Lesson #(I forgot)

"Should do something" "なければいけません" (na kereba ikemasen)

How to say you should do/need to do something. In Japanese, you take the basic root sentence and just modify the verb and add "なければいけません" (na kereba ikemasen)

Example 1 (ru-verbs): drop the "ru" and add the additional statement

"I eat" - "わたしはたべる" (watashi wa taberu)
"I should/need to eat" - "わたしはたべなければいけません" (watashi wa tabe-na kereba ikemasen)

Example 2 (u-verbs): drop the "u" and add "e" followed by the additional statement

"I go to the store" - "わたしはみせに行く" (watashi wa mise ni iku)
"I need to/should go to the store" - "わたしはみせに行けなければいけません" (watashi wa mise ni ike-na kereba ikemasen)

Example 3 (the verb suru): convert to "shi" and add the additional statement

"I do laundry" - "わたしはせんたくする" (watashi wa sentaku suru)
"I should/need to do laundry" - "わたしはせんたくしなければいけません" (watashi wa sentaku shi-na kereba ikemasen)

ENJOY CHAPTER 35:
One Requirement

"...Rin," he breathed in response to her, his trailing lips had stopped just above her left breast; above her pounding heart. He didn't answer her question, in fact he contemplated one of his own.

He meandered up previously conquered spots before raising to his knees, positioning himself to look down over her. He studied her with intense golden orbs as she merely stared at him, awaiting him to finish.

"This love that you refer to. Tell me, what exactly does that word mean for humans?"

Rin's eyes lightened at the sudden intimacy of his words. Despite the uneasiness she felt from receiving no answer to her own inquiry, she whole-heartedly welcomed this pursuit. But this particular question was a question she, too, had asked herself many times.

"Forgive me, Sesshoumaru…," she finally stammered, blushing as she looked away from him, "I don't know the answer to that myself."

His eyes narrowed, "So then why say it when even you don't understand it?"

There was a hint of annoyance, of condescending disappointment that accompanied the nuances of his inquisition. She swept her wide eyes back to him, taking notice of the frustration.

Quickly trying to salvage the moment, she threw in, "I-I know it's there… I know that's how I feel… I've just never tried explaining before…," she paused to evaluate his reception of her words, "…If you would like, I will try to explain."

Sesshoumaru retreated to lean on his left arm. Staring expectantly at her served as his only response.

She gathered her thoughts for a moment, trying to think of where to start before finally speaking.

"I think… There are many types of love. There is love that I hold for things like music and games, for material and sentimental things, love for my friends, and even love for myself. They are all slightly different."

She looked to the side once more, thinking, while Sesshoumaru stared at her with intrigue.

"But… the love I have for you… It means so much more than anything else. It means more than the other things…," she bit her lip as she realized just how honest she was being not only with her lord, but with herself, "…It means more than my life. I would give up everything for you. Only you. And..."

Sesshoumaru seemed unfazed by her willful vulnerability.

She relentlessly continued even as his caressing hand retreated from her.

"...With you, I want to do all I can to be everything you expect me to be… to be everything you want me to be. What love means to humans... to me at least…" she looked away in embarrassment, "… it means to care for someone so much that your soul would feel shattered without them."

Feeling like she had just been crushed under her own weakness, she refused to look up at the all powerful demon that held her heart in his hands. It was obvious that everything she had just said had made her sound terribly weak. Terribly human.

With the fingers of his right hand and by the force impressed upon her cheek bone, Sesshoumaru made her look at him once more. He analyzed her and her emotion before smirking.

"Do you want to know what this type of love means for a demon?"

Her expression dropped at his offer. There was a different meaning? She wanted to know but… Where was all of this coming from?

She hesitantly nodded.

"When a demon loves another being in this way, its heart becomes tied to that being," Sesshoumaru began, "Unlike with humans, that kind of love isn't just a feeling. Once established, it becomes a fact," he breathed icily, "It doesn't change by sheer will or under the influence of time. And if severed, it becomes an endless weight."

Rin's form grew tense beneath his as empathetic golden eyes turned to anger.

"Humans change their minds. Frivolously selfish with their emotions because their lives are too short for them to understand loyalty, cause, or transcendental ideology. Human love knows no responsibility. It is the emotional manifestation of a mortal's pure weakness and greed," the toxic words left his mouth with bitterness.

Rin's eyes began to fill with tears as she realized he hadn't believed her. Was this a degradation of humanity? Or, really... just a degradation of her? Sesshoumaru had brutally murdered her explanation to him with his hundreds of years of observation, insight, and wisdom. Though she knew him to be wrong, what evidence did she have to argue?

But, unexpectedly... His eyes willingly grew compassionate once more.

Vulnerable even.

He closed the gap between his face and hers in comfort, as Rin still visibly shook from his previous statements. A complete change in character, he now whispered into her ear with tenderness and precise word choice.

"Rin... Despite these truths, and despite my personal hatred of humans and their pathetic short-comings…," he paused to indicate the importance of what he was about to say,

"Despite it all, my heart, somehow… has still managed to become tied to you."

Rin's eyes shot open to the sky above as she heard his words soundly and clearly. His exhaled breaths left imprints upon her ear.

Sesshoumaru watched as the water glistened upon her velvet black hair, continuing,

"It's like I can feel you even when you are out of my reach. I can see you even when all else succumbs to darkness. I can hear you… your cries for me, your desires for me, your love for me... in absolute silence. No matter how far I may be from you."

Rin's eyes welled for a different reason, now. Her body now shook out of disbelief rather than hurt.

He was considering leaving her, belittling her even, and now... He was...?

Sesshoumaru lifted himself to now sit with legs crossed next to her. He looked her in the eyes and she returned it with none other than dazed shock.

He was…

"This is my admission of my regard for you, Rin..." he coddled her disbelieving features, allowing his words to sink in, "You are the only one that I have ever experienced this with."

Confessing.

"And I shall allow you to stay with me. But I have one requirement of you..." He wiped away her newly formed tears with his long, meticulous fingers as his voice grew stern once more.

"...Do not prove me right about your human nature. Once you make the decision to stay by my side for the rest of your life, you will be expected to do so without excuse. Understanding now the influence that you have over me, I will not allow you to toy with it," his voice resonated with as much frustration and authority as it did with primed vulnerability.

She understood now.

He had been afraid... of her.

Afraid of giving a human girl, a member of a race known for its disloyal tendencies, power over him...

...Power granted by the simple fact that he loved her.

She sat up, trembling, never breaking his gaze. His eyes were bright pools of unuttered thoughts that he willed to keep locked away. His face was stealthy and lifeless, though he scoured Rin's every expression, her every move, for hints of insincerity. She made her way into his lap, straddling his waist, and threw her arms completely around his neck. He merely stared past her as she freely and openly showed her affection for him.

"You are who I am. Without you, I would have no reason to live," her voice was quiet, yet full of passion, "I can make the decision to stand by you right now, forever, and have no regrets." She breathed.

They sat in complete silence for several moments before Sesshoumaru finally acknowledged her answer with his own compelling voice,

"...I will hold you to your word."
