Thank you melliemoo for that spelling correction, Enobaria is now spelled right in this chapter, though, she is dead and may not be mentioned much after this. And Brutus is still alive. They only knocked him unconscious. ahem, anyway...
Enjoy!
Snowden's POV:
The night is cold. Finnick is asleep behind me. In my hand is Mag's token, a small gold coin that she found in the ocean as a child. Finnick had taken it off her body before we ran with the supplies from the thicket before the Capitol could take it along. He said he had given it to her since she had given it to him during his Games. He handed it to me before he went to bed. He blames me for her death. If I hadn't left her alone in the thicket, I would have recognized the nightlock berries. I could have kept her alive. But I chose to go back for the weapons and Finnick. That was my decision and it cost Mags her life. Along with Mags, Enobaria and the final tribute from six died that night. There hasn't been any more killing since. But I am not taking my chances. Even though I am watching the night around our hiding spot, I'm also keeping an eye on Finnick. It took us two days to reach the mountains. Now we just need to wait for Haymitch, Chaff, and Beetee. Thankfully they are still alive. Once we have all gotten back together and there are more of us, I think I'll be able to sleep comfortably, well, semi comfortably. I won't be able to have a good night's sleep again after this. Hopefully, Coin and Boggs know what to do when the time comes.
A canon shot startles me out of my thoughts and wakes Finnick. He joins me at the mouth of the cave and I hand him back the coin. He takes it, flips it in his fingers, and gives it back.
"Keep it." He says. "Maybe it'll bring you the same luck it did for both of us."
"It didn't give her much luck the other day." I mutter as he sits next to me.
"Maybe she felt her time was up." Finnick said, his way of telling me he doesn't blame me I guess. But I still don't know and I'm not gonna go easy on him when the time comes to hash it out. "That's why she volunteered you know." He says. "She felt she had lived long enough and knew me and Annie could still have a chance. Like you and Gale."
"Haymitch has never been one to give up easily." I laugh.
"Doubting me already, Sweetheart?" Haymitch's voice reaches my ears. I turn and look to see him, Beetee, and a wounded Chaff walking up the path, Chaff being supported by Haymitch. All three of them are covered in blood. Finnick and I hurry to help them. Finnick takes Chaff from Haymitch and I notice that my fellow tribute has a nasty cut to his face. To me, it looks like he was in a fight with a cat.
"What happened?" I ask as Finnick tries to tend to Chaff's wound and I melt snow to clean up Haymitch's face.
"Ran into District One and half of Two." Beetee answers as Haymitch wipes the blood from his face so I can get a better look at the scratches. They're deep, but with a snow coat, shouldn't scar too badly. "The girl went after Haymitch and Chaff took on the other two alone. Though, Brutus seemed to jump back and forth between the fights. I was hidden in a tree since I was trying to find where the two of you could have been hiding. What happened to Mags?" Neither of us answer as I hand out blankets in exchange for their jackets. Hopefully I'll be able to get the blood out of the white so they can stay safe. We'll have to move in the morning. I grab my staff and head outside the cave and go to a clear spot with plenty of moonlight. It's a few minutes when I hear snow crunching. I drop the jacket I have and grab my staff, spinning out the blades as I stand and spin only to stop inches from gutting Haymitch.
"Easy, Sweetheart." I take a breath and put the weapon away and go back to my cleaning. The blood is coming out pretty well. "What happened?"
"We were preparing food to keep with us so we could keep from having to light a fire every night and possibly give ourselves away." I say and I keep talking without stopping. "I had been attacked by Two while gutting some mutt I was able to bring down. I managed to trick them, but they must have found my tracks. They found us and attacked. I managed to kill Enobaria before Mags and I got out through a back way while Finnick took on Brutus. I left her in a thicket where I figured she would be safe while I went back for the rest of the weapons and Finnick. We knocked Brutus out and got away. We were too late to stop her from eating a nightlock berry. How did the three of you manage to get away?"
"Well, as Bee said, I was fighting the female from One. She managed to get a few good scratches on me once we both lost our weapons. I threw her off and onto Brutus's monster of a sword. Don't know if the kill went to me or him. Bee climbed down from his tree and threw a couple of well aimed rocks at the other two and we ran. Thought we had killed them actually, since they hadn't moved. But since there have been no more canons, they must have lived. What's your plan?"
"Have you gotten anything?"
"Not yet." He answers. "Maybe they haven't gotten to him yet." I nod and get up with the clean jackets. Haymitch takes his and puts it on just as another canon fires. We both race back up to the cave and find Finnick throwing Chaff's body out of it. I take a deep breath and look at the fisherman.
"Too many wounds. He lost too much blood."
"Gather what you can." I say. "We need to get out of here before anyone finds us. Keep heading north."
Gale's POV:
I watch as the group gathers their things and leave. Once they've cleared the area, a hovercraft shows up to recover the body. The sun hasn't even come up yet and already, two more tributes have died. But then again, it is the Quell. These are all veterans of the Games. They have won. They know what needs to be done in order to win again. I look at the note in my hand and to the secondary screen I have under the two that show Haymitch and Snow. I received a bread parcel in the list a few hours ago. The note said to send it to my tributes immediately. But can I really do that? I mean, the bread isn't even from our District. Is this even right? I look up at the main screen and the Head Gamemaker. He is looking at me. I still have the note in my hand. He nods ever so slightly. I'm not sure what is going on. This bread could be a trap? It could be poisoned. But if that was the case, why wouldn't it be in the Arena already? Why have a mentor send it? I take a deep breath and watch my tributes as they walk. They are coming to a clearing. I look at the gift screen and select the bread basket and press the button that will send it to them. It's seen immediately by Haymitch who catches it and the group disappears back into the trees, heading north.
I barely listen to the commenters asking why I sent the group bread. If I was asked, I would just have to say that it was something I felt my tributes needed that was provided by their sponsors. The fact that the bread is from District Six is something that I can't even answer. But the people would just think that because Six is out, they gave their bread to another District. At least that's my hope. I look at the main screen to see the males from Districts One and Two fighting. I was wondering when it was going to happen. It had been a hasty alliance to begin with since Cashmere and Gloss had found Brutus half alive in the snow yesterday. Now Cashmere was dead and it was because Brutus insisted on hunting Snowden and Finnick. The fight lasts only a few minutes until Gloss slips and Brutus cleaves him in half and just like that, District One is out of the running for the Quell win. Hopefully Snowden will understand whatever the bread is supposed to mean. These Games are not going to last much longer with the rate tributes are dying this year.
Snowden's POV:
We huddle in the storm and try to wait it out. This blizzard came on faster than we could have anticipated. Thankfully we got out of the mountains when we did. Last night, we learned that District One is gone and we already knew Chaff had died. Tomorrow, Coin comes for us. She knows that she needs to get who she can from the Arena. This is a concern as any of the others could be either left or picked up in the chaos. Brutus for sure is going to need to die before the extraction. He's no doubt hunting us, hunting me and Finnick. Blight and Johanna are another problem. I didn't get to know either of them very well during training, but Gale said they had requested me as an ally. I'm not sure how much I would have trusted Johanna. She has the same thinking as I do. I don't know what I want to do about Seeder either. Her partner is dead now and it's because we couldn't keep him safe or save him. But she doesn't know about the extraction. The only ones who do are Haymitch, Beetee, and myself. Finnick is coming with us just because of what he has already done for me and what I've done for him. I'm sure he still blames me for Mags though.
A canon is all the warning I have to turn and look before I see several people coming at us. I get to my feet and twist my staff into a bladed weapon. Beetee is furiously wrapping wire around the hilt of a sword. Finnick and Haymitch are on their feet as well. There is another boom from somewhere followed by a flash of lightning. In that light, I see Brutus just before he tackles me to the ground, my staff flying out of my hand. I manage to bring my hand forward and catch the knife he has aimed at my throat. I struggle with him to keep the knife from my throat as it inches closer. There is another flash of lightning and another explosion. There were only three pieces of bread in the basket. Three in the morning. This is it.
I kick Brutus in the groin and he merely grunts. Damn, this guy doesn't feel a damn thing. I grab the knife with my other hand and press myself into the ground while also positioning my feet on his stomach. I push up and throw him off me. The knife slices through my glove and I feel the steel bite into my skin. I ignore it as I scramble for my staff. I grab it and use it to block his sword. I push him away and get back to my feet and attack him, making sue the blades are out.
Another flash of lightning and I can see Finnick fighting with Blight and Haymitch fighting with Johanna. Beetee is in the trees with the wire. I don't see Seeder. Her death must have been the canon before Brutus attacked us. I wonder if the Gamemakers forced us together. I mean here it is, Day Six and there are still seven of us left. But this is also the extraction. Who knows what's going to happen.
Gale's POV:
The instant the explosions started, all the screens cut out. Peacekeepers are pouring into the room. The mentors and I are all staying where we are until we are taken from the room in a rush along with the Gamemakers. I don't know what is going on. The Head Gamemaker is taken down a different hall and I'm forced to follow him. We are taken to the roof and forced into a hovercraft. The Gamemaker doesn't seemed concerned. A woman joins us and we are in the air.
"What is going on?" I demand, noticing that we are moving fast and I am not restrained.
"Relax." The Gamemaker says as a man dressed in what looks to be a gray uniform comes in.
"Sir, we are minutes from the Arena. The forcefield has been destroyed and the area is clear for us to pick up the operatives." The Gamemaker doesn't say anything and it takes me a minute to realize that this man is talking to me.
"Thank you," the Gamemaker says. "You have your orders from Boggs."
"You know Boggs?" I say and he looks at me.
"He is the one who told me that I was to get you out of the control room when the explosions started. My name is Plutarch."
I don't say anything and try to think. I can't. Snowden had warned me of this, had told me it was going to happen. When I sent the bread, I didn't think that it was going to happen so quickly. There is silence until there is an announcement for the medical bay to prepare for the wounded. That's right, we had seen Brutus and others heading straight for the group. Some are bound to be injured. I get up to go to the medical bay. Plutarch comes with me. We watch as one by one, people are pulled aboard. Then the hover craft is jerking to the side and there is an explosion in the air beside us. The last person, the third, is pulled aboard and the door closes. I try to look through the medical staff to try to find Snowden. She should have been the first one to be picked up. But I don't see her as the tributes are wheeled to beds. The bodies are all male.
*insert maniacal evil laugh*
ahem, and that is the end of the Catching Fire portion of this fic. Thank you for reading and please review.
