Chapter 34
Christi's view
It was time for a long hunt. I desperately needed it. Lately, I had been snacking on the deer around here, but you can only have so much deer. This was sort of a snap decision, but Melissa would know what I was doing. I walked past her and out the door.
It was four o'clock A.M. I was planning on going far away from the area for the day. Maybe out of state. Who knows? Just as long as I get carnivore blood I am good. Before I went out of civilization, I needed to get some back up clothes. I wasn't the cleanest when I drank blood, and my shield couldn't prevent blood from coming on my clothes. So I had a bunch of ruined clothes. And while I could use bleach to get the blood out, when I fed on carnivores they just liked to tear the clothes in feeble attempts to get me off of them. That is the only downfall to feeding on carnivores. Bears are the worst at ruining clothes, since they are like twice my size.
So, I stopped at the local Wal-Mart and bought about three outfits. I looked at all the clothes and chose some that could handle a few tears for a while. The flimsy clothes were out of the question when I hunted.
I bought the clothes and stuffed them in my backpack. I walked out of town and when the forest enclosed me, I bolted.
It was so amazing to run! Exhilarating. The animals around me didn't have time to hide or grow nervous before I passed them. Leaves didn't stir as I ran. Running was almost like floating in a way.
I was careful not to give into my senses just yet. I had to make sure absolutely no humans were around.
My thoughts turned dark when I thought of why. Esme and I had both made that mistake one night when hunting almost four years ago.
I pushed the thoughts from my mind and breathed in. No humans. But was that a bear I smelled? My lips pulled up into a smirk.
Blood dropped from my chin. I used my ruined shirt to clean it off. There was a creek nearby. I walked over to it and washed my faced of the smeared blood. That was better.
The sun had been down for a while, and I had a sloshy feeling from drinking so much blood. I was ready to go back. I quickly dressed into my last outfit. I had lost my shoes hours ago with how much running I had done. But that wasn't as bad as wearing a bloody torn shirt into
town. That would be a bit terrifying to the humans.
Alright, time to go.
I ran towards Washington. I was just out of state. Getting back to Forks would take about an hour, give or take.
There was only a small town between me and Forks. Well, that and a bunch of trees. The night was dark, but I could still see. It was kind of eerie to see in pitch black. But hey, I am supposed to be a night creature.
When I ran up to the town, a scent of blood hit me. Worry for the human grew and I turned my direction to him. Or her. Whatever gender this person was. I ran up to the human. She was unconscious and bleeding from the temple. Her heartbeat was beating weakly. She needed to be in a hospital. I picked her up gently. It appeared as if someone hit her on the head with a bat or something. There was no other scent on her.
Who did this to her? I was angry at how cruel and sick a person could be.
As fast as I could, I ran to the town. Once in town, I couldn't chance being seen. I slowed to a walk. Although, no one was out and about, someone could catch me. And that would lead me where? Nothing good. That's for sure.
"Who are you?" the woman asked feebly.
"My name is Christi. I found you bleeding and I'm taking you to the hospital."
"No, he'll beat me. I'm not supposed to go anywhere. . ." she trailed off.
I grit my teeth and walked faster. How dare that man!
"Don't worry about him. You will be okay," I assured her.
She coughed and shook her head.
"Please, let me go. I'm ready to see my daughter."
Confusion hit me and then it cleared when the woman looked down to her stomach. I stopped and examined her. She had been pregnant. And I could feel the dead child in her.
The woman was bleeding in other places then the head.
She wouldn't make it through the night even if I took her to the hospital. There was nothing I could do as she lay dying in my arms.
If I could cry, I would be sobbing. The poor woman was in pain.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" I asked gently.
The woman could barely talk to me. Her eyes were rolling in the back of her head.
Her heartbeat grew fainter and fainter.
I made sure she didn't touch the ground. And then the beating came to an end and her breathing ceased. I carried her body to the woods and placed her under a pine tree. The ground was dry and the area was peaceful.
"I am so sorry." I whispered before turning and leaving.
I was filled with grief as I walked back to the town. I was bloody again from the woman. I grimaced when I saw other people walking across the street from me. They were loud and laughing.
They caught a look at me and boomed with laughter. My fists balled up and I kept walking. Those men wouldn't be like this if they dared approach me.
But they are stupid and I draw them in like a magnet. Stupid vampire charms.
"Hey! What's your name?" one smiled at me with sick eyes.
They walked over to me and started surrounding me. I was so not in the mood.
"Aw! She's angry. They are the best when they are angry."
I turned on the man who spoke and snarled. I caught a faint scent that was on the men. My eyes were most likely turning black.
"You killed her." I hissed.
There were three men and in one second I had two of them held up by the necks. The third was on the ground surprised with my speed.
"W-what are you?" one said with fear. I threw them on the ground. "Your worst nightmare."
I knocked them unconscious and left them in front of the police station in town. They were a well-known group in town. Surly the police would be interested with having them at their doorstep.
I walked to an ally and sped off to get out of the town. Ahead there was a road. I would have to slow. When I made an abrupt stop something fell from my bag. Wonderful. I turned and picked up the keys. Woops.
My head snapped up to a figure falling from above. I knew it was another vampire in an instant. Before he could land, I jumped up and grabbed the figures throat. Once I had a good grip, I pushed off the wall and hurled the vampire to the ground.
I snarled at him. "Who are you, and why did you attack me?"
The guy was shocked. He looked at my fierce eyes and answered without difficulty.
"My name is Elijah. I smelled the human blood and attacked before I noticed."
I released my grip. "I'm not that humane. I mean I kill animals and-"
"Why are your eyes yellow? I've never seen a vampire with like that before."
I smiled and said, "That, my dear friend, is what happens when a vampire drinks animal blood."
Elijah's eyes widened. "You can do that?"
I laughed at his shock. "Yes, drinking animal blood is possible. Beats being a murderer."
Elijah chuckled uneasily.
I slapped my face. "I am so sorry. I didn't mean it like that. It came out wrong."
"It's fine. Um . . . I've just never thought of it that way. Humans have been the only option up to . . . now."
A car passed us on the road.
"You want to head into the woods?" I asked. I didn't want to stick around in this town much longer.
"A pretty girl asks me to follow her into the woods. This is the total setup for a murder."
"Unless, the guy charmed the girl with his good looks and made her set up her own murder by asking him into the woods where he keeps his illegal weapons."
Elijah smirked. "But what if the girl found the stash and made the guy charm her? Only to have the guy murdered by his own knife."
"You kept up with that?" I asked. Wow. I always confuse Melissa with all the time. She can never keep up with my ramblings. Even Alice had a hard time.
"Yes. I see you're a rambler?"
I walked away from him. "I'll never tell."
He caught up. "So tell me more about this hunting animals. Is it hard?"
Elijah looked at me with his crimson eyes. Being honest, he was pretty hot. He had long, dark hair and a nice chiseled face. He wasn't very tall though, but hey, he's not short.
Less than a second passed before I answered.
"Not really, but I started right off the bat with the animal diet."
Elijah seemed intrigued. "Did your creator have this diet as well?"
I nodded. "Carlisle is the one who thought of it. Well, actually, it was our cousins. I think. Um . . . It's not very clear."
"Cousins?"
Crap! I wasn't making any sense.
"Uh, you see, my family or coven, we consider our closest friends our cousins. Kind of complicated."
Elijah was chewing on that. He looked cute like that. I felt drawn to him somehow.
"What about you?" I wondered, "What's your story?"
Elijah sighed. "What kind of vampire are you?"
I grinned. "One with a crazy life."
I did have a crazy life! And yet, it all seemed normal by now.
"So, how big is your coven?" Elijah wondered.
I stopped walking. "Eh, it's complicated."
"Oh."
"Yeah. So you a nomad? Or do you have a place?"
He smirked. "I guess I'm a nomad. Don't stay anywhere permanently."
"Well, how is the nomad life?" I asked, interested.
He chuckled. "Boring."
"Wow! Must be fascinating to having a normal life," I said.
Elijah rolled his eyes. "Oh, yeah! I have a normal life. I am a vampire."
I sighed. "I meant for a vampire."
We walked in silence. There wasn't anything left I had to say. We did stare at each other, though.
This feeling I had was so strange. Like something has finally bloomed.
The forest was quiet as we walked by. The creatures in here felt our presence and decided to stay hidden and quiet.
Elijah finally opened his mouth. "Christi, will you show me how to hunt animals?"
I beamed and nodded eagerly. "Yes, of course!"
We sped off into the night.
Soooo . . . what do think? can you guess what will happen?
by the way I put in the death of the woman to show Christi can't be perfect and save the day all the time. sorry if that upset some of you.
should I continue with Christi or switch back to Melissa? review and tell me!
