BRUCE
It didn't stop when it needed to. The restless antics of random street kids burned at the back of his head like a burner on low, slowly heating up the water, slowly making it's way to boil.
"Dr. Banner?" Oath's voice made him jump.
"Ju-Oath. Good. I'm glad you're here."
"Are you thinking about those signs again? They're stupid. Everyone in the city knows it." Oath said, her face became serious when she mentioned the signs.
"No. I was just worried about Tasha. She hasn't been out of her apartment all day. Except to leave Clint's apartment to go to her own."
"She's probably just got a bug. It'll go away soon, I'm sure."
"Well, all the same, I'd like to check her over. Why don't you bring her up?"
"I'll ask, but I don't know how willing she'll be to come." Oath nodded, her black curls bouncing around her face. "I'll be back soon." And with that she trotted off to the elevator and Bruce was left alone once again. He felt the cool air coming from the window across the room and sighed. Oath was right. He shouldn't worry about the signs. No one believed them.
"Sir. The elevator." The doors opened and Tony wheeled out with a look of fury painted across his face. Here we go... it probably has to do with his last medical "report card".
"Banner! I've come to give you a warning."
"Oh?"
"If I ever, EVER, see you touch my daughter-"
"Ummm?"
"Don't interrupt me!" Tony's tone was beginning to ruffle Bruce's feathers. This man was a man who obviously got whatever he wanted. Besides that, he was speaking to Bruce as though he were some sort of monster. "I've transferred her medical care to someone far more capable than you."
"I hate to break it to you, Tony, but I'm the-"
"How dare you think I wouldn't notice these!" Tony held up the crumpled paper of Oath, missing.
"What?!" Bruce stared at it in shock. "Where'd you get that?"
"Of a street sign, giant, green, dumbass."
"But... you saw Oath only a couple nights ago-"
"I don't give a shit. You're a hazard, and I've about had enough of your crap."
"I'm a what?" Bruce could feel his voice take a turn to a darker tone. A hazard. That's what they said too.
"A hazard! And I'm not letting you near my daughter or anyone else in this tower!"
"A HAZARD?"
"Yes. That's what I said. Of course, I'll let you stay, because we all have issues, but isolation is the best thing for a person whose issues are the worst."
"ISSUES!?" No. Tony's my friend. Stop. Something is wrong with him. Stop... please...plea-
"Stop acting so surprised. You knew all alone that he's only out to kill us all. Which is exactly why Aspen has a new provider-"
"KILL?" STOP! NO! But it was too late. He took over completely and turned around with a roar of rage. "HULK NO KILL!" Tony's look of horror was enough to make Bruce yearn to run, but the Hulk was just getting started. Furious, he raised his hands and smashed the floor beneath him.
Glass shattered, the lab shook, medical instruments, microscopes, and all sorts of other things came crashing off the counters. Lamps fell over, the cupboards rattled, and Hulk stood tall above Tony, who looked horrified and almost pleased at the same time as he slowly wheeled towards the elevator. Just as the JARVIS announced a new arrival the Hulk smashed the button so Tony couldn't go anywhere.
"Ummm... Bruce... you can come back now..." Tony whispered. But Bruce wasn't able to listen anymore. The Hulk was too busy completely destroying his own lab in a fit of anger. Cupboards were thrown across the room, lamps were thrown out the window, tables were crushed, and anything glass was totally smashed.
Suddenly he heard the doors of the elevator open. He roared in anger, and spun around to be almost eye to eye with Agent Oath.
OATH
Juliette hummed a little tune as she stepped into the elevator and wondered where she had heard it before. That's right. The baby shower. When you were dancing with Dr. Banner. She thought.
"Floor twenty-one, please." The elevator started moving slowly down to the floor she requested, Natasha's apartment.
As it did, she thought about dancing, and even swayed her hips to the song that was continuously playing in her head. Oh that was so fun... and romantic. The last word struck her as strange. Dr. Banner was her SO. He wasn't too much older than her, but he seemed older. Not in looks, but in attitude. He was so serious, all the time. Dancing with him was the first time she'd ever seen him so excited.
"Floor twenty-one, Agent Oath. Please wait for Agent Romanoff to let you in." There was a click and the door opened. "Agent Romanoff is in her room." Juliette tiptoed into Tasha's room and found her strewn across the bed, covered in piles of blankets.
"Hello. How are you feeling?"
"Better. So much better than this morning, but still pretty bad."
"Well, Dr. Banner was wondering if you'd like to come up to have a check up."
"No... I'm feeling better. I should be alright. Tell him that if it gets worse I'll be up to see him."
"Just let me check your temperature quick. Have you gotten anything down?"
"Yes... I had some water and a few crackers, but I think I'm feeling alright now. I think I'm ready for some more food." Juliette waved the thermometer across Tasha's forehead and her temperature came out normal.
"You're alright. You don't have a fever."
"Good."
"Just get some rest, okay?"
"Don't have to tell me twice."
Oath hurried back to the elevator and pressed the "up" button.
"Just one moment." JARVIS said. Someone must have used the elevator right after me. Juliette waited for what was only a couple of seconds and the doors opened. She stepped in quickly and said, "The lab please."
The elevator started moving and Juliette hummed a tune again. She'd report back to Bruce, and then she'd finish filling out the reports for Maggie and Maddie's medical information. Suddenly she heard a crash just as she was reaching the lab's floor. What's going on? That's a lot of noise.
Worry filled her heart as the doors slowly opened. She stepped out quickly to survey a mess- a horrifying dump of a lab. It was destroyed. Crushed. Absolutely demolished. Tony Stark was in his wheelchair at the entrance of the elevator, and right in the middle of the mess was the tall, bulky form of the Incredible Hulk, who Juliette knew to be her SO, and friend, Bruce Banner. He spun around, his green eyes lit with fury, and let out a terrible roar. Juliette could feel terror growing within her. She wanted to run more than anything, but she couldn't let Bruce-the Hulk-run rampant.
"Dr. Banner?" She whispered, her voice shaking, "Please... settle down." Tony wheeled himself all the way back into the elevator, even though it wouldn't go anywhere, but Juliette stood her ground. "Dr. Banner. I know you're...I know you're there." The Hulk came closer, gripping some sort of iron pipe that Juliette assumed he got from one of the trashed walls. Oh God, Bruce, please come back. The closer he came the shakier her voice became. A lone tear rolled down her cheek as she stared him up in the eyes. He came closer, but his eyes were softer, as if he were recognizing something. "Bruce?" Juliette lifted her hand towards him, still trying to see past the monster.
"Hey, asshole!" Tony gasped. "Bye-bye!" The elevator doors suddenly shut. The Hulk roared in fury. Juliette screamed,
"NO! BRUCE!" She didn't even have time to step out of the way. She collapsed to her knees. "STOP!" All movement ceased. She slowly lifted her head to see Bruce slowly changing back to himself. He was on his hands and knees and was gasping for breath. His eyes were filled with terror as he looked over at her.
"Juliette..." He shook his head and collapsed onto his back, onto the glass on the floor. Juliette could see the blood seeping from his newly made cuts. His shirt was no longer existent, his pants were torn and in shreds.
"Dr. Ba... Bruce..." Juliette tried not to let the tears escape, but it was no use. She couldn't hold them back, and she choked and they began to flow. Bruce sat up, and keeping his distance, he whispered with sorrow in his gaze,
"I'm so... so... so sorry. I-" Juliette shook her head, but couldn't speak she was crying so hard. "I didn't mean—I was fighting him. I was trying to get control... I couldn't. He was too strong." Juliette wiped away her tears.
"S-sorry." She whispered. "I'm still... I'm still sh-shaking." Bruce crawled over towards her but when he came close she jerked away from him. She instantly regretted the movement. He looked horrified, and began to draw back. "No, wait." She held out her hand, which was shaking tremendously, and he took it and steadied it. Then she pulled herself into his embrace. He cradled her, and for some reason it calmed her nerves, even though originally he had been the cause of exciting them.
"I'm so sorry." He said again, but this time his voice was thick, as if he himself was struggling to hold back tears.
"It's alright. I'm fine. N-no one was h-hurt." There was a pause and then he whispered.
"I'm hurt."
"Oh G-god, Bruce..." Juliette wrapped her arms around him and held him tight. She felt a tear hit her neck. The sat there, shaking in the rubble of what was once their lab, both of them weeping. Finally, Bruce pulled away.
"What happened?" Juliette asked.
"Tony. He came in. He's delusion. He kept yelling about how all the papers were true, the ones about me being a killer. He told me he was transferring Aspen to a new doctor. He said I was a hazard, and had the worst issues."
"That asshole."
"He's delusional, that's all."
"I'm gonna cut his head off." Juliette hissed. Bruce laughed shakily.
"Scratch that. He needs to be taken care of. He's having some problems. I think he needs medication. But we need a specialist for this case."
"Alright. Sign the bastard up. I'll find him and sedate him." Juliette stood, and Bruce followed. She straightened her shirt and Bruce sighed.
"I'll go change and call Dr. Gregory."
"Alright. I'm gonna find Tony." Juliette headed towards the elevator.
"Wait! Juliette! Don't you need the sedatives?" Bruce asked. Juliette held up her fist.
"I'm thinking that this'll work pretty well." Bruce grinned, and followed her into the elevator.
