A couple of more weeks had gone by since Matt was in prison. Lita was just beginning to feel a little bit like her old self, before she met her ex-boyfriend. She was feeling more and more comfortable and less terrified of just being by herself or even going out in public. However, there was still a part of her which was just waiting for the man to jump out of a random corner and attack her when she was outside by herself or for him to break in when she was alone at the apartment.
And that was exactly why Lita was at the prison Matt was going to be calling home hopefully for the rest of his life. She needed and wanted to see for herself that he was actually locked behind bars and maybe that would help her move on in every way she needed to.
Of course Lita didn't tell any of her friends where she actually went because she knew Dawn and John would either try to stop her or have John tag along as a condition for her to actually go to the prison and she felt like this was something she had to do alone. The woman just told them she had an interview which was a complete lie because she hadn't had one of those in a while. The redhead still wasn't having any success in find a teaching job or any kind of job for that matter. She felt at this rate she was never going to find a job again, but she wasn't going to give up.
Lita shook those thoughts out of her head when she heard the guard nearby speak to her. "If you could just follow me." She did as she was told and followed the guard to where Matt was currently being held. Lita asked if it was possible if she could just see Matt while he was in his cell and not in some other room because she needed those bars to separate them. They told her they usually didn't do that, but luckily for her, they made exceptions every now and then and decided to do so for her as well.
Lita tried to ignore everything and everyone around her during the walk to where Matt was being held. Since she was actually going to see Matt while he was in his cell, she did have to walk past the other prisoners. She felt very uncomfortable walking around there, but felt a little better knowing that there was a guard right next to her. Unfortunately for her, the man walked away once they arrived to where Matt was. He didn't go too far, but it was far enough for Lita's comfort.
The woman looked over at the smirking man behind the bars. She simply stared at him for a while before she was about to walk away. Lita just wanted to leave now that she saw for herself that Matt was locked away, she didn't want to talk to him at all. Unfortunately for her, Matt had other plans.
"I see you missed me as much as I missed you. You just couldn't stay away could you?" Lita stopped in place, but didn't turn around to face him. Instead, she decided it would be better to ignore him and just walk away, but once again, he preferred that not to happen. "I know you still love me." That did it, Lita finally turned around to face him. "I love-"
"Shut up!" Lita cut him off. "Keep your mouth shut. You disgust me."
Matt wasn't phased and the smirk never left his face. "That's not what you used to say."
"Yea well that's before I knew who the real you was."
"Yea, and who may that be?"
"A pathetic bastard who's going to rot in prison for the rest of his life."
Matt shook his head. "You know I can't stay away from you for that long. Don't worry, I'll come back for you soon. Whether it's tomorrow or thirty years from now. I can and will never forget you."
Lita didn't say anything in response, instead she finally walked away when she decided she had more than enough. All she wanted to do was see that he was for sure locked away and she saw that so she had no reason to stay there any longer.
Once back in the car, the woman just sat there for a moment. She was just trying to gather herself so she could drive herself back home. Lita took a deep breath and looked through the rear view mirror when she was finally ready to drive away. Only she saw someone sitting in the back seat with the same disgusting smirk she became so familiar with.
Lita's scream was cut short when she felt a hand covering her mouth. "I told you I would come back for you."
The redhead did the only thing she could think of, she bit his hand. Matt let go of her long enough for her to open the car door and get out. Unfortunately for her, that was as far as she got. She fell to the ground hard when she felt someone knock her down from behind. Next thing she knew, Matt began kicking her and yelling different things at her. He grabbed her, picked her up, and pushed her hard against the car before he began to choke her.
"You hurt me just as much as you claim that I hurt you! You are such a whore, but I still love you despite all of that! Who else is going to be there for you like I have? Who else is going to love you like I did? Like I do? No one! Why can't you see that you belong to me?!"
Lita struggled against Matt who continue to choke her and yell at her. She finally decided to give up knowing there was no point fighting against him when he proved to be stronger than her. The pressure around her neck was getting harder and harder. No one was going to help her either, it was like they were the only two people around. She closed her eyes and waited for all of this to officially end.
Lita woke up terrified and screaming. She looked around the room in a pan to see she was in her room which meant she was far away from Matt, but that didn't calm her down any and her screams were replaced by cries. This dream felt too real probably because it kind of was. She actually did go to see Matt about two weeks ag and ever since then, that meeting kept playing over and over in her head every time she went to sleep, but the ending always ended up different.
Lita jumped a bit and looked up when she heard a banging on the door and like someone was trying to get in. Lately, she had been locking the door to the room whenever she went to sleep and made sure the windows were closed and locked as well. "It's me Lita," she heard a familiar voice say. "It's John, please open the door." The redhead quieted down a bit but made no movement to do as he said so he continued. "Come on Lita, please open the door."
Slowly, but surely, the woman finally got up and walked towards the door and opened it to reveal the concerned man on the other side. John wasn't surprised at all by being awaken by Lita's screams because this had been a reoccurring scene for the past few mornings. He was really worried about her because she seemed fine for a while, but then all of this happened out of nowhere. But of course, John didn't know about the little visit she paid Matt so he was very confused how she changed all of a sudden.
"Are you okay?" John asked Lita who had stopped crying and had calmed down a lot even though she was still shaking a little. Lita simply nodded. "What happened?"
"Just a nightmare."
"About what?" John asked even though he just knew it dealt with Matt.
Lita shook her head. "Nothing."
"Lita-"
"I don't want to talk about it."
"If you change-"
"I know," Lita cut him off before he could finish that statement. "I know." She paused for a moment before continuing. "I'm sorry for waking you up. You can go back to sleep, I'm fine." She walked past John and out of the room, but he grabbed her arm which stopped her in her tracks and she yanked her arm out of her hold.
John cringed at how he forgot how she was going to react especially after whatever nightmare she might have had about Matt. "Sorry, I-"
Lita turned around to face John and shook her head. "No. It was just out of surprise, you're fine. Was there something that you needed?"
"Are you sure you're okay?" Lita didn't say anything in response and it looked like she was about to walk away again, but John continued before she could do so. "You know you can talk to me of something is bothering you, right?"
No I can't, Lita thought to herself before speaking out loud. "I know."
"And if you don't want to talk to me, then you can always talk to Dr. Williams."
"I spoke to him yesterday, I don't need to talk to him every day." Unlike her friends, her therapist actually knew about her visit to Matt.
John let out a sigh and nodded. "I know, it's just-"
"I know," was all Lita said before it fell into silence between the two. The woman was about to leave the room once again, but, just like before, John stopped her.
"I'm off for the next couple of days so I was thinking we could go out today. I mean, you're always at home and you hardly leave the house so I was thinking we could get out and have some fun. You know, clear your head and stuff."
Lita stayed quiet and John was about to speak again, but she spoke up. "Can we go to the shooting range?" She continued after the confused look on John's face. "I have been wanting to go for a while, it makes me feel better."
John hesitantly nodded. "Okay. That's not what I meant, but if that's what you want to do."
"Yea just for like an hour or something and then we can see where the rest of the day takes us."
"Okay," was all John said. Lita simply smiled in response before finally walking out of the room with John following behind and going back into his own room while she went to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
A couple of hours later and John and Lita were at an arcade. They probably spent an hour at the shooting range where Lita looked like she pulled every trigger with tons and tons of anger. The man thought that after the shooting range, the arcade could be a great place for the woman to just loosen up and have some fun and not think about anything for the time being. Fortunately for him, he was correct in his assumption while the two found themselves in a game of air hockey. He learned that she was just as competitive as he.
"I'm kicking your butt!" Lita exclaimed as she made another point against John who rolled his eyes.
"You're only winning by two points, I would hardly call that kicking my butt."
Lira shrugged. "I don't care, I would and that's all that matters."
"Yea yea," John said as he was able to make the score closer. "And now you're only winning by one."
"We'll just see about that," Lita said as they continued the rest of the game with occasional comments. "Next point wins." She placed the puck in the middle and hit it with the striker. She, made the mistake of looking up and completely froze when she felt like she saw Matt. Of course it wasn't her ex-boyfriend but whoever the other man was looked alot like Matt from behind.
"I win!" John exclaimed before looking up to see that Lita looked like she just saw a ghost. He followed her gaze and was confused when he simply saw a bunch of people walking in and out of the place. He looked back over at Lita who was as still as a statue. He walked over to her and placed a hand in her shoulder which made her jump back and scream which was loud enough for only those nearby to hear. "Hey, it's just me," John said, repeating his words from earlier that day. "What happened?"
"I... I thought... I thought... I thought I saw him, but I know... I know it's not him because he's... it's not him. I know. I just... I mean, I saw him, so I... I don't know why."
John was more so confused by one thing in particular that she just said. "What do you mean you saw him?"
"Shit," Lita muttered under her breath as she looked down at the ground when she realized she kind of just revealed to John that she paid Matt a little visit. She looked back up at John before speaking out loud. "Um, I might have went to see Matt a few days ago."
John didn't say anything for a moment, trying to figure out if he wasn't just hearing things. "It's to loud in here, let's continue this outside." Lita merely nodded as she followed after John to his car.
Once they were in the car, Lita finally told him the truth about visiting Matt so she could see with her own eyes that he was locked behind bars.
"I would have went with you if you told me you wanted to go," John said after Lita finished her story.
Lita shook her head. "You would have tried to stop me."
"No," John shook his head. "I actually wouldn't have done that. I understand why you feel like you had to go. You felt like it would have helped you just move on with your life if you actually saw for yourself that hr was locked up."
Lita snorted. "But it obviously didn't."
John shrugged. "Maybe not now, but it will later. You were strong enough to go face him yourself so I know you'll be able to get through this. Only you don't have to go through this alone. I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you."
Lita nodded. "I know. You're always there for me when I need you and even when I don't think I need you and I'm really thankful for that, but..." she trailed off and shook her head not wanting to finish that statement. She didn't want him to know how him being there for her actually scared. She didn't want him to know the fact that she trusted him so much scared her. The fact that he felt safe with him scared her.
"But what?"
Lita shook her head, looking straight ahead of her instead of at John. "Nothing, can we just go home now?"
"Okay," John said before he was just about to start the car. But before he could turn on the ignition, he pulled the keys out and turned back to look over at Lita who was still avoiding eye contact. "Since you told me the truth, I think it's time I did the same as well."
That earned him a confused Lita's attention as she looked away from in front of her and towards John. "What's up? What are you talking about?"
"I think you're really great," John began to say. "I like... you're really... I mean... you... I... and..." he shook his head not knowing why this was really difficult. Maybe telling her how he felt in the car wasn't a bright choice but he something overcame him and he knew if he didn't do it now, he would probably just drag it along even more.
Just by the way John was talking, stuttering, and behaving, Lita had a feeling she knew where this was going and she wasn't sure she likes it. Maybe she could have liked it, but she knew she wasn't ready to hear what he was about to reveal to her.
"My hands are sticky," Lita interrupted before John could continue. She opened the car door, "I need to wash my hands," before getting out and walking back towards the arcade.
"Damn it," John said to himself since he was the only one left in the car. He was sure he scared her off and that definitley wasn't his intention. Maybe he should have waited a little while longer.
Meanwhile, Lita made it into the bathroom of the arcade. She knew if John had followed after her he wouldn't have went inside the bathroom after her so she knew she would be able to get a few moments by herself in there. She really hoped he wouldn't touch the subject again. She wasn't naive, she knew how John felt about her. Afterall, she did hear him basically tell Dawn a while ago that he did like her more than a friend. And well, Lita was sure she felt the same about him like he did about her. She just knew she wasn't ready to do anything about it. She just needed some time.
After a while, Lita finally made it back to the car to find that John was still there. She got into the car and closed the door before buckling her seat belt. She took a deep breath and looked over at John who looked over at her at the same time with the two also speaking at the same time.
"Lita-"
"John-"
"Can I go first?" Lita asked before John could say anything else. He nodded so she continued. "Look John, um, what you were about to say, please don't. I'm sorry, but I'm not ready for that right now and I just need some time, okay?"
John was surprised to learn that Lita knew what he was about to say to her a few minutes ago. He was careful to hide how he really felt about her until he felt she was ready to hear it. But apparently he was wrong on both counts.
"Okay. Lita, I'm sorry if-"
"Don't be," Lita interjected. "You have nothing to be sorry about. Just so you know... um... I like... um... feelings are mutual." The last part came out as a whisper, but John was able to hear her clearly. He just decided it was better not to respond to that because it was clear she didn't want to talk about it right now.
"Well, just so you know, I will wait for when you are ready," was all John said as he started the car and began to drive away.
The whole car ride back home was spent in silence. Both were thinking that this wasn't as awkward as they thought it would be especially after Lita ran off while John first tried to tell her how he felt. Well, he still didn't get to tell her how he felt, but at least she kind of knew and told him she felt the same.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for the reviews. Hope you liked the chapter. :)
