Chapter 38

We continued- or rather, Loki continued and I stumbled along behind him as fast as I could -through the snaking, dank tunnels. I could hardly see and it bothered me to no ends. I wondered if this was how Clint felt now, being blind and confused. Clint. My heart twisted for him; it still felt like I was responsible for his disability.

Abruptly, Loki came to a halt. I wavered, unsure if I should ask him what we stopped for. He made the decision for me.

Thanos is close, he whispered, but it wasn't out loud. Which means the Cube is even closer. Stay close to me, and if it need be, you must run."

Unsure of how to communicate like he did, I formed a thought in my mind. I hoped it worked, but felt ridiculous. I'm not leaving.

He chuckled out loud, and I knew he had heard me. Oh yes you are.

We came to a fork in the tunnel, split by a roaring stream of water. Sewer water. I crinkled my nose, trying to avoid thoughts like that. Loki paused, tilting his head. I waited.

"I go the right," he said eventually. He turned, eyes meeting mine in the dim lighting that filtered in from the ceiling. I realized we must be under an exit of sorts.

"We go to the right, you mean." I corrected.

He gave me a half smile that didn't reach his eyes. "No Sam-"

"You're not ditching me already, I won't let you!" I yelled, cutting him off.

I clenched my fists, eyes burning holes in him. He stepped forward, taking my face roughly in his hands. For a moment, I was dumb founded. When I found my words, I couldn't seem to bring them up. He lowered his head, the cold off his skin chilling mine but not quite touching it.

His lips were the same as I remembered, cold and strong. I responded instantly, the tension rolling off me as I relaxed into him. Except instead of ending like it usually did, it took a different turn. Loki raised his scarred hands, one knotting in my hair and the other cradling my face. His body was alive and unyielding, shoving me against the wall. I let out a surprised huff, his teeth tugging on my lower lip.

It was wild. Erotic. Wonderful.

Yet just as suddenly as it started, it had ended. I looked up at him, trying to catch my breath. He was already collected, holding himself about a foot away from me. I envied his ability to recover so quickly.

"What the hell was that?" I asked, breath still coming in gasps.

"I may be a God of sorts but I am just a man. There's some things I can't control." He grinned to himself.

"I find that hard to believe,"

We stood in silence for a few moments, then he leaned forward again. I steeled myself slightly, not sure what to expect. This time, he lightly pressed his mouth to my forehead, much like he'd done in the hotel. "Take care of yourself," he murmured, eyelashes fluttering against my cheek.

"I will." I promised, but I was unsure if I could keep it.

He nodded, moving quickly as he usually did. There was a grating sound, and a rusty metal ladder appeared. Loki patted it. I walked over to it, hoisting myself onto it. His fingers hovered, resting on my waist briefly as I touched the man hole covering. Eventually, I managed to push it to the side enough for me to crawl out.

I looked down at him, his pale skin and black hair illuminated by the light of the above ground. He nodded, and then was gone.

As I pulled myself out, I wondered if that was really the last time I'd ever see Loki. That kiss in the tunnel had felt like a goodbye. An unspoken goodbye.

I wasn't ready for goodbye.
