Previously...

(Jasper's POV)

"They don't know anything, Jasper," Alice spoke up from near the fireplace.

"She's right," Peter agreed. "I only knew that we had to be here tonight."

I narrowed my eyes on Edward and Alice, who were doing their best to avoid my stare. "But you two do." I could feel it in their emotions, as I reminded them that they couldn't lie to me. Neither of them responded, though, only serving to fuel my agitation, and I sighed, running a hand through my hair, and immediately switched my focus onto the conversation happening in the room above us, knowing that it was the only way that I would get some straight answers while being able to better monitor directly what was happening with my mate.

(Natalie's POV)

Carlisle had his hands pressed together thoughtfully, as if he were trying to find the right words to say before he finally spoke. "I'll try to put this in the simplest terms I can so that you can understand, okay?" I nodded, and he continued, "After you left the hospital earlier, I began to look over your brain scans." He paused. "Natalie, you have a tumor, and it's terminal."

I barely had time to digest the mind-numbing words that he had just spoken before I learned the main reason why he'd wanted to talk to me up here alone and away from everyone else - namely Jasper. A loud BANG echoed throughout the house, followed by an agonizing earth-shattering roar that shook the very foundation of the house.

Chapter 36: Dangerous Dilemma

(Natalie's POV)

I jumped in my seat and Carlisle and I whipped our heads towards the door. Fear consumed me, but not for myself, but for Jasper.

"Stay here," Carlisle instructed, flitting out of the room at vampire speed before I had the chance to argue. The speed at which he moved made it seem as though he had vanished into thin air, had it not been for the door that now remained open.

I stood and walked towards it, leaning against its frame as I strained my ears to make out what was going on down there. My worry for Jasper had consumed me to the point where the news Carlisle had broken to me only moments before didn't seem to have reached me yet.

This was stupid. Why was I still up here? Jasper wouldn't hurt me - ever. I knew this to be true like I knew that the sun would rise each morning and set in the evening.

Taking in a deep breath, I cautiously left Carlisle's office and made my way down the corridor towards the stairs, my feet following the noise that grew louder with each step.

"Carlisle, do something!" I heard Esme cry as I rounded the corner, gaining my first glimpse into the room, which was a completely different picture than it was before the good doctor and I had retreated upstairs only a handful of minutes prior. The sofa was now turned on it's side, the glass center of the coffee table was shattered with the wood around it broken in half as though one of them had fell into it, and one of the floor to ceiling windows was decorated with spider cracks as an end table lie upside down in front of it.

"Jasper, son? Can you hear me? We really need you to calm down," the patriarch tried to get through to his adopted son and appease his mate's desperate plea. He slowly moved forward, only to quickly retreat when Jasper let out a snarl, lunging forward in an attempt to take a bite out of him.

"It doesn't work that way. You can't reach him when he's like this - no one can!" My eyebrows shot up as I saw Peter straining with every ounce of strength he possessed to keep a hold of and restrain a still struggling Jasper, Emmett doing his best to assist him on the other side, gripping his arm. Both of them looked like they had just been through a war zone, as did Edward, who was crouched down in an attempt to protect the women on the other side of the room, Charlotte included, should Jasper break free.

Taking him in, I saw that Jasper's wasn't fairing much better than the others. His honey colored curls were a wild disarray piled on his head, his jeans were sliced in several places, adding to his completely disheveled appearance, and his shirt was torn on the left side of his chest as well as his right sleeve, ripped from the shoulder. But none of that was what shocked me the most; it was his eyes. They were completely black - not even the whites remained.

The sound of my gasp as I covered my mouth with my hand caught the attention of everyone in the room as Jasper's focus zeroed in on me, momentarily ceasing his struggles.

Carlisle frowned, his eyes betraying his worry. "Natalie, you shouldn't be down here. It's not safe and -"

Jasper roared at the doctor as he took a step towards me, renewing in his attempts to free himself with additional vigor. His demonic-like eyes never left me, and, despite how terrifying he appeared, I couldn't seem to muster up even an ounce of fear towards him. I knew in my heart that, beneath this ravenous exterior, my Jasper was still in there and that he would never harm me.

This had to be the demon he once spoke of; the one who so many other vampires feared and who had single handedly destroyed armies of thirsty newborns and human villages alike. We were now in the presence of the God of War.

Despite the unknown, confidence filled my being and I began to move forward towards my mate. He stopped in his escape attempts when he saw this, his chest heaving for unneeded air.

"Natalie, stop!" Edward shouted, causing me to freeze mid-stride and snap my head in his direction, startled at his tone. "This isn't Jasper, right now! He'll kill you as soon as you're within arm's length."

Having lost my attention, Jasper snarled and, once again, attempted to escape.

"He's right," Peter agreed. "I've seen him like this only a handful of times, and each time was worse than the last. He doesn't recognize who any of us are, right now."

"Were all dead the second he escapes," Charlotte added softly from the corner with the other women.

"And at this rate, it won't be much longer!" Emmett gritted out from between clenched teeth. "He's strong as shit!"

My mind began racing as I tried to think of a way out of this, a way to protect not only the family, but Jasper, as well.

"Alice?" Carlisle questioned, an air of urgency in his tone.

She shook her head, "I can't see him when he's like this."

"I can't understand much either, but I do know that he doesn't like any of us speaking to or even looking at Natalie," Edward added.

An idea popped into my head as I took notice of the fact that as long as I kept eye contact with him, Jasper would stop struggling for freedom and keep his attention on me.

I took another couple steps forward until I was no less than ten feet from Jasper. "I need everyone aside from Peter, Emmett and Edward to get out.l of here." I spoke in a clear, even tone, maintaining the unbroken connection with him.

I could feel all of the startled pairs of gold and crimson eyes burning into my back from all sides.

"What -?"

"I have a plan, but I'm not sure it will work, and don't want to risk any of you getting hurt."

"Natalie," Carlisle began, ignoring Jasper's growl as he continued on, "I'm sure we can come up with a different plan."

"No," I objected strongly, and in a way that left little to no room for argument. "We don't have time to argue this and there is no other way. Just, please, trust me."

The room was silent, aside from the continuous rumbling coming from Jasper's growls.

Finally, Carlisle sighed. "Do as she says."

Only Rose began to object, "But -"

"Rosalie," I cut her off. "Please?" She didn't respond, but I knew she accepted my plea.

"Move slowly," Peter instructed, "Bear your necks, show as much submission as you can without turning your back to him, and, for the love of God, do NOT look at him or Natalie."

Little by little, the room emptied until Carlisle was the last one to leave. From out of the corner of my eye, I noticed him pause at the entryway.

"Good luck," He spoke his words so softly I barely could make them out. " And, please, be careful - all of you." The front door closed behind him.

Jasper had calmed some without all of the other vampires around to stress him out, making him slightly easier for the boys to restrain.

Edward remained in the corner of the room, knowing better than to try to approach me.

"What now?" He asked softly as to not startle Jasper up again.

I felt my shield pressing against my head, begging to be let free to help the vampire I loved.

"Now, you let him go."

"WHAT?" All three of the shouted without thought, which was a big mistake on their part as Jasper took advantage of their distraction and wrenched his arm away from Emmett and sent him crashing through the glass dining room table in the connected room.

Edward flew in front of me, crouching low as Jasper turned his sights on him, having elbowed Peter away from him. He then lost his balance and fell over a broken piece of the coffee table.

Now was my chance, I thought to myself as I sent my shield flying, encasing Jasper within the blue shimmering walls just in time for him to crash into it.

With everyone, Jasper included, safe, I was able to focus on the other vampires in the room.

"Shit, that was a close one," Emmett mumbled as he made his way back into the living room, picking shards of glass from his curly, brown hair.

"This was your plan?" Peter asked rising to his feet.

I nodded, "Encasing him in my shield was. Him escaping the way he did, however, wasn't. I just needed you two away from him so I could get him inside of it alone."

Edward sighed in relief and turned to face me, only to jump in surprise when Jasper began ramming against the blue shimmering walls holding him captive. He continued this over and over, causing a sparkling ripple effect every time he made contact.

"He's going to hurt himself if he keeps that up," Edward murmured, looking troubled.

"I think he's trying to get to Natalie," Emmett observed, dusting himself off.

"It doesn't help that we're all out here with her, either," Peter added.

"Then you guys should all leave, too," I decided.

"He'll no!" Emmett immediately objected. "What if he gets free?"

I quirked a brow, "From that? Unlikely."

Edward sighed, "You're human, Natalie. Keeping this up will drain you."

"Yeah, you remember what happened before! You passed out!"

I shook my head, "But he won't hurt me."

"You don't know that, Lil Bit," Peter insisted calmly.

"But I do! Jasper could never hurt me!" I denied their claim with fever and walked right up to the shimmering ball, turning to face them. "I can prove it!"

Before anyone had the chance to object further, I took in a deep breath and stepped backwards inside the shield that encased a feral vampire.

A/N: Now, I know this was a short one that I left on a cliffhanger, but I wanted to give you guys a little something for being so patient with me. I should be updating quicker from now on since I'm between semesters of college. Any ideas on what will happen next?

As always, if you have any questions post them in my comments and I will answer them and my next author's note at the bottom of the chapter.

QueenAella: please please update! what happens to Natalie? Does Jasper change her? Does she make the decision to stay human? What about what is supposed to happen with James, Victoria and Laurent? Is she a vampire by then? What about Charlie? Will she tell him that she's got a terminal tumor? Or will they keep him in the loop like what happened with Bella in Breaking Dawn? I NEED TO KNOW!

Bella'Xo: I don't want to spoil anything for you and my other readers, but I will reveal what I can...Natalie will become a vampire at some point, which will be worked out soon now that it's been revealed that she's dying. All the Cullens, plus Peter & Char, all know she's sick. I haven't decided on when she will be changed or how yet. I am open to suggestions tho!

blue-lily295: Damn I love this story! :D Poor Jasper and Nat...I'm guessing she's going to be turned? Will it be before New Moon? If so is she going to leave with them? I can't really see her leaving Bella. So many questions :) update soon please :D

Bella'Xo: I will reveal what I can...Natalie will become a vampire at some point, which will be worked out soon now that it's been revealed that she's dying. I haven't decided on when she will be changed or how yet, but am tossing around some ideas. I am open to suggestions tho!

Martine9295: the line "I don't speak Car and Driver," really cracked me up haha :P as well as Jasper's "I don't think that was meant as an open invitation, Edward." I loved how Jasper explained the mate thing to Bella.

so I never would have thought that Natalie had a brain tumor, just didn't think it through that much xD silly me xD At first I was confused as to why Peter and Charlotte were there. But I really hope that we get to see the aftermath of the scene, that Natalie just breaks down in tears and Jasper comes up to comfort her, realizing that she's extremely emotional and upset right now. So will this mean that she will be turned soon? Will she then have her power of a shield, times a 100 because it's magnified through the change?

and if Alice was sad but optimistic, would that mean that she has seen Natalie as a vampire already in the future? it's cute if Edward upset and almost angry for Natalie's sake, it shows how much he cares about her too (not only because she's Bella sister)

I love how Jasper sometimes swears when the tension becomes too much, it feels right in this story.

I hope everything went okay in school and I'm happy to hear you're on winter vacation now :)

Bella'Xo: So glad 2 hear you like my story! Now that Natalie and the Cullens know she's terminal, they will be talking about their options and her change. Like I've been saying ^^^ Idk, how or when she will be changed but def b4 Bella. I'm open to ideas & have been tossing some of my own around.
