As the five ponies challenged every trap in the castle that they faced, Twilight and Sunset Shimmer weren't nearing victory on either side for their team. Nightmare Moon was taking the lead by this point. This was because of Nightmare Moon ultimately teleporting herself into the centre of the circle of the elements, Sunset Shimmer had a small amount of hope as a spark emerged from her horn and caused a lime green aura to surround each element stone. Nightmare Moon was in fright and horror of when she thought that her plans were ruined, but luckily for her the magic aura quickly faded.
"What, why didn't it work!?" Sunset cried pounding her hooves on the hard brick ground beneath her.
Nightmare Moon laughed with a thought of victory clouding her doubt, she laughed in success as she raised her front hooves into the air and quickly stomped them onto the ground which caused a strong vibration to be flown into the ground and towards the elemental stones which were greatly affected by the vibrations and were shattered into a hundred pieces. Sunset watched in shock and sadness of her loss as the broken pieces of the elemental stones fell to the ground with a glass like sound as they touched the ground.
"Now there's no hope for you at all. The night will last forever!" Nightmare Moon announced as a dark storm outside made her announcement seem more dramatic.
Sunset sat there feeling very upset, dumbfounded and regretful for what she let happen, she had no idea what to do next. And she had no idea that she'd be feeling a light touch on her back from Twilight as a sign for support.
"Don't worry, me and my friends will stop her."
"But how? She destroyed the elements! Unless you've got some kind of special alicorn spell to make them back to normal it's a loss here!" Sunset cried while looking over at the elements and Nightmare Moon basking in her glory.
Twilight smiled down at Sunset then looked behind her as her smile faded slowly in slow loss of hope of her friends ever finding where she was. But when she returned face to face with Sunset Shimmer, she heard a familiar giggle from Pinkie Pie and knew that it was a good sign, so the smile she had before returned but even brighter.
Nightmare Moon was still basking in her glory until she heard hoof steps approaching the room, several hoof steps in fact. She looked up to see five other ponies enter the room with smiles of pride, determination and hope written all over their faces.
"What are you all smiling about?" She asked lowering her head.
Twilight came forth and began to speak with high hopes and determination.
"Nightmare Moon, you may have destroyed the elements themselves, but you cannot destroy the elements themselves."
Sunset looked very confused and dumbfounded by what Twilight was saying to Nightmare Moon. Didn't she just say that? Sunset thought to herself.
"What are you doing?" Sunset asked in a serious yet confused tone.
Applejack hushed the confused unicorn. "Twilight's makin' things all good again. Just let her do her thing."
Sunset replied with an expression of annoyance, but then turned her attention towards Twilight who was standing her ground against Nightmare Moon.
"The spirits of the elements have always been here, you cannot destroy the spirits of the elements!" Twilight announced to Nightmare Moon with determination.
But what Twilight had completely forgotten about was Athanasia, Twilight had been reminiscing this whole time about her very first adventure with her friends that she had completely forgotten who was the main cause for all his mess to happen all over again for Twilight.
"That's where you're wrong Twilight!" Sounded a voice that echoed throughout the castle walls and sounded very familiar to them all, and also made Twilight's determination go down drastically.
Twilight gasped as soon as she looked up towards the sky, she saw that somehow the sky had worsened in colour and the clouds were extremely stormy by this point which caused damaging winds which made all the pony's manes ruffle in the heavy wind, and rain had began to fall everywhere outside the castle as well as inside due to the wind. The wind was so strong that the rain was falling horizontally.
"Oh no, I forgot all about her!" Twilight cried aloud.
"Who?" Sunset asked cocking an eyebrow while keeping her eyes at the sky to where the voice was sounded from.
Nightmare moon looked up and was also confused, she had heard of this voice but it didn't come very familiar to her until she saw the alicorn appear from the clouds with a dark aura of magic surrounding her. And instantly, the memories of her childhood came back to haunt Nightmare Moon.
*flashback*
"Mother, please tell me about the story of the evil alicorn." Young filly Luna asked her mother with curiosity of knowing more about this strange alicorn and her strange name that Luna could not yet pronounce.
"Sorry darling, but you must ask your father about the past. I must tell your sister of a destiny." Her mother replied as her long glowing mane wandered in the breeze as she walked off to Celestia's room seeming like she was getting older by the minute, that was ever since Celestia had received her cutie mark.
"But I want to hear it from you." Luna pleaded with large dilating eyes.
"I'm sorry, but please go ask your father."
So young filly Luna ran down the hallways of the castle to find her father slowly raising the moon and creating the infinite number of stars in the night sky. It was a tiring work for this alicorn but it was his duty and it will soon be Luna's, but because she was still young and had no cutie mark yet her father was still riding strong on his duty.
"Father, may you tell me the tale of the evil alicorn?" Luna asked politely as she walked up to her father on the balcony.
"Not now my sweetheart, perhaps wait a small moment." Her father suggested while creating the stars of the night sky.
Luna created a frown on her face and walked slowly back inside and waited patiently for her father to complete his daily duties before retelling the tale of the evil alicorn.
It was moments later that her father had walked inside and closed the doors of the balcony with his strong alicorn magic and sat down next to Luna on the hoof made cushions.
"Now my daughter, this alicorn story is no fantasy. It happened to your mother and I a long time ago. We feared that the worst would happen to the land if this alicorn would not be stopped."
Luna had felt so intrigued by this story that she paid full attention to even the intimate details of the story.
"So your mother and I combined our powerful alicorn magic together to stop the evil Athanasia and with that she was sent to the heavens for good. And she has remained three ever since for her greed and selfish ways." Her father ended after a good hour of telling Luna the tragic but heroic story of himself and his partner.
"Wow…so do you think that Athansia will stay up there forever?" Luna asked while accidentally saying the evil alicorns name wrong since she had trouble pronouncing it correctly.
"We hope with the entire world that she will remain up there for eternity."
*flashback ended*
"You!" Nightmare Moon said with much hatred. "You reined terror on my world!"
Athanasia landed with pride and determination of her plans. "Hah, you? Your world?" You weren't even born when I claimed this world as my own!" Athanasia announced selflessly.
Twilight was surprised to see Nightmare Moon acting this way, it seemed that memories conquered evil somehow and broke through the barrier to make her remember when she was young. It shocked her the most; she always thought that she would regain all her memories after the elements of harmony defeated her dark magical powers.
But what struck Twilight's mind with confusion was that she was still in the form of Nightmare Moon and still evil as she would be except she was very much against Athanasia just like she and her friends were.
"That's strange, why didn't her memories defeat her evil powers but were able to break the barrier to make her remember who Athanasia really was?" She asked herself.
Sunset walked up to Twilight in response to that question she had overheard. "That's simple, her memories aren't strong enough. The elements are. " And then Sunset changed her mood and expression to anger. "And that's why I was going to get the elements for myself! So I could claim my victory for myself."
"Man, are you full of yourself?" Rainbow added while rolling her eyes.
"And it's not like you're full of yourself Rainbow Dash." Applejack added in pure sarcasm.
"Whatever."
Twilight then returned all her attention towards the powerful argument that Nightmare moon and Athanasia were facing it each other. But what had then quickly returned to her mind were the elements that had shattered into a hundred pieces. This then made her mind remember the main importance of activating the elements.
"My spark…how will it happen?!" Twilight wondered in slight panic.
Sunset Shimmer rolled her eyes in annoyance and no known knowledge of the spark that she was talking about. "Would you please stop talking about your spark? A magic spark will work not some spark you get inside of you."
Twilight looked at Sunset with utter confusion about Sunset complaining about that, she then wondered again how Sunset could contribute to help solving this entire situation. She then thought of a possible idea that could work.
"Sunset, you need to forget your greed towards the elements and help us save Equestria from these two alicorns. And I assure you, you will get the respect you deserve and your lesson in friendship." Twilight explained to her feeling very determined and serious of her statement.
Sunset looked down in disbelief. "Why should I believe you? You're the pony after me who succeeded in her studies because you waited and all that. I just don't have the patience in me to get to your stage." She explained almost beginning to cry.
"I understand, but good things come to those who wait."
What a very interesting chapter if I do say so myself ^^ And I do apologize for the big delay but as I said before a lot has come up since I actually started writing up this chapter so it got sidetracked, but at least I finished it for you guys. :) And as you can see, the end is very VERY near so don't expect a whole lot more chapters. I am expecting around 2-4 more chapters on this story before wrapping it up and making another story but not about MLP unfortunately ^^; Next update will be in a week or so, I'm not gunna give a specific date cuz I never stick to them ^^;
