Daryl walked in the bedroom from working on his bike to see Angel sitting in the bed, sheets just over her knees with her elbows rested on them. She was looking at the dresser that had her Medal of Honor and Purple Heart on it. He went and sat next to her, "You sure you're alright?"
She nodded, "Did you know I also was supposed to get the Prisoner of War Medal too?"
"Huh?" He asked.
"Yeah they have a fucking medal for that." She couldn't help but laugh, "Congrats, you got caught and held prisoner, here's a medal."
"Why didn't you get it?" He asked.
"I technically did. I gave it to my brother. He deserved it more, he got me out after all." She looked at him, "Daryl, really I'm fine. It just brought up some stuff."
"I know, you had a nightmare last night." He told her.
She nodded her head, rubbing the back of her neck, "They didn't even do anything and it still got to me."
"What happened?"
"We killed them. Because we had to." She answered. "Once the first shot was fired in that compound we had to kill them. Because after that they would come for us. Now they won't. Because…that's how you win wars now."
"Ang…" He put his arm around her.
"It's true." She said, "If we had finished the Governor completely we'd still have the prison, if I had finished Terminus, we'd still have Bob-"
"If we'd finished the hospital, we'd still have Beth." He said, "I get it."
"So do I now. I never liked unnecessary killing…but maybe now it's not unnecessary." She put her head on his shoulder, "That's what I meant by staying who I am and protecting people being a contradiction now. But I figured it out."
He gave her a kiss on the forehead, "Alright. I brought you somethin'."
"What?" She asked and he pulled a can of peaches and she laughed.
"Found it at the compound." He told her.
"You bring me a can opener?" She asked and laughed when he pulled one out of his pocket, "Daryl Dixon, maybe you are as sweet as a peach." He watched as she took one of the slices and put it in her mouth and she let out a moan, "Aw, it's so good!"
He couldn't help but smile before kissing her, "Does taste good."
She laughed and offered him the can and they sat there sharing the slices.
Denise and Rosita came up to them as they sat out in front of the house Daryl working on his bike. She told them about an apothecary they found that could have a bunch of medicine inside and wanted them to go with her. Angel shook her head, "I have patrol with Glenn in about an hour." She looked to Daryl, "Go with her, it'll do you good to get away from that bike for a bit."
"You never used to complain this much about my bike." He looked at her.
"Because you weren't working on it all the time." She smiled back then gave him a kiss on the cheek, "Bring us back some good drugs."
After her patrol she and Glenn were checking on the garden when the group came back. They heard yelling and she heard Daryl yell her name, "Angel! We need medical!"
"Where's Denise?" She asked running in front of him. His eyes moved from hers and he shook his head. She swallowed but then looked to Glenn, "Get Maggie, I need her help."
Glenn nodded and went off. They got inside the infirmary and placed Eugene down on the bed and she began opening his shirt as Maggie came in, "Angel what do you need?"
"Uhh. I- um-" She wasn't sure, she wasn't a doctor, she had no actual training, and Maggie got down to look at her face.
"Angel you've done this before, you used to help my dad all the time. What do you need?"
"Uhh…Clean towels. Forceps. Stitch needle and thread. And…and a lighter." She replied. Daryl watched her as she caught the towels Maggie tossed to her and she placed it over the wound. He knew she wasn't a medic, but then he remembered Aidens words to him 'During a war soldiers are many things, fighters, defenders, doctors, and even fire rescue.' Watching her now he knew that was true as she took the forceps away from the fire, sanitizing it, and yelled for everyone to hold Eugene down as she went in for the bullet. He watched hearing everything Denise had said to him about facing what they were dealing with what they were going through, how they're strong, and how it gave her hope. Angel was the embodiment of what Denise had been talking about, she was strong and smart, but she also knew how to deal with what she went through, she had to change it somewhat now that her brother was gone, but she knew, which it seemed like nobody else did. She was adaptable because she had to be, because that's how she survived. Because that's how they all would survive. By dealing with what was happening and changing to handle it.
She found Daryl and Carol burying Denise and walked over to them. She looked at Daryl, "Was it them? The people who took your stuff? More of the Saviors?"
"Yeah." He looked at her.
"And they know where we live." Angel looked down at the grave, "We played offense with them already. We change it to defense and they might be able to overrun us. There are clearly more than we thought." She looked back at both of them, "We have to play both sides of the field. We have to protect this place, everything in it, but we also have to strike at them."
Daryl nodded and Carol just looked to the ground, and Angel patted her on the shoulder as she left. She knew Carol wasn't coping well with what she'd become, how good at it she was. As he watched Angel walk away he knew what he had to do. When he finished burying Denise he went back to their house and found her changing out of her clothes and he came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, kissing the back of her neck. She turned and looked at him and he cupped the side of her face before kissing her again. His arm wrapped around her back and he felt her bare skin beneath his fingers as he began walking them over to the bed. Her fingers ran through his hair as they laid on the comforter, their tongues touching. She pulled away from him slightly, "I get it. You want me to play defense while you go on offense."
"You're good at it." He responded.
"I know. I'm good at offense too. But you want me to be safe." She moved hair from his face, "I will, for now, just so long as you come back."
"I will." He kissed her again taking off his shirt.
The next morning she was sitting on the porch smoking a cigarette as she heard the motorcycle start. She knew she would do the same thing if it had happened to her. Tobin came up the stairs and knocked on the door and motioned for her to come too as Rick let her in, "Carol left this."
"What?" Angel asked as Rick read the note.
"Angel she left one for you and Sophia too." Tobin handed her a second note and Angel nodded as Rick left the house to try and find out what happened.
She went upstairs to find Sophia and knocked on the girl's door and explained to her what had happened while giving her the note from her mother, "So mom left because she can't kill anyone anymore?"
"Right, sometimes some people reach a point when they won't be able to look at themselves in the mirror, they won't be able to sleep at night, if they keep doing what they do." She put her hand on Sophia's as they sat on the bed, "You understand that she does love you though right? She left because she loves you and she would kill to save you."
"But she can't kill any more so she shouldn't be around the people she loves." The girl nodded, "I understand. You'll still look out for me right though?"
"Until you don't need me to anymore." Angel smiled giving her a kiss on the top of her head.
"Then I'll be fine, because I know she'll be fine, she's a survivor now." Sophia smiled.
"You're damn straight." She laughed.
A little while later after her watch Angel was told Maggie wanted to talk to her and she went to her house and went inside. Enid was starting to cut Maggies hair and Angel smiled, "Might ask you to do me next, just a trim though."
"I can give it a shot." Enid smiled.
"Angel, you know Daryl left this morning?" Maggie asked and Angel nodded, "I figured that's why you were so calm about it, why you didn't race off after him."
"I know what's on his mind. He has his reasons." Angel told her.
"Can you explain it to me?" Maggie looked concerned.
Angel sighed and sat down at the counter, "After we cleared all the walkers, after…after I was better, we talked for a whole night, didn't even sleep. We talked about everything that's happened since the prison, everything we couldn't talk about while it was happening. He blamed himself for your dad's death. For Beths death. He said if he'd just kept looking then maybe none of it would have ever happened. Now he sees someone murdered with his own bow, a man he tried to save, a man who fights with our enemies now, he's doing what he didn't do back then. He's looking for him before he finds us."
Maggie nodded understanding, "And you're alright with that?"
"It's who he is." Angel answered back, "It's one of the reasons I love him. He cares a lot, he just has a hard time showing it."
"I know." Maggie smiled at her, "I just wish he had talked about it with us before he left. We need all hands on deck here."
"That's why I'm here. That's why he wanted me to stay. To help all of you instead of him." Angel gave her a nod.
"And because he wanted you safe."
"That too." Angel laughed. She pointed to the womans now short hair, "It looks good."
"Thanks." Maggie said picking up a mirror then winced in pain.
"What? Is it bad? I only used to do my dad's." Enid asked her then Maggie crumpled to the ground holding her stomach.
"Maggie!" Angel went to her, "Maggie what is it?"
"The baby." Maggie stuttered out.
"Angel help her!" Enid almost yelled frantically.
"I'm not that kind of Doctor!" Angel looked back then focused, "Alright Enid you stay here with her, get her to the couch and lay her down. I'm going to get some help, see if we have any low dosage stuff to help with the pain."
She ran from the house and went for the infirmary and Aaron saw her running. He caught up to her, "Angel what's wrong?"
"It's Maggie." She answered busting through the doors to the house and starting to look through medicine, "Somethings wrong with the baby she said."
"What? What's wrong? What do we do?!" Aaron asked her.
"I don't know!" She yelled, "I'm not a doctor! I'm not a field medic! I'm a soldier for god's sake! I don't save people like this!"
"Right." Aaron nodded and started looking through stuff, "What were her symptoms?"
"She…she was fine one second then the next she was in pain around her stomach, doubled over." Angel rummaged through medicine, "Oh god, what if it was from when we got taken?"
"You mean…you don't thinks shes…?" Aaron asked.
Angel quickly got rid of the thought, "No if she was miscarrying there would have been blood, she wasn't bleeding just in pain, that's a good sign."
"Yeah, yeah it is." Aaron agreed.
"Fuck! I don't know what to give a pregnant woman other than aspirin!" She yelled slamming her fists down on the counter.
"Angel." Aaron came over to her, "Angel, calm down it's okay, it's going to be alright."
"No it's not." She said tears brimming in her eyes, "Glenns not here because he went after Daryl. Maggie needs Glenn here, now, for something like this."
"He'll be back soon." He reassured her.
"What if soon isn't soon enough. If we can't figure out what's wrong…" Angel looked at him.
"Angel, any luck?" Rick asked coming in, "Carl came and got me."
"I don't know. I don't know about this stuff." She replied.
"Come on, we've got to get her to a doctor. To Hilltop." Rick said and she nodded grabbing a bottle of aspirin before leaving the house.
His shoulder stung as he was being pulled into the back of a truck with Glenn, Michonne, and Rosita. He could feel the blood coming out of it and wondered how Angel had managed with two of these at one time, or having one in her leg. He wouldn't die though, he refused to die, not until he saw her again, saw that she was alright.
