Chapter 36
Pain…it was tolerable for the masked man for now. He kept his hand on the recently made wound. It represented what people felt about him… Unwanted… Who could blame them? The masked man did after all force everyone into war.
A shinobi from the land of water was going for an attack at the masked man, but Konohamaru blocked his path, a kunai directed to his neck.
"Not gonna happen," Konohamaru smirked.
One by one, Konoha ninja joined the three shinobi that defended the masked man. Tobi noticed this and was suspicious. Hanabi kept her glowing hands up. She knew Konoha ninja were going to help them. They were willing to risk their lives for what Naruto believed in, even if they didn't like the masked man. The rest of the ninja frowned, unable to understand why the Konoha ninja were standing up for their former enemy.
"The shinobi alliance has a law that states no one is allowed to attack Tobi without good reason," Konohamaru reminded everyone. The masked man had simply walked into the room; he didn't even have a second to blink before someone attacked him.
"You're right," Someone called with a voice that everyone recognized. People stepped aside, to open a path to the Mizukage. Few shinobi guards were behind her. The woman sighed, shaking her head as if disappointed with the jounin that attacked the masked man. "He hasn't done anything for many years to deserve such treatment," the woman made her way to the group of Konoha ninja. Hanabi moved so the Mizukage could see Tobi. "I apologize you had to-"
The Mizukage was interrupted with the masked man shaking a hand to her.
"Don't apologize Mizukage sama," Tobi mused like a child. "This is nothing but a scratch," he patted the wound like it was nothing. The Mizukage was confused to his act.
"It's not just a scratch," The Mizukage said. Blood wouldn't stop soaking the masked man's clothes. "Let me make it up to you with taking you to one of my best medical ninja," she insisted.
Tobi stepped back and shook his head. "Yeah right! They'll put me to sleep forever!" he imagined a medical ninja injecting some sort of drug, killing him.
"Stop acting like an idiot and go," Hanabi took a harsh hold on Tobi's right arm and yanked him forward.
"Oww! Abuse!" Tobi cried out, trying to slap Hanabi away like a wimp. The Mizukage blinked as this happened. She remembered the masked man as a dark individual, and not childlike man. She led them away from the place. Hanabi dragged Tobi who just kept whining the whole time. Konohamaru decided to stay behind, knowing Hanabi was capable of taking care of the masked man alone.
The Mizukage turned to everyone one more time. "I would like it if no one attacked Tobi. So please calm your grudges during your stay in Kirigakure," She said before leaving with the masked man and a couple of guards.
Konohamaru whistled with relief. He noticed there were few ninja glaring at him, obviously disliking the fact he defended the masked man.
"Watch it…I'm going to be the next Hokage," he warned them amused.
"Each tester will start off with a perfect score of ten points." Ibiki began listing the rules for the participants, writing them on the black board that was up in front of the room. "The test consists of ten questions and one point is subtracted from your initial total for every question answered incorrectly."
Miso gulped, hoping he at least got a good score.
"The test is a team event, Meaning that passing is determined by combining each team's total score," Ibiki revealed much to everyone's dismay. Miso's eyes widened. Mizuki was shocked while Chan slapped his head hard. This couldn't be happening… he glared to where Miso was, who slowly shrunk on his seat. Madara titled his head to the side. The exam was really that important?
"Those caught cheating will lose two points for each offense."
Madara raised an eyebrow behind his mask at this.
"Those that lose all their points during the exam and those that fail to answer any questions correctly will fail along with their teammates…"
"Why should we suffer if our teammates fail with the test?" someone asked annoyed among the Genin. Ibiki looked at the shinobi.
"Why not? You are a squad for a reason…" he answered the boy. "If a teammate makes a mistake, the whole team suffers. That is reality."
Everyone looked at one another. They all believed the test was unfair. Was it their responsibility to force their teammates to study things for a random test?
"Anyone have anything else to say?" Ibiki looked around. They knew they had no other choice but to do what the man said. After all he gave Madara only two options earlier. Pass the test or leave. "Begin!" Ibiki announced. Everyone looked down at their papers and began reading the questions.
What is the derivative of the speed if a kunai if its thrown at…Madara stopped reading the first question. He didn't even know what a derivative was… how the hell was he supposed to answer this? Did these questions really tell if a person was a great ninja? He skipped to the second question and read it. What is the percentage if one was to make clones with a body structure of…. Madara frowned behind his mask. The only thing he ever had to know in class as a child was how to count, read and write…
Miso had the paper up, staring at the questions. He tried to stay calm, slowly reading one by one… I'm twelve years old…how am I supposed to know this? The boy bit his lower lip.
Mizuki tapped the end of her pencil on the desk. The questions were very hard. She knew how to approach maybe a few of them thanks to her mother hiring tutors to keep her mind busy with things. The only thing that made her nervous about the test was the fact her teammates wouldn't be able to answer a single one... From the corner of her eye, she looked at Keiko who visibly hated the test. She hadn't made any markings. So it seemed not many people were able to answer these questions…
I don't know how to do number one…the voice of Koichi said in Keiko's mind. The girl frowned.
Trust me…I have no idea too, she groaned, leaning on her chair.
We aren't the only ones who are stuck, Koichi saw his father simply staring down at the test. But I believe… we're not supposed to know the answers…
What? Keiko didn't understand what her brother meant.
Miso grabbed his head, placing his chin on the table. He didn't know what he was supposed to do… The questions were just too hard. He felt stupid. Were they really going to lose their chance at the second stage because of him? No…he couldn't let this happen… He felt tears threaten to come out. He promised his parents he would try his best. Quitting wasn't an option. The boy slowly lowered his hands on the table, as they trembled…
Shizuka was deep in thought, not really paying attention to the exam. She looked up at the board, rereading each rule. Usually, when one cheated it, the person automatically failed. So why in this test, if one was caught cheating, they would mark two points from their test?
A ninja is skilled with gathering information without getting caught, Koichi explained to Keiko who listened carefully. A Chunnin is better at gathering information compared to a Genin. This test is to prove if we are qualified to be Chunnin…
"Number thirty, you fail," a Chunnin announced in the room with a smirk. The shinobi that was called got up annoyed. Everyone looked up silently, surprised that someone dared to cheat.
"No way!" He snapped.
"Three strikes and you're out…" the Chunnin pointed to the exit with his thumb, mockingly.
They weren't good enough to gather information…Koichi told his sister while the squad that was eliminated angrily walked out of the room.
I don't get it…Keiko frowned.
Tobi sat on an exam table, inside the hospital of Kirigakure. He was stripped from his flak jacket and long sleeve shirt. A medical ninja was healing the masked man's wound, located on the left side of his waist. Hanabi was in the room, making sure the medic did his job. They were dead silent. The masked man was annoyed by the way he was attacked. He could have easily defended himself in any way. The man was sure his sharingan was going to activate at the second the man's kunai made contact with him. The kunai should have easily phased through his body. If he had known his sharingan wasn't going to activate that time, he could have defended himself in other ways…
A knock ruined his deep thought, making him look up as the Mizukage walked into the room after the medic gave her permission.
"I'm unable to activate my Dojutsu…" the masked man said coldly. He had tried to activate the rinnegan and the sharingan before he was taken to the hospital, his eyes stayed the way they are. He assumed the woman would know the reason behind this.
The Mizukage sighed. "We decided it would be best to decrease your power…by disabling your sharingan and rinnegan."
"We?" Tobi asked annoyed, his anger against the Hokage increasing by the second.
"The Hokage doesn't know…yet," she honestly admitted.
"That's not how things work," Hanabi frowned. "Each Kage are to be notified with issues like this."
The Mizukage nodded. "You're right…"
"And why would you disable my power?" Tobi asked annoyed. "I already have the damn seal that any appointed ninja can kill me in a second."
"For the second stage of the Chunnin Exams," The Mizukage answered. Hanabi furrowed her eyebrows. The masked man shared her confusion.
"What are you guys planning for the second stage…?" Hanabi asked.
The Mizukage eyed them before revealing it. "The Jounin are going to join their Genin, locked in a dangerous area, and fight to survive…"
The masked man was shocked. He was going to be placed with his Genin and expected to fight along side them against other dangerous Jounin? Now he understood why Naruto didn't want them to participate in the Chunnin Exams. This was bad… The other Jounin would seriously take advantage of the second stage and get a chance at his life. Well he did have a choice… he could simply pull his Genin out of the competition, and head back home… He clenched his teeth with anger. What was he saying? Was he really going to back out just because he couldn't use his eyes? He was more powerful than that… His hands turned into fists, ignoring Hanabi and the Mizukage that were busy talking about the second stage conditions. Hanabi didn't like the idea at all.
Mizuki had her eyes closed, deep in thought. She heard other numbers called out, kicking Genin out of the room for getting caught. She questioned the rules just like the others. Shinobi are best at keeping a low profile… she opened her eyes and took a small glimpse of Hideko who had her Byakugan eyes activated… She was writing in her test, as if she knew the answers… Or mainly she was copying someone's test…specifically from the man that sat in front of them…
Teens like us aren't really expected to know these kind of things… Mizuki thought as she looked at one of the last questions that asked about medical issues. Only a well trained nurse or doctor would…
And from what I see…there is only a handful of people that are writing down things, Koichi told his sister as most of the Genin were simply staring at their papers.
Cheating from them and not get caught is the only way for us to get these answers…Chan realized.
Mizuki slowly had a smile on her face, thanking Hideko for confirming her theory. Sharingan! Mizuki activated her power. Immediately her hand moved at the same tempo like the man she was copying. This is too easy…
I see now…Keiko chuckled. She tightly pressed her right foot on the floor. It slowly merged with the material. Zetsu…help us, she called out with her mind. Up from the ceiling, an eye appeared, and it zoomed to people's test, quickly spotting one with many answers already done. Keiko and Koichi stayed silent and listened to the information leaked to them before writing them down.
Daiki waited for a Genin to finish few problems before getting his hands in a certain formation. Mind transfer jutsu… his head dropped on the desk as he took full control of a girl's body. He began memorizing her answers.
Katsuo sent few mosquitoes from his socks, to roam around and gather the information that he needed. He chuckled with amusement.
Takeshi's wolf looked behind him, staring at someone's test. The shinobi ignored the wolf, thinking it wasn't trained to really do a thing, that it was simply a pet. Unknowingly for him the wolf was actually gathering information.
One of Hiruzen's teammates, a female ninja, closed her blue eyes and without anyone's knowledge, her soul pulled out from her body. No one could see her soul. She gingerly walked through the desks and peeked over someone's shoulder for the answers. She then returned to her own body to write down what she had memorized. Each time she had an answer down, her pencil would move sideways, in a certain pattern. Few rows behind her, Hiruzen watched the pencil steadily and answered his test.
Daiki, unlike his mother, placed his hands behind himself quickly and used the mind transfer jutsu on Shizuka. Daiki, in Shizuka's body wrote down the answers on her paper. Once he was finished he returned to his body. Shizuka shook her head once she was in control once again in her body. Her left hand formed into a hand sign. Shadow poession jutsu, her shadow stretched and traveled around people's feet and took over HIruka's body. Hiruka, who was in the same row as Daiki, blinked as his right hand began to move without his guidance. Shizuka began to write the answers over her own.
Sunako smiled when a very small folded paper made its way on her lap. It was attached to a chakra string by her teammate that was two rows behind her. The teammate was her cousin, wearing a hooded blue sweater, with the same paint markings like his father, Kankuro. He was older than Sunako. The girl unfolded the paper on her lap by using sand that came out from her small gourds. She quickly wrote down the answers from the paper. She then noticed Miso was moving side to side, obviously freaking out. The girl blinked. Miso could have easily copy someone with his Byakugan… did he really not understood what the test was about?
Miso bit the nail of his thumb. This was insane. How could he get an answer right? The boy had his eyes glued on the test, he wanted to scream, get his anxiety out like he did before. Suddenly sand was making its way on top of his paper. The boy blinked and was about to wipe it away when it slowly took forms in letters. It was a message from Sunako. It read, you're supposed to cheat, before it drifted away. Miso blinked. His mind slowly processed it and clapped his hands with his head when he realized he was a huge idiot.
Sunako sweat dropped, she had forgotten the boy was a bit of a slowpoke…
Miso quickly used Byakugan and scanned through people to find the answers for his exam. I owe you Sunako… the boy thought in his mind, thanking her while he copied the answers into his test.
Chan was frowning the whole time. Even if he realized what the trick of the exam was… he didn't have any special abilities to gather the information. He was a taijutsu user for crying out loud! His teammates had forgotten about him. They were using their eyes to answer the questions. He slowly peeked to Madara's paper that was covered in doodles… Chan was silent. What was the man doing…? Did he not realize what he was supposed to do?
Madara was very bored, drawing people as best as he could. He wasn't an artist so all that came out of his art work was stick figures. He had realized a while ago he had to cheat to get the answers. It was all about gathering information. He could easily do so with his sharingan, but he didn't believe it was worth using his powerful eyes for this lame test. His eyes were better than that. It would be disgraceful to use them… Madara decided to wait for the tenth question. The tenth question stated to wait forty five minutes after the test was distributed. His kids would for sure gather the right answers to all the questions. So all he had to do was to get at least one right answer which would be the last one…
He yawned, leaning back, and shifted his pencil around his fingers. The Chunnin Exams were supposed to be exciting…well that was what the Uchiha man thought. The man was very disappointed and accidentally flicked the pencil at a man in front of him. The guy's head cringed from the hit and immediately turned around, glaring daggers at Madara. Madara watched him calmly before giving him a peace sign.
"Trying to mess with me?" the man snapped, obviously he had a short temper.
"Keep it down, or you'll be kicked out!" a Chunnin called out annoyed. Madara placed a hand on his mask and a finger pointed at the Genin, mocking him.
"Someone got in trouble~" he taunted.
The guy glared. "You will regret that…" he hissed before turning back to his test.
Madara chuckled calmly; he liked to test people's patience with him. A shinobi had to be disciplined, calm and collected.
"Ten more minutes till the tenth question," Ibiki announced from his desk.
Miso was amused; it didn't matter to him as he was finishing the test up with all the correct answers. Mizuki, Keiko and Hanabi didn't seem to care also, while Chan grasped his pencil tightly. He had to at least get the tenth question correct… If not…then he and his team would surely fail at the first stage of the Chunnin Exams…Oh how he hated his life at times…
