Author Note
I've abandoned my other Dragon Age stories and I have decided to do Inquisitor Gothic.
I think it will work because I can tell you all about what happened to Mage Gothic and Warden Gothic in this story. Varric can tell Inquisitor Gothic all about the Champion of Kirkwall, and then he can get the true story from the Champion himself. Leliana was with Warden Gothic so she can tell him of that Gothic's adventures.
This way it will be like having three stories in one.
Not sure if I should take down Warden Gothic the story. It contrasts cannon for Dragon Age Inquisition
Anyway here is a rough draft for the first chapter.
Inquisitor Gothic
Part 1
Chapel - Haven
I was experiencing the moment between being asleep and being awake. It sometimes happened and I got a few seconds when I could vividly dream. Sadly it was ruined by the fact that I was having a nightmare. Spiders were chasing me as I ran towards someone who as glowing gold.
Thankfully the bad dream came to an end and I began to stir. My senses started to fed me information and I didn't like what they were telling me. That made it tempting to try to go back to sleep, but I was too uncomfortable for that.
When I woke up fully I found that I was lying on a stone floor, and it took me a minute to make out what was around me. Where ever it this place was, it was cold, damp and gloomy. That didn't tell me much, but the fact that the room was barely lit by flaming torches meant that I was somewhere primitive.
Which was very wrong because I didn't live in dank cell. I lived in a proper house that had proper lights and no nasty bugs crawling around. Also I didn't sleep on what looked to be a pile of hay. This was all very wrong and I didn't like it one bit.
That was when I noticed that there was another source of light. Something glowed green on my hand and while this should have freaked me out all I felt about it was curious. So I turned my palm and inspected the source of the green illumination. As I watched the green glow intensified, and for a moment it felt like someone had just stabbed me in the hand.
Then the door to the chamber opened, and a woman entered. I felt a chill run through me when I saw the anger in her eyes, and then another as I recognized the woman. I didn't know her name, but I knew she was a Seeker and that she had been the one to get all the details about what had happened at Kirkwall out of a dwarf named Varric.
The woman narrowed her eyes as she looked at me, and then she walked around to stand behind me. As she did that she also spoke to me.
"Tell me why we shouldn't kill you now?" said the dangerous woman.
I really didn't know what to say that as I was still processing everything. It was pretty clear to me that I was somehow in Dragon Age Inquisition and since I had the green glowing thing in my right hand then that meant I was the Inquisitor. That was all completely impossible, yet all the evidence around me suggested otherwise.
"The conclave is destroyed. Everyone who attended is dead" the Seeker was now saying "Everyone that is except for you, and we don't even know who you are".
She then grabbed my wrist, yanking it up up into the air so the green energy partly lit up the room.
"Explain this!" she then demanded.
Sadly for me I had no idea how to how to do that I had no memory of getting the mark. Although I did know what it was and what it could do.
Assuming I could figure out how to use it meant that I had a powerful tool literally in the palm of my hand.
"I can't" I muttered.
My words hadn't been meant for her I had been thinking about what I could and couldn't do with the 'anchor'.
"What do you mean you can't?" I was asked.
Truthfully it was possible for me to at least partly explain what the green glowing thing was. But if I went and told the Seeker what I knew, that would just led to her wondering how I knew so much.
"I don't know what it is, or how it got there" I lied.
She seemed to sense that I was being honest with her.
"You're lying" she stated.
For a moment I thought she might hit me, only a hooded woman then pulled the Seeker back.
"We need him, Cassandra" she said.
I couldn't see the hooded figures face, but I knew exactly who she was.
"Do you remember what happened?" Leliana inquired of me "How all of this began?"
I decided to tell at least some of the truth.
"What I remember is running" I told Leliana "These things were chasing me, and then there was this person made of golden light"
It had been a spirit of some sort if memory served,
"Go to the forward camp, Leliana. I will take him to the rift" Cassandra then said.
Given that they knew nothing about me they were taking a big risk by taking me to then breach, but given that demons were pouring out a portal to the Fade they had to do something.
(Line Break)
Above where the Temple of Sacred Ashes had once stood was a giant green swirling thing. It was a hole to the Fade hanging there in the sky,
"We call it 'the Breach.' It's a massive rift into the world of demons that grows larger with each passing hour" the Seeker informed me "It's not the only such rift. Just the largest. All were created by the explosion at the conclave".
And I had the only thing in the world that could close them, which was good for me and it made me useful enough to keep alive.
"Unless we act, the Breach may grow until it swallows the world"
Then my hand suddenly felt as if had been dipped in molten metal. I screamed out in pain and collapsed to the ground.
"Each time the Breach expands, your mark reacts" Cassandra said as she helped me get to my feet "It may be the key to stopping this, but there isn't much time"
I knew what I had to do so I started walking towards the breach.
"Then you'll help?" the Seeker asked.
Cassandra's eyes were full of hope.
"I'll do what I can" was all I could promise.
As we got moving I couldn't help but notice that people were staring at me. Their expressions ranged from looks of mere contempt to outright hostility. But I knew that soon they would be seeing me in a very different way. Assuming of course that I didn't get myself killed.
"They have already decided your guilt" Cassandra said to me as we walked past what could turn into a lynch mob "They need to. The people of Haven mourn our Most Holy, Divine Justinia, head of the Chantry. The Conclave was her idea".
In my view the whole thing was like being surrounded by Catholics after being accused of killing the Pope.
"The Conclave was a chance to forge a peace between the mages and templars" the Seeker went on to say "She brought their leaders together. Now, they are dead. But we must think beyond ourselves. As she did"
That was when I noticed that I hadn't been bound. Not that it mattered really as if I did try to run I'd be cut down, if not by the Seeker then by the rather upset locals.
"There will be a trial. I can promise no more than that" my escort was now telling me.
Given that I was not only innocent but also from another world I didn't think they had to the right to put me on trail. Sadly my opinion wouldn't be taken into account.
On the other hand if I started closing breaches then I'd become a hero and everyone's attitude towards me would change.
"Come. It is not far" Cassandra then instructed.
That was when I realised that I didn't know how to get to the breach. I could see it but there was direct path to it.
"Are we going right to the breach" I asked.
I was still having trouble processing all of this and in my confusion I'd forgotten what was suppose to happen next.
"Your... mark must be tested on something smaller than the Breach" the Seeker told me.
That made sense as I didn't even know how to close a rift.
"Let's go" I said.
Then we walked through the gate and into the valley. We were about halfway up the path when my hand started to hurt again, the pain was so bad that Cassandra had to help me get back to my feet.
"The pulses are coming faster now. The larger the Breach grows, the more rifts appear, the more demons we face".
We kept moving and I chided myself for not focusing on the here and now as I was caught by surprise when the bridge beneath us collapsed.
When I picked myself up I saw the Seeker draw her blade as a demon materialized nearby. Seeing the creature convinced me that this was all real as what was before was more horrible than anything I could imagine and even more gruesome than what was shown in the game. The thing smelled terrible and merely looking at it filled with a sense of wrongness.
"Stay behind me" my escort ordered me.
That was when another demon appeared, this one was between Cassandra and I. Once it had fully materialised it moved towards me, and I didn't think it wanted a hug.
I reacted rather than think I saw a small sword and grabbed it. When I did green energy left my mark. It seemed to dance up and down the blade like electricity of some sort.
When the demon got close to me I lashed out and the blade caused the unnatural thing to wince in pain, or that was the impression I got. Then while once more acting without though I stabbed the demon.
Green energy moved from the weapon and into the Fade creature and it evaporated, for lack of a better term.
"Drop your weapon" the Seeker then commanded me "Do it now!"
I didn't know how much of that she had just seen and since I didn't know if I could do it again it didn't seem like a good idea to get into another fight.
"Have it your way" I said.
I began to slowly place the blade on the ground.
"Wait" Cassandra then instructed me "I should remember you agreed to come willingly".
It was a good thing she let me remained armed as severaldemons blocked their path, and even more fell from the sky. Fortunately for me the anchor seemed to imbue my weapon with some sort of power that made defeating the horrid creatures much easier.
"We're getting closer to the rift" the Seeker told me "I can hear fighting"
Somehow how I was able to keep pace even though I wasn't physically that fit and soon we were fighting even more scary things from the Fade.
As soon as the last demon had fallen an elven mage, whose name escaped me right now, grabbed my wrist and aimed my hand at the rift.
"Quickly, before more come through" the elf said.
I felt a surge of energy flow out of me and two beams of green light flowed into the rift. If the mage hadn't been holding my arm I would have collapsed as it very draining to close the portal.
"Whatever magic opened the Breach in the sky also placed that mark upon your hand" the elf said once the rift was gone "I theorized the mark might be able to close the rifts that have opened in the Breach's wake - and it seems I was correct".
If I recalled correctly the mage knew a lot more about what was going on than he should. Not that I was fit to judge as I also knew far more than I should. However I could judge him for being a lying bastard as he was no more a mage than I was. However that was something I could worry about later on.
"Meaning it could also close the Breach itself" the Seeker said
Well it could, but not without help.
"Possibly" conceded the magic user "If so it seems that you hold the key to our salvation"
There was a coughing noise and I turned to see a dwarf adjusting his glove. Seeing Varric in the flesh made me smile as he was a fictional character I'd always wanted to met.
"Here I thought we'd be ass-deep in demons forever" he said before introducing himself "Varric Tethras: Rogue, storyteller, and occasionally unwelcome tagalong. Although right now I'm a prisoner, just like you".
You knew things were bad when they let captives out to fight.
"I brought you here to tell your story to the Divine." Cassandra corrected the dwarf "Clearly that is no longer necessary"
Which I figured was her way of saying he wasn't a prisoner any more.
"Lucky for you, considering current events" the dwarf said "You need all the help you can get".
Truer words had never been spoken.
"Your help is appreciated, Varric, but..."
The dwarf cut her off.
"Have you been in the valley lately, Seeker?" Varric asked of the short haired warrior Your soldiers aren't in control anymore. You need me"
Instead of replying the Seeker stared at the small man, and then made a disgusted noise before turning away.
"My name is Solas, if there are to be introductions. I am pleased to see you still live" the elf then said
As was I.
"He means, 'I kept that mark from kill you while you slept,'" Varric informed me.
While I should have been grateful for that I was not as I knew that the elf had his ulterior motives for his actions.
"You seem to know a great deal about it" I said while trying to keep my voice neutral.
I'd played Dragon Age Inquisition to the end so I knew that Solas was actually one of the elven gods, and that he was a least partly responsible for all this madness.
Not that knowing this did me any good as I had no proof, and even if I did there was nothing I could as he was a sort of god,
"Solas is an apostate," Cassandra then told me.
For me the word apostate meant: one who has forsaken his religion or faith, but in this case it referred to a mage who was outside the control of the Chantry.
"Technically all mages are now apostates, Cassandra" the elf said before turning his attention back to me "My travels have allowed me to learn much of the Fade, far beyond the experience of any Circle mage. I came to offer whatever help I could with the Breach. If it is not closed, we are all doomed, regardless of our origin".
Solas had made eye contact with when saying that last part, which made me wonder if he knew that I was exactly from
"Cassandra, you should know that the magic involved here is unlike any I have seen" the elf told the warrior "Your prisoner is no mage, and I find it difficult to imagine any mage having such power".
While having magical powers might be helpful not being a mage was good right now as there were demons everywhere and I did not want to end up as an abomination.
"Understood" Cassandra replied.
The Seeker then gestured towards something
"We must get to the forward camp quickly" she said.
I was for one was not looking forward to more violence. I'd never used a sword outside of play-fighting, so I had no idea of what to do other than to stick them with the pointy end.
(Line Break)
"Another rift!" I heard someone shout as we got close to the forward camp.
I didn't relish the prospect of closing another gateway to the Fade as the only reason I was standing now was because I'd chugged down a few stamina potions.
"You must seal it." Solas said to me" and do it quickly."
I decided that I would do it so I requested that everyone keep the demons busy while I blasted the strange portal thing with my new super power.
"Hurry" came Solas's voice. "Use the mark."
I raised my arm and green light flowed from her hand. Once again, the rift flickered, and then it vanished. It was easier the second time I was able to stay standing once the deed was done.
"The rift is gone. Open the gate!" the Seeker then shouted out.
A lot of people were staring at me right now, and I didn't like it even though this lot had looks of awe rather hostility.
"Right away, Lady Cassandra" a solider replied.
When we got inside the camp we all saw that Leliana was arguing with some block
"You made it" the red head said before introducing me to the man "Chancellor Roderick, this is... well he's another Gothic I suppose"
I assumed she meant Goth, which made sense given the way I was dressed but how she knew that term was a complete mystery to me.
"As Grand Chancellor of the Chantry, I hereby order you to take this criminal to Val Royeaux for execution" the Chancellor ordered the Seeker
While I had been assured a trail I knew this jerk just wanted me dead. I would make him pay for that one day.
"Order me" Cassandra said while giving the man her scary glare. "You are a glorified clerk. A bureaucrat, nothing more".
I could sense an argument coming, and I knew we had time for such things. These issues had to be sorted out later.
"Excuse me, isn't closing the Breach the more pressing issue?" I asked.
It times of disaster human being had the ability to put aside differences and work together. Sadly we also had the bad habit of trying to assign blame when bad things happened.
"You brought this on us in the first place" the Chancellor.
I figured it was best to ignore him from this point on.
"We can stop this before it's too late" I then "Get me to the breach and I'll try to close it".
Actually I would only be able to disable the portal to the Fade, but that would be enough for now.
"How?" asked Roderick "You won't survive long enough to reach the temple, even with the help of the soldiers"
At this point everyone else was making an effect to also ignore the annoying bureaucrat. Which meant I was able to see that Leliana was going out of her way not to look at me.
"We must get to the temple. It's the quickest route" the Seeker offered.
Leliana shook her head at Cassandra.
"But not the safest" she debated Our forces can charge as a distraction while we go through the mountains"
"We lost contact with an entire squad on that path. It is too risky" the Seeker replied
While they wasted time I inspected the mark on my hand. It no longer hurt, which meant either that letting all the energy out had calmed it down, or that I was somehow adapting to its presence.
"How do you think we should proceed?" someone then asked me.
The mountain path might be safer, but I got the sense that we were running out of time. The breach was growing.
"I say we charge" I said.
(Line Break)
Bones and charred corpses littered the ground, they all looked as if they had died on their knees and I didn't any of them had died easily, but I forced myself not to think about that. I had a job to do I needed to focus.
"That is where you walked out of the Fade, and our soldiers found you" the Seeker told me "They say a woman was in the rift behind you. No one knows who she was".
It had been the now dead divine if I recalled correctly. What differed from the game was that I had the vague impression that someone else had been there as well. A hooded figure.
"You're here. Thank the Maker."
The former companion to the Warden who had ended the Blight was very stealthy I hadn't seen her leave our little group and I hadn't seen her rejoin it either.
"Leliana, have your men take up positions around the temple" the Seeker ordered.
Upon that command more people I hadn't seen until now disappeared into the shadows, they might as well have cast spells of invisibility.
"This is your chance to end this. Are you ready?" the warrior woman then inquired of me.
Actually I was as I knew there was a big scary Pride Demon to fight. I'd been able to defeat a few Shades, but I knew that what we would soon face was a lot more dangerous.
"I'll try" I said.
Solas then pointed at a rift that was inside the temple itself.
"This rift was the first" he told me "and it is the key. Seal it, and perhaps we seal the Breach."
We moved quickly and when we got to the portal thing it showed us what had happened to the Divine which would handily prove my innocence.
"Now is the hour of our victory"
The voice seemed to come from no where, but at the same time it was everywhere.
"Bring forth the sacrifice"
"What are we hearing?" Cassandra asked Solas.
Why she thought he would know was yet another mystery. She treated like an expert, but since these rifts were brand new then there should be no experts on them. Yet no one questioned how the elf knew so much.
"At a guess: the person who created the Breach" Solas answered.
Varric was the only one not paying attention the swirly green thing.
"This stuff is red lyrium" the dwarf informed us "Whatever you do, don't touch it"
Not touching the glowing red rocks was good advice.
"Keep the sacrifice still"
There were no images as of yet.
"Someone help me"
The voice suddenly changed to a female on.
"That is Divine Justinia"
Then then rift shifted, and imaged formed to show The Divine, held in some kind of trap. And then to show me, looking very confused, entering the room. The Divine told me to run to warn someone and
"You were there. Who attacked? And the Divine, is she...?"
I never got the chance to answer those questions. Not that I could as I didn't understand things either, at least no fully.
"Was this vision true? What are we seeing?" the Seeker demanded.
Again I was denied the chance to say anything.
"Echoes of what happened here" the sort of god said.
We all turned to Solas.
"The Fade bleeds into this place" he explained "This rift is not sealed, but it is closed. I believe that with the mark, the rift can be opened, and then sealed properly and safely. However, opening the rift will likely attract attention from the other side"
Things from 'the other side' were never friendly. There were would tentacles involved I was sure of it.
"Prepare for battle" a male voice ordered.
I made my palm face the rift and power surged out of my hand. It took so much effort to open it that I also feel over yet again.
"Now," Cassandra yelled
When my eyesight cleared I saw arrows bounce off the demon's spikey skin and even spells didn't seem to do much hard. I willed the green energy into my blade and then like a mad man, which I could be, I charged the demon and slashed. The 'anchor' did a lot more than close rifts it somehow allowed me to attack demons in very way that caused them great harm even while using normal weapons.
I didn't slay the demon, but I did harm enough that the elf's spells were able to banish the horrid creature and the warriors made short work of the lesser demons that had made an appearance.
When they were gone I attempted to close the rift. Energy surged once more out of the strange mark and while it was hard to see I saw the rift shift into impossible shapes.
Suddenly the rift seemed to burst, and darkness claimed me.
