Kaido Kio opened his eyes, yawning with the new day.
He peered at the bright purple digital clock on his wooden bedside table, his alarm would go off in a few minutes. He didn't shut it off, the noise would wake him more, and certainly he needed to get up.
It was very warm in his studio apartment this past week, so he slept with only shorts on, no shirt or boxers.
Sitting up he yawned again and scratched the back of his head. "I should call Sou-chan so he actually comes to class for once". His head shook in response, "Like he ever listens to me" he scoffed then stood to stretch.
As he went about his morning activities; breakfast, grabbing one or two hand-fulls of lollipops for the day, brushing teeth, and showering, all was performed automatically while his mind recollected happy memories.
- He turned and watched the friendless, gorgeous man pen notes on paper that was somehow more white than normal paper. He spoke to Soubi the first time that day...
- Azure eyes alight while hands and paintbrush changed pace, as one. This mysterious heaven-sent creature showed no emotional outrage when colors bled into one another, or his work didn't turn out as intended. No, he always painted another masterpiece...
A terrible memory then engulfed him...
- The day everything changed came about like a catastrophic storm. Soubi's demeanor transitioned from the quiet friendly loner to a zombie. The name of the demonic being who caused his friend plight was ever like acid on his tongue Seimei. Soon Soubi no longer answered his phone, and when Kio was able to catch him in person, it was only for a few minutes. He passed notes to the other man during class, approached him between classes, or when he knew the other male was finished for the day, but the response was brief. Now, every moment of his friend's life was controlled by this high school boy. He hated no one, but Seimei was unlike any other person he ever encountered, not that he truly saw him.
When wounds could no longer be shrugged off as accidents (though this amazing man seemed incapable of mistakes) Kio finally had enough; "It is not of your concern" Soubi's pained voice echoed in his mind...
One for smiles and laughter, Kio hid this sadness, especially from Soubi. Alone in his apartment though, he found tears easily jumped from his eyes and splashed upon his hands, artwork, food, and alcohol. Blinking them away covered his glasses with the salty spray. Until he cleaned the lenses, the heartache lingered as deeply.
Sounds in his favorite night club sometimes grew loud enough to hush the unease, but the moment he walked through the exit it returned in an immediate uproar...
Walking through the university doors, he hoped to see Soubi again today. That wish was quickly met with trepidation as he entered the first class they shared, and saw the amazing man setting up art materials. Another gash, this time on the left side of his jawbone. Kio couldn't take the sight, and ran to the exit leaving teardrops with each footfall.
How many times had he viewed such atrocities covering his friend's skin?!
What could he do? What could he say? Should he call the police?
Would that be betrayal, he wondered, and so did not. He didn't want Soubi to be abused though!
This disquiet was not simply from sexual attraction, but a deeper feeling- he loved Soubi and wished for his friend to live his life as he pleased, unshackled, free to be happy, free to smile again.
