Chapter Thirty-Six: Getting Better
Matt sat on the bed with Gabby, he pushed a few pieces of her hair back, "I should go get Antonio," he said as he looked into her brown eyes.
"Can you stay here just a few more minutes?" Gabby asked in a low voice. "I just need to make sure you are real."
Matt gave her a small smile, "If you don't want me to leave, then I'm not going anywhere." He kissed her softly on her forehead and wrapped his arms around her and rested his other hand on the roundness of her belly. He then rested his chin on her head, "When I got home and you were gone, I felt like my world ended. You and our son mean everything and I promise that I will never let anything happen to again."
"You know that none of this is your fault" Gabby said as she ran her hand up Matt's arm. "This was Jay's fault and no one else is to blame." She then sat up slowly and looked at Matt, "I want you to know that I love you so much and I am so grateful you came for me, but part of me is angry at you for putting yourself in danger like that."
Confusion played into Matt's features, "You're upset with me?"
"I'm upset that you carelessly placed yourself in danger and came into that house."
Matt sat up, "It was you Gabby and I gladly do it again, if it meant saving you and our son."
"Matt if you would have gotten yourself killed…" Gabby began to say with tears rolling down her face.
"But I didn't," he quickly cut her off. "And to be honest Gabby if I had to give up my life so that you could live, I would do it in a heartbeat."
"Don't you get it?" she asked as she placed her hand on the side of his face. "There is no me with you."
Matt pulled her in and kissed her lips, "Same here," he said letting their lips still touch.
"Am I interrupting?" a voice asked from the doorway, causing Gabby and Matt to look over to Antonio. Gabby smiled at him as he walked over to the side of her bed and quickly kissed her on the cheek.
"Actually, I was just coming to get you," Matt said standing up from the bed.
"It's cool, I just wanted to come in and check on my sister and see what the doctor said."
"He said that everything looks good, but they are going to hold be over night for monitoring. If everything checks out in the morning I should be released," Gabby said as she placed a hand over her stomach.
"And straight home," Matt added nodding his head to where she just placed her hand. He then looked back over at Antonio, "the doctors have placed Gabby on the bed rest for the rest of her pregnancy."
"Oh man, I feel sorry for you," Antonio chuckled causing Gabby to give him a look.
"What are you saying?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Just that trying to keep you down for the next three and half months is going to be a full time job for Matt."
"I'm not that bad," Gabby stated as she crossed her arms over her chest, causing both Matt and Antonio to hold back a laugh.
"Seriously," Antonio said with the trace of his smile gone. "I'm glad that you and my nephew are okay. I don't know what I would have done if I lost my best friend." He gave a Gabby a hug and a quick kiss.
"I'm gonna head back to Chicago tonight, Laura and the kids are really worried about you, so I'll tell them you're okay and Severide is going to ride back with me, but before I leave I need to speak with Matt."
"Sure," Matt says as he follows Antonio out of the room.
"So I just talked to the Forrest Lake Police and they are going to extradite Jay to Chicago. He will be placed in jail at district and be brought up on charges of kidnapping, breaking and entering, and a few other things. I didn't want to say anything in front of Gabby, I know that she doesn't need anymore stress."
"Thanks, man I appreciate it," Matt said as he quickly hugged Antonio.
"That's what family does."
"Well as long as everything goes well tonight, Gabby and I should be home tomorrow afternoon. I don't know if you, Laura, and the kids want to stop by, but you guys are more then welcome."
"Thanks, I'm sure Laura and my mom will be by tomorrow to stay with her as long as you guys want them to stay. Don't be afraid to kick them out," Antonio smiled at his last comment.
"I will keep that in mind."
Matt and Antonio said their goodbyes, Matt then walked back into the room with Gabby. Her eyes were closed as he approached the bed; he stood there and stared at her. He couldn't believe that the last forty-eight hours actually happened. What they experienced are events that you watched in movies, they aren't suppose to happen in real life, but it happened, there was nothing he could do to change it. He reached out and touched Gabby's hand.
"You okay?" Gabby asked with her eyes on him.
"Just thinking," Matt said.
She closed her hand around his, "Why don't you think in the bed with me."
Matt slid off of his shoes as Gabby moved giving Matt some room. He laid his body next to her's and drew the covers around them both. They lay in the bed facing one another. A comfortable silence filled the room; they didn't need to speak to understand each other. For the first time in the last two weeks, Matt was able to sleep.
