Kaya's POV
-Saturday, 5 April-
"What are you doing tomorrow?" Tyler asked me as we walked down the aisle in Target.
"Um, nothing as of right now. Why?" I asked as I threw a bottle of nail polish remover in the basket I was carrying.
"I wanted to film a video." He said as he stopped to pick up a small bottle of mouthwash. He handed it to me and I placed it in the basket.
"What kind of video?"
"Innuendo Bingo. I've noticed that your channel has been mainly vlogs and not many other types of videos for the past few weeks." He said and I shrugged.
"I haven't felt like doing any challenges lately." I told him. "I like my videos and doing vlogs."
"I do too, you're vlogs are cute. Don't get me wrong. But, I feel like a challenge is long overdue. We can do Innuendo Bingo on my channel and another challenge on yours."
I guess Tyler was right. I haven't done a challenge since Playlist, and that wasn't even on my channel. I was going to wait a few more days until the twelfth so Sawyer and I could do our videos, but when the opportunity presents itself to do something, I never pass it up.
"I'll be at your place around two. I want to make a few mixes first." He nodded. We continued to chat about random things as we walked around Target, throwing things in the basket as we went. When we were done, we paid for our things and went our separate ways. As I was driving back to my apartment, I saw a man sitting on the sidewalk. He looked rough to say the least. I pulled over and parked a few yards down from where he was sitting. I reached into one of the Target bags and pulled out a box of granola bars, a few apples, and a few Gatorade bottles. I got out and locked my car and began walking towards him.
"Excuse me, sir." I said once I reached him. He looked up at me and squinted. "Would you like some food and drinks?" I asked and he nodded.
"Yes, please." He said.
"May I sit down?" I gave me a wary glance, probably confused as to why I would want to spend my afternoon with him.
"Go ahead." I nodded and sat down next to him.
"I have granola bars, apples, and some Gatorade. It's not much but—"
"This is more than plenty, hon." He said with a small smile and took the box of granola bars from me. He opened them and pulled one out. I set the apples and Gatorade between us. "Thank you."
"It's not a problem." I told him sincerely. "What's your name?"
"Carl." He told me through a mouth full of granola.
"Well Carl, I'm Kaya." I said. He turned to look at me and crumpled up the wrapper.
"You don't have to stay." He said gravely. "I don't want you to feel obligated to do so. I'll understand if you leave."
"Is this where you normally stay?" I asked and he nodded. "Where do you go during bad weather?"
"There's a shelter a few miles down the road. But I don't go there unless the weather gets really bad." Carl says as he picks up an apple and takes a bite from it. "There are a lot of fights there. A man as old as me can't be around those fights. I don't want to end up getting hurt."
"I can understand that." I said. I wouldn't want to be around fights either if I were him. He looks to be around seventy, but it's hard to pinpoint his age due to the facial hair.
"Drugs." He said. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at him. "That's what caused me to be homeless."
"Oh, I'm sorry." I didn't really know what to say if I'm being honest.
"It's okay. It's my fault. I figured you were going to ask."
"Not at all. I didn't want to be rude." He shook his head.
"I'm okay with it. It was a mix of drugs actually. And alcohol. It started in my late twenties with drinking. In my early thirties, I was introduced to marijuana. And you know what they say about pot being a gateway drug. It got to the point where I couldn't pay my mortgage and I wouldn't show up for work. I began couch hopping after getting kicked out by my wife." He said with a pained expression on his face.
"How old are you?"
"Sixty-three, sixty-four next month." I nodded and shifted on the sidewalk, my butt having gone numb from being in the same position on the hard concrete.
"Do you have any kids?" I asked and he smiled.
"I have two beautiful children, Amber and David." He said. "I haven't seen them in thirty years, though."
"That's too bad." I said and picked at the frayed hem of my jeans. "Have you ever been placed in a treatment facility?"
"Yes, but I refused treatment and left. I couldn't trust anyone, my withdrawals were too bad and they didn't know how to handle them. I'd lash out on staff." He said with a sad chuckle. "I'm sure the staff was relieved when they saw that I checked myself out."
"Do you still do drugs?"
"Not anymore. No one gives me enough money to go get drugs, which I'm thankful for. I haven't touched anything in two years."
"That's good, that's really good." I told him with a small smile. "Have you tried to get in contact with your wife?"
"No, I don't even know if she still lives in California anymore." I could tell that he missed his wife, and kids, dearly. It broke my heart to see this man sitting on the sidewalk. He deserves another chance. We talked for a while. I don't for how long exactly, but the sun had started to set, blanketing the sky in hues of pink, orange, and purple.
"I could help?" I asked him after a little while. "I mean, I wouldn't be able to track your wife or kids down or anything, but I could help you find housing and get back on your feet."
"That's fine sweetie, I don't need you doing anything for me out of pity." He said and I shook my head.
"It's not out of pity. I think you deserve another chance. Everyone does." I said and he put his half eaten apple in his lap.
"You'd really help me?" Carl asked and I nodded. "You must be an angel sent down to Earth by God himself."
"No, I just like to help people." I said with a shrug. "Will you be here tomorrow?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"I'll be back around nine, okay?" He nodded and I stood up.
"Thank you for the food." He said and I nodded. I walked back to my car and drove back to my apartment. After putting everything away and changing into sweats and an old shirt, I started searching for transitional housing for Carl. It was not an easy thing to do though. None of the ones that I saw were rated highly and the ones that were, were private ones for celebrities that couldn't get their shit together. After searching for a few hours I gave up and called my dad.
"And why do you need to know this?" He asked skeptically.
"For a friend." I told him.
"There's one in Oceanside that's pretty nice. I can reserve a place for your friend for you if you give me their name."
"Carl." I said and I could hear the faint sound of him typing.
"What's his last name, Kaya?"
"I don't know his last name. I didn't ask." He sighed and continued typing.
"Kaya, you're not friends with this person, are you?"
"No, but he's a nice guy. He needs a second chance."
"How many times do your mother and I have to tell you that you can't help everyone you meet?"
"At least a hundred more times."
"I'll send you the address of the facility. Please, get some sleep. I love you."
"Love you too, dad." I said and hung up. I turned my laptop off and walked into my kitchen. I opened one of the cabinets and pulled down the jar of Nutella that was nestled in the back corner. I took a spoon out of the drawer and unscrewed the lid. As I was about to devour the Nutella, someone knocked on my door.
Why is it that I'm always in my kitchen when someone decides to knock? I asked myself and placed the spoon and jar on the counter. I walked over to the door and opened it.
"Hello, Sawyer. And Hitch." I said. I opened the door wider so they could walk inside. "What brings you here?"
"Hitch was whining at the door. I thought he had to go out but he ran to your door and sat down. And then he started whining when I tried to get him away from the door." Sawyer said and I laughed.
"Looks like Hitch likes me more than you." I said jokingly and Sawyer rolled his eyes. I knelt down and picked Hitch up.
"How was hanging out with Tyler?" He asked me as we sat down on the couch.
"It was nice." I said as I started to pet Hitch. "After we left Target I met this homeless guy. We talked for a while. I'm helping him get back on his feet."
"Kaya, do you know how dangerous that could be?" He asked me and I nodded.
"Sawyer, I'd like to think that I'm a pretty good judge of character." I told him.
"Well, you did go out with Sam… So…" He said.
"Besides that." I sighed.
"I'm just worried, you know? I don't want you to get hurt." He said and kissed my temple.
"I know. But, he's a good guy. Oh, and can I maybe get a few things of yours? Like shirts and pants?" I asked him.
"For the homeless guy?" He asked and I nodded. "Sure, babe. Anything for you."
-Sunday, 6 April-
"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" Sawyer asked as I tied my shoes.
"Do you really want to come with me?" I asked, starting to get annoyed with him constantly asking the same question.
"Yes. I'd feel better if I went along." He said and I sighed.
"Fine. But be nice. He's been through a lot." I told him and he nodded. We walked out of my apartment and went down to my car. We got in and I drove down to the same street I saw Carl on yesterday. I parked in the same spot and gathered the clothes that Sawyer had brought over. We got out and I led him over to Carl.
"Carl, this is Sawyer. Sawyer, this is Carl." They shook hands and Carl stood up. "I brought you some clothes to change into." I said and handed them to him.
"Thank you." He said and took them. He walked into a nearby alley to change. After a few minutes he emerged. "The shirt's a bit tight." He said as he tugged at it.
"Sorry about that, man." Sawyer said. Carl waved him off.
"Well, we should get going. It's a bit of a drive." I told them and they followed me to my car. Carl got in the back and Sawyer got in the front. As I pulled back onto the street, Sawyer plugged my phone in and turned the volume down.
"What song is this?" Carl asked.
"I'm not sure, Sawyer can you turn it up a bit?" He nodded and did so. After a few seconds of listening to it I was able to identity it.
"This is 'Versace'. I can change it if you'd like." I told Carl. I looked at him through the rearview mirror and saw him shake his head.
"It's catchy." He said and started bobbing his head to the beat. I chuckled and returned my focus to the road. During the ride, Carl and Sawyer started talking about Carl's life and I think Sawyer started to understand why I had this intense desire to help Carl. As we pulled into the parking lot, Carl looked through the window at the facility.
"This place is nice." He said and I nodded. After I parked we got out and Sawyer and I walked him in. We got him checked in and the staff got him situated.
"Excuse me, miss." The receptionist called me over to the front desk. "Are you related to that man?" He asked and I shook my head.
"Well, is there any family that we can call once he gets out of treatment?"
"No, but you can notify me." I told him and he nodded. I gave him my name and number and walked back over to where Sawyer was waiting by the door.
"Tyler has been texting you nonstop." He said once I reached him.
"I'm filming a couple videos with him today. He's probably making sure that I don't back out." I said and took my phone from his outstretched hand. I unlocked it and scrolled through my messages.
"Yeah, that's what he messaged me about. It's fine. I just hope the traffic doesn't get too bad on the way back." I told him as we walked out and to my car.
"I'm sure it'll be fine." Sawyer said as we got in.
"And you said it'd be fine." I said as we came to a halt in the middle of the highway. Cars were backed up for miles, and I was not in the mood to deal with people and their lack of driving skills.
"Well, I can't predict the future. And no one said he had to go to a facility in Oceanside."
I ignored his comment and picked my phone up. I scrolled through my contacts and tapped on Tyler's name to call him. I rolled the windows up and placed my phone to my ear.
"Where are you?" Was the first thing that Tyler said when he answered.
"In traffic." I told him and inched forward.
"You live twenty minutes from me."
"Yes, I know that, but I'm not near my house. I'm coming back from doing something in Oceanside."
"How long will you be?"
"I'll probably be there in an hour or so."
"Okay, I'll see you then."
The rest of the drive was torturously slow, and I wished Tyler hadn't wanted to do the videos today. Or I could've told him I'd be there later than two. But of course I had to be a good person and help someone.
"At least we're almost there." Sawyer said as he switched radio stations. I nodded and changed lanes quickly, making sure I didn't miss the turn to Tyler's.
"I have no idea how long this'll take. I know we're doing Innuendo Bingo, but I have no idea what the other video will be." I told him as we came to a stop at a red light.
"That's fine. I'll just chill while you guys do your thing."
"Or you could be a gem and find clips for the Bingo video." I told him with a wide smile. He rolled his eyes and nodded. "That way there won't be any bias."
.
"Finally, you're here." Tyler said as we walked into his apartment. "I've had Troye, Zoe, and a lot of other people send me clips for the Innuendo Bingo video."
"What's the other video going to be?" I asked him as I made my way to the couch.
"I haven't figured that out, but since Sawyer is here he can figure something out."
"I'm just here because she didn't take me home." Sawyer told him. "I'm not filming with you, so I'm going to be sitting over there watching you guys."
Tyler shrugged and pulled me over to where he had set up the chairs for the video.
"As you can see, I purchased a kiddie pool for this. And since it's so small, we will be right up on each other." He said. "I hope you don't mind."
"Not at all. Let's get this started!"
Almost an hour later, and about thirty sound bites and two gallons of water, Tyler and I were finally done with Innuendo Bingo. And I have to be honest… It's not that great. Wet clothes just feel disgusting, especially wet jeans.
"I think we should have filmed the other video first, Tyler…" I groaned as I stood up from my chair. My Vans were sopping, as well as my shirt and pants. Tyler's clothes were in the same shape as mine.
"This is very true. It didn't even register that we'd get this wet." Tyler said as he also stood up. "Have you thought about another challenge we could do?"
"No, have you?" I asked him and he shook his head.
"You could do 'Twenty Questions.'" Sawyer suggested. Tyler and I looked at each other and shrugged.
"Sure." We said in unison. It's simple, and I'd rather do a simple game like this, rather than some elaborate one.
"Can I borrow some sweats and a shirt or something?" I asked Tyler and he nodded. He motioned for me to follow him to his bedroom. Once we were both inside, he shut the door and turned to face me.
"I have a few questions for you," he started. "And you don't have to answer them, but it'd be greatly appreciated if you did." He had a glint in his eye that was undecipherable.
"What?" I asked skeptically.
"Have you two done the dirty yet?" He asked. I wanted to be shocked at his bluntness, but it's Tyler Oakley we're talking about. I'm pretty sure my jaw touched the floor, though. I stammered for a few seconds before I was finally able to form a complete sentence without sounding like an idiot.
"Tyler, what the hell?" I asked him. "You can't just ask people that. It's personal. And private."
"I don't care, just answer me." He whined. "I wanna know!"
"No."
"'No' as in you don't want to tell me, or 'no' as in you haven't?" He asked me.
"The second one." I told him and shrugged.
"What?" Now it was his turn for his jaw to touch the floor. "You're telling me that you haven't climbed that tree yet? Have you seen him?"
"Yes, I've seen him." I rolled my eyes.
"Then why haven't you done anything?!"
"Because, we haven't been together for that long, that's why. Is it a crime that I want to make sure that we'll actually work before we get in too deep?" I asked him and he giggled.
"That's what she said." I groaned and shook my head. "But, no it's not a crime. I'm just a bit disappointed. I wanted all the juicy details." He said after composing himself.
"Well, guess what? I'm never telling you." I told him and he sighed.
"Fine, whatever. What about the Big Three?" He asked.
"What about it?"
"Have you said it?"
"I mean, it was implied. He said, and I quote, 'I am in love with you and there's nothing you can do to change that.' He didn't say it outright, though." I told him. "It's not a big deal though." I said with a shrug.
"Not a big deal?! Kaya, we are talking about Sawyer! He's probably too afraid to say it explicitly!" He whisper shouted. "Do you love him?"
"Of course I do, Tyler."
"Then just say it and see how he reacts. If it's been implied, then it's going to be something that he's going to say to you at least fifty times a day until you both die." Tyler said.
"Jesus Christ, fine! Can we just change and film this video now?" I asked him and he nodded.
"Don't think about it too much. Just say it casually. Like at the end of a phone conversation. Don't text him though. That'll just be dumb." Tyler rambled as he tossed me a pair of sweat pants and a clean shirt. We changed quickly and rejoined Sawyer in the living room.
"What took you guys so long?" Sawyer asked. He looked up from his phone and slid it into the pocket of his jean jacket.
"We were making out. You know, the usual." Tyler said with a shrug.
"You're not funny." Sawyer muttered and I chuckled.
"You have nothing to worry about." I told him and sat on the couch next to Tyler.
-Saturday, 12 August-
Sawyer's POV
I groaned as the alarm on my phone repeated for the third time. I reached under my pillow to pull the phone out and finally turned the alarm off. As I got up, I stretched, causing my joints to pop. I felt tense, and nervous. Why, though? It's just a video. It's not like we're doing this at a meet up.
Get over it, Sawyer. You being nervous will just make Kaya nervous. Or more nervous than she already is.
I got dressed quickly and made my way next door. My knuckles only met the door once before the door was practically ripped open. My shirt was grabbed roughly and I was pulled inside.
"I told you to be here an hour ago." Kaya said as she paced frantically in front of me, and I instantly felt horrible. She was freaking out.
"I'm sorry. I didn't get much sleep last night." I told her and she sighed, running her hands through her unruly, curly hair.
"It's fine. I just kept thinking that by you not being here that you were rethinking this whole thing." I shook my head.
"Not at all." I told her and kissed the top of her head. "I love your hair by the way. You shouldn't straighten it as much."
"Thanks." She said with a small smile.
There goes that word again. I've probably said the word 'love' at least one hundred times since Playlist. But not in the form of 'I love you.' No, I'm too scared to say it. I don't know why, I just am. I shouldn't be. It's just Kaya, and I'm pretty sure she feels the same way.
"What are you thinking about?" Kaya asked me, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"I love you." I blurted and clamped my mouth shut.
"Okay." She said, her face was expressionless and my heart sank. I looked down at my feet and frowned.
"I shouldn't have—"
"I love you, too." She said quietly. I looked at her and smiled.
Thank god she said it back.
"Let's do this." I told her and she nodded. She led me over to the couch and turned the camera on.
"We can do this. It's going to be fine." I told her as she sat down. I kissed her temple and held her hand.
"Okay." She said with a nod and turned to the camera.
Tyler's POV
Hmm… Kaya posted a new video.
I clicked on the link in the tweet and waited as the video loaded on my phone. When it did, Kaya and Sawyer were both sitting on a couch, looking at the camera. And they looked scared as hell.
"Hey guys! It's Kaya, and I'm here today with Sawyer Hartman. Today's video is pretty different." She said and Sawyer nodded.
"Yeah, we will be doing another challenge on my channel following this one." He said. "So as you can see, the title of this video is pretty self explanatory. I will be answering questions about Kaya. And on my channel, she will be answering questions about me."
"I've taken all of the questions from Twitter and Tumblr. Either they were questions that you guys sent me or I saw them somewhere else. Let's get this started." Kaya said.
They smiled and the screen faded to black. White text swirled onto the screen. It read:
Do You Really Know Me: Boyfriend/Girlfriend Edition
That faded and Sawyer and Kaya were once again on the screen. Kaya had a few index cards in her hands.
"What's my birthday?" She asked.
"That's an easy one. April 22nd."
"Correct. When did I first get started with music?"
Sawyer hesitated and groaned.
"That's a trick question. You started young with different instruments but became really invested with production when you were 15."
"Aw, you actually remembered that?" Kaya asked with a small smile. Sawyer nodded. "What would I be doing now if music didn't work out?"
"You'd be playing soccer, professionally." Sawyer answered. "But you'd be like that one chick that's on her school's football team." Kaya sighed and nodded.
"Yeah. I can't play on a women's soccer team." She shuddered slightly. "I get 'too aggressive'." Kaya rolled her eyes and sifted through the cards.
"I almost peed myself when I met who for the first time?"
"Uh... Lady Gaga?" Sawyer's brows furrowed. He looked and sounded unsure of his answer.
"Nope. I almost peed myself when I met Tyler Oakley. I'm not even lying. I met him shortly after moving to LA and I walked into the restaurant and was so shocked to see him there."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I'm fine with meeting 'celebrities'. Moving on... How many siblings do I have?"
"Two. One twin, and one younger brother."
"Yup. If I were to only watch one show for the rest of my life, what would it be?"
"Orphan Black because it's literally the only thing you watch anyway. Well, besides Catfish and Harry Potter movies."
"This is true..." Kaya nodded and dropped the index card to the floor. "Of all the places I've been, which has been my favorite?"
"Florida because the people are nice. And that's where I'm from." Sawyer grinned widely and Kaya rolled her eyes.
"And the last question for the video is..." She shuffled through the remaining cards for a question. "What did you help me find when I first moved in?"
"Oh! A comforter set because you forgot to bring yours!" Sawyer practically yelled. He looked at the camera. "You see, I was on my way to Target when I met Kaya and she asked me where the nearest store that sold bedding was, and I told her to follow me to Target. The. She asked for my help and that was the start of a beautiful friend slash relationship."
"Yeah. I also found out that Sawyer literally hoards sugary cereal. Well, that's it for this video. Make sure to heck out Sawyer's channel for the second video. Also, be sure to like and share this video. Leave a comment below suggesting a video that you'd like me to film. Have a nice day!"
The video cut to Kaya's normal end screen and I exited the video. I was happy for them, genuinely happy. They're adorable together and they're going to be the new 'It Couple' of YouTube. I can just feel it. As I got up from the couch, my phone buzzed in my hand.
Connor: HAVE YOU SEEN KAYA'S NEW VIDEO?!
Tyler: Yes... Why?
C: I never saw it coming!
T: Are you blind?
C: I mean, I never really hung out with them when they were both together...
T: That's true
I exited my messages and opened Twitter and scrolled through my timeline, as well as Kaya and Sawyer's mentions. The tweets all consisted of the same thing. And Kawyer had started to trend in the US. But as I continued scrolling through the tweets, I started to laugh at the fans. People were so bent out of shape that their ships didn't work out. People honestly shipped Kaya and Connor, Kaya and Joey, and Kaya and Caspar. Kaya and Caspar were never in a video together... I don't even think they've ever talked to each other...
I went back to my messages and typed out a text to Kaya.
T: People are going ape over the video.
K: I know. I'm avoiding all social media platforms for that specific reason.
T: Why?
K: Because there are some people who'll be like 'awww cute' and then there will be people who'll be like 'ew, gross. Why?' and I don't want to see the negative comments.
T: You worry too much about what people think. You shouldn't. People should let you be great. Their opinions don't matter.
K: I know, Sawyer tells me that all the time.
T: Well maybe you should listen to your boyfriend.
A/N: Kind of a sucky place to leave off... eh? Next chapter will be up shortly. This has been revised, rewritten, and re-uploaded... so that's why majority of it is familiar.
