The door to the café opened, and the bells jingled signaling that a new customer had arrived. Enjolras looked up from his book and notes. Eponine smiled brightly down at him from the side of his leather armchair that was placed in the corner of the café.
"Enjoying your time down there, huh?" Eponine joked. She nudged him with her elbow. "Scoot." He grumbled, the shifted to make room for her. Enjolras placed his books on the little coffee table in front of them, and wrapped his arm around her. She smiled.
"I don't get why you have to be away so much," Eponine pouted. "It's like you live in a whole other dimension and I have to take this portal to find you, which takes forever to regenerate!" Enjolras chuckled.
"I think you're over doing it. It's only been a week."
Eponine raised her eyebrows at him. "Oh yeah? It's not like you've been having a great time without me. Who was the one who was so desperate to get ahold of me?" He raised his hands in defeat.
"Okay, I admit it. I missed you. But we need to find a way to cope with being apart."
"Don't tell me you're going to whip out a pad of paper and start jotting notes on a chart about ways to cope with being apart from your boyfriend slash girlfriend."
"How did you know I was going to do that?"
"I'm just so psychic that you can't even tell my next move."
"Sure."
Eponine looked at her watch. "I've got to go, Gavroche is waiting for me at the park with his new girlfriend and I have to pick them up. You can't come, sorry, we're heading straight home after we drop her off. I'll see you tomorrow at the football game. Best of luck to you and your team!" Enjolras frowned at the decision, but reluctantly let her go. Eponine kissed him on the cheek, and left without another word.
The lights were shining brightly down on the football stadium, and so many people were wearing the red and black colors that represented the high school.
"Come on, 'Ponine! We're going to miss the game, then our fifteen dollars won't be worth it! Come. On!" Cosette yipped, excited to see everything in action. She was pulling on Eponine's arm. Eponine was taking her time strolling through the crowds, looking for familiar faces. Cosette finally managed to drag her through the people into a seat near the front.
"It's amazing how many people are here!" Eponine awed. Cosette scoffed.
"What, you haven't realized how many people are at school? Sheesh!"
"I've never paid attention. Jeez." Eponine said. There was a moment of silence between them. Cosette glanced at her occasionally, but Eponine was too busy staring at other people passing by. Suddenly, Eponine started waving madly at some group over at the other side of the bleachers. Cosette followed her excited gaze to see Ida and Brielle coming over towards them with their arms stocked up with candy bars and other goods.
"Hey girls! We made a stop over by the candy shop before we came here in case we got bored. It's always fun to have candy around you once in a while. Hi Eponine! Oh, I love your shirt!" Ida mused. Eponine smirked, and played with her sleeve. Ida winked at her, and Cosette smiled. They were getting along pretty well.
"Hey, where's Maddie? She was with us a minute ago." Brielle frowned, looking around her for any trace of a whitish blonde head. Ida scoffed.
"It doesn't matter, Bri. She'll find her way back eventually without us." Ida turned away from Brielle and faced the green football field. There were students and athletes on there, wishing the team good luck. Suddenly, she caught notice of Maddie trailing helplessly behind an annoyed looking Courfeyrac. Ida laughed. Infatuated girls! It was hilarious to watch the dumb girl follow him around and around the stadium.
Finally, everyone returned to their seats to watch the game begin. The band started playing, and their school team ran out onto the field. Eponine could see Enjolras and Marius beaming at the crowd applauding them. She smiled, and clapped her hands, whooping wildly. Cosette was in her seat, jumping up and down, screaming, "Go Marius! I love you! Mwah! Mwah!" Ida was struggling to pull her down, but Cosette refused to give in. Eponine waved, but she knew that no matter what movement or action she did, they wouldn't see her. They were too focused on what was coming next.
The school mascot was coming from behind the team. The mascot was an eagle, fierce and strong just like their school was. They were wearing jerseys of black and red.
The opposing team came running out next, and their jerseys were colored white and blue. Eponine recognized that color. Right. The National Guard was the name of the football team, and they were Lamarque High School's worst enemy. They went to King High, the place where all of the rich kids went. Everybody there looked down on people at Lamarque High. When it came to sports though, King High wasn't the strongest.
The National Guard started waving at the crowd, and it wasn't surprising at all to Eponine that the clapping had died down quite a bit, and turned into a polite applause, except for the few fifty students that had come with the football team to watch the game.
Everybody took their starting positions, Enjolras as the quarterback behind the line, and on the other side, the quarterback named Ford Johnson took his place as well. The whistle sounded, and everybody was off. Enjolras took the ball from Bossuet and threw it at Joly, who sprinted towards the line. Courfeyrac was tackling some other guy, and Bahorel was following close behind Joly to make sure no one tackled him. They did anyway. One of the players from the National Guard got ahold of Joly's arm, and Joly lost his grip on the ball. The whistle was blown again, and everyone returned.
The next play was that Enjolras threw the ball back to Combeferre, who moved a little before getting a good shot and throwing it to Grantaire. Grantaire seemed to sway a bit before regaining his balance and realizing where he was. Eponine face palmed herself. He must have been drinking before the game. For a drunk, Grantaire ran pretty fast. He sprinted all the way up to the edge of the field, with a few opponents closely behind. Eponine cheered. He had made the first goal!
The game continued to zoom by, Eponine yawning every so often. She kept a close eye on Enjolras, watching her boyfriend be so "heroic" for his school. At least the Revolutionaries were winning by far.
Suddenly, it was like she had amazing senses. Not that she did, but she felt it. Like something was about to happen. She didn't know if it was good or bad, but Eponine knew it was going to happen. Like slow motion, everything played before her eyes. She lost herself to a world where she didn't know where she was, but she knew her purpose. A bulky opposing player from the National Guard came hurtling towards Enjolras. He didn't notice, because he was watching his team intently. Eponine could feel herself getting up out of her seat, seeing Cosette's wide eyes, and arms grabbing at her to sit down. Eponine could practically see herself running down the steps of the bleachers, making people turn their heads towards her in surprise. Eponine dashed out onto the field, and stood in front of Enjolras to block the player from crashing down on him, maybe hurting him badly. As the player neared closer and closer, Enjolras turned his head to see what was happening, but it was too late. Everything returned to normal speed, and Eponine could feel herself on the ground, arms splayed out on the grass.
That didn't hurt as bad as I thought, Eponine thought. Then the pain showed itself. Her head suddenly split into a terrible headache, and her leg felt sore and bruised. Her ankle felt so numb, and hurt so much. The world suddenly had black dots, and Eponine's vision started to go fuzzy. The last thing she saw and heard before she blacked out was Enjolras and Cosette looking down at her, screaming her name.
Then her world went black as night.
