A.N.- Hi everyone. I'm so sorry for not updating in a long while. I have been so busy with my life and I just hadn't had the time. Not only that, but I recently had two deaths in my family, my grandma from my dad's side of the family and my grandpa from my mom's side died within weeks of each other. It has been hard on my family and me. So I probably will not be updating again in a while. Thank you for reading my story and dealing with my long absences. I will try harder to get the next chapter up. Please be patient with me.
Now onto the 'Thank you's'. Thank you ShadowSpade and Black Dragon42 for leaving a review! Thank you reader, for taking the time to read my story!
Without further adieu, here's chapter 38!
Dean and Lydia were on the ground not moving and Hayley was still shakily aiming the gun at the other Dean and Lydia. Sam ran downstairs, after he had heard the first shot fired and only made it maybe down two steps when the second one fired. He watched as two bodies hit the floor. Sam noticed that Hayley still had the gun raised at Dean and Lydia and that they both had their hands raised. Sam walked over to Hayley and carefully and slowly took the gun from Hayley's hands. Once the gun was safely in Sam's hands, Dean and Lydia put their hands down and sighed in relief but made no move to get closer.
Just then Hayley began to grieve as she realized just what she had done. A heart wrenching, pain filled wailing.
"I killed my sister! I killed Dean! What have I done?! Lydia! Dean!" she screamed over and over. She just wouldn't stop. Lydia tried to think of a way to show her she was her real sister and that Dean was Dean. She rushed to Dean's side.
"Do you have any silver on you?! Any at all?! We need to get Hayley to see we are who we are and not the shifters!" She pleaded. Except Dean didn't have any silver on him. Dean shook his head no and Lydia sighed in frustration. She wiped her hands down her face and across her neck when she felt something. Lydia pulled out her necklace and by luck had it, the other shifter never saw. Hayley continued to moan and weep as Lydia realized that the necklace was pure silver. There was no way a shifter could have had it. She rushed to her wailing sister and tried to show her the necklace.
"Hayley! Look! Please look at me!" Hayley wouldn't glance in her direction for she was afraid of what she'll see. Lydia heartbroken by how painful and sorrow-filled her cries were, she had to try again to help stop the pain.
"Hayley please! Look at me! Look at this!" Finally, Hayley looked up at her with her pain filled eyes and Lydia smiled sadly as she said,
"Look. Remember this?" dangling her necklace, a silver chain with a small half heart that read 'lov' and 'sis' and 'for', in front of Hayley. She then continued, "Remember how we got it?" Hayley nodded and pulled out her own half of a heart that had the rest of the words, 'ing' and 'ters' and 'ever'. Lydia went on explaining,
"This is pure silver. If any shifter had tried to take it, they would have been burned… It's really me, Hal. It's really me…" as tears flowed down Lydia's own cheeks. Hayley, with tears of her own, practically jumped into her sister's arms and held her close. She sobbed heartbrokenly,
"I thought I killed you… I thought…" and she continued to cry with Lydia right with her. Sam looked at the sisters then at Dean before he asked Dean,
"Well, what about you, Dean? You aren't the shifter right?" Unshed tears on Sam's face threatened to fall. Then Dean said,
"Hand me your knife, Sam. The one we use for tests such as this one." and Sam does take out his knife and handed to Dean.
"If I was the shifter, cutting my arm like this would burn it, right?" then proceeded to cut his arm a little for Lydia, Hayley and Sam all to see. Hayley was relieved that she hadn't just killed her only family she had left and continued to cry but with happy tears instead of sad ones. Lydia, out of privacy for Hayley's vulnerable moment, took her away from the brothers to another room so she could cry in peace. Rebecca then came down the stairs to find Sam and Dean standing above two figures that looked exactly like Dean and Lydia. She said,
"I'm not going to even ask." both brothers smiled and laughed a little. Dean walked to the shapeshifter's body and noticed him wearing his necklace. Dean then yanked it from around the shapeshifter's neck and nodded knowingly at Sam and Rebecca before he went to find Lydia and Hayley.
Sam and Becky smiled a sort of sad smile before he too went to find Lydia. Once they found Lydia and Hayley, Dean and Sam said their goodbyes for the night and told her that they would be back in the morning before they took off to find a hotel for the rest of the night.
The next day, the four went back to Rebecca's house, Sam went inside and talked with Becky for a while before coming back out with her. Dean and Lydia were by the car, looking at a map and Hayley was leaning up against the car.
"So, this is what you do? You, Hayley, Lydia and your brother—you all hunt down these kinds of things?" Sam nodded as looked at his family. Lydia and Dean standing next to one another looking at a map, figuring the best route back to Bobby's and Hayley leaning up against the car.
"Yeah, pretty much." Rebecca just couldn't believe it. Not really anyway and she told Sam as much,
"I can't believe it. I mean, I saw it with my own eyes. And, I mean, does everybody at school… nobody knows that you do this?" Sam shook his head no before he glanced at his family again. Hayley now in the car, Lydia and Dean still looking at the map talking amongst themselves. Becky asked Sam a hard question,
"Did Jessica and Jack know?" Sam looked thoughtful looking at the others again before he answered her,
"No, they didn't." Becky nodded and stated as an observation that she noticed about all four of them,
"Must be lonely." Sam immediately told her,
"Oh, no. No, it's not so bad. Anyway, what can I do? It's my family." She laughed as she told him how she missed him and Hayley.
"Well, you know, Zack and me, and everybody at school… we really miss you." She hugged him. Sam told her sadly,
"Yeah, me too." They pull away. Sam slowly made his way over to the car where Dean and Lydia were just as Becky probed,
"Well, will you call sometime?" Sam thought for a second before he answered truthfully,
"It might not be for a little while." Rebecca nodded and waved goodbye to Dean and Lydia. They waved back, and she goes back inside the house. Sam walked the rest of the way over to the car.
"So, what about your friend, Zack?" Dean asked as Sam got closer. They all get in the car as Sam answered,
"Cops are blamin' this Dean Winchester guy and Lydia Irving woman for Emily's murder. They found the murder weapon in their lair, Zack's clothes stained with her blood. Now they're thinking maybe the surveillance tape was tampered with. Yeah, Becca says Zack will be released soon." He smiled as Dean and Lydia rolled their eyes before Dean put baby into drive and drove away.
Dean, Hayley, Lydia and Sam are driving down a highway. Lydia and Sam switched places so that Hayley could have some time with her sister just for this time. Lydia and Hayley were fast asleep, holding one another when Dean whispered to Sam,
"Sorry, man." Sam glanced at his brother before he probed Dean,
"About what?" Dean glanced at him before looking back at the road as he explained,
"I really wish things could be different, you know? I wish you and Hayley could just be….Joe and Joette College." Sam shook his head as he told him,
"No, that's okay. You know, the truth is, even at Stanford, deep down, I never really fit in. Hayley also felt the same way." Then Lydia's tired voice followed before Dean could speak,
"Well, that's 'cause you're a freak." Sam rolled his eyes as he sarcastically told Lydia,
"Yeah, thanks Lydia." Lydia more awake continued,
Well, I'm a freak, too. As well as Dean…" Dean nodded in agreement as Lydia went on, "and Hayley too. We're right there with ya, all the way." Sam laughed just Hayley woke up and asked,
"(Yawn) What's going on?" They all laughed at Hayley but not in a mean way then before Sam told Dean and Lydia,
"Yeah, I know we are." Dean then spoke up,
"You know, I gotta say—I'm sorry I'm gonna miss it." Lydia and Sam switch places again as Lydia asked,
"Miss what?" Dean answered her question,
"How many chances am I gonna have to see my own funeral? Or you your's?" They all smile at each other as they continue to drive all the way to Bobby's.
About half way to Bobby's, Dean got a call from the man himself and he explained that something funny was happening down in Iowa and that they needed to check it out.
"So you get all that Dean?" Bobby asked when Dean got quiet and Dean answered him seconds later,
"Yeah, I did. Thanks Bobby." then hung up on him. Dean told the others where they were heading for next. When they got there, they immediately took the time to figure out what was happening to the small Iowa college town. It didn't take them long to figure out that they were dealing with the Hookman and it was haunting the current minister and his daughter.
As Lydia and Dean tried to protect the Minister's daughter, Lori both of them got cut across the chest from the Hookman. It wasn't until that Sam and Hayley took Lori's necklace and burned it that the Hookman finally disappeared. Sam and Hayley ran back to their siblings to find them and Lori, walking out of the church. They asked them,
"You guys ok?" Dean and Lydia nodded but didn't say anything else as they made their way back to the car. After they had saved the day again, brother's Sam and Dean and sisters Lydia and Hayley left Iowa and began the long drive back to Bobby's.
Again about half way to Bobby's, Dean got a call from the man himself explaining that something was going on in Oasis Plains, Oklahoma and that bugs were the supposed killers. Dean told Bobby that they would handle it. A few hours later, Dean drove to Oklahoma and they didn't take long to figure out what was happening.
Turned out, the construction of buildings were being built on a ancient Indian burial ground and those spirits were angry. So the spirits had sent wave after wave of bugs. Dean, Sam, Lydia and Hayley and the family they managed to save from the bugs, made through the night until morning. Once the family was saved, Dean, Lydia, Sam and Hayley were walking out of the house when Dean and Lydia collapsed.
"Dean! Lydia!" both Sam and Hayley yelled when Dean and Lydia hit the ground in front the car. Hayley picked up her sister and noticed not only the cuts she had on her face but the burning fever. Sam also noticed the same things as Hayley had. Sam picked up his brother and placed him in the car before going for Lydia and getting her in the car as well. The family they had saved asked,
"Are they going to be ok?" Sam and Hayley lied to them saying yeah when they weren't sure. Sam and Hayley waved their goodbyes before they climbed into the car with Sam in the front seat and Hayley in the back. Hayley took care of Dean and Lydia while Sam drove to Bobby's. Sam called Bobby.
"Yea?" Sam told Bobby what was going on,
"Bobby. Something's wrong with Dean and Lydia! According to Hayley, they both have high fevers and a severe laceration with green ooze coming from the injury. We have no idea why! Do you think you can get Night there? We'll be there in a couple of hours." Bobby told Sam that he would and then hung up. Hayley looked at Sam from the rearview mirror in worry. Sam glanced from the road to look at her before he stepped on the gas.
Sam and the others arrived at Bobby's late at night. He went to the back seat and carried Lydia while Bobby helped Hayley with Dean since he was partly awake. Once they were all inside, Night immediately demanded,
"Get them up in their rooms! I'll take a look as soon as you get them there." before the group went up the stairs and placed Lydia and Dean in their respective rooms. Night went to Dean first seeing as he was partly awake and immediately figured out what was wrong. He demanded of Sam when he had entered Dean's room,
"Go get me some water and hot cloths and antibiotics if you have any." Sam nodded and left the room with bobby close behind to help Sam find the antibiotics. Night then left Dean and went into Lydia's room where Hayley sat next to her sister on the bed. Night checked her out too and realized that it was the same as Dean. He placed a hand on Hayley and told her,
"Your sister is going to be fine. She just needs to rest and take some antibiotics and she'll be right as rain." Hayley smiled sadly and nodded before she returned her attention back to her sister. Night then went back to Dean's room just as Sam and Bobby returned with hot water, clean cloth and antibiotics. Night then said,
"Bobby, Sam. I'm going to need you to hold Dean down gently. I'm going to have to take of that wound first." Then proceeded to remove the shirt Dean had on before getting the clean cloth wet. David Night then gently began to clean the wound. Dean immediately yelled in pain and Night yelled at Bobby and Sam,
"Hold him guys. I can't clean the wound when he is thrashing around so much!" Bobby and Sam held Dean down as Night cleaned then disinfected the wound before he wrapped up the injury. Bobby and Sam got off of Dean once Night was finished and was about to move into Lydia's room when Night said,
"Uh.. Sam. I don't think you should be going in there." Sam stopped and looked from Bobby to Night with a question on his face.
"Look I understand you wanting to help but I think you should stay clear this time." David continued and Sam began to argue,
"Night you are going to need me and Bobby! Hayley can't help! She can't hold her down! Lydia is pretty str-!" Night merely put up one hand interrupting Sam. Bobby then spoke up,
"Look Sam. If Night said you can't be in there then you can't be in there. Go watch your brother, ya Idjit." Sam tried once again to argue but he was shut down. So Sam finally listened and went to watch Dean. Once Sam entered Dean's room, Bobby and Night walked into Lydia's; they walked over to Hayley and Lydia. Night told her,
"Hayley I need you to remove her shirt and the straps of her bra before we can continue." For Lydia's privacy, Bobby and Night turned around as Hayley did what Night had asked. Night asked Bobby and Hayley to hold Lydia down in case she woke up while they were cleaning the wound. However, the minute Night saw Lydia's wound, Night noticed her wound was deeper than Dean's was. Lydia was going to need stitches. Night went to medicine bag and pulled out a needle and thread. Night instructed,
"Hold her down steady." before he went to work on cleaning and disinfecting the wound before he began to stitch her up. Luckily for all of them, Lydia remained unconscious throughout the whole ordeal. Night then started to wrap up the wound when he noticed four deep gashes on her back but he also noted that they were old. He then went back to wrapping up the wound until it was done. Once Night was done fixing Dean and Lydia, he began to pack up his things and before he left he told Bobby and the others,
"Make sure to clean them daily and make sure they get their antibiotics everyday. I'll be back to check on them in a week." then walked out the front door. Bobby, Sam and Hayley did just that, everyday they would make sure to clean the wound before they would wrap it back up and then they made sure Dean and Lydia took their antibiotics.
They did that for nearly a week straight. Dean and Lydia had just finished taking their antibiotics and were about to go lay down to rest when Sam came to tell them,
"I'm going into town with Bobby and Hayley. You two should get some more rest while we are away. We'll be back soon." then Sam left. Once they heard the front door shut, Dean walked into Lydia's room just when she had sat down on her bed.
"Lydia, we need to talk." Dean told her earnestly when he walked over to her bed. Lydia sighed because she knew exactly what he wanted to talk about. Dean sat down on the bed and sighed as well before he asked,
"Lydia, what happened on these last few hunts? I've noticed you have been distracted and I don't know why. Will you please tell me what is going on? I'm worried about you. Hayley's worried. Sam's worried. This isn't like you… Please tell me..." Lydia bowed her head in sadness before she looked into Dean's green eyes before she finally told him.
"Do you remember when we were young and my father had to go on a hunting trip with Bobby? And that your father had to watch us? We had to have been at least 12 maybe 13 at the time." Dean thought back to that time and nodded as he remembered. Lydia continued,
"Remember when your dad got so mad at me for doing practically nothing wrong on a hunt." Dean nodded again as she went on explaining,
"After he yelled at me for doing whatever wrong on a hunt, I ran to my room and began to pack my things. As soon as I was packed I waited until your dad had fell asleep before I took off." Dean nodded his head as he remembered that night very clearly but didn't say anything yet. Lydia continued,
"I didn't care where I ended up after I left; I just had to leave. I felt horrible for leaving you, Sam and Hayley but I just couldn't take it anymore. Anyway, I somehow ended up in Idaho, and stumbled onto a werewolf case. Anyway, because I was so young then, none of the cops believed me whenever I came into the station bearing a badge. They thought it was cute that I loved to play a police officer. So after that was a bust, I tried being a reporter when that didn't work; I tried everything else in the book.
But none of it worked. So I had to resort to stealing. After I stole the files about the case, I went to a run down bar to read about the victims. Even though, I was not old enough to be there; they allowed me to stay as long as I didn't drink any alcohol. I was determined to show your father that I can handle a case on my own. Anyway, I might have sat there for maybe twenty minutes when a young girl my age with red hair and blue eyes. She asked if the seat next to me was taken. I, of course, didn't want to talk to her because I had to figure out what I was up against and I couldn't because she was talking to me. She told me her name was Luna LaChance and me, being polite told her my name to hopefully get her to leave. However, that wasn't the case."
Instead, she tried to grab the folder about the grizzly murders killed by a werewolf. She then stated something that made red flags raise in my brain. She stated so casually that I was a hunter." Dean immediately had red flags rise in his brain about this girl but let Lydia finish her story before commenting on anything. Lydia told Dean everything about that girl and her parents and why they were hunting. She told him about how she ended up getting kidnapped by the werewolves as well and about how they had tied her up against a post along with Luna. Dean wasn't too happy about that but he remained quiet as she went on telling her tale,
"I watched them drag out Luna's parents. I watched as they ripped out her father's throat and was about to watch them do the same with her mother when I couldn't do it. I couldn't watch it anymore. I heard Luna scream and I…" Dean watched as tears fell from her face as she struggled to tell her ghastly tale.
"I couldn't do anything! I couldn't help them or Luna! I was such a failure! Then they cut the ropes holding us to the post. One of the werewolves told us to run and I did. Without a second thought, I ran. I ran like a coward and Luna was right behind me. I knew what was going to happen next. The werewolves were going to chase us before catching us and killing us. So I knew I had to out run Luna if I was going to make it…" Tears began flowing down Lydia's cheeks as told Dean what had been weighing heavily on her mind.
"I-I-I had to run faster than Luna… I had to let her die so I could live! Me! A hunter! Had let a young girl die so I could live! Who does that?! Who does that…? But I did. I ran as fast as I could… All the while hearing Luna yelling, 'Wait for me! Lydia, wait! Don't leave me like this!' I heard the werewolves gaining on us and I prayed that they wouldn't get me… I prayed! Then my prayers were both heard and broken. I heard one of the werewolves catch Luna before another hit me across my back, knocking me down."
She then showed Dean her back and he saw four jagged scars on her back before she covered them up again. Lydia continued,
"I thought for sure that I was a goner but I never felt anything after that. After a few moments went by of nothing happening, I got up and ran some more. I ran until I waved down a car which by luck was you and was saved. I never seen or heard from Luna again. Or at least I thought. Turned out that werewolf hunt that I was on when you called me to help you find Dad, that werewolf was Luna's mother." that shocked Dean. For he had no clue that werewolf case was anything but a normal case. Lydia continued,
"She wasn't killed like I had thought. She was transformed into one of them and she was blaming me for her family's death." then more tears flowed as she heart-brokenly said,
"I don't blame her! It was my fault! Like Bloody Mary said, I had killed them! I had known what I was up against! It was all my fault!" before she fell into Dean's lap and cried her eyes out. As Lydia cried, Dean felt nothing but an ache in his heart for Lydia and he tried to calm her down by saying sweet nothings to her until she fell asleep. He leaned back until his back was up against the headboard and laid there with her, rubbing her back until he too fell asleep.
Sam, Hayley and Bobby came home about an hour after Dean and Lydia had fell asleep and Hayley went to check on them. When she entered Dean's room, she found it empty which she found a odd before going to her sister's room. She opened the door to find Dean leaning against the headboard fast asleep and Lydia laying on Dean's chest also fast asleep. Hayley was shocked but also happy. So she quietly closed the door and went back downstairs. Hayley told Sam and Bobby that they were resting and that they should let them rest. She decided not to tell Sam and Bobby about how Dean and Lydia were sleeping on the same bed because she felt they needed to see it to believe it and she wasn't going to have it any other way.
A.N.- Hi again. I hope you all are liking the story and I'm sorry for practically dumping my life on you all but I was feeling down and needed to get it off my chest. Thank you all so much for reading my story. It makes me smile knowing someone out there likes what I write and I'm sorry for making you feel down after reading this A.N.
