Angel of Death
Disclaimer: I do not own Assassination Classroom
Chapter 37
"Well, I'll go ahead and announce the results" Korosensei said as some students looked nervous. "Starting with English, Class E's top scorer and number one in your grade was... Rio Nakamura!"
"A perfect score" Korosensei said as he handed her her results. "You weren't always that motivated, though, so I was worried"
"Ufufu" She laughed as she took the results. "It's all because of that ten billion yen reward, so don't forget this means one tentacle, mkay?"
"Nagisa also worked hard, but you still need to fix that habit of spelling things wrong where it really counts"
"Yeah" Nagisa said as he was ranked sixth.
"Right behind Rio though is Nagataka in second place" Korosensei said before he placed a flag that said reserved for destruction. "Well, then, seeing as you took the top spot in one subject, you can destroy one tentacle. In addition, you also have the five-subject showdown with class A, we'll see if you can congratulate yourselves after all the results have been handed out. Before we move on, Class A's Tomoya Seo scored fourth"
"Now moving on to Japanese Lit...Class E's top scorer was...Yukiko Kanzaki!" Korosensei said. "But the one who took first place was class A's Gakushu Asano, followed by Yukiko in second"
"Man, Gakushu is really racking up the points" Hiroto said. "If he kept his score in the other subjects, we won't stand a chance"
"Continuing on, next is...Social Studies! Class E's top scorer was Yuma Isogai with ninety-seven points and the top in your grade was...CONGRATULATIONS! You took the top spot!"
"YES!" Yuma cheered standing up.
"Meanwhile in Class A Gakushu scored ninety-five points being ranked third" Korosensei looked over to the wheelchair student for a minute. "You came close with ninety-six points Nagataka, better luck next time"
"We're winning!" Yuzuki said.
"Next is Science" Korosensei read. "Class E's top scorer in science was Manami Okuda! And..."
Meanwhile in Class A, the speakers went off. "Gakushu Asano of 3-A, the board chairman would like to see you. Please come to the chairman's office at once"
Without saying a word, Gakushu stood up and silently left the class.
"Well ain't this just fine and dandy for you, Natsuhiko" Tomoya said. "Seeing as you fulfilled your goal and all"
"The overall top scorer in science was... Excellent job!" Korosensei said. "You were also number one in your grade!" He congratulated the student as the class cheered for her.
"We pretty much won this, and soon we will take our reward" Kimura said smiling.
"I can't wait~" Hinano agreed.
"Losing to class E in that showdown...is there anything more humiliating than that?"
"Gakushu is third, Natsuhiko is fourth and Nagataka is second...again..." Koki said. "But hey, we're beating them!"
Natushiko pushed up his glasses. "Well, in a way I certainly fulfilled my objective" He said to Tomoya and Teppei. "I wanted revenge against the one who stole my spot from me, but...he just went and brought about his own downfall. I don't even need to compete with someone that pathetic...however, I'm guessing Gakushu also wants revenge for the top spot too"
"Now, it's time for Math" Korosensei said. "The top scorer in Class E is...Nagataka! The top in your grade however was..."
Korosensei dragged on the last of the five main subjects. Well the tension he was creating was working...
"Congratulations!" Korosensei's face turned orange with a red ring. "You scored the top spot for Math!"
"Way to go Nagataka!" Sugino said.
"In the five main subjects, we are winning four to one!" Yuzuki smiled.
"Now there is just the composite score right?" Chiba asked.
"Yep, if one of us gets the composite score then we can another tentacle to shoot off!" Hinano cheerfully said.
"I'm sorry" Yukiko apologized. "I failed to get first in Japanese Lit, I let everyone down"
"No you didn't" Sugino said. "You did better than the rest of us!"
"He's right" Nagataka nodded. "You did the best you could, if anything it's us that failed you"
Nagisa looked to Karma's seat and noticed that he was gone, but decided not to say a word seeing as their teacher already left as well.
Karma leaned against a tree as his paper was practically crushed. He went down to tenth in math and scored thirteen in his composite.
"Class A is just as strong as you'd expect and they were placed very high just under Nagataka in first in the composite scores surprisingly, Kotaro and Megu also scored very well being tied for seventh" Korosensei said before mumbling something unintelligible but Karma could hear the name Nagataka in those mumblings. "Anyway, it's a logical outcome. Everyone in Class A worked just as hard as we did. The tests themselves were also far more difficult, there's no way a lazybones would be able to understand them and keep pace"
"Is there something you want to say to me?" Karma asked as Korosensei appeared behind his shoulder.
"How embarrassing~" Korosensei teased. "You must have been thinking 'I'm so cool, it'll be an easy victory for me' or something like that right?"
Karma's face went as red as his hair before he walked away a bit faster than normal.
Gakushu found himself in the chairman's office. "Congratulations on maintaining your number one rank all-around is what I'd like to say, but for some reason, you made a bet with Class E and that ended up not being the case and then you lost said wager and are now number two" Gakuho said to his son. "Seeing as your bet has become common knowledge throughout the school...you won't be able to refuse whatever Class E requests so easily. What now? Shall I have the school protect you?"
"No thank you" His son replied.
"As I recall...you said you would 'put a collar on me and keep me as a pet', and other such things" The chairman said. "Declaring your intent to uncover a secret of mine which doesn't even exist and going so far to drop your rank as well..."
Gakuho leaned in close near his son. "What unmitigated gall from a neophyte who can't even win a bet against those his own age"
This served to infuriate his son, as he had a very, very pissed off look.
"There are four who earned the right to destroy my tentacles...Rio, Yuma, Manami, Nagataka" Korosensei said patting Karma's head after catching up. "This time around, you weren't able to be of use in the assassination or the class' wager"
"Do you understand now? Those who can't do what they should when the need calls for it will come to have no presence in this assassination classroom" Korosensei said as he thought he heard Yuzuki say Title Drop or something. "You, who neglect to hone your blade, are not an assassin. You are just a child who proudly carried a rusted blade"
"Tch" Karma smacked the tentacle away as Karasuma walked over as Karma left.
"Oi, should you really think you should've said all that?"
"Don't worry" Korosensei told the agent. "That feeling of frustration is the quickest path to recovery. He has a wealth of talent, however those blessed with such skill are prone to being inexperienced. It's dangerous for them to grow up without experiencing true competition, because they'll keep winning, even without taking the matter seriously"
"For those with a high level of aptitude...the sooner they know the frustration of defeat, the greater their growth will be" He continued. "Tests offer a perfect opportunity to teach them the meaning of both strength and competition"
"Take in as many successes and setbacks as possible now, students!" Korosensei thought to himself. "What it means to win, what it means to lose, and the meaning of strength in the modern day!"
"...I...wasn't able to notice it until it was too late...that's why it's so important"
"But what if, as you said before, those blessed with skill already have that experience?" Karasuma asked.
Korosensei turned around to face Karasuma. "Then they will be fine as they have exprienced such frustration before" He said. "So, how's the news? Do you wish me to get Nagataka now or after class?"
"After class would be fine..."
Korosensei entered the classroom. "Now then, you all had excellent results. There were five subjects plus the composite score for six chances, and you took the top spot in four of them" Korosensei smiled. "Plus the composite score, congratulations Nagataka"
Korosensei then sobbed silently to himself as the class talked among themselves. "Losing five tentacles is dangerous, good thing it won't get any worse than that"
"Erosensei, since I scored first in Math and got the composite, can I give one of my second shots to someone else?" Nagataka asked.
"...I shall allow it this once" Korosensei said as Nagataka turned to look at Yukiko. "Since you were close to being number one Japanese, you can have my second free shot"
Yukiko smiled. "Thanks Nagataka"
"Oi, hold up there, octopus" Ryoma said getting the octopus' attention. "There weren't just four people that got the first spot in five different subjects"
"There were, though, Ryoma" Korosensei said. "When you combine Math, English, Japanese Lit, Social Studies, Science..."
"Hah? You missed one dumbass" Ryoma said as he showed four different papers for Home Economics where Ryoma, Yoshida, Takuya and Kirara scored first together. "If we're talking about the five subjects, they're Japanese Lit, English, Social Studies, Science and Home Ec"
"H-HOME ECONOMICS!" Korosensei thought as he saw their test results. "Hold on a second! Home economics is a secondary test subject, you know! How could you four only take something like this seriously enough to get a perfect score!"
"Nobody said which five subjects we were talking about" Ryoma said.
"Kukuku" Kirara chuckled evilly. "The whole class was fine with the idea~"
"That's true Erosensei, you only said get first in five subjects" Nagataka smirked before looking at Karma. "Right?"
Karma looked at Korosensei with a smirk. "Isn't it a bit rude to say home economics is secondary Korosensei?" He asked. "It's said to be the greatest among the five subjects, you know"
The the class all joined in. "Yeah, that's right, sensei! You better keep your promise!"
"Home Economics is the most important subject, and four people got the top spot in it!"
"That's a total of nine tentacles!"
"N-NINE TENTACLES!"
"So if more than one person came first in one of five subjects, then both will get a free shot of his tentacles, I assume it goes for ones who would could get first in more than one subject as well" Nagataka said to himself. "Hm, an example would be if I got first along with Rio in Enlgish we would have gotten two free shots each and the same would happen if I also gotten first place in something like Social Studies with Yumiko"
Ritsu looked over to Nagataka with a slightly raised eyebrow as he continued in a low whisper through out all the uproar. "I didn't know that..." He whispered. "I didn't know that was possible or could even happen..."
"Also, I talked it over with everyone, and we'd like to be allowed to use the 'loot' from our wager in this assassination, as well" Yuma said.
Suddenly the bell rang. "Okay, you can all leave" Korosensei said as they made plans to meet with Gakushu and use their first order and acquire the loot for the assassination.
As the all left Korosensei stopped the wheelchair student. "I wish to talk with you Nagataka-kun"
"What about the closing ceremony?"
"That won't be necessary" Korosensei told him. "I have a reason for you not showing up and besides, it's nothing special to hear really"
"So why did you stop me?" He asked the teacher. "It must be important"
"We need to talk...about a few things..."
Meanwhile the rest of the class meet up with the five virtuosos on the way to the closing ceremony. "Oho~" Ryoma said as he spotted Gakushu. "Finally shown your face, have you, oh great and powerful student council president?"
"I assume you have some business with me" The student council president said as he walked past. "However, with the closing ceremony preparations, I don't have time to waste on class E"
Ryoma however grabbed his shoulder. "Hey now, hold up there" He said. "Aren'tcha forgetting something?"
"Gakushu, we had a bet, you know" Yuma said. "Whichever class had more number one rankings among the five subjects could make one request of the other. Nagataka e-mailed you our request a little while ago, so I guess you have no problems with it?"
Gakushu looked around. "I don't see him here" He said.
"He has some prior business to attend to" Yuma said.
"I was somewhat looking forward to meeting him" Gakushu admitted.
"You'll meet him soon"
However back at the class Korosensei and Nagataka were having a little chat.
Korosensei held up the different test subjects of both the five main subject test papers and the secondary subject test papers. "I have noticed a trend in your paper, for example: Japanese Lit, second in our class, third in the year" Korosensei looked at Nagataka. "Just above Ren but bellow Yukiko"
"Usually you score perfect scores in class tests before, you came first in all subjects in the midterms"
"These exams were harder than those ones" He replied with a shrug. "Goes to show, that I'm not perfect"
Korosensei kept his gaze on Nagataka and sighed. "Here's a question for you, please answer it correctly if you know the answer" Korosensei said. "What is it that makes diseases caused by viruses and bacteria hard to treat? Please answer this truthfully and no fooling around"
Nagataka sighed as he stayed silently for a bit. "Influenza viruses and others continually change over time, usually by mutation. This change enables the virus to evade the immune system of its host so that people are susceptible to influenza virus infection throughout their lives. Bacteria mutate in the same way and can also become resistant if over-treated with antibiotics" He answered.
"How's that for an answer?"
"That is a correct answer and I would give a full mark for it" Korosensei said. "So why didn't you put it on your test?"
"Hm?" Nagataka hummed, however his eyes were a little wider than usual.
"As I said before you could have easly gotten full marks for the exams papers here, but aside from coming first in Math, you come in second, even in the secondaries" Korosensei gave him his papers back as Nagataka put them away slowly all the while avoiding Korosensei's gaze.
"You knew the answer yet to didn't write it down" The octopus then sat in a seat as Nagataka turned back to face him.
"You kind of but quite the amount of pressure on us y'know Erosensei"
"That is indeed true" He replied with a smile that seemingly never changed. "But you have all these knowledge for assassinating me and as I said before, scoring full marks on both my tests and during the midterms were you placed first out of everyone"
"..."
"Tell me, why?"
"..."
"...It's okay Nagataka, I am your teacher after all"
"...Well...I was sick before the exams started"
"You were indeed sick, I can attest to that but you are fine now" The teacher said. "You seem pretty healthy...might I ask something?"
"That depends" The student said as Korosensei tilted his head to the side a little. "I am not telling you about what it felt like in Kyoto"
"Damn" Korosensei sighed. "However that was not what I was going to ask, it's about your mind"
"My...mind?"
"You possess a gifted mind which allows you to learn and understand complex knowledge in a matter of minutes. It's quite rare to see in such a young man such as yourself" He said. "With this immense intelligence, you could have been in A class so why?"
"Why did you purposely get some answers wrong?" Korosensei asked.
"Eh Erosensei" Nagataka said as the world around the two of them became a dark void. "What are you trying to say?"
Korosensei's eyes widened as Nagataka's voice slowly started to distort. "Please ExpLaiN it To mE, the ReAsoniNg of YoUR loGic"
"I have already stated my reasoning earlier" Korosensei said calmly.
"YoU aRe a PERsistANT CrEaTuRe YoU kNoW rIgHt?" Nagataka asked his voice becoming more distorted as bloodlust formed around Korosensei from every angle to a point where they visually formed into sharp looking spears.
Korosensei looked around the void to see the bloodlust spears. "Ah, such bloodlust to this point!" He thought with an odd sort of pride. "This feeling though..."
"I'm certainly surprised" He said to his student. "But that's enough"
In a instant the void disappeared along with the 'bloodlust spears' and any track of bloodlust was gone. "Did he just release bloodlust?" Nagataka thought. "I thought I dropped it or was it his that forced it or forced me?"
"My reasons are my own but I can give you a hint" Nagataka said. "Social Links"
"Social Links?"
"The more they grow, the more attached I become"
'Ah, I see now" Korosensei nodded. "Bonds"
"If this test happened a few months ago, you would've gone for first place regardless of your classmates but...the old you and the new or current you are not the same anymore, you've changed and come so far in such little time. I'm proud, truly"
"Sure" Nagataka drawled out slowly.
"No, I really am" Erosensei said as he had his tentacles on his lap as he looked at his student. "You gave it up to give your fellow students their time to shine. To be honest, that was noble"
"Don't say it like I gave it up to them" He almost growled at the teacher. "They had all the skill in them and you knew it, I did nothing"
Korosensei didn't say anything but nodded.
"Besides there was nothing noble about it, it was the opposite really...I guess"
"I got to say, to do that with your mind and that ability to judge, that's really scary" He said. "I'm terrified at that ability of yours, I should be scared at what should come from you and the others during the assassination...yet I feel proud as a teacher...and with whatever knowledge you got have for assassination in their along with the other students, I'm sure you will all become such splendid adults"
"...Yeah" Nagataka nodded in a softer tone. "...Adults..."
Some time passed before Nagataka looked up at his teacher.
"...So what's the second thing then?" He asked the teacher. "You said there was multiple things"
"Yes, however that needs to be talked with Karasuma-sensei"
"...And he's at the closing ceremony while I'm here..."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"You didn't think this through did you?" He asked the teacher who just whistled innocently.
"A-At least I saved you from a boring ceremony right?"
"And what if they have special information I need to know?"
"You can ask a classmate AND Ritsu is there too"
"..." He just stared at Korosensei in somewhat disbelief. "What am I supposed to do then?"
"You can help me put together a guidebook" The teacher offered. "Also Irina-sensei is here"
The teacher pulled out a guide book and it was WAY longer than the Kyoto guidebook. "This is one for summer break" He told his student. "Here you go, also Ritsu is technically here if you want to talk to her"
"You know what, I'll read the book" Nagataka took the book from the teacher's tentacles. "Now shoo, I gotta practice the accordion so I can make good parody songs under the title of weird in front of my name"
Korosensei sweated dropped as his student lazily went through he pages. He went to the window in the hallway where Irina was.
"They sure pulled a fast one on you~" Irina said as the octopus looked down. "Especially that group of brats"
"Yes" Korosensei admitted.
"Their argument was on the verge of sophism, and, of course, I wish they had put in the effort in the true five subjects, but I'm truly happy" Korosensei said.
"The Home Economics exam isn't used in formal testing, so it isn't given as much importance" Korosensei continued. "As a result, there's a tendency for the teacher in charge to give whatever questions they'd like. For example, the main building home economics teacher Yasui Naomichi prefers olive oil while I prefer sesame oil. That being the case, class E's students, who have only taken my class are at an incredible disadvantage. If they do a bad job, scoring 100 points for first place would likely be even harder than doing the same in the five core subjects"
"They must have done a considerable amount of research on every possible question trend in order to pull that on me" He then looked over to the sunflowers that were near the window. "Thinking outside the box to find a loophole and having the concentration to strike at it... they are certainly suited to this assassination classroom"
The two were very silent for a time before Irina spoke up. "By the way, why are we stuck watching the classroom?" She asked.
"Well, Karasuma-sensei's going to the closing ceremony, so..."
"It's all because we've got an octopus here" Irina said.
"It's because we have a bitch here" Korosensei said at the very same time as her.
Class E were just waiting for the losing ceremony to begin, including Ritsu's proxy who showed up.
"It's rare to see you coming to a school-wide assembly, Karma" Yuma said noticing Karma.
"Y'see, if I skipped out now it'd be like I was running away, and I'm not too keen on that" He replied with a bored look.
"Karasuma-sensei!" Sosuke whispered. "The fake Ritsu is creeping me out so much that I can't concentrate on the assembly!"
"Just bear with it" Karasuma said. "This setup is necessary so no one finds out that Ritsu is a machine"
"That girl is my supervisor's daughter. She's tight-lipped and won't ask questions" He continued as the real Ritsu was on a phone in the fake Ritsu's pocket on her vest, watching the ceremony as well. "Her grades improved thanks to Ritsu's classes, so my supervisor's also in a good mood"
"Sitting next to me throughout my exams, so I couldn't concentrate and ended up getting the lowest score in the class" The artist sighed.
"He may have the lowest score in the class, but at the same time, he's in the middle-ground among those in his grade" Karasuma thought. "That's sure a long way from being near the bottom of the pack"
"Erm, even though it's summer break, don't neglect your studies...so you don't end up like class E" The principal said, however it had no effect since Class E had won the bet.
However unknown to them all, the board chairman was watching the closing ceremony on a laptop.
"As a result of those semester finals, the entire student body has become much more motivated in their studies. On top of that the humiliation associated with Class E and the danger of falling into it are now an even more compelling force" Gakuho thought to himself as a smirk grew. "My education policy is, without the doubt, functioning properly"
"Still, that is all precisely due to the End class remaining at the very bottom" Gakuho thought as he closed the laptop. "Over the summer break, we'll be measures to ensure it"
As the students returned, Korosensei gave each of them the summer break guidebook. "There's one copy for each of you" He said as he handed them out.
"Here we go with the over-the-top guidebook again" Hiroto sighed.
"It's like an accordion" Taiga said failing to get a proper hold of the book.
"Even this much is not enough!" Korosensei said as he continued passing them out. "The temptations of summer are far too many to name, after all!"
"Ah, I see" Nagataka said as he talked with Ritsu who showed him a few of the important parts of the ceremony. "So it was basically nothing, I'm glad I stayed behind"
Erosensei quickly got his students attention. "After this, we'll be heading into summer vacation, but you all still have the main event to look forward to"
"Yup" Rio said holding up the school pamphlet, the Kunugigaoka Junior High School's special summer course with the motto of 'boost your powers of concentration in the open airs' as it showed a wonderful resort. "This, which we snatched up thanks to our winning orders. It is a privilege given to the class with the highest grades. In other words, it would normally have been class A, but this time, the top fifty spots were almost entirely monopolized by classes A and E, with Nagataka in the lead"
Rio turned to Nagataka and gave him a thumbs up. Nagisa and Kaede looked at the pamphlet with practically stars in their eyes. "A three day, two night stay at an Okinawa Island Resort!"
However back in Class A, most of the class weren't happy at the virtuosos after what they were saying. "Well, they can just have that boring old domestic trip" Tomoya said. "I mean every year, half of us don't even participate anyway. Those who can't afford stuff like that spend their summer break studying"
"And guys like us who've got cash to burn end up traveling overseas!" Natushiko said.
"My family's taking a tour around Europe this year, hehehe!"
However Tomoya, Teppei, Natsuhiko and Ren froze as the rest of the students surrounded them.
"Don't think that everyone can just up and travel overseas, dammit!" A male student said.
"Er, that's..." Tomoya said before a female student continued.
"Going and losing such a crucial competition, how the hell are you virtuosos! What a joke!" She yelled.
Gakushu was the only one not been hassled as he sat alone. "Would you kindly be silent?" He asked in a poison coated tone. "Beaten dogs should just keep their mouths closed. Sit down until the next time I pull on your leash"
"I will get even with them for this, mark my words" He thought. "Before I deal with dad, you lot in Class E will be my second target, but my first target will be you Nagataka!"
Nagataka looked up as he sneezed. "Was someone thinking about me?" He asked. "Why are they asking for a death wish?"
"As you requested, the tentacle destruction you have earned the right to carry out will not take place in this classroom" Korosensei said. "Rather, it will take place during our stay on this outlying island"
"Though nine tentacles is a large handicap, it isn't quite satisfactory enough. You may also use the island itself, which is surrounded on all sides by water, sensei's weakness. Truth be told, you have all become formidable students" He said as he scratched his head. "I handed out report cards for your parents to see some time ago. These are report cards for all of you, as assassins, from me, your target"
Korosensei looked up to see Nagataka looking down and slightly to the side. "Parents, huh"
"N-Not that all of you have parents! EH! I mean, they were sent to your guardians, er...wait!" Korosensei said quickly as he continued to stumbled over his words before he dashed from the front of the class and was now hugging Nagataka's legs. "I''M SORRY! I DIDN'T MEAN IT! FORGIVE ME!" Korosensei cried.
I don't know..."
"I'll do anything! Please forgive me for what I said!" He pleaded. "I should of worded it differently!"
"Anything?"
"Yes!" He answered. "To a degree depending on the request" He quickly added.
"...Then that's not anything..." The class sweat dropped.
"I have something in mind" Nagataka said. "I'll tell you later"
Korosensei gave a breathe of relief before he disappeared in a burst of speed.
Korosensei was now out of the window. "Use of the fundamentals we've cultivated during the first semester, and over summer break, let's plat a lot, study a lot, and lastly, kill a lot!" He said as he stood on the roof. "THE ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM'S FIRST SEMESTER FUNDAMENTALS ARE HEREBY ENDED!"
I was going to change up the different winners but, I think it can work this way... Plus we were never told who was the highest scorer for Math in Class E was.
Whew, a long chapter. Also yes, I will reveal more about Nagataka's past and why he is like who he is in time.
Well...not really that long of a chapter but yeah whatever let's keep going. Next is the Summer Vacation Arc! However there will be a few chapters before they go to the island to show more vacation time.
