Life during a war
Chapter 37: Work
I wake up to Tobias kissing me, I kiss him back, with passion. We pull away when we need air, and when we remember that our friends are in the next room.
"Good morning." He says, smiling.
"It is a good morning, isn't it? We are going to work today, aren't we?"
"Yup. Do you want to get ready and sneak out before anyone else wakes up?" I nod in response and we get out of bed and get ready as quietly as we can.
It is eight o'clock when we are done and we know none of them are going to be awake. We find out we're right when we enter the living room and find them all sleeping in various places.
We sneak out of the apartment and walk to Max's old office, where we should find everything we need.
It's huge.
The office I mean.
There's a large desk with a desk chair which looks big and comfortable. There's a large book shelf along with a cabinet full of notes and things along one wall. There's a sofa along the one opposite to that. There's a coffee table in the centre of the room. There's a fridge/freezer.
It's amazing.
I take a seat on the sofa because my feet are killing me already.
Tobias goes through the drawers in the desk and pulls out a set of keys.
"Do you want to go and find an apartment?" He asks.
I nod excitedly and he comes over, helping me stand. We leave the room, hand in hand. Him leading the way to the leaders' apartments, which are just around the corner. Convenient.
We start at the front of the set of apartments and look around them, but none of them are taking our fancy so far.
That is, until we get to the last one, the one furthest away from the offices.
It's beautiful.
It has two floors.
Downstairs there is a large living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a utility room, and an office which could easily be turned into a play room. We also have a downstairs toilet. And a reasonably sized gym. The living room has a large balcony as well, it has deck chairs and a garden table, with four chairs around it. There is even a barbeque. Then upstairs there are five bedrooms, all of them are large and the master bedroom is the biggest one. All of the bedrooms have en-suites of a good size. The master bedroom has a balcony, it's large but not as big as the one downstairs. There is also a large bathroom that can be used for guests.
The apartment is amazing.
"This is it. This is our new home." I say, smiling.
Tobias nods and wraps his arms around me from behind, his hands coming to rest on my bump.
"This is our home." He whispers in awe.
"I'm hungry." I say.
"Do you want me to go to the cafeteria and grab us some food?"
I nod.
"What do you want?"
"Chocolate cake. Peanut butter. A bacon sandwich. And some salted crisps."
"Okay, why don't you make yourself comfortable? Watch some TV? I'll be back in a bit." He says.
I nod and he helps me onto the sofa and passes me the remote control to the TV before planting a kiss on my lips and leaving our new home.
…
It is one o'clock now and Tobias and I are in Max's old office, discussing things.
"So, what are we going to do about the initiates and their jobs? My mum also needs a job because she's staying here. And an apartment. In fact, they all need apartments." I say.
"I know, we have to sort that out. There should be plenty of jobs available. The good Dauntless are the only ones that are left here, the traitor ones were also put under memory serum and left with the factionless. We need to gather all the new Dauntless together and see what jobs they want, we'll have to get your mum here as well. We have plenty of apartments going as well."
"Who are the left over Dauntless initiates that passed?"
"There's Christina, Will, Uriah, Marlene, and Lynn. Peter is still in the Bureau with no memory. I think the other three were traitor Dauntless so we only have those five and your mum, Amar, George and Zoe that need jobs and apartments. We need to figure out what places need the most people and see if any of them want those jobs. We won't make them work anywhere they don't want to but at least half of Dauntless were traitors and we had a pretty big population so that means we've lost a lot of staff missing. But everyone who is still here is going back to their normal jobs starting today, except me because this is my job now. Hana said she's going back to her old job as well."
"What about old people? I don't see many of those around here."
"Well, when you reach the age of forty five you have to retire and they don't really hang around, most of them go to be factionless because they have nothing to do with their lives so a lot of them are probably gone. But if there are any left then if any are still able to work then they can. I think it's stupid though, that you have to retire at that age, I mean, unless you're a leader. People should get to work for as long as they want to."
"Maybe we can make that happen. We need to come up with new rules anyway so that could be one of them. You can work for as long as you want to." I suggest.
"Yeah, we'll go over the new rules another time though. Right now we need to call our friends and your mum and tell them to come here so we can sort out jobs and apartments. Max has a list of apartments that were free before the war so we can give them those ones, a lot of them are near where we now live as well. The keys to them are in the drawer. He also has a list of jobs that were available but there are a lot more of them now so we can probably give them any job they want."
I nod and pick up the phone that is on the coffee table so we can discuss these things.
They get here in half an hour and are all in awe of the office.
"When do we get to see your apartment?" Uriah asks.
"Later. Right now we have to discuss where you're all going to be working and living." Tobias says.
They all sit down and we spend an hour talking about where they want to work and we give them keys to their apartment. Christina and Will are sharing one. So are Marlene and Uriah. Amar and George are going to share. Lynn, Zoe and my mum are having their own apartments.
Christina is going to work as a nurse/midwife.
Will is going to work in the control room, where Tobias used to work.
Uriah is going to be an initiate trainer and a police officer.
Marlene is also going to be a nurse/midwife.
Lynn is also going to be an initiate trainer, as well as a tattoo artist in the tattoo parlour with Tori and Bud.
My mum is going to be a nurse/midwife. She already has some training.
Zoe is going to be working in the tattoo parlour.
Amar is going to be a police officer, and initiate trainer.
George is going to be an accountant. Someone who sorts out all the points we get.
"Great, so you all start work tomorrow. I will call your new employers now. Tris, why don't you show them our apartment?" Tobias says.
"Okay. Come on guys." I say, easing myself up.
I lead my friends out of the office and to the new apartment that Tobias and I share.
I show them around and they are in awe of the place, but more in awe than they were when they saw the office.
"It's amazing." Christina says.
"We have to make you a nursery!" Marlene yells, her voice filled with excitement.
"Okay, the nursery is going to be the room next to the master bedroom." I inform them.
"We have to go and get some stuff. You're having a boy, right?" Shauna says.
I nod and they all leave the apartment.
I laugh to myself and sit on the sofa, watching TV again.
Tobias comes home five minutes later and looks confused when he only sees me.
"Where are they?" He asks.
"Getting some stuff so they can decorate the nursery for us." I say, smiling.
"Oh, okay."
He joins me on the sofa and we watch TV, even when the others arrive, along with everyone else who were at work earlier, and they go upstairs to decorate the nursery.
They are still up there when we go to dinner. And when we come home with food for them. And when we go to bed they are still at it.
Man, it better be good.
Hey Ravens, how are you?
I will update as soon as I can.
