I don't own Legend of Zelda.

We spent the entirety of the next morning in the shrine. The sun was high when we finally emerged. I wore only Jorn's vest from the night before with a belt. Jorn's horse and our guards waited loyally by the waterfall.

The ride back to the fortress was quiet, but my husband and I didn't need to speak. It was so strange to consider myself married. So many events had happened in the last few days.

The sway of my hips was a testament to all who saw us. The men and women grinned at us in passing. We found our fathers in the mess hall. Kylar commented, "I told you she has no personal boundaries. Though that is a creative way to wear that. No doubt, it will be a fashion trend before the end of the month."

I helped myself to Kylar's plate. "Your teasing has no end."

Hanaka asked, "Did you say your vows?"

Jorn nodded around his full mouth. When he swallowed he asked, "How's the other ceremony plans going?"

"The hunting party left this morning. Whenever I receive their falcon, we can start the ritual."

Jorn nodded again. "Do the others know?"

Kylar answered while Hanaka ate, "They woke late, but yes. Given the circumstances, Tonya relented her orders for complete rest. They've been lightly training since noon."

"We should join them." Jorn stood. "I'll help you pick out a sword, Link."

Hanaka and Kylar stood as well. "We have a wedding gift for you. It's in our apartment."

Back in our rooms, Hanaka went to the weapon rack. "I commissioned these for you when I saw you'd lost the master sword, Link. I know they won't replace her, but to have another weapon type would be wrong. You are a swords-woman."

He lifted a broadsword and a half sword. Taking a stance, he swung them together. Kylar warned, "Not indoors."

Hanaka held out the hilts for me. "They're lightweight and perfectly balanced for your size."

I tested a few swings. Kylar sighed, "What did I just say?"

I sheathed them both and hugged Hanaka. "Thanks, da."

"You'll need to change into protective gear before going to the training field. The wolves are using real weapons." I raised an eyebrow. Kylar nodded toward my room with a doting smile. "I got you something too."

I skipped over then stuck my head back out. With a grin plastered on, I said, "Help me with this, Jorn!"

The armor was made of hardened leather. It was stained black and covered my chest and shoulders going as far as the curve of my hips without being rigid. My tunic had been remade for my current size. The sleeves were lengthened to meet my set of bracers that had been dyed black. Gray pants met black boots and greaves. To finish the look was a blue riding cape the same shade as my father's scarf.

I could hardly wait for Jorn to tie the collar. I leapt back into the living space and spun. "Thank you, papa! Oh goddess, thank you!"

Kylar hugged me from behind. "I thought you might like it. Now go down to the training field and show them your skill. Teach them something I can't."

I twirled out of his arms. My eyes landed on the desk where a gold and silver bracelet lay. It was whole and unbroken. I paused.

The magic wasn't dead. The goddess still believed in me. My father... I walked back to my room. Sef's scarf was still folded on the bedside table. I wrapped it like my father wore it and inhaled the scent.

"Please don't cry, nadara." Jorn held me close. I still didn't understand what it all meant. He suggested, "Let's go to the field."

I nodded and dried my eyes. I offered a smile to our fathers and followed Jorn. He held my hand as we ran. My troubled thoughts were pushed to the back of my mind.

Our team trained against one another. Stephan stood watching and giving orders. He grimaced at them with his arms crossed while he circled. Rashan cried out as Darius knocked his feet out from under him with a staff.

"Don't lose sight of your opponents weapons."

Rashan groaned as he stood. "I know, Stephan. Give it a rest."

Stephan pulled his shirt off and drew his sword. "Come at me, Darius."

"Or you could both fight me."

The boys stepped apart and bowed. I nodded. Rashan asked, "Will they let you fight?"

I looked over my shoulder toward my bodyguards. "I think so."

Gret folded his arms trying not to smirk. Stephan paced toward me. Jorn drew his sword. "You're with me, brother."

Stephan grinned with a head tilt. "Well alright then."

I waved the others to me. "Let's try something different. Follow my lead."

I drew my sword and began the first thing my father had taught me. "The key to a strong offense or defense is footwork. The hylian knights knew this well. They were schooled in the ways of battle.

"The soldiers weren't lucky enough to have their thorough training. My father buried many who were under his command. As your friend, I won't let you share their fate." Nasha tripped beside me. I caught his arm before he fell on his blade. "Slower. You'll get speed in time. I trained morning and night for two months to perfect it."

I stepped in front and faced them. On an exhale, I drew my second sword and moved. Each slash was perfectly executed. No movement was wasted. I flipped sideways and slashed, rotating on the landing and continuing the motion in a devastating spin attack.

When I turned, even Jorn and Stephan had stopped to watch. I stepped back into line. "We'll go slow. Again."

I took Stephan's job of directing them once they had picked up enough to be competent. Jorn and Stephan had joined my line. I noticed Gret trying to signal to me. I looked where he pointed.

A group of young boys had gathered to watch. Several had wooden swords and were trying to copy the wolves. I smiled to myself and walked over. A few gave awkward bows. I bowed at the waist and crouched.

"Hello, young warriors." They offered shy greetings and waved. I was reminded of the kokiri and a wave of nostalgia hit me. "Do you want me to teach you?"

"Yes!" One enthusiastic boy jumped up. The others giggled.

I stood and ruffled his hair. "Alright. Let's form some lines."

I trained the boys with a softer hand than my squad, but most of them had gotten the hang of the basics when I sent them in for supper. A couple of the youngest gave me hugs and they all waved.

I waved back as a sweaty arm draped over my shoulders. I recognized Jorn's body scent. He muttered into my neck, "You're going to be a wonderful mother when we have one of those. Want to make a baby?"

I laughed. "Anytime."

We ate with the team before returning to our room. Hanaka and Kylar were still out. I flopped down on the bed. "Tell me about the warrior ceremony."

Jorn wiped the dried sweat off his neck with a damp rag. "We'll go out with our teacher and he'll give us our final lesson before we stand beside him as equals. Then we will meet the hunters. But you will stay here."

I sat up. "What? No!"

"Yes, nadara." Jorn held my arms, thumbs rubbing silver. "Me and da will be out there alone with only our friends. If something happens to us, it falls to you to lead our people."

"I told you I wouldn't leave your side," I protested.

Jorn kissed my shoulder. "Don't try to trap me, love. Da will agree with me."

A reluctant smile crept across my face. "Your sweet talk won't end the conversation."

"Who said anything about ending it? I'm only delaying until da convinces you I'm right."

I snagged his ear lobe between my teeth and lightly began to suck on it. "You're devious, nadara." I pulled him into bed.

Jorn let out a raspy moan. "Want to make that baby now?"

I wrapped my legs around his. I teased, "Now? After what you said?"

Jorn tucked me under his chin. "I deserved that."

I kissed the side of his throat to show I wasn't angry. "Let's sleep tonight, love. You need your strength if we continue training before you leave."

"No! Let go of me, you bitches!"

I flew out of bed at Hanaka's terrified voice. In the other room, Kylar had his arms locked around Hanaka's chest. "Stay back, Link!"

I hesitated. Jorn went to step around me, but I blocked the doorway with an arm. Kylar struggled to hold Hanaka's writhing form. "Hana! It's me! It's Ky! You need to wak-"

Kylar was thrown over Hanaka's shoulder. The table smashed beneath him. Hanaka was panting, breaths short and labored like a cornered animal. His wrists were held to the side as if restrained.

Kylar rolled to his feet. A long cut bled down the center of his back. Sawdust and splinters clung to the sticky wet trail. I took a step, but Kylar held out a hand waving me back. His voice was must softer, a gentle pleading, as he said, "Hana, listen to me. It's not real."

Hanaka turned his head, searching. "Nabooru? Nabooru, is it really- No! Stop! Nabooru, it's me! I'm your brother!" He screamed in pain. It lasted nearly thirty seconds. When he spoke again, his voice was barely a whimper and his head hung. "No, please no... Nabooru..."

He wavered. Kylar caught him as his knees gave out. They were both crying. "Jorn, help me get him to the couch."

I finally approached. Hanaka's eyes were open and unfocused. I sat with his head in my lap. Jorn knelt on the floor holding Hanaka's hand. Kylar paced behind the couch. A hand covered his mouth. After a moment, I realized I was humming the song of healing. I closed Hanaka's eyes and sung aloud.

At last, Hanaka's breathing settled and he stopped shivering. I paused my song to say, "I need boiling water. Tonya's medicine is in the top drawer of the desk."

I sat with him several more hours before Hanaka opened his eyes. "Link? Where? What are you still doing up?" His eyes widened. "Oh gods, is Kylar... Did I hurt anyone?"

Kylar shook his head. I answered, "No, da. We're alright."

"Thank heavens."

Jorn held Hanaka's hand in both of his. "You called out to Nabooru, da. Why would you remember him?"

Hanaka slowly sat up. He shook his head. "Give me a minute, son."

Kylar reached over the back of the couch. "For once, maybe you shouldn't try to recall the event. You were in so much pain, Hana."

Hanaka shot upright. "Nabooru's still alive! He was there in the colossus. The witches manipulated him with some kind of spell. Ky, he's been trapped there this whole time."

He covered his face and cried. Even when the memory of the witches torture returned, he hadn't seemed this emotionally wrecked. I stood and went to the desk.

The medicinal drink had long since cooled, but I held it out to Hanaka. "This will help you sleep, da. Please take it." His hand shook, but he managed to swallow most of it. I took back the glass and wrapped his arm over my shoulders. "Thank you, da. Now back to bed."

He offered no resistance when I guided him to his room. He sat on the bed. That haunted look was still in his eyes. I stepped back out. "I'll stay with him. Kylar, go get your shoulder looked at."

Jorn asked, "What can I do?"

I nodded toward the crushed table. "Tidy that then try to get some rest."

"Already giving orders," Kylar mumbled as he passed.

I pursed my lips as the door shut behind him. "Actually, go with him, Jorn. He's not his right self either. I'm worried about both of them."

"Will you be safe by yourself?"

"Save your concern for them, love. I'll be fine."

I returned to Hanaka. He was laying half in the bed. I lifted his legs onto the mattress. He complained, "No, Link, I'm-"

"You aren't though, da. I saw how scared and injured you were. Goddess, I-" I covered my face and rubbed my temples. "Don't hide this from me. I hate the idea of you suffering alone."

He stared blankly at the ceiling. A moment of panic hit me before I saw his eyes were shut. I lifted the blanket and kissed his forehead. "Good night, da."

I forced myself to rise when the sun did. In our room, Jorn was stretched over the bed. He looked as tired as I felt. I kissed him awake. "I'm going to fetch some breakfast. Will you wait with da for me?" Jorn nodded and stretched. He kicked the blanket off while I dressed. "Where's Kylar?"

Jorn shook his head. "He fell apart. If I hadn't gone with him, he probably wouldn't have made it to the infirmary. Tonya took him back to their place." His hands reached around my waist. "Did you sleep?"

I closed my eyes. It was tempting to keep them shut and rest. But I couldn't just yet. "I will once I know da will be alright."

In the hall, I closed the door and leaned against it. The guard asked, "Are you well, princess?"

I forced a smile and nodded. These men were unfamiliar. We made small talk to and from the mess hall. When I returned to our apartment, I could hear raised voices from the hall. "You can't hold her back, Jorn. She has as much right to be there as the rest of you."

"I'm not- Why can't you see I'm trying to protect her?"

"Protect me from what?"

The clatter of the tray finally made them notice me. Jorn grimaced. Hanaka folded his arms. "Go on. Tell her the real reason you don't want her to go."

I asked, "Is this about the ceremony?"

"No."

"Yes."

They shared a look. Jorn's was slightly more hostile. Hanaka's jaw twitched impatiently. Jorn groaned and admitted, "The risk is too high. You have to stay behind."

"Is that a command?" My words were cold.

Jorn reached for my hands. "Trust me, nadara. It's safer this way."

"I do trust you, Jorn, but do you trust me? Let me come with you."

Jorn hesitated. That one pause told me everything. I pulled my hands away and grabbed my pack and bow.

"Link, what are-"

I tried to glare, but my eyes stung. I lifted my chin. "Find me when you're ready to tell the truth."

I went to the harem and claimed a couch. The guard said from behind me, "You should sleep."

I pouted, "Did you hear what he told me? Trust, he says! Then he lied to my face. And he had no explanation!"

"I'm sure there's a reason."

"When he's ready, I'll be waiting."

"What happened?"

"...fight with..." The voices drifted in and out. "... she working on?"

I moaned as the woman's voice lost its hazy quality. I woke with a yawn and stretched. My eyes were gritty and my mouth was dry. Folayna smiled at me. "Good afternoon, princess."

"Is it that late already?"

"Just barely," Folayna replied when she rolled her chair over.

The guards had changed while I slept. Tarok and Jachim were back. I asked, "Has Jorn been here?"

I hoped my voice didn't betray me. Jachim answered, "No, but Kylar stopped by. Nasty gash on his shoulder. Said something about seeing Tonya."

So he hadn't told them about Hanaka's latest episode. Folayna rested a hand on Gesine's journal. "What is this?"

I looked down. My forearm was covered in smeared ink. I shook my head. "I wish I knew. I've struggled to decipher the text. It's in an ancient language."

"May I?"

I waved her on. "By all means."

She took the journal and loose pages with my notes. Her eyes darted back and forth with no discernible pattern. "You've actually made quite a bit of progress in the right direction. Only a couple errors in your code."

"My code?"

She pointed to my notes. "The legend to translate the text. I didn't know Gesine could write this language. I need a bigger key. Come, Link."

Folayna didn't wait for me before rolling away with my things. I shouldered my pack and followed. She finally stopped in a tall corridor. The wall was engraved. Incredulously, the caption beneath an incredible mosaic matched the ancient symbols. But this was much longer than the one on my bow.

Folayna began scribbling. Once again, I saw no rhyme or reason. I asked, "Folayna, can you read?"

"I'm nearly illiterate," she answered. Her hand never rested. "But I'm very good at puzzles. I see patterns in shapes where others see words. I should be able to transcribe the meaning in a day or so. Now it's your turn. Write down what I say." She waited for me. "Proceed to the past and enter with a child's pure heart. Travel to the future with the power of silver and reflection."

"That's ominous," I muttered.

"Don't worry, dear. It's just a warning to avoid becoming obsessed with what this world offers. The tribe knows this well. It is why we live the way we do and return our dead to the goddesses with a funeral pyre."

I looked above the inscription. A warrior, I assumed male, wielded a sword and shield. A beam of light reflected off the front of the shield. Folayna wheeled away from me. "I'll send Sharif when I'm done with the journal."

She disappeared around the corner. "A-alright then..." I glanced helplessly at Tarok and Jachim. "Um... Let's go to the pastures."

Tarok nodded. "Shall we cut through the training field?"

Jachim added, "Jorn may be there with your team."

Half of me wanted to search him out, but the rest of me wanted him to come to me first. I nodded. "So be it."

Thankfully, or rather unfortunately, Jorn was nowhere to be seen. I snatched a quiver of arrows. Epona answered my call and I practiced my archery. After a couple hours, I heard a rider approach at high speed.

Tarok and Jachim met him. Stephan called, "Link, you have to come with me! It's Jorn!"

My heart accelerated. Stephan turned the way he came from. I spurred Epona after him. We rode to the west gate and out into the desert. We followed the wall south. I asked, "What happened?"

"Jorn left the fortress late this morning. A patrol noticed him fighting a colony of leevers. They helped him, but instead of returning, he went looking for more. Please, you have to speak to him, Link. He won't listen to anyone else."

We rode nearly five miles. Then I saw him. The shining corpses of dead leevers littered the sand. The precious water evaporated in the heat. He was tired. Jorn's posture had lost its form and his sword dipped so far as to nearly drag through the sand.

A leever snuck up behind him. I fired an arrow. The leever writhed in pain. I leapt off Epona and embedded my swords in it. Stephan eliminated another nearby.

Jorn didn't acknowledge us. He started walking along the wall again. I followed after. "What are you doing?"

"Training," came the fatigued response.

I grabbed his arm. "This isn't training, this is idiocy."

"No one would train me, so I went looking for another." He wasn't meeting my eyes.

I demanded, "We're going back, now."

Jorn planted his feet and refused to budge. "I'm not going back. Not until I'm ready."

"Ready for what?" I nearly screamed in hysterics. "Look at yourself, Jorn! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

"It's a better alternative to the way you looked at me this morning," he mumbled.

I let go of his arm and slapped him. "That's what this is about? Are you punishing yourself because of it? Talk to me! You're scaring me, nadara." He turned to walk away. In a show of desperation, I hugged him from behind. "Tell me why. Please, at least give me that."

"I'm not- I can't..." He fell to his knees in the burning sand.

I rested my head against his back. "I love you, Jorn. Whatever it is, we'll take care of it together."

"How can you trust me when I don't trust myself?" I barely heard his whisper over the wind. "I'm not strong enough to protect you from her."

Guinandora. Her actions were the source of his shattered confidence. But I refused to lie to him. "No. No one can stop her. Once, I thought maybe I could... but it was false hope."

He begged, "Please stay in the fortress. You'll be safe."

"No. I will not cower and hide. If she or the witches or anyone else come for me or the tribe, I will die fighting."

He leaned into me. "I'm scared of her, but I'm terrified of losing you." I held him tighter. Jorn put his face in his hands. "I'm such a fool."

"But you're mine, nadara, fool or otherwise." I kissed his neck. "Come."

Jorn stood and let me lead him to Epona. The whole ride back, he leaned heavily on me. His head rested on my shoulder. Stephan said nothing. He hadn't spoken since Jorn broke his silence. My father's men were waiting at the west gate.

Stephan took Epona and we were followed to the bathing pools. When we were clean and I was convinced Jorn didn't need treating, we fell asleep in a quiet corner.

The alarm woke us. We struggled to disentangle ourselves. At last I was free. "Where are our clothes?"

Jachim chuckled. "Calm down. There are many others to respond before you two." The bells doleful tolling stopped. "See, already taken care of."

"We still need to look into the cause," Jorn replied.

"Those are my boots, love." We traded footwear. In minutes, we were ready.

Jorn took my hand and we ran. The central hall was crammed with warriors. Jorn asked, "What happened?"

A man answered, "Two sheikah were caught trespassing near the border."

Who's with them now?" I asked.

They stepped back to give me space. "Captain Kylar. Someone was sent to find Hanaka, princess."

"Thank you." I led through the men. They allowed us by with minimal effort. The king's office door was cracked open. I saw Kylar standing against the wall.

His voice carried into the hall, "I don't think the alarm's gone off so much recently as the last five years combined. It's really quite bothersome, you know."

Tarok touched my shoulder. "Cover your face, Link. Conceal your identity."

Jorn helped me fix my scarf and we entered. Kylar nodded to his men. Jorn and I stood in the corner. The scarf covered my shock.

The captured sheikah were Zelda and the man who had followed me to the forest. Their faces were uncovered for once. A pile of weapons rested on the table by Kylar. They sat very still with their hands tied behind their backs.

The door was opened as Hanaka entered. I saw disappointment from the hall before he shut the door. He said as he crossed the room, "Explain, Kylar."

Kylar crossed his arms, one leg bent. I couldn't believe he actually felt that casual. "A patrol picked them up at the edge of the field. They'll only speak to you."

The man asked, "Are you the king of the gerudo?"

Hanaka blinked slowly. "I am. This is my captain and general. These are his men. There is no escape for you here. So tell me why two sheikah were snooping around our borders."

Hanaka was at his fiercest. I felt bad for Zelda and her friend. They shared a look. Zelda said, "We wish to arrange a prisoner exchange."

My fathers' eyes met. Zelda licked her lips and risked a glance to Jorn. Kylar began, "You drive a hard bargain. You see, none of the tribe is being held by your clan. You have nothing to wager."

"I know. That's why," Zelda braced herself, "I'm offering myself in exchange."

"No," Hanaka flat out rejected. There was barely a pause.

The man and Zelda sat back in shock. "But, the clan will do anything, trade-"

"No," Hanaka repeated. "I am holding no prisoners of interest to the clan and I know who you are. You, boy, are the son of that hawkish councilwoman and you, girl, were always trailing after Impaz and bear the dagger of the clan's leader. I will not risk it. I will not declare war on the clan." He waved a hand. "Take them back where you found them. No doubt they take after my son and no one knows they left Kakariko."

Jachim and Tarok made the sheikah stand. Zelda struggled, "Please, I'm begging you. The one I'm trading for is a girl. Her name is Linore. She's a witch and I know you'll kill her! So please! Take me in her place!"

Jorn's cheek twitched when he looked at me. I blinked in reply. Hanaka lifted a hand. The sheikah were released. Hanaka glanced our way. He covertly gestured us forward. "You would die for a witch?"

"Yes," Zelda answered without hesitating. She knelt and bowed her head. "Send her back to Kakariko with my companion. I'll accept whatever you decide her fate to be."

"Well this is awkward," Kylar said with a sideways look to Hanaka.

Hanaka rested a hand on my back and nodded. I unwrapped my scarf and offered an apologetic smile. "Hiya, Zelda. What a surprise to see you here."

The man's jaw dropped. Zelda looked like she'd been turned to stone. Hanaka fought not to smirk. "May I introduce Link, queen of the tribe."

Zelda finally unfroze and stood with a disgusted look. "You married your neice?"

Kylar snorted and looked away. Jorn wrapped an assertive arm around my waist. His most charming smile on, he answered, "Actually, I did. I believe we've met. I'm Jorn."

Zelda looked between us incredulously. I spoke up. "Would someone please cut them loose. This is ridiculous enough as it is."

Jachim produced a dagger and cut the ropes holding them. Zelda shook her head. "But I thought you were being held against your will. Did they force this on you, Link? I heard-"

I cut her off with a glare. "Whatever you've heard is false. I accepted Jorn's proposal. We were married two days ago. I lifted my sleeve to show our matching bands. "I am the future queen of the tribe by my own choice."

Hanaka looked down at the sheikah like a disapproving parent. "I stand by what I said. You will be returned to the field. The last thing we want is another war." He raised an eyebrow. "And I'm right that you came without permission?"

The man ducked his head sheepishly and admitted, "Yes."

"Da, it's nearly sunset. They'll never reach Kakariko before the creatures of the night awaken."

"What are you suggesting?" Kylar asked.

"After the passing of Impaz and in the absence of the true heir of the hylian throne, Zelda is the closest thing Hyrule has to a benevolent leader. We should treat her and her friend as such." I didn't actually know tribe protocol, but I hoped they'd understand.

"Wait, are you asking us to stay the night?" The sheikah man asked.

I looked to Kylar. "Can they, papa?"

"Papa?" Zelda took a step back with a horrified expression.

Kylar was struggling so hard not to laugh. He reached for Hanaka's hand and placed kisses on his wrist. "What do you think, nadara?"

Hanaka relented while the sheikah grew more squeemish. "Alright. But they're your responsibility, Link. The wolves will have to be alert."

"Wolves?"

Jorn tilted his head with a reasuring grin. "They're not actual wolves. It's the name of the team."

"So what is your name?" I asked.

The man was taken aback. "Uh, it's Quent."

"Well, Quent, Zelda, it seems our queen intends to show you tribe hospitality. But I'll keep your weapons locked here for the duration of your stay." Hanaka sighed. "Ky, Jachim, Tarok, accompany them until you find the wolves."

We were almost out the door before Quent exclaimed, "Toria! We left my little sister a ways from the border!"

Zelda looked like she was trying to think of a polite way to decline my offer that wouldn't get them both killed. I nodded to Hanaka. "We'll find her."

Quent bit his lip. I led the way from the king's office. The warriors parted before me. I decided to let Hanaka clear up any confusion. On the way to our barracks, we ran into the twins.

"Hey. What was the al- what are sheikah doing here?" Nasha pointed at Zelda.

Navid lowered his brother's hand. "Rude."

Tarok shook his head. "Where are the others?"

"Stephan and Rashan are in the harem. Darius is helping Dani in the stables," Nasha answered.

Jorn commanded, "Go ahead to the stables. We'll meet you there. Ready our horses."

"Roger," they answered in unison. They both saluted and ran off.

Quent looked overwhelmed by the whole encounter. I patted his arm. "Come. We need to find the others then we will find your sister."

Rashan was with his mother. When she saw me, she said, "The cipher isn't complete yet, princess."

I hugged her. "Actually, I was wondering if I could borrow Rashan."

She smiled and stroked his cheek. "Go on, boy. Your queen needs you."

When we rejoined the others, he merely raised an eyebrow. I asked, "Do you know where Stephan is?"

"Follow me."

We knocked on Orla's apartment. Karis and Tonya were visiting their daughter in law and grandson. I asked, "Is Stephan around?"

Orla answered, "He's in the other room. He'll only be a min- Zelda? Quent? What are you doing here?"

Karis clicked her tongue. "Where did you get those scratches, Jorn?"

Tonya stood and put Taj on one hip. "Boy, you better not have been picking fights again."

She pulled his ear. Jorn complained, "Ow, Tonya! Knock it off!"

She released him as Taj squawked. I reached out for the child and Tonya lifted Jorn's shirt. Quent and Zelda looked completely lost, and the others acted like this was completely normal.

Stephan exited the back room buckling his belt. Jorn yanked his shirt down. "Thank the gods. Come on Stephan! We'll give him back later, Orla."

Stephan smiled and kissed Taj's head. I passed him back to Tonya and said, "I'll use your creme tonight on him."

"Tie him to the bed if you have to."

I raised an eyebrow. "I doubt that'll be necessary."

"But it does make things more fun," Karis added with a giggle.

"Karis!" Orla exclaimed.

She winked at me. "Our princess knows, I'm sure. Ky, can you linger a moment?"

I looked to the ceiling. Goddess give me strength. We abandoned Kylar. "Good night, girls."

Finally free of the harem, Quent asked, "Is everyone here sideways?"

"No, Tarok answered. "But we are a haven for the socially outcast."

We crossed the pasture. Dani waited with the others. I ruffled his hair. Once mounted, we rode toward the field. Quent said, "We left her near a rock slide."

"I know it," Jachim said.

We picked up speed and turned toward the lake. The sun was higher than I'd thought, but on foot the sheikah still would have been traveling under moonlight.

The boulders were two hundred meters away when I saw a blue and white figure jump and slide between the rocks. A dog leap onto the boulder. It snarled and bit as it tried to get to her.

I drew my bow and fired at the same time Navid did. Our arrows sank into the dog's side and knocked it over. We spread out, Epona taking the lead. I drew my half sword and tossed it to Zelda. Then I flipped off Epona and stabbed the dog before it could get up. Epona stamped and bit at another.

Quent jumped off his horse and climbed the rocks. Reaching into the crevice, he shouted, "Grab hold!"

The owners of the dogs had finally appeared. Navid took position beside me and we fired arrows in a deadly rain. Quent tossed Toria to Rashan. As they retreated to safety, I called, "Fall back!"

The others disengaged. I commanded, "Go, Navid! I'll cover you!"

He ran and mounted. I called Epona back and sprinted until she was beside me. Then I swung up and we disappeared into the labyrinth of the canyon. "Jachim, Tarok, tell my father what happened and dispatch a company to drive them away from our border. Rendezvous at our barracks," I directed.

"Sir," They said before cutting toward the main gate.

We used the north entrance then dismounted. It wasn't until we were locked within our barracks that I could finally breathe. I sat next to Jorn and grinned. "That was exciting."

A chorus of nervous laughter echoed my words. I noticed the girl still clutched Rashan's hand. Quent put a hand on her shoulder. "Are you hurt?"

She shook her head. "But I lost my favorite knife."

"Oh, Toria. I'll get you another."

Someone pounded on the door. "Wolves, open up!"

Navid hurriedly unlocked it as Zelda hastily shoved my sword back into its scabbard. Kylar burst into the room. "Are you alright? They said those bastards-" His eyes landed on Toria. He immediately hugged her. "Thank the gods they were in time."

She pulled away when he released her and bumped into Rashan. He steadied her. "Easy. It's all a bit of a shock."

Toria sat on a bed. "Quent? What's going on?" There was a shrill note in her voice.

I sat beside her. "Let me start from the beginning."

It took nearly an hour and my throat was dry when I finished, but the sheikah finally understood why I wasn't in need of rescue. I leaned into Jorn and closed my eyes. He kissed my hair before asking, "Are you hungry? We can go for supper if you wish."

First gerudo in Kakariko, now sheikah in the fortress. I confirmed, "I think that would be wise, but we should take it to the training field. We are less likely to be disturbed."

"I'll escort you," Kylar suggested.

I kissed his cheek. "Thanks, papa."

We received a number of curious glances before we retreated outside. Kylar announced, "I'm going to check on the skirmish. Sunshine, you're in charge of sleeping arrangements. Let someone know if you need anything."

I gave him a thumbs up because my mouth was full. The sheikah were slow to eat. I reached across and grabbed from Quent's plate. "Here, Jorn."

Jorn smiled around my fingers as he ate from my hand. He grabbed my wrist and licked the other side of my fingers. I shook my head, a smile in my eyes.

Nasha rolled his eyes. "Go to your room if you're going to be like that."

The others groaned when Jorn kissed my palm and started moving up my arm. "Jorn, love, we have guests. Please control yourself."

He dropped my hand when he reached my elbow and slung an arm over my shoulder, pressing his side to mine. He agreed, "Only because you say so."

After our display, I noticed the sheikah finally started eating. I spied on Quent's younger sister. The family resemblance was obvious. They both had he same nose and curve to their jawline. She caught my stare. I smiled and said, "I don't think we've been formally introduced. My name is Link Stormtower. This is my husband, Prince Jorn. These men are the wolf squad." I went around the circle. "I hope we didn't scare you when we rescued you from those bandits."

Quent introduced himself and his sister to the team. Zelda looked at her plate and added, "We expected everything up until your fathers," she glanced up then away, "declined our offer. The rest has been a complete surprise."

Stephan blinked at her. "I explained when we met in the basement of Link's uncle that we do not wish for trouble. If our people can live in peace, we could wish for nothing more."

Quent and Zelda nodded. Toria crooned, "This meat is really good. I don't remember when I last had meat so tender."

Rashan pushed his plate toward her. "Help yourself. We eat a high protein diet to help counter the affects of training."

She dug into his plate. Rashan glanced away with a soft smile. Jorn and Stephan shared a knowing look. I covered my own smile by stuffing my face. When I was full, I laid my head in Jorn's lap. He played with my hair in the evening sun.

The wolves lounged around. Toria was trying her best to maintain her posture and sit straight like Quent and Zelda, but she was failing. Darius knelt behind her. She pulled her knees up. "What are you doing?"

Darius pulled her hair back and started untangling it. "Your hair is the perfect length to braid. Do I have your permission to put it up?"

I reassured, "He knows what he's doing. I've had him do mine before."

Quent said before Toria could, "I'm not entirely comfortable with this."

Toria shook her head. "Quent, it's fine."

Navid gave a wolfish grin. "Besides, Darius doesn't bite. That's my job."

Stephan's shoulders shook and Nasha snorted. Darius muttered, "Seriously? Your only goal is to embarrass me, isn't it."

"It's because we love you," I replied.

I got a smile out of him. A voice called, "Hey!"

I sat up expecting a blue light. I felt my chest fall as Dani and Sharif ran up. They set upon or leftovers. I gestured, "Boys, meet Zelda, Quent, and Toria of the clan. This is Dani, Darius's younger brother and Sharif, Rashan's younger brother."

Sharif stared at Toria's hands and said between bites, "Rashan has scars like that. You throw knives as well?"

Toria hid her hands in her lap. Rashan reached over. He asked curiously, "May I?"

She looked to Quent. He denied permission. Rashan instead pointed to a scar on his thumb. "I got this when I was nine. I cut myself playing with my father's daggers. He was furious with me. I was under house arrest for a week after that, but I was hooked. My father started training me so I wouldn't do it behind his back."

Toria volunteered, "I got a nasty one on my palm on my eighth birthday. My dad sewed it back together before my mother saw it. I couldn't use his present for nearly three weeks." She reached into a fold of fabric and pulled out a knife.

I cautioned, "Don't let Kylar catch you with that."

"It's his fault no one checked her for weapons," Jorn countered.

Toria passed the thin knife to Rashan and explained, "This was my birthday present."

Rashan balanced the blade and flicked it into the air before catching it. He held the bare handle out to Toria. "It's very well made. The craftsmanship needed for a knife like that requires a master. Is that steel from the mountain?"

Toria flipped the blade and slid it back into her clothes. "You have a good eye. It is. My dad gave it to me three months before the siege. He died protecting our king."

We all froze. Darius stopped braiding and hugged her. "We are sorry for your loss."

Rashan tentatively rested a hand on her knee. She buried her emotions. "The clan shows no weakness."

Darius finished his work and took his place beside Navid. Rashan bit his lip. "Grief is not a weakness, Toria."

She looked over when he said her name for the first time. I saw confusion in her eyes. Then she stood abruptly and walked to the fence fifteen feet away. Rashan moved to follow, but Quent glared and he backed down. Quent stood by his sister, not quite touching. They weren't even looking at each other.

I murmured, "The clan are so cold. Why isn't he comforting her?"

Jorn twined our fingers together and kissed my knuckles. Zelda answered, "He is, in our own way. I haven't heard her speak about her father in years."

Rashan's head snapped up. The look of longing in his eyes was palpable. I whispered, "Go to her."

As he passed, his hand rested on my shoulder. I understood and followed a few steps behind. He bowed to Quent. "May I speak with your sister?"

Quent looked to me and stepped back. Toria looked once again to Rashan. He pulled a knife from his belt. The leather was stained and worn from use. "This was my uncle's. He died the day of the siege. This is all that I have from him. The rest burnt in the pyre. I want you to have it. It's saved my life. I will feel better knowing you are under its protection."

She took the dagger, their fingers touching. "Thank you."

Rashan glanced away and cleared his throat. Rubbing his neck, he said, "You are welcome. It's heavier than your knives, but I could show you. I'm sure you will learn quick."

Toria massaged her arms and looked at the ground. "I'd like that."

Rashan smiled at her showing his dimples. She smiled and blushed. I rested a hand on Quent's elbow. "It's rude to stare. Come back to the others."

"I can't leave her with a thief. She's barely sixteen," he growled under his breath.

I lent a stern tone to my voice. "I swear on my honor he won't do anything to shame your sister. The tribal code doesn't allow it."

He finally followed me back and sat by Zelda. She pulled out her harp and played. There wasn't any real melody and I could tell she was nervous with every bad chord.

Quent kept glancing at his sister and Rashan. He jumped at the sound of metal sinking into wood. I looked over to see Toria beaming up at Rashan. I rested a hand on Quent's knee. "Leave her be. She's having fun."

"I thought only Rashan enjoyed throwing knives that much," Jorn commented.

Stephan sighed. "This may sound weird, but I'm glad the patrol found you trespassing."

Zelda folded her arms. "We're not prisoners?"

"Zelda, relax. If you want to return to Kakariko, I won't stop you, but I'd prefer if the sun was out and you had fresh horses. I meant what I said."

"About what?" Quent asked.

"Leading Hyrule. The witch-queen's reign is a fallacy. In my eyes, you're the one the hylians follow. I'm here as Jorn's wife. I want our people to ally."

"You want to reform the old treaty?" Zelda clarified.

Jorn squeezed my shoulders. "If you are interested."

The wolves stood and turned west as one. A patrol rounded the corner on horseback. Nasha gave a short howl. Rashan led Toria back and stood in front of her and her brother. The horsemen dismounted and bowed.

I asked, "Did the bandits leave our territory?"

"By leave you mean...?" Malachai strutted to the front.

I narrowed my eyes. "Boys, go inside."

"But-"

I shot Sharif a look. He and Dani ran into the fortress. I returned my dark look to Malachai. "Explain yourself, captain."

Malachai tipped his head. "We found and executed the bandits from the lake. None escaped."

He was so sure of himself. Was he still trying to impress me? I swallowed the bile in my throat. Jorn asked, "Has Hanaka been briefed?"

"We came first to you."

My lip curled in revulsion. "We are detained at the moment, captain. Take your report to the king."

Malachai raised an eyebrow at my hostile tone. Then he bowed and muttered under his breath, "I suppose we can't all be lapdogs. Though the trespassers aren't much to guard."

He turned. My team bristled. I snapped, "Malachai." He stopped. I put iron into my voice. "Remember who it is you are speaking to. The wolves were the first to engage the bandits and the sheikah are my guests. Do not test my patience, as my personal guard fulfills their duty well."

Malachai turned back, eyes locked on me. He tried to hide his anger and failed. I held my chin high. He would never be my lover. At last, he shouldered past his team and mounted. "As you command, my queen."

He kicked his horse and rode off. His men were at a loss. I slowly exhaled. "I'm sorry for my tone. Please, bed your horses for the night, see the physicians if you need healing, and get some rest. Thank you for eliminating the threat to our border."

The men relaxed at my gentle voice. Malachai's team wasn't like their captain. They bowed and left. Jorn wrapped an arm around me and I leaned into his chest.

Rashan apologized, "I'm sorry about my cousin. He can be a pain in the ass most of the time."

Darius advised, "We should return to the barracks."

The halls were filling with people returning to their homes. I received bows the entire way back. In the wolf barrack, I complained, "I wish they'd stop with all the formality."

Jorn consoled, "We rarely have a princess, Link. Give it time."

The boys began to strip down. Quent and Zelda were appalled. Toria shrugged and followed suit. I watched, amused by the pile of weapons she created on the table. The others stopped what they were doing as she pulled a wrap off her stomach that was filled with knives.

She noticed our stares when she was down to one layer of clothes. "What?"

I smiled and shook my head. "It's nothing."

She sat by Rashan and held his hand. Rashan blushed and avoided eye contact with Quent. I suggested, "Rashan, why don't you set up sleeping quarters for Toria, Zelda, and myself in the office. Quent can sleep with you guys."

Toria stood when Rashan did. "I'll help you."

Quent crossed his arms. "Keep the door open."

She stuck her tongue out. Sixteen and already a full sheikah. Were the clan so hard pressed? Zelda and Quent sat facing Jorn and myself. She began, "If we are to form the treaty, we'll need to agree on a base. But I'm not sure I'll be able to convince the council."

Quent brushed her side with a hand as if by accident. "You already have my vote. If we can convince my mother, that's all we need."

We spent over an hour writing and editing a rough draft. When everyone was satisfied, Jorn folded the paper. "Da will have to approve before we sign. We'll take it to him in the morning."

Rashan and Toria reappeared. I gave them a look. That was an awfully long time to complete their task. They both blushed. I stretched and said, "Jorn and I need to retrieve a few items from our apartment. Zelda, Toria, will you accompany us?"

Toria glanced up at Rashan and he winked pressing gently on her back. I gestured to the twins and Darius. Together we went to my home within the fortress. The wolves stayed in the hall.

I pointed to my old room. "Sleep clothes are on the far left. Take what you need." They shut the door behind them. I pointed to the chair. "Take off your pants and sit."

"Yes, ma'am."

I fought a smile and grabbed Tonya's ointment and a roll of cloth. As I began treating him, I complained, "You could have at least worn your armor."

"I wasn't thinking clearly this morning."

I dabbed the medicine on his cheek. "We were both out of sorts." I kissed the side of his face and hugged him. "I'm sorry. I don't want us to fight."

Jorn pulled me into his lap. The bandage on his thigh snagged on my pants. Jorn's arms were my fortress. His heart beat against my chest putting me at ease. His chest vibrated as he apologized, "I am sorry as well, nadara."

"Link, how are we supposed to- oh!"

I looked over my shoulder to see Zelda cover Toria's eyes. Her own were fixed on the ceiling. She said, "Please cover yourself, prince. Toria is too young to look at a naked married man."

I smirked. "So those are the hylian boundaries papa told me about."

Jorn chuckled as I stood. He walked to our room and mentioned, "I'll grab something for Quent as well."

When the door shut behind him, Zelda lowered her hand and admitted, "I must say, your husband has an impressive physique."

"That's quite the complement coming from you."

Toria was red with shock. "Do all men... um..." She pointed between her legs. I remembered the surprise I had when I first saw a naked man. "Yes, though Jorn's is very satisfactory."

I grinned at the stunned sheikah. Zelda explained, "The gerudo are much more muscular than the clan. We would lose half our stealth without our slight builds."

I winked. "And yet the gerudo are incredible at stealth maneuvers. Maybe we should start a cross-training program." Toria covered her face with the clothes in her hands. I added, "That's actually a scarf."

We entered the bedroom. I asked, "Do you need anything, Zelda?"

She folded her arms and cocked a hip. "No."

"Alright. How about this, Toria?" I held up a loose pair of shorts and a sleeveless top.

She touched the fabrics. "I can't. The clan would never wear something so needlessly showy."

I set them on the bed. "You should have seen my marriage clothes. The jewelry is in the chest behind you."

As I changed, I heard her gasp. "It's all so beautiful."

I looked to see a simple gold ring in her hands. "Try it. If it fits, it's yours."

"Link..."

"I couldn't."

I took the ring and slipped it on her left hand. "Well what do you know."

"No. I can't." She took it off and set it in the jewel chest.

Zelda reached for the ring and pressed it into Toria's hand. "It is a gift from royalty. To decline would be a great insult, Toria."

Toria gave her a hopeful smile. Clan subtlety was so strange. I said, "Your brother's probably wondering where we are. Hurry and change so we can go."

Jorn was waiting. He whispered in my ear, "Playing matchmaker, love?"

I winked and smirked. The boys refused to look straight at Toria the whole walk back. Quent and Rashan froze when they saw her. She blushed in embarrassment. "I knew it. They look ridiculous on me."

Quent shook his head. "No, it's... I guess I forgot how close you are to becoming a woman."

Rashan came forward and guided her to a bed. "Your beauty is as deadly as your knives. I think my heart stopped the moment you walked in the room."

She smiled coyly and brushed her hair back. Rashan boldly reached for her hand. "What is this?"

Toria played with the ring. "It was a gift from the princess."

Rashan shook his head. "It's on the wrong finger. It'll only get in the way." He moved the ring from her index finger to the one beside the pinky.

"Rashan!" Stephan warned.

"What are you playing at, thief?" Quent demanded.

"Wait, brother-"

Quent pulled Toria away from Rashan. "She's still a child! How dare you make such advances!"

"What are you talking about? The ring would hinder her skills. I only-"

"He's right, Quent! Please let go! You're hurting my wrist!"

Zelda put a hand on Quent's chest. He let go of Toria and she rubbed where he had held her. Jorn kept Rashan back with a look and gently held Toria's arm in both hands. "Are you injured?"

"No. I-I'm more startled than anything."

Stephan and Darius relaxed their stance and let go of their sword hilts. Jorn looked at Quent with regal steel. "The tribe protects the weak with a vengeance. Be careful your actions do not put us at odds, sheikah."

"I'm not weak," Toria murmured.

Jorn brushed back her hair and shook his head with a gentle smile. "I would never dream of making such a ridiculous assumption. Now off to bed. It has been a long day." He guided her to the office and shut the door. Without turning, he said, "Rashan, when hylians make a claim, they gift rings to be worn like that."

Rashan's eyes widened and he took a step back. He looked to Quent, face red. "Goddess, I swear I didn't know." He covered his face. "She's going to think the worst of me."

I stroked his arm in passing. "Don't be so hard on yourself. Zelda, come to bed."

Jorn made me pause. He gave me a kiss and slapped my rear. I bit his lower lip and whispered, "Good night, nadara."

I shut the door and leaned against it. He made me lightheaded with desire. Toria was red in the face. A light flush crept up my cheeks as I realized she had witnessed our exchange.

I took the place beside her. "Has anyone told you about the lust of a man?"

Toria shook her head. "The clan doesn't... We don't..."

Zelda rescued, "That is discussed strictly between a husband and wife."

I looked at the ceiling. "Would you like me to explain? It may be much easier to understand your own feelings. I know it was for me."

Toria asked, "How did you know? And why are you so flamboyant about it?"

I folded my hands behind my head. "I never had your conservative hylian lifestyle, so it was different for me. The tribe are family. They tease and jest, but at the heart of them all, they want you to be happy. Seeing couples in love teaches the young men what to look for when they meet a woman or man. And how to court them.

"As for the first question," I smiled to myself, "we're newly wed. The rest of the gerudo aren't quite as desperate for each other as Jorn and myself. But I still want him. Even now. We haven't slept apart since the night before we took our vows." I wrapped my arms around my stomach. "His presence calms and excites me. When we kiss my senses set on fire. I smile all the time we're together. I love him."

"I don't know if I've ever felt that," Zelda murmured.

Toria gasped. "Oh, goddess, mother's going to kill me." She covered her face again. "I- That man... Rashan."

His name was a breath off her lips. She tucked her legs to herself. I knew what she was feeling. I had felt the same way above the tavern with Ruto. Zelda blanched. I filled the silence, "He's a sensitive man, a strong warrior, and a hopeless romantic like his father. To give him your heart would not be unwise. And if he gives you his, it would be for life. Nadara, the fire of my soul."

"Nadara," She echoed.

"And he's only eighteen."

Zelda looked at me. "A warrior at eighteen?"

"The twins are Toria's age. Technically their ceremony is over a year ahead of schedule."

Zelda cursed, "Gods, they are terrifying fighters."

I rolled onto my side. "Sleep on your thoughts, Toria. The sun will bring clarity."

A heavy warmth pressed against my back. Their arm wrapped around me, our hands clasped below my breast. I inhaled Jorn's scent and turned into him. "What time is it?"

"Nearly dawn. I couldn't sleep without you."

I kissed his neck. "I missed you too."

We cuddled in the dark. I whispered, "Toria's fallen for Rashan."

"The feeling's mutual, but I doubt her brother will give his blessing."

I sighed. "They have time. If we can convince the sheikah to sign the treaty, they might have a chance."

"No pressure."

After an hour, Zelda shifted. She jumped back. "When did you enter?"

"After my shift on watch. Are you saying I snuck up on a sheikah?" Jorn asked with genuine curiosity.

Zelda shook Toria instead of replying. Toria groaned, "Not yet, mother."

"Wake up. We must be on our way."

Toria stretched. "Right. We go to-" She opened her eyes. Jorn waved. She stuttered, "Oh. Um, good morning, your highness."

Zelda was dressing in the corner. She hadn't removed her chest binder or pants while she slept. I noticed again how her body lacked mine and Toria's feminine curves.

"Childbirth will be difficult for you with your narrow hips, Zelda. When you and Quent have a child, the tribe's doctors can assist with the delivery," Jorn offered.

Zelda's shoulders lifted. Toria asked, "You're with my brother?"

I interrupted, "Jorn, while generous, Zelda-"

"Quent has proposed, but I declined. I would make a poor wife, Prince Jorn, because I am unable to bear children. An injury left me incapable of carrying a baby. Please, do not speak of it."

Zelda walked to the door. Jorn said, "A woman's worth isn't measured by that."

Toria stood as the door shut and began dressing. "Thank you for letting us stay, princess, and thank you for your lesson." She glanced at Jorn with a blush. "Your wife loves you more than I can say. The tribe is lucky to have heirs like you." Then she followed Zelda out.

We retrieved their weapons after breakfast. Hanaka looked up as we entered. "Good morning. I trust you slept well?"

"Morning, da. Do you have a moment?"

Hanaka raised an eyebrow at his son. He lowered his quill. "What is it, Jorn?"

Jorn looked at me. "We've been talking," I finished, "And we want to reform the treaty with the clan."

Hanaka looked to Zelda. "Is this true?"

Jorn passed him our rough draft. "We all worked on this last night."

Hanaka scanned the paper. Zelda explained, "The council may deny it, but I must at least try to convince them."

"Hm, it seems my daughter was right about you, clan leader. How long should I give you?"

Quent spoke up, "Three weeks. We'll send a messenger to the border in either case."

"I accept. Now you must return to your village. Even with tribe horses, it will take full daylight to reach Kakariko."

Zelda and Quent reclaimed their weapons and Hanaka pulled Jorn and I aside. "The steps you made in one night took over a year last time." He wrapped an arm around each of us. "You've made me proud yet again."

There was a knock at the door. Kylar entered. "The horses are waiting and the eagles are ready."

Hanaka nodded. "Come, children. Your parents must be worried sick."

Kylar's eagles and Stephan's wolves made for an impressive escort. We took our time. Rashan introduced Toria and Quent to his father. I hung back by Zelda. "I'm surprised you haven't mentioned anything about the prophecy."

Zelda glanced my way. "I didn't think I needed to."

A few minutes passed. I mentioned, "I've been curious. Why did you think I was being held prisoner? Did Marin put you up to this?" The reins twisted in her hands. I exclaimed, "He told you?"

"He said you didn't believe the prophecy. I can't convince you if you have no faith." She flicked the reins and rode ahead.

We stopped at the border. Stephan handed Quent a bag. "There's food and medical supplies for the trip."

I handed a drawstring pouch to Toria. Then I motioned Rashan forward. He was suddenly shy.

Toria reached for his hand. Rashan closed his eyes and kissed her palm. He said, "I want to see you again."

Toria smiled. "When the treaty is signed, I'll meet you in the field. Until then, I'll remember you by this." She rested a hand on his dagger at her waist. "And you can remember me with this."

Toria leaned forward and whispered in his ear. He turned in surprise and she kissed him. After a moment, their lips parted. They were both red, but Toria shot her brother a proud defiant look.

Zelda nodded toward me. "Thank you for your hospitality, Link Stormtower, Queen of the Gerudo. I look forward to our next meeting."

The next day, the falcon finally arrived from the hunters. Hanaka and the wolves prepared for the trek into the desert. Kylar walked into my room. "Why aren't you packing?"

"I'm not going. Jorn asked me to stay."

"Well, that's going to be a problem since the queen needs to stay with her guard." He ruffled my hair. "Pack light, sunshine. It's only one night."

We left an hour before sunset and set up camp. The walls of the fortress were barely in view. The fire crackled as we ate our rations. Hanaka stood.

The light illuminated his face, but the dark beyond was a void. He began, "Wolves. A family pack. I knew from the day you chose your team's name that you'd be strong and I've had my hands full ever since." The boys chuckled. Hanaka smiled with the love of a father. "You might not know it, but I've planned what I wanted to tell you tonight for years.

"All of you have become like sons to me. I've pushed you past your limits again and again so that you'll know you have none. I've watched you grow. I've seen you struggle and persevere. And I've been there to pick you up when you fall. But I will not hinder you.

"You must depend on each other from now on. A family pack. While I will always be your mentor and offer my guidance, it will be at your side as your fellow warrior." He paused and cleared his throat. "Tomorrow night, you become gerudo warriors. The honor of the tribe rests within each of you." He took a steadfast breath. "I couldn't be more proud of you and it's been an honor to serve as your mentor."

He bowed. The boys stood and bowed back. Then they each embraced him. Hanaka's speech reminded me of Sef. He had guided and trained me like Hanaka had for the wolves. Was that why he had left? So I'd stop depending on him? I hugged my knees and wiped my eyes.

Hanaka drew his sword. "It's time for my final lesson."

We all stood in a line. I followed the drill as best I could. The boys moved with absolute control and confidence of their abilities. We trained late into the night.

The next morning, we sparred under the desert sunrise. When it became unbearable, we took shelter in our tents. Hanaka emerged. "Stephan."

Stephan went to him and entered the tent. After a couple hours, he came out and Darius went in. This continued until I was left. Jorn tapped my shoulder.

I stood and entered the tent. Hanaka sat before a table. A small bowl had already been used judging by the black soot inside. Hanaka gestured for me to take a seat. "Your team decided on their symbol which they now bear. Are you ready to receive it?"

I nodded. Hanaka said, "Then remove your shirt and lay down." He began to wipe a section of skin to the left and slightly below my collar bone. The alcohol stung my eyes. With care, he used a thin sharp needle to inject the contents of the bowl into my skin. While he worked, we spoke.

When he was done, he helped me sit up and held out a mirror. The head of a wolf had been tattooed into my skin. Hanaka said, "There's one other thing. Sit."

Hanaka knelt beside me. He pushed my hair to the other side and used a knife to cut a section of my hair. He burnt all except for a small piece he wrapped in string and placed alongside six others. Once satisfied, he trimmed the rest of my hair to frame his work.

He held up the mirror again. I touched the shaved section and the pattern he had cut away. "Thank you, da."

Hanaka hugged me. "Dress and go to the others. They'll apply your paint. We leave in one hour."

The twins were mixing colors when I found the boys. They all had their faces painted like wolves. Nasha motioned for me to sit. He and Navid put the oily mix on my face while the others broke camp. When they were finished, I looked in the mirror. I hardly recognized myself. I had become a wolf. Our spirits blended into one.

Hanaka went to his horse, his face painted into the severe angles of an eagle. "We go to the hunters."

We rode past sunset. I could see a raging bonfire and heard drums. Hanaka gave his call-sign and the drums stopped. We entered the ring of warriors. Each was painted with the animal of their team. I spotted the eagles as we dismounted.

Hanaka led us to the center and announced for the warriors, "The wolf squad is ready for their final test. Bring forth the beast."

A great deal of grunting and squealing could be heard from the left side of the ring. Hanaka stopped beside me and whispered in my ear, "Your team must kill the boar. Work together. The one who lands the killing blow will carve out its heart. Go, Link."

I drew my swords as the hunters released a massive wild pig into the circle. The tusks were as thick as my biceps and as long as my arms. It screamed in frustration as the hunters' spears blocked retreat.

The wolves circled toward the creature. The boar watched us approach. There was an intelligence in its black eyes. It knew it had to kill us before we killed it. The boys widened our circle.

The boar lunged for Darius. Darius dodged and Nasha cut the boar's leg. He missed the tendon, but not the artery. Blood stained the sand as the boar spun. It lowered its head and charged.

We jumped out of its path. The warriors lowered their spears and the boar slid to a halt. It squealed in rage and turned. We locked eyes. Then it charged.

Rain poured from the sky, but the world was on fire around me. It was an out of body experience. A giant black mass with the head of a pig watched me with glowing eyes. I watched as a man drew my bow while I raised the mastersword. The sages watched from the edge. They shimmered as if they had no solid form. One of them I didn't recognize.

He was gerudo. A strangely familiar mark crossed his chest and a pale scar circled both biceps. "Master..."

"Link! Move!"

Darius tackled me as I snapped back to reality. The boar's feet caught Darius's chest and tossed him off me. I picked up my swords.

Rashan threw a knife that stuck in the beast's eye. It screamed its pain and turned, slamming the side of its head into Navid. We weren't coordinating our efforts.

Stephan howled, drawing the boar's remaining eye. Stephan ran as the boar charged. At the last second, he dodged and grabbed a fist of fur. He swung onto the boar and rode it until the beast flipped him over its head.

The animal's jaws snapped at Stephan, but its tusks were in the way. Stephan had his hands under the boar's jaw while it pushed him deeper into the sand.

I sheathed my swords and howled. The boys rallied to my side. I ran and leapt onto the boar's back. The boar reared onto its hind legs. Stephan rolled backwards onto his feet. The boys each took a weakness and stabbed at the same time I drew my sword and sliced the back of the boar's neck.

I leapt free as it fell to its side. The boar's legs pedaled, but it was no longer able to stand. The boys waited on me. I saw fear and pain in the boar's eye. A pitiful squeal escaped it.

I closed my eyes and drew my sword, thrusting it beneath the jaw and through the brain. The spastic motions stopped. I lifted my face to the sky and howled. My pack joined their voices to mine. Jorn nuzzled my neck before using his mother's dagger to split the boar's belly.

The others grabbed hold of the rib cage and pulled. Jorn cut away organs and tissue until the heart was exposed. Then he held out the knife. The heart steamed in the cold air. I went up to my shoulders to cut it out. Jorn helped me lift it from the carcass.

We gave it to our captain. Stephan carried the heart and tossed it into the fire. The warriors erupted into cheers. The hunters came forward and finished preparing the carcass and carried it to the fire. The pig blood was already drying on my skin.

Jorn led me to a wagon. We kissed in the moonlight. He whispered against my lips, "Congratulations, my warrior queen. The wolf in you is strong and beautiful."

"The mate of the alpha represents the pack. Your mate, nadara. I adore your ferocity, alpha."

Our mouths never seperated while he lifted me onto the wagon. I moaned, my nails digging into his back. Jorn pulled away and bit the base of my neck. I sighed, "We need to clean up and get back."

Jorn sank his fingers into my hips. "I know." He pulled my legs to his waist. "But we'll continue this before the sun rises."

I groaned hungrily. "I'll hold you to that."

We returned to Hanaka. The hunters stabbed into the fire and withdrew the charred heart. Stephan cut a peice for each of us. The hunters bowed to Hanaka and took the heart to the other warriors. The flesh was chewy, the center barely cooked.

The drums began to sound. Hanaka walked to the center. "The ritual is complete. The wolves are no longer sons of the tribe, but our warrior brethren. Let the celebration in their honor begin!"

The drums picked up volume and speed, echoing the excitement in my heart. Then the twins howled and joined the dancing. It was a long time before Jorn fulfilled his promise.

Ok, so I'm sorry if this last bit gets gory. But I am writing from experience as I have butchered my own animals for meat and raised hogs.

Also, Symbolism! The tribe is based on several different cultures. While they respect the animal, they have their own coming of age rituals that I felt explained more about their culture. And also the differences between the hylians and gerudo. Speech patterns were especially difficult for me to keep separate.

Anyway, we'll get back to the main plot in the next chapter. Please review!
