It is the night before Gracie starts school. Logan and Rory have tried to talk to her about it to get her excited about going but Gracie wants nothing to do with it.
"It's time for bed my love." Rory says. "You have school in the morning."
"I don't want to go mommy please." Gracie says yawning.
"You'll have fun and tomorrow you can have a special lunch. What do you want?"
"Papa's burgers." Gracie says climbing onto Rory's lap.
She goes to lay like she did when she would have her bottle as a baby. Grasping Rory's shirt in her hand she lets out another yawn.
"Okay baby. I love you."
"Love you too mama." Gracie says as her eyes close.
"I'll take her to bed." Logan says when he see Gracie sleeping.
He gently takes the sleeping toddler form Rory and carries her upstairs. He tucks her in bed and with a kiss to the forehead he leaves the room.
The next morning Rory and Logan are up getting ready. When Logan is ready he goes downstairs with Bentley to make breakfast.
"Good morning beautiful." Rory says rubbing Gracie's back to wake her. "It's time to get up."
"I sleepy." Gracie says rolling away from Rory.
"You have school today." Rory tells her picking her up.
"No mama." Gracie whines.
Rory dresses Gracie in a cream sweater dress with brown and tan plaid, brown tights and her brown Ugg boots. She put her hair in pigtails.
"Time for breakfast." Rory says taking Gracie downstairs.
"Good morning princess. You look beautiful." Logan says taking her from Rory.
"Good morning daddy." Gracie says resting her head on his shoulder.
"I made your favorite."
"Sweet potato?"
Logan sits Gracie on her chair and gives her a plate of pancakes.
"Thank you." She says.
Rory feeds Bentley while she eats so he would be okay with Mitchum until she got back. As they were finishing up breakfast the doorbell rings. Logan opens it to reveal Mitchum.
"Grandpa." Gracie says running to give him a hug.
"Good morning sweetie. Are you excited for school?"
"No." Gracie tells him.
"At least you're honest." Mitchum says laughing at Gracie's response.
"Thanks for staying with him Mitchum." Rory says coming into the room holding Bentley.
"Anytime." He says smiling at his grandson. "Hey buddy."
"He just finished eating so he'll be fine. We shouldn't be more than an hour." Rory tells Mitchum.
"There's diaper and wipes over there." Logan says point to where they have the diapers stored downstairs. "We have to get going so were not late."
"Be good for grandpa baby boy." Rory says giving Bentley a kiss.
"Bye buddy." Logan says giving Bentley a kiss.
Gracie gives Bentley a kiss and Rory hands him over to Mitchum.
"Bye Gracie have a good day at school." Mitchum says.
"Bye grandpa." Gracie waves.
She takes Rory's hand and with Logan behind them holding her backpack they head for the car.
"How are you doing?" Logan asks Rory.
"I'm a nervous wreak." Rory says taking his hand.
"She'll be fine." He assures giving her hand a squeeze.
"I know but the mom in me can't help but be nervous." She says glancing back at Gracie who is looking out the window kicking her leg.
Pulling up to the school Logan parks. Rory takes Gracie out while Logan gets her bag. He walks around to Rory and Gracie. Taking Rory's hand in his they walk up to the school.
"Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Huntzberger." Carol says standing to shake their hands. "Good morning Mackenzie." She smiles at Gracie who hides her face in Rory's neck.
"She's a little nervous." Logan says.
"I see. Well her class is out there." Carol says pointing to the kids sitting on benches. "They should be heading back soon."
"How cute." Rory says looking at the kid. "Look honey do you want to go sit with them?"
"No mommy." Gracie says. "I want to go home."
"Look Gracie it's time for us to go back ." Logan tells her when he sees the kids getting their things.
"Come on my love." Rory says walking outside to be with her class.
"Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Huntzberger. I'm Ms. Marie. Hi Mackenzie."
"Good to see you again." Logan says shaking her hands.
"Good morning." Rory says.
Walking back to the class Gracie refuses to lift her her from its spot on Rory's shoulder. Outside the kids change their shoes. Logan takes out Gracie's shoes and changes them. In the class Rory and Logan take a seat in the chairs set out for them.
"Do you want to come with me so I can show you where to put your backpack?" The other teacher Ms. Anna asks.
"No."
Rory put Gracie down hoping she would go explore the class but instead she stands between her parents laying her head on Logan's lap.
Various kids were coming up to them wanting to play.
"Look Gracie they want to play with you." Logan tells her.
"No daddy." Gracie says.
"Does she have any allergies?" Ms. Anna asks.
"No." Rory tells her. "Her family picture is in the front pocket of her bag."
"Okay. What name does she go by?" She asks having heard her parents call her Gracie.
"She goes by Gracie." Logan tells her.
"Gracie do you want to color?"
"No."
"You love to color baby." Rory says. "Go we'll be here." Rory encourages.
"I don't want to." Gracie replies stubbornly.
"I hope she's like this when she has her first boyfriend." Rory jokes
"She's not having a boyfriend until she's fifty." Logan says.
"She's toilet trained. When she has to go she takes herself." Rory says. "Please don't teach her to say potty. If she starts saying that I'll never hear the end of it from my mom." Rory says.
"What do you say instead?"
"Either bathroom or toilet."
"We can do that. But we do have other kids here who do say potty so there might be a chance she'll pick it up from them."
"I understand." Rory says looking down at her watch. "Okay love bug can mommy have a kiss?"
"Why?"
"Because it's time for mommy and daddy to go home." Rory explains.
"I want to go too." Gracie says her eyes starting to water.
"I love you baby. I'll be back to pick you up soon." Rory says giving Gracie a kiss.
"Don't go mommy " Gracie cries holding her arms up to be held.
"I love you baby." Logan says giving her a kiss. "I'll see you in a little bit." He assures.
"Please don't go daddy." Gracie cries.
Ms. Marie comes and picks Gracie up.
"Mommy and daddy will be back soon." She tells Gracie.
"I don't want you." Gracie says struggling to get out of her arms. "I want my mommy and daddy."
"Bye baby." Rory says leaving the class quickly.
"Bye princess." Logan says following Rory.
Outside Rory is trying to hold back her tears at hearing Gracie crying for her. Logan pulls her into a hug and gives her a kiss.
"She'll be okay." Logan assures taking her hand and walking to the car.
Once in the car Rory lets the tears out. Logan leans over and pulls her into a hug.
"It's only three hours." Logan says.
"I know." Rory says wiping her eyes. "Let's go before I go in there and get her." Rory says.
Logan starts the car and with her hand in his drives home.
"Mom's coming up to surprise Gracie."
"She'll like that."
They drive in silence the rest of the way home. At the apartment they go upstairs to Bentley.
"How'd it go?" Mitchum asks.
"She wasn't happy." Rory says.
"Hopefully she'll adjust soon." Mitchum says.
"I hope so or Logan's going to be doing the drop offs."
"Great make me the bad guy." Logan teases. "Do you want to come with us one day to meet her teachers? It'll make it less of a hassle when you go to pick her up next week."
"Which day?"
"How about tomorrow? My mom will be here to stay with the baby."
"That's fine with me." Mitchum says.
"Thanks to staying with him. How was he?"
"He was great. We talked for a little bit and then he slept for the rest of the time."
"Good." Rory smiles.
"I'll see you the same time tomorrow." Mitchum says. "I have to get to the office for a last minute conference call."
"Alright dad. Thanks." Logan says walking him to the door. "What time is your mom getting here?"
"Right before we have to get Gracie. She's bringing her Luke's special burgers." Rory says of the slider burgers he makes only for Gracie.
"I'll be working in the office if you need me."
"Okay." Rory says. "Come her baby mommy needs some cuddles." She says picking Bentley up. Bentley smiles at her and snuggles into her chest. "How do you think your sister is doing at school?"
Bentley looks up at her and starts babbling.
"I hope so too." She says giving him a kiss. "Grandma's coming today." She tells Bentley and he babbles more. "I know you like it when grandma comes too."
Rory spends some time with Bentley before feeding him and putting him down to play.
"Hi mom." Rory says opening the door for her a little after eleven.
"Hi babe." Lorelai says giving her a hug. "How was it?"
"Awful." Rory says. "When we were leaving she told us not to go and when we were outside I could here her crying for us."
"Aww Hun." Lorelai says giving her a hug.
"I feel like I'm a bad mom."
"Yore an amazing mom Hun. That little girl loves you so much. And so does this handsome boy." Lorelai said tipping her head to Bentley.
"Hi Lorelai." Logan says coming into the room.
"Hey Logan."
"It's time to go get Gracie." He tells them.
"Yay." Lorelai says happily.
"Tell Logan why you won't come with us to drop her off."
"Because then I get to be super grandma who comes to rescue her." Lorelai says. "I love that I don't have to be the bad guy. I'm the fun grandma that saves her from her mean parents who make her go to school."
"Gee thanks."
"Let's go get my baby."
They all load into the car and Logan drives them to the school. Once he parks they all get out Logan carrying Bentley.
"Mommy, mommy, mommy." Gracie says jumping up and down when she sees Rory walking towards them.
"Hi baby." Rory says. As soon as the teacher opens the gate Gracie launches herself at Rory. "How was she?" Rory asks picking Gracie up. Gracie gives Rory a kiss.
"I missed you mama." Gracie says.
"I missed you too baby."
"Daddy." She says leaning to give him a kiss.
"Hi baby."
"Grandma." Gracie says leaning for Lorelai to take her.
"She did good." Anna says.
"How long did she cry after we left?"
"About ten or fifteen minutes. Then she calmed down and she would cry for you on and off after that. She didn't want to play with the other kids. She was either holding my hand or Ms. Marie's hand." The teacher says. "She had an accident and she didn't want to eat the snack."
"Is that normal?"
"For some kids it is until they adjust."
"Okay. This is my mom Lorelai. She'll be picking her up sometimes."
"Nice to meet you."
"Likewise."
"Thank you." Rory says.
"I'll see you tomorrow." She tells Rory and Logan. "Bye Gracie see you tomorrow."
"I not coming tomorrow." Gracie says shaking her head.
"Why aren't you coming back?" The teacher asks.
"Acause I going to grandma's house."
"Oh boy." Logan mumbles.
"Told ya." Lorelai says laughing.
"Bye." Logan tells the teacher as they walk away.
"Did you have fun at school?" Logan asks Gracie.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Acause I wanted mommy."
"Are your teachers nice?" Rory asks.
"Yes they give me hugs when I was crying." Gracie says. "And they tell me mommy is coming soon." Hearing this makes Rory feel a little better about leaving Gracie.
"Good."
"Grandma are we going to see papa?" Gracie asks hoping this will keep her from going to school tomorrow.
"I don't know daddy are we?" Lorelai says not wanting to be the one to answer the question.
"I don't know. What do you think mommy?"
"I think you both are chickens." Rory says rolling her eyes. "You can't go to grandmas house today baby."
"But why mommy?" Gracie asks whining.
"Because you have school tomorrow."
"I don't want to go to school." Gracie says pouting.
"Grandma brought up some of papa's burgers for you." Rory says but Gracie doesn't reply as she looks out the window pouting.
At home Gracie eats her burgers and goes to play. Lorelai plays with Bentley while Rory does a few thing around the house. Logan is working in the home office.
"Daddy." Gracie says coming into the office.
"Yes baby?" He says looking up from the computer watching her walk up to him.
"Can I sit with you?"
"Of course you can." He says lifting her to sit on his lap.
She leans back resting against his chest.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm working."
"Oh." She says yawning.
Logan places a kiss on her forehead and continues typing. When he feels her body relax ten minutes later he looks down and sees she has fallen asleep.
"Hey I was wondering where she disappeared to." Rory says coming into the office.
"She was watching me work until she fell asleep."
"Do you want me to take her?"
"No I like getting to hold her when she's sleep. It reminds me of when she was a baby." He says running a finger lightly over her cheek. "She's growing up too fast."
"I know it feels like she went from a two week old to a three year old in the blink of an eye."
"Can we keep her like this forever?"
"I wish we could." Rory says smiling down at the pair. "How long has she been out?"
"About twenty minutes." He answers. "Where's the baby?"
"Mom stole him. Claims they need to do some bonding." She says. "I'll get him back when he's ready to eat, which should be any minute now." Rory says.
They both laugh when not even five minutes later they hear Lorelai coming upstairs with Bentley who is fussing.
"Mommy someone is hungry." Lorelai say handing the baby over.
Bentley calms once in Rory's arms knowing that he will be getting what he wants. Lorelai follows Rory out of the room and to the living room.
"I wish you guys lived closer." Lorelai tells Rory as she feeds Bentley.
"I would love to move closer but our jobs are here. It's not as easy for Logan to work from home everyday like it is for me."
"I know." Lorelai says. "I just wish I could see my grand babies everyday."
"Now if they decided to open a Hartford office I'd be looking for houses tomorrow."
"That would be a dream come true for me." Lorelai says. "I still can't believe that my baby has babies of her own."
"I wasn't sure if I even wanted kids but then Gracie happened and she's the best thing that could have ever happened to me. And now I have this beautiful boy which makes it even better."
"I can understand that. You came into my life much earlier then I planned but you're the best thing that could have ever happened to me." Lorelai says smiling at her baby as she feeds her own baby. "I'm so proud of you. You've accomplished everything I dreamed for when you were born. You graduate high school and college, have a career that you love, are happily married and have two beautiful children."
"Thanks mom. I couldn't have done any of it without you, you taught me to work hard for what I want and to appreciate everything I have no matter how small."
"You're gonna make me cry." Lorelai says trying to hold back the tears.
"What time are you leaving tomorrow?"
"In the early afternoon, I want to be able to say bye to Gracie."
"You know she's going to try to go with you right."
"Yes and that's why mommy and daddy will be there to tell her she can't."
"Such a chicken." Rory laughs. "Do you want to go out for dinner tonight? Logan can stay with the kids."
"I would love too. Where are we going?"
"How about Italian?"
"I could go for some good Italian cooking?"
"Bentley loves Italian. That was one of my craving when I was pregnant with him. Logan used to get annoyed when I would wake him up in the middle of the night to get me some." Rory laughs. "He once bought some and hid it in the refrigerator and tried to give it to me after he reheated it. He never did that again." Rory says laughing remembering her mood swing that night.
"I remember you telling me about that."
"All done chunky monkey." Rory says when Bentley stops eating. She fixes her shirt and burps him. "He almost rolled over to his back the other day when he was doing tummy time."
"Really?"
"Yeah Gracie was playing with him."
"She's so good with him."
"I can't wait until he's older and they can play together." Rory says sitting Bentley on her lap. "He gets so excited when he sees her."
"He loves his big sister." Lorelai says smiling. "Come here handsome." She says taking him from Rory.
Bentley happily sits with Lorelai babbling away.
"You've got another talker on your hands." Lorelai says.
"I know." Rory smiles. "This is how we're woken up every morning."
"Much better than crying."
"Exactly." Rory agrees as Bentley continues to babble.
"Hi sleeping beauty." Logan says when Gracie wakes forty-five minutes later. "Did you have a good nap?"
Gracie nods her head with a yawn. She nuzzles her face into his chest.
"Can I have milk daddy?" She asks softly.
"Yes you can." He says giving her a kiss. He saves the document he was working on and takes Gracie downstairs for her milk.
"Hi baby." Rory says when she sees Logan walk by with Gracie.
When he comes back he hands Gracie to her with her milk .
"She wants you." He tells Rory.
Rory gets Gracie situated on her lap and then she turns to Logan.
"Can you stay with the kids while I go have dinner with mom tonight?"
"Of course." He says.
"Daddy." Gracie says taking her cup from her mouth.
"Yes baby?"
"Can we go to the park?"
"Yes we can. Do you want to have a snack first?"
"No."
When Gracie finishes her milk and uses the bathroom and puts on her shoes. Since it has warmed up Rory and Lorelai went with them taking Bentley too.
Gracie goes down the slide holding Bentley on her lap while Logan stands closely by making sure he doesn't get hurt. While Gracie was swinging Logan sit's on a swing with Bentley and swings with him. Bentley loved it.
"Mommy look at my Bennie." Gracie calls to Rory who is sitting on a bench talking with Lorelai.
"I see he's swinging with daddy." Rory says looking over at them.
Logan swings with Bentley a little longer before giving him to Rory. He lifts Gracie to his lap and swing with her. Gracie holds on tightly as Logan swings them higher than Rory is comfortable.
"Be careful with my baby." Rory calls to Logan.
"Higher daddy higher." Gracie say gleefully.
"Daddy's going high enough." Rory tells Gracie. "She's such a daredevil." Rory tells Lorelai. "Her new thing is when we're going down the stairs and we get to the third stair from the bottom she likes to jump down. It drives me crazy I'm afraid she's going to break another bone."
"Sounds like something I would do when I was little. Mom hated it but the more she told me not to do it the more I did it." Lorelai says laughing.
"I'm hoping she grows out of her daredevil tendencies soon but with Logan's genes I doubt it." Rory says gasping when she sees Gracie jump into Logan's arms from on top of the dome shape monkey bars. "You see." Rory says.
"She's still little. She'll calm down as she gets older." Lorelai says.
"I hope so."
"Did you see me mommy?" Gracie asks proudly running over to her.
"I did." Rory smiles. "Do you want to go for a snack?"
"Cake pop." Gracie says jumping up and down and Bentley laughs at Gracie.
"We can go get cake pops." Rory tells Gracie and she's jumps more causing Bentley to laugh more.
Gracie takes Logan's hand and starts leaving the park.
"We have to wait for mommy and grandma to catchup baby."
At the nearby Starbucks Rory and Lorelai order coffee while Gracie gets a cake pop. Logan get a slice of pumpkin loaf and a coffee.
"Okay love bug come give mommy a kiss." Rory tells Gracie that evening when she's leaving to have dinner with Lorelai.
"Where you going mommy?" Gracie asks walking over to her.
"I'm going to go have dinner with grandma." She tells her while picking her up. "I'll come give you a kiss when I get back." Rory says and Gracie gives her a peck on the lips.
"I love you mommy."
"I love you too honey." She gives her a hug.
"Bye grandma." Gracie says leaning to her.
"Bye beautiful. I'll see you in the morning." Lorelai tells her. She takes Gracie from Rory and gives her a hug and kiss. "Have sweet dreams." Lorelai tells her.
"I love you."
"Love you too angle." Lorelai says putting Gracie down.
"I'm glad we could do this." Lorelai says after the waiter takes their order.
"Me too."
"Did I tell you what Kirk Jr. did last week?"
"No what?" Rory asks know anything involving one of the Kirk's is a recipe for a good story.
"He was hiding in a tree during a game of hide-and-go-seek. When he was trying to climb down he slipped and his pants got caught on a tree branch. He looked like a piƱata." Lorelai says laughing. "And when Kirk Sr. went to help him down he ended up in the same position next to Kirk Jr." Lorelai finishes laughing. Remembering the image of father and son hanging from the tree.
"Trust the kirks to be good entertainment. You don't need a tv with them around." Rory says laughing.
"You got that right."
Mother and daughter enjoyed a nice dinner together talking and sharing stories. After dessert they pay and leave.
"Sweet dreams baby." Rory says softly giving Gracie a kiss.
"Mommy." Gracie says groggily when Rory is leaving the room.
"Yes baby."
"Don't go."
"I'll stay until you fall back to sleep." Rory tells her sitting in the small bed as Gracie cuddles against her.
Rory runs her hand slowly through Gracie's hair as she slowly drifts off to sleep again. When she is sure Gracie is in a deep sleep Rory gently untangles herself form her. Giving her a kiss on the forehead she leaves the room mentally preparing herself for day two of Gracie going to school.
