Elsa woke up to the beeping of her alarm clock. Her lips curved upwards ever so lightly at the memory of last night's happenings. Still lying on bed, she stretcher her body feeling both exhausted and completely relaxed at the same time… Elsa pulled the covers and was standing up when she realized she had slept wearing Jack's blue hoodie. Her eyes grew wide in panic.
Before her friends could see her, she jumped back on bed and threw the blankets over her body thanking all the gods in the universe for waking her up before the other two girls. She started fumbling under the covers trying to get rid of the jacket without showing it to the rest of the world.
"You okay, Elsa?" Astrid's voice came to her ears muffled by the layers fabric over her face.
She popped her head from under the covers making sure that everything else was covered and looked at Astrid as nonchalant as she could. "Yeah." She was a little out of breath. "I just felt a little dizzy…"
"You look a little red." Astrid frowned concerned. "Maybe you got a fever?"
"What? You're sick?" Violet sat up rubbing the sleep off her eyes. "See, Astrid?" She glared at Astrid. "I told you the room was too cold. Now you got Elsa sick!"
"No, I'm not sick," Elsa protested, her head still glued to her pillow and covers tight around her neck. She felt sorry for making her two friends worry, but she couldn't really find an easier way out of that situation. Any reaction from her would made would make her look suspicious—more suspicious.
"Do you want me to go get the nurse?" Astrid asked feeling legitimate guilty. She had lowered the AC temperature a little last night, even though Violet had vehemently complained about it. She never intended Elsa to get sick, she just couldn't sleep when the room was too warm…
"I'm okay, Astrid. I'll just need some minutes to wake up," Elsa said with a soft smile trying to tranquilize the other girls. "You guys can go ahead first."
"You sure?" Astrid asked taking some steps in the other blonde's direction. Elsa found herself paralyzed in a cold sweat. "We can stay if you're not feeling well." Violet nodded standing up as well.
"You guys." Elsa tried to act nonchalant, but the shrill laugh gave her away. "You don't have to worry," she said calmly looking at them with serious eyes. "I'll be up as soon my blood pressure goes back to normal and the world stops spinning."
Astrid and Violet exchanged glances for a quick moment of silent conversation. Elsa had skipped classes the day before claiming she wasn't feeling well. They had let that go without further questioning on day one, deciding that the day off could be good for Elsa. But they weren't so sure how long Elsa's break was supposed to last, especially now that she was acting all weird and secretive. She was hiding something, and it made them even more concerned about her well-being. At the same time, the girls still felt like walking on thin ice around Elsa because of that little piece on the shed they had pulled. Elsa's hurt expression wasn't something that could be easily shaken off…
At last, Violet shrugged. If Elsa said she was okay, the least they could do was to take her word for it.
"If you say so," Astrid muttered grabbing her bag of toiletries.
Elsa nodded. "I'll catch up with you two in a minute."
The girls walked out the room talking to each other and Elsa watched the door close after them.
She groaned staring at the ceiling. Before any of the other girls could come back unannounced, she stood up slipping the blue jacket off her shoulders. She folded it quickly and hid it deep inside her closet so no one would find it.
Closing the closet door, Elsa couldn't avoid smiling.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts. She should go get ready, or else she'd end up late.
And if anything, Elsa Arendelle was not one to be late.
According to the text he had just gotten, Elsa and the girls were heading to the refectory. He cursed inside his head as he finished tying his tie around his neck. It was vital for his plan that they accidentally ran into each other for breakfast, but why did they have to be so goddamn early?
He grabbed his backpack from the floor and walked to the door meticulously adjusting his hair with his fingers.
"Hold on, Frost," Hiccup called putting his blazer on. "What's the rush?"
Jack shrugged. "Just hungry," he said tiredly.
Andy met him at the doorframe buttoning his blazer. "Food's not going anywhere."
Jack shrugged again before leaving the room.
They walked to the refectory talking about the first class they would have that day, which coincidentally the three attended together. Jack made sure not to speak more than one or two words every once in a while, the strictly necessary just so his existence was recognized. He had his hands buried in his pockets and his eyes were empty, lost and distant.
"Jack?" Andy called him.
He ignored it, holding himself not to let his body react. He kept his eyes staring blankly ahead.
"Dude?" it was Hiccup's time to call.
He let his eyes grow as he was pulled back to reality and looked at his friends in confusion. "Yeah?"
"You okay?" Hiccup asked.
"Yeah…" Jack said again looking away from the other two.
Andy stared at him with concern. "You're not being very prolix today."
"Never been much prolix anyway," he said opening the doors to the refectory. He froze in place when he saw the three girls picking their breakfasts from serving counters.
The sudden stop made Hiccup bump into Jack. "What the hell are you—" He followed Jack's eyes and stopped mid-sentence.
Someone cleared their throat behind the three guys and they realized they were blocking the entrance. "We should go," Andy said moving to the trays piled up high in one of the corners of the room.
Jack and Hiccup nodded and walked out of the way as well.
"What was that?" Hiccup asked. He was looking at the girls a few people away from them talking to each other. In a further analyze, he noticed that Elsa was actually quiet and the other two were the only ones talking.
Jack sighed heavily but didn't say anything. He busied himself inspecting the breakfast foods display instead.
"So I assume you haven't talked to Elsa after that big fiasco we are not supposed to talk about?" Andy asked keeping his voice low. He too was staring at the girls with a frown.
Jack didn't say anything.
All the staring caught the girls' attention and soon Hiccup was waving at them in greeting. "Hey, losers," Violet's voice came floating with make-believe cheerfulness.
Jack gritted his teeth and held his tray of food tighter. He turned slowly to face them, his best miserable expression on his face. He locked eyes with Elsa for a fraction of second before turning away. She looked as devastated as he did. He had to bit his lip not to smile.
"How about we eat together?" Andy suggested casually. Maybe they could make amends over some nice breakfast. Like it or not, those two would have to face each other eventually. Might as well do it now.
Elsa quickly turned on her heels, making a straight line to an open table, as far as possible from the table the boys usually occupied.
"Guess that's a no," Hiccup muttered watching as Jack wordlessly got back to piling food on his plate.
"Uh… I guess that means we'll see you around?" Violet asked, her eyes uncomfortably running back to where Elsa was sitting.
"Yeah," Andy agreed with a sigh as the remaining two girls left to sit with Elsa.
"I thought you were gonna do something about it, Frost," Hiccup said nonchalant, his eyes scanning through the fruits section for something appealing to his taste buds.
"Wasn't that enough of an answer to you, Third?" Jack's voice was hoarse and low.
"You sure that's okay?" Andy asked.
Jack straightened his back and gave the blonde girl a quick glance from over his shoulder. She had her eyes glued to her plate. "Yeah," he sighed. "Everything is okay."
Gym was the only class they all had together.
Which was good and bad at the same time.
The girls' last handball match had ended and Elsa, Astrid and Violet decided to go to the pitch so they could watch the last few minutes of the boys' soccer game. They sat unnoticed on the grass watching when Hiccup stole the ball from the opponent player and passed it to Jack. He ran to the other team's side of the field bypassing the other players with ease. He and Hiccup kept kicking the ball back and forth in a relaxed manner, laughing and teasing the other team until Jack shot to the goal. The ball passed the goalie too fast to be caught and he scored.
"What happened between you two?" Violet asked as Jack's teammates ran to pat him on the back and mess his hair, or to demonstrate some other kind of male congratulatory gesture towards the silver haired boy.
Elsa needed no specifications to understand what the other girl was talking about. "You mean after you guys locked us inside the gardening shed and he went all berserk deciding that it would be fun to do a few good hundreds of dollars damage to school property?"
Silence fell over them for a moment.
"You can barely look him in the eye," Astrid said leaning back on her hands.
"That's not true…" Elsa protested with a frown. At that moment, Jack seemed to notice the three girls watching the game, almost as if to contradict her statement. As soon as their eyes met, Elsa looked down to her hands and Jack turned around and started running to the opposite direction.
That didn't go unnoticed by the other girls.
"Which," Astrid continued. "Is not very efficient considering you have to see each other all the time."
Violet nodded. "And you're making this weird for the rest of us too."
"It's not like I planned it." It was a low blow, but it got her point through, and it took her friends aback instantly.
Violet took a deep breath and crossed her ankles. "Well, maybe not. And yes, I do recognize that I am partly at fault for it…"
"More like totally at fault," Astrid muttered.
The brunette glared at her. "Not helping, Astrid," she hissed through her clenched teeth. Looking back at Elsa, she added, "What are you gonna do about it?"
Elsa raised an eyebrow at her. "What do you want me to do about it?"
"I think you know what I want you to do." Violet shrugged. "But what I want shouldn't matter at the moment."
Astrid groaned rubbing her right temple. "All this beating around the bush is giving me a headache."
Violet roller her eyes. "So what are you gonna do about it?" she asked once more.
"Do I have to do something?" Elsa whined playing with the end of her braid.
"You don't have to," Astrid said. "But are you really okay with how things are now?"
Elsa pursed her lips in a thin line. She opted for abstaining from giving an answer.
"If you're doing something, can you please hurry up?" Violet asked with a yawn. "It'd be nice if you two could solve your issues and get over with it before I fucking lose my mind."
"You better not be planning another one of your ingenious plots," Elsa said with eyes narrowed.
"I'm not." In a lower voice, she added, "But I might."
"You do that and I am never speaking to you again," Elsa threatened.
Violet let out a snort of contemp. "I wouldn't be the first one. You keep that and you won't have anyone else to talk to, El."
"Violet." Elsa sighed. "Don't go there."
"Someone has to, and doesn't look like it will be you, so…" the brunette trailed off annoyed.
"Can we please talk about something else?" Elsa begged.
"Do you like him?" Astrid felt like gagging for pronouncing those words.
"That's not really changing the subject," Elsa mocked.
"Of course it is," Violet argued nonchalant. "Before, we were talking about how annoying the whole Jack and Elsa situation is."
Elsa could not believe her ears. "Jack and Elsa situation?" she spat with indignation and some embarrassment.
"Though somehow entertaining at times, a big pain in the ass nonetheless, I must say," Violet notified.
"You're an idiot," Astrid grumbled.
Violet ignored the other girl and continued talking, "And now, we're having boys talk."
"Why am I the only one being interrogated?" Elsa asked crossing her arms.
"Because Astrid's love life is an open book."
"And Violet's relationships are a hopeless black hole of drama."
Violet threw a heartwarming smile at Astrid before turning back to Elsa. "Which leaves us with you and that idiot, yet surprisingly not-so-bad-to-the-eye asshole."
Elsa looked from one girl to the other. It didn't look like they would drop it any time soon…
"He's…" The platinum blonde stopped for a moment watching the soccer game. Her eye quickly found the silver head and focused on his back view. "A mystery." Elsa chuckled softly. "I can't understand him."
Astrid and Violet met their eyes for a moment of confusion. Something about Elsa's voice tone gave away more than just her words.
"You're not really answering the question," Violet muttered.
Elsa sighed throwing her head back and closing her eyes at the clarity. She felt the sunlight gently warming her skin.
"I don't think I have an answer to that."
No longer being the Student Council president freed her from a lot of work, which allowed Elsa to spend the rest of the day studying in the library. She sat at a desk under one of the large windows, the outside light enough to illuminate her workspace. She was enjoying having some time alone with her thoughts.
She turned her eyes away from the window and back to her books, writing down on her notebook, making some biology notes with her impeccable calligraphy and a blue pen.
Psssst.
She flipped some pages on the book open in front of her and ran her eyes through the words quickly.
Psssst.
She scribed a few phrases.
Psssst.
She adjusted herself on her seat as she read some more.
Her phone buzzed and she took it in her hands with curiosity. She had got a message. She opened it and couldn't avoid frowning.
Look up.
Elsa did as she was told to find a silver haired boy crouched close to a shelf with a book in front of his face covering everything under his eyes line. She didn't have to see it to know that he was smiling under the book. Elsa sighed loud enough for him to hear and stood up from her chair. She walked in his direction and watched as he moved further between the bookshelves.
He stopped next to the wall and Elsa stopped in front of him with her hands on her hips. He turned on his feet slowly as he put the book randomly on the shelf.
"I've been trying to get your attention for the past ten minutes," he said feigning hurt.
"I was busy," she said with a roll of eyes. She arched an eyebrow at him, a corner of her lips turning upwards ever so slightly. "Can I help you?"
Jack smirked taking a step closer to her. His eyes lied gently on hers and he licked his lips. "Most definitely you can," his voice came out as a deep, hoarse murmur.
She arched an eyebrow as he gently touched her wrists and slid his hands around her waist closing the distance separating them.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, one of her own hands sliding up his arm and resting on his shoulder.
Jack shrugged tilting his head to the side. "Saw you from the window," he said, and unable to hold himself any longer, he eagerly pressed his lips against her, trapping her between the bookshelf and himself. He held her tightly, wrapping his arms around her and he felt her fingers sliding through the hair at the back of his head. He swallowed his moan and angled his head to deepen the kiss. Soon enough, he felt his lungs start to burn in need of air, but seemed unable to part just yet. Instead, he raised Elsa's face to get better access to her mouth and kissed her like he had wanted to do the entire day.
She was the first to part, lips swollen and chest heaving with heavy pants. She rested her head at the shelf behind her and looked up at him. "How do you expect your plan to work if we keep meeting like this?" her voice was weak, but she still managed to scowl at him.
Jack laughed as out of breath as her. "It's a Friday afternoon and we're in an empty library," he reasoned with her, leaning his head and resting his lips close to her ear. In a husky whisper that enticed all the nerve endings in her body, he said, "And this is probably the last place anyone would ever think of looking for me."
"How long are we gonna keep pulling this off?" Elsa asked wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly.
He pressed his face to the side of her head and deeply inhaled the sweet scent of her hair. "Why? Scared you'll break character?" he mocked.
"Yeah, that's probably gonna be you," she retorted gently stroking the nape of his neck with her fingers. "I'm starting to feel guilty."
Another voice answered the girl before Jack could open his mouth. "As you should be."
They both turned quickly at the new voice, instinctively moving away from each other as if the contact had been enough to electrify them. They had matching panicked eyes as they stared at Andrew Davis with his arms crossed and eyebrow arched.
"Fancy seeing you here, Jack." Andy's lips were turned upwards with mockery.
"Uh… this is not what it looks like," Jack said with a smirk.
"Oh, really?" Andy rolled his eyes annoyed that Jack could think he'd ever be so dumb as to fall for that bullshit when they were caught in the act. "So you're gonna tell me that you two aren't just lying to everyone in school, not to mention your closest friends about your current relationship status? And you weren't sucking each other's souls out in the middle of the library just seconds ago!"
Jack and Elsa glanced at each other speechless. They knew they'd have to come clean with everyone, but not like that… The venom in Andy's voice, although maybe disrespectful and unnecessary, was understandable, and he spoke nothing more than the truth. "I think we owe you an explanation," Elsa mumbled.
Andy snorted throwing his head back. "It better be a damn good one."
(…)
So they explained. And Andy listened.
And now they were in silence sitting at a secluded table in the library, away from the entrance, from the windows and from the slightest threat of any kind of human existence.
And they waited.
And they waited a little more.
Jack and Elsa were sitting at one side of the table. Andy sat on the other side, staring at the wall behind the other two. Jack tapped his fingers on the wooden surface as he waited for the slightest reaction from his friend.
"So this was all some sort of cheap scheme," Andy said blankly, his eyes still not looking at the two in front of him.
"Cheap?" Jack spat the word offended. "I get the scheme part, but cheap? Really?"
The other two rolled their eyes. Elsa leaned her body forward folding her hands and resting her arms on the table. "We didn't mean for it to come this far."
"You've been lying because what?"—Andy laughed sarcastically.—"You thought it'd be fun to pull a prank on us?"
Jack snorted crossing his arms over his chest. He leaned back balancing his chair on its back legs. "Oh, you don't get to throw that victim act on us, buddy." He glared at Andy fiercely. "You know what you guys did was bullshit and totally uncalled for."
Andy shut his mouth at that. He groaned placing his elbows on the table and folding his hands over his closed eyes. "Everyone is dead worried about you two," he stated dryly. "And until a couple minutes ago, so was I."
"We know," Elsa said. "Things got a little out of hand." She turned to stare at Jack with narrowed eyes.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He stared back at her with annoyance. "You seemed to be very into it yourself!"
"No," Elsa denied with a laugh. "You came up with the plan." A corner of her lips curved upwards in mockery. "I had to nod and play along."
Jack retorted with one of his smirks, "Well, it takes two to make the plan work, Your Highness."
"It's not like I could've just dropped the act." Elsa crossed her arms over her chest. "What was I supposed to say? 'O, hey, you know how I've been ignoring this moron over here for the past few days? Well, turns out I don't hate him as much as I made you all believe I did. And FYI, it was all an act to pay you back from what you did to us on Monday!', because yeah, that would've gone perfectly fine."
"Can you two just be quiet for a moment?" Andy groaned rubbing his temples. He stared at them, his eyes drifting from one to the other. "Is it always like this?"
Jack shrugged. "Pretty much. But with a little less words and a little more acti—"
"Please, shut up," Elsa interrupted him, a bit of pink coloring her cheeks. She intently inspected her hands clutched together on her lap.
Andy stared at them wordlessly, deeply engrossed in thoughts. Words could not describe the emotions that bundled up inside of him. He was surprised—that would be a misunderstanding. He was mad—yes, very mad. Mad at them for lying, for hiding such an important thing… But he was also very mad at himself for not noticing the stupid plot going on right under his nose sooner. He was also relieved.
"You can punch me if you want," Jack's voice broke his thoughts. "Just not in the face."
Andy snorted throwing his head back. He looked at the other guy with a smirk on his lips. "I'm not gonna punch you, dumbass."
Jack let out a dramatic sigh of relief.
Andy's eyes went back to Elsa. She seemed startled, a little bit nervous… Aside from that, she seemed to be doing okay. "So this is a thing?" he asked.
Elsa took a quick glimpse of Jack with the corner of her eyes biting on her lower lip. They hadn't discussed what they were, or where they were headed to very openly yet…
Noticing her shift on her chair slightly, Jack gently put a hand over hers and gave it a reassuring squeeze. She smiled. "I guess…" she mumbled shyly looking at Andy.
"Look, Andrew" Jack straightened up placing his free hand over the table, "we know it wasn't really nice hiding this and all, and we'll make it up to you guys someday…" He stopped for a moment then added lower, "Maybe." He looked at his friend with a serious expression on his face. "So… can you keep quiet about it just for a little longer?"
Andy analyzed him for a moment. "Why?"
Jack shrugged nonchalant. "Just want this to be between the two of us—and now you, I guess—before we go public and shit goes down."
Andy's eyes widened in surprise and he had to pinch himself not to start grinning at the other guy. He coughed in his hand and cleared his throat discretely. "Alright."
"Really?"
"If that's what you want…" It was now Andy's time to shrug. He pulled his chair back standing up. "I may be mad at all the betrayal thing but I'm also happy for you two." He gave them a genuine smile.
"Just try to find better hiding places if you don't want to get caught again," Andy said before turning and leaving them alone.
They watched in silence as Andy left in a mixture of feelings. "I don't wanna be a know-it-all now," Elsa said as she heard the door to the library closing. She turned to face him with contempt. "But I told you someone would see us…"
He replied by leaning closer and pressing their lips together, kissing her gently, and she could feel the smirk on his lips.
"How much of an idiot can you be?" her eyes were hard on him, but she was smiling.
Jack laughed wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Thank you."
She rested her head in the crook of his neck. "It wasn't a compliment."
Hey guys
Here's the thing, I haven't been able to write much lately. You know when you're hungover and your head hurts and your bones feel like jello? Yeah, I've been feeling that way for a month, maybe. And I'm not even drinking. I guess I'm just busy, tired and haven't been sleeping, nor eating very well.
You guys seemed to like the previous chapter. Shout out to Eirini, who read all the chapters and reviewed all of them in two or three days.
I've been thinking about this lately, but... I don't use the usual Rise of the blah, blah, blah dragons characters as my main characters. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Do you think the story would be better with Merida, Rapunzel and I-don't-know-who-else-is-part-of-the-crew?
I don't know when I'll be back, my constant tiredness makes me unmotivated to write. But I will be back. Probably.
