given.
"Give the kids a hug for me," Deeks said and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before he went off to the gym to find Sam.
Kensi nodded before stashing the few remaining grapes in her desk drawer and getting up to head toward the daycare. They were meant to go out for a family lunch since Will had the day off for teachers meetings and she knew the kids would be sad that Deeks couldn't make it, but they also understood. She grabbed her light jacket and began the waddle over to the daycare center to pick up the kids. She entered the five digit code to get into the center and it took the kids all of five seconds to notice her.
"Mommy!"
"Mom!"
A chorus of her new title sounded and her legs were wrapped in vice like mini-arms in greeting.
"Where's dad?" Will asked, finally pulling away.
"He had to go out with uncle Sam for work, so it's just us today," Kensi said trying to keep it light and happy for them. "So where do you wanna go?"
"The toy place!" Elijah shouted in excitement.
Kensi knew exactly the place he meant and mentally cringed. The food was subpar, but the restaurant was filled with games and toys that the kids could play with, complete with a caracole out front that the kids loved.
"Alright, the toy place it is," Kensi said and the kids cheered. If it made them happy, that was all that mattered to her. They left with the kids running circles around her legs and chattering and Kensi couldn't help but feel content.
Lunch went pretty smoothly and the kids ran themselves ragged around the restaurant when they weren't eating their grilled cheese or hot dogs. When they had finished Kensi took them out to the caracole and they each found their favorite animal to ride and Kensi helped Isla onto her choice of a unicorn. She was now old enough to hold herself up, but Kensi still paused before stepping off the ride and finding a good spot to watch them from. As the ride started they would wave as soon as she came into view, trying to draw her attention, which was easy enough as she laughed at their antics. When they disappeared around the corner once again, her cell phone rang and the caller ID read "Hetty".
"Blye," she answered curtly, but then grinned when the kids came into view again.
"Ms. Blye, Mr. Deeks was injured while out on that lead," Hetty's voice was solemn and Kensi felt her heart drop into her stomach while her knees wobbled dangerously.
"Is he… is he okay?" She couldn't bring herself to say any other word and she quickly found a spot on a nearby bench to sit down on before she crumbled to the ground.
"Sam checked in just a moment before I called you and he said that he was swearing up a storm and going to be alright," Hetty's said reassuringly. "My understanding is that it was a through and through bullet to the arm. He's at St. Anna's being stitched up now."
"I've gotta go to him," Kensi's voice wavered from the overwhelming emotion building up. Now it was relief warring with ebbing worry. He was going to live, but a bullet was a bullet and that means he was far too close to getting bullets elsewhere.
"I know dear," Hetty said. "The hospital is already expecting you."
"Thank you, Hetty," Kensi said, still trying to keep the tears at bay. She hung up the phone and looked up just in time to see Elijah sprinting toward her while Will helped his little sister down from her animal.
"Mommy, is everything okay?" Elijah asked, climbing into Kensi's lap.
"Daddy got hurt today so we're going to go visit him in the hospital real quick," Kensi forced her voice to remain steady, but it was hard.
"Dad's been hurt?" Will asked as he and Isla caught up with them.
"Yeah, but he's gonna be okay," Kensi assured them.
"Can we bring him flowers?" Isla asked, her eyes filled with worry.
"Of course we can," Kensi smiled. "I think he'd like that. You can even pick them out."
Kensi herded them toward her SRX and got them settled in before hitting the road. If she was lucky and traffic wasn't so bad, they could be there in twenty minutes.
