Chapter 38: Asylum

"Olivia!" Rory whispered, shaking Olivia's shoulders as she lay on her back and she groaned, her eyes fluttering open when she awoke. She lifted a hand to her head as she sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Olivia, are you ok?"

"Fine, I think," she muttered before she chanced to look around the room…and froze with terror.

She was in a dark, dank room…surrounded by Daleks. They looked ancient, but it did nothing to ease her terror.

"W-Where's the Doctor?" she whispered to Rory, noticing the Daleks weren't moving but not risking a louder tone, her eyes darting around at them.

"I don't know," Rory whispered as well, looking around at the Daleks, and she barely heard his response over the thumping of her heart in her ears. "I only found you when I woke up. He and Amy must have landed on the surface."

He helped her stand and she latched onto to his arm, their eyes never leaving the Daleks still, and surrounding them.

"We gotta get out of here," she whispered.

Rory began walking, slowly, Olivia still clinging to his arm, but she gripped it tighter when he approached one of the sleeping Daleks.

"What are you doing?!" she hissed as he reached out to touch it.

When his finger landed on the metal he jumped back, expecting it to wake, but when it didn't move, he reached out again.

"Are you suicidal?!" Olivia hissed again as Rory shoved the Dalek slightly to make it roll back then shrugged.

"It looks dead," he assured her, reaching into his pocket for a small torch and turned it on, letting her cling to him again as he led her around the Daleks.

"Doesn't mean it is," she whispered, her eyes darting around the room in fright. "I need a distraction. What happened with you and Amy?"

"Really?" he blurted in a hushed tone. "That's what you wanna talk about?"

"Unless you wanna deal with a trembling mess on the floor then, yes, that's what I wanna talk about," Olivia shot back. "Are you fighting?"

"We're divorced," he replied as they still moved through the room and Olivia stared at him in wide-eyed disbelief.

"You what?" she breathed as he didn't look at her.

"She kicked me out," he shrugged.

"Hey, don't be casual about this?! How can you get divorced?!"

"It just happened, ok?"

"But, why?"

Rory sighed, stopping to face her and she could tell it was hurting him to talk about it, but she had to know, because she knew the Doctor would try fix it.

"She can't have kids," he replied, making Olivia's eyes widen. "We went to the doctors, and they said she can't have kids. Must've happened at Demon's Run. Anyway, we fought about it and she…kicked me out."

Olivia felt tears coming to her eyes. She could only imagine how they both felt, after having their first child taken from them, not being able to see her until decades later, then not being able to have any more. Olivia's mind was reeling and her heart aching for her friends.

"Can we concentrate on getting out of here now?" Rory hoped, and Olivia nodded before clutching his arm again as he led the way through the huge room.

"The Doctor will fix it, Rory," she whispered, hugging his arm. "Everything. I know he will."

"You're starting to sound like Amy now," he smirked.

"Or maybe Amy sounds like me," she smiled back, trying to keep her attention away from the Daleks but he approached another, making her heart race in panic. "Rory, we've gotten this far, don't mess with 'em!"

"They're not moving," he insisted, stepping right in front of one and adding, "I think they're dead."

He used the eyestalk to turn the Dalek's head and examine it…but a second later the head turned back to the position it had been sitting in on its own, making Olivia's breathing come in shallow as Rory's eyes widened. He winced and started slowly backing away but his foot hit something metal, making the clang echo through the room and Olivia's nails dug into his arm as they both stared at the Dalek in front of them. Olivia let out a terrified shudder as the light in the eyestalk came glowing, slowly to life. The head turned and Olivia noticed other Dalek eyes flicker to life as well.

"Rory…" she shuddered in fright.

"E-E-E-E-E-E-Ex…" the Dalek sputtered, making her swallow hard as her eyes shot wider.

"What?" Rory blurted. "Sorry, what?"

"Shut up," Olivia warned.

"E-E-E-E-E-Ex…" it tried again.

"Eggs?" Rory guessed, glancing to the balls in its armor and aiming his light at them. "You mean those things?"

"Rory, please shut up," Olivia urged again in a panicked tone.

"Eeeeeeeeeeex," the Dalek drawled, making Rory frown, wanting to satisfy the Dalek to keep it from killing them.

"I don't…I don't know what you want," he confessed then found one of the balls on the floor and pointed to it. "Those things, are those things eggs?"

"Rory, no," Olivia growled as he pulled away from her grasp to pick the thing up and hand it to the Dalek.

"This? You want this?"

"Ex…ter…min…ate," the Dalek slurred, making Rory drop the ball and back away toward Olivia again.

The Daleks turned to them, all chanting the infamous word before Rory grabbed Olivia's arm and pulled her with him just as a Dalek shot at them. She screamed and ducked her head down as he dragged her around the room, dodging the shots and trying to find cover.

"Run!" a now familiar voice shouted from the PA system once they'd found cover. "The door at the end! Run for it! They're waking up, but they're slow. The door at the end, just run for it! Now, now, now!"

"Come on, Olivia!" Rory shouted, gripping tightly to her hand as he dragged her toward the door and she ran without question as the Daleks still shot at them.

They both slid under the door that was halfway open just as the Daleks caught up with them and the door slammed shut as they leaned against the wall to catch their breath.

"You ok?" Rory hoped, seeing her curl into a ball against the wall.

"I want the Doctor," she whispered, sounding like a child wanting its parent as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"We'll find him," Rory assured her. "I'm sure he's down here by now, with Amy."

"So, anyway," Oswin chirped over the PA, making Rory jump but Olivia remained in her ball. "I'm Oswin. What do I call you?"

"Uh…Rory," he drawled, trying to remember his own name.

"Lovely name, Rory," Oswin complimented. "First boy I ever fancied was called Rory. Actually, she was called Nina. I was going through a phase. Just flirting to keep you cheerful. Who's that with you?"

"This is Olivia," Rory replied. "She's a friend. Olivia, come on, we've gotta go."

"Ooh, that was the second one I fancied. Again, to keep you cheerful. Is she alright? She looks a bit…out of her depth."

"Daleks terrify her more than anything," Rory explained, trying to get Olivia to stand.

"Join the club."

"Where's the Doctor?" Olivia shuddered, not looking at Rory. "I need him."

"We'll find him," he assured her. "But we have to move."

The Daleks hitting the door they'd just run through made her jump as they shouted, and Rory grabbed her arm to help her stand. She threw her arms around his chest and he let his arm settle around her shoulders as they walked down the hall they found themselves in.

"Ok, any time you wanna start flirting again is fine by me," Rory whispered, directing the comment to Oswin as he led Olivia farther down the hall, the lights starting to blink out and his torch starting to do the same.

"Hey, there, beaky boy," Oswin suddenly hummed.

"If it's a straight choice, I prefer Nina," Rory shot back.

"Loving this. The Nose and the Chin. You two could fence."

Olivia couldn't help but giggle at that as Rory rolled his eyes, turning to look behind them as they walked.

"Got Bright Eyes giggling, at least. There's a door behind you. In there, quickly."

They both turned to see the door she spoke of slid open and they hurried inside before the door shut again. Olivia's eyes darted around the room filled with machinery and a circular raised platform in the center.

"Ok, you're safe for now. Pop your shirt off, Nina. Quick as you like."

"Why?" Rory wondered, beginning the process as Olivia raced to the platform.

"Does there have to be a reason?"

"My thoughts exactly. Oswin," Olivia replied, examining the platform as Rory stopped what he was doing.

"Ah! She speaks! All done being scared?"

"For now," Olivia replied.

"Olivia, what are you doing?" Rory asked, seeing her pull her Sonic out of her jacket and use it on the platform before looking to the results.

"I think I might know what this is," she replied, distractedly as she circled it. "And, if I'm right…we might have an escape plan."

The room suddenly shook, the sound of an explosion in the distance and dirt falling from the ceiling. Rory kept his footing but Olivia stumbled into the platform, nearly falling completely over, but she placed her hands on the glass to steady herself.

"Oswin?" Rory called. "What was that?"

"That was close," Olivia breathed before shoving off the glass and racing toward the door. "That was very, very close."

"Olivia, wait!" Rory shouted as she used her Sonic on the door and ran out of it once it opened, making him race after her.

He followed her back toward the room where they'd landed and Olivia used her Sonic to open that door as well, only to shout in surprise when something sparked at her as she entered, Rory behind her and they both stared at the blown up, certainly dead Daleks around them.

"Oswin, what happened?" Rory asked again. "Who killed all the Daleks?"

Olivia looked to the other side of the room and grinned when she saw the Doctor stepping toward them, Amy draped over his arms, unconscious, and he instantly saw them, answering Rory's question.

"Who do you think?"

"Get her over here," Olivia called, spinning around to head back to the other room Oswin had sent them to, the three right behind her and the Doctor rested Amy on the platform as Olivia shut the door with her Sonic. "What's wrong with her?"

"She lost her wristband," the Doctor explained as she knelt next to him, Rory on the other side of Amy. "The nanocloud is converting her to a Dalek."

"Will sleeping help her?" Rory wondered. "Will it slow down the process?"

"Better hope so," Oswin chimed in. "Because pretty soon she's going to try and kill you."

Their attention turned back to Amy as she groaned awake, blurting, "Ow."

"Still with us?" the Doctor smiled at her.

"Amy, it's me," Rory called. "Do you remember me?"

Without a word Amy slapped him across the face, making Olivia jump with a start as the force of the hit made Rory's head whip to the side.

"She remembers me," Rory confirmed.

"Same old Amy," Olivia smirked as the Doctor stood.

"Do you know how you make someone into a Dalek?" Oswin wondered, her tone full of sorrow. "Subtract love, add anger…doesn't she seem a bit too angry to you?"

"Well, somebody hasn't been to Scotland," Amy shot back as she sat up.

"What about you, Oswin?" Olivia asked one of the cameras. "Why hasn't the nanocloud gotten to you?"

"I mentioned the genius thing, yeah? Oh, sorry. That was the Chin. I'm a genius. Shielded in here."

"Hm, clever of you," the Doctor jumped in. "Now, this place: The Daleks said it was fully automated, but look at it. It's a wreck."

"Well, I've had nearly a year to mess with them and…not a lot else to do."

"A Junior Entertainment Manager hiding out in a wrecked ship hacking the security systems of the most advanced warrior race the universe has ever seen," the Doctor began, pacing around the room. "But, you know what really gets me about you, Oswin? The soufflés. Where do you get milk for the soufflés?" He turned to the other three, asking, "Seriously, is no one else wondering about that?"

"No," Rory blurted as Olivia opened her mouth to reply but quickly shut it when he answered. "Frankly, no. Twice."

"I'm wondering," Olivia assured the Doctor.

"So, Doctor," Oswin called. "I've been looking you up. You're all over the database. Why do the Daleks call you the predator?"

"I'm not a predator," the Doctor smiled into the camera, where he knew Oswin could see them. "Just a man with a plan."

"You've got a plan?"

"We're all ears," Rory chimed in.

"There's a nose joke going if someone wants to pick that one off," Amy slurred, drowsily.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Olivia muttered.

"In no particular order, we need to neutralize the Daleks in this asylum, rescue Oswin from the wreckage, escape from this planet and fix Amy and Rory's marriage."

Amy and Rory looked at each other, but it was Amy who responded.

"Ok, I'm counting three lost causes. Anyone else?" Amy blurted.

"Oswin, there's a Dalek ship in orbit," the Doctor told her.

"Yeah, got it on the sensors."

"The asylum has a forcefield. The Daleks upstairs are waiting for me to turn it off. As soon as I do they'll burn this whole world and us with it. So, Oswin, my question is this: How fast can you drop the forcefield?"

Olivia, Amy and Rory looked to each other in wide-eyed confusion.

"Pretty fast. But why would I?"

"Because this is a teleport," Olivia breathed in realization before hurrying up next to the Doctor and he smiled at her. "This is a teleport, right?"

"Yeah. Internal use only."

"Olivia and I can boost the power, then once the forcefield is down, we can use this to beam us right off this planet," the Doctor explained, grabbing Olivia's hand and hurrying toward the teleport to use his Sonic on it.

"Escape plan," Olivia reiterated with a grin as the Doctor worked.

"But you said when the forcefield is down the Daleks will blow us up," Rory recalled as Olivia knelt down next to the Doctor to speak with the other three.

"We'll have to be quick, yes," the Doctor replied.

"Fine, we'll be quick, but where do we beam to?" Amy wondered.

"The only place within range," the Doctor explained. "The Dalek ship."

"But they'll exterminate us on the spot," Amy replied.

"Oh, so this is the kind of escape plan where you survive about four seconds?" Rory realized.

"What's wrong with four seconds?" the Doctor retorted. "You can do loads in four seconds."

"Oswin, how fast can you drop the field?" Olivia asked, not wanting to think about where they were going to end up, either dead on a ship full of Daleks or dead on a planet full of Daleks.

"I can do it from here…soon as you come and get me."

Olivia frowned as she looked to the Doctor, who stood and stared at the camera.

"No, just drop the forcefield and come to us," he instructed.

"There's enough power in that teleport for one go. Why would you wait for me?"

"Why wouldn't we?" Olivia asked back.

"No idea. Never met you. Sending you a map so you can come get me."

The Doctor rushed toward a computer as Rory looked to the camera.

"This place is crawling with Daleks," he reminded her.

"Yeah, kind of why I'm anxious to leave. Come up and see me some time."

Olivia followed the Doctor as he looked to the map Oswin sent him and whispered, "We're gonna go get her, right?"

"I don't think we have a choice," he murmured before frowning when he felt her arms slip around him, but he said nothing as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders. "I'm sorry you got caught up in this, Liv. I know you hate them."

"Maybe this is the universe telling me I need to conquer my fears?" she whispered.

"The universe can be mean like that," he confessed before kissing the top of her head then grabbed the controls for the teleport and pulled her by the hand toward Amy and Rory.

"Ok, as soon as the forcefield is down, the Daleks will attack," he explained to Rory as he handed him the panel for the teleport. "If it gets too explodey-wodey in here you go without me, ok?"

"And leave you to die?" Rory frowned in wonder as Olivia stared at the Doctor with wide eyes, but he still worked on the panel.

"Oh, don't worry about me," the Doctor assured Rory before grinning up at him. "You're the one beaming up to a Dalek ship to get exterminated."

"Fair point," Rory blurted as the Doctor moved toward the teleport to shuffle himself under it. "Love this plan. What about Amy?"

"Keep her remembering," the Doctor explained, working on something under the glass. "Keep her focused. That will hold back the conversion."

"What do I do?" Amy snapped at him as he shuffled himself out from under the panel and sat up.

"You heard what she said. They're subtracting love. Don't let them."

He stood and made his way to the door, Olivia right behind him, but he stopped before he left the room, hearing her footsteps, and turned to her with a frown.

"No, Olivia, you can't come with me," he told her. "Stay here with Rory and Amy, it's your best chance to get out of here."

"Alright, I'm gonna break this down for you," she shot back, making his frown deepen. "If I had a choice between dying with you on this planet in a huge explosion or dying without you in a Dalek ship, I'd chose right here. On this planet. Because I said I'd spend the rest of my life with you by your side, and that's exactly what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna spend all four seconds of what remains of my life, right next to you. Problem? No? Good. Now let's go get Oswin."

She moved past him and he couldn't help but smirk as he turned to follow her through the door.

"You're getting to be more and more like River, Liv," he smirked, letting her cling to his arm as he stepped next to her.

"Be careful, pretty soon I'll be carrying a gun and handcuffs, too," she muttered, making him chuckle as the door shut behind them and they tip-toed into the hallway.

Her grip on his arm tightened as they slunk through the hall, hearing Daleks from other rooms around them shouting things that didn't make sense, and some things that did. As they inched down the hall, a loud bang sounded from somewhere, making Olivia jump and gasp, one hand grabbing his wrist, but something made her frown, or rather the lack of something did. She looked down and lifted his wrist into view, making them stop and he looked at her in wonder as she met his gaze in horror.

"Where's your wristband?" she shuddered, breathlessly, but when he only smiled down at her she frowned in anger. "What are you smiling about?! You're gonna turn into a Dalek!"

"It doesn't work on Time Lords, sweet Liv," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "I put mine on Amy. She needs it more than I do."

He led them down the hall again and Olivia seemed to realize something as she stared wide eyes at him.

"You're saving their marriage."

"Well, it was on the list, wasn't it?"

"Did Amy tell you why they split up?"

"We were a little busy with the running, Liv."

"She can't have any more children."

His steps faltered, but he continued on, keeping his eyes fixed ahead.

"Well, that's certainly upsetting," he murmured.

"Can you fix that?" she wondered, hopefully.

"I wish I could," he muttered, then added, "We'll talk about this later. Stay close to me, love."

A/N: ok, kind of a spoiler, but not really, but I'm just gonna tell you now, this will be the only time we see Clara...Oswin, whatever her name is, because much as I would LOVE to see how Liv and she would got on or not, I really like her too much to put her in the TARDIS with Liv and the Doctor. i like her as a companion, and I honestly think she would only work if Olivia weren't in the picture. but, i'm keeping more surprises I think you'd like tucked in my pockets and up my sleeve for later. reviews?
