This is not the last chapter. I think I will do one more and then an Epilogue.
So, let the battle commence!
Jewels of Azcaroth
The sky was lit up by the hundreds of spells that were flying at the invisible enchantments. There was a sudden pause, and the Dark Mark appeared in the sky, speaking once again in the voices of Dorabella and Trixor.
'YOU HAVE ONE LAST CHANCE. WE ARE THE LESTRANGE TWINS. WE WILL MAKE THE WIZARDING WORLD A BETTER PLACE. SURRENDER, AND YOU WILL BE MET WITH MERCY. FIGHT, AND THE LESTRANGE ARMY WILL WIPE YOU OUT.'
'WE'LL STOP FIGHTING WHEN ALL YOU SCUMBAGS ARE DEAD!' shouted Albus, to a lot of cheering from those who heard. There were two more flashes of light, these ones brighter and more powerful than the others. They hit the enchantments and instead of exploding, they spread across it like liquid, and then it disintegrated. It was drizzling slightly, and they were hit by droplets of water.
'Shit,' muttered James. Everyone ducked as a spell flew over their heads. It hit the North Tower, and blew the top of the roof off. They could hear yells from the people inside as they were showered with bricks and dust. Then there was a black, smoky streak across the sky. It flew towards the Astronomy tower, and then there was a Death Eater there, holding onto the sides, grinning evilly. Three more Death Eaters flew onto the tower. The Auror tried to Stupify one of them, but he was just grabbed and thrown off the tower head first. Lily let out a small cry at the dull thud of a body hitting a roof below, but James looked over and saw that the roof wasn't far below, but the Auror had been upside down and had broken his neck.
'Come on, this way,' James kicked a Death Eater hard in the chest, knocking him away from the tower. 'Trust me!' He jumped off the tower and landed on the flat roof, rolling when he hit the ground. 'Come on, it's safe!' There was a pause, then the others followed him. They looked around for an exit.
'Great, now we're stuck!' said Albus, but James was already running towards the edge. He slid down onto another roof, this one slanted with a flat part only one foot wide on the top. The drizzle had made it horribly slippy. He forced himself to look forward as they walked along it. A smoky black streak curved across in front of him, but he tried to ignore it. At the end the was a sheer one hundred foot drop to the ground below, but just over a couple of metres ahead was the Ravenclaw tower. A balcony was jutting out. It was child's play, really. If he was on the ground he wouldn't even think about it.
'You're crazy,' said Robby as James stepped back and took a run up. His heart stopped as he flew across the gap. As he reached the balcony his foot caught the fence and he tumbled onto the floor, nearly dislocating his shoulder and grazing his hands. But he stood up and turned to face the others.
'It's easy!' he called back.
'Did you hear me say crazy?' retorted Robby, but he took a run up and jumped, landing slumped over the fence. James hauled him over and he leant against the wall, massaging his bruised stomach. Albus landed fine, just twisting his ankle slightly. But Lily was much smaller than the others. She hit the fence and James didn't catch her quick enough. She slipped through his fingers and tumbled down, screaming.
Then suddenly a long, thin silver rope flew down and wrapped itself around her. Albus was leaning over the balcony, intense concentration on his face, the rope coming from his wand. 'Pull her up,' he grunted to James, who did so. The rope had metal strands and by the time Lily was onto the balcony James's hands were bleeding, but their sister was safe.
'That was almost scary,' said Lily flippantly, smiling. She tossed back her red hair and opened the door, leading them into a Ravenclaw girls' dormitory. The stairs turned into a slide, which sped their progress, and they were soon at the bottom.
'We should go down to the grounds and see what's going on,' said Albus. James led them through a shortcut. As they got out into the main Third Floor corridor, they were faced by a group of thugs from the Lestrange Army. They weren't great at magic, but they could throw a few nasty curses and were seriously strong. James shot a couple of spells into the group and dived to the left, but Albus, Robby and Lily dived to the right and disappeared down another staircase, followed by several thugs. Three followed James as he sprinted down a staircase. When he reached the bottom he flicked his wand, covering the stairs behind him with ice. One thug slipped and smashed his head open, but the other two retained their balance and carried on the chase. He shot a couple of Stunning and Disarming Spells behind him. The Stunners missed and smashed a window, but as he looked back he saw a stubby wand fly out the broken window. A red jet of light streaked over his head – he could feel its heat as he instinctively ducked and ran through a tapestry and down some more stairs. One thug ran through, but as the one behind hit it the tapestry inexplicably fought back, wrapping itself around the thug and then spitting him out, unconscious, onto the floor.
One thug left. James felt a couple of curses skim past him, and he turned to fire some back. But as he did so his foot caught on a corner of the carpet and he tumbled down the last few steps. The thug grinned and before he could get up he kicked him savagely in the side, before pointing his wand at him. But when he opened his mouth, it was to groan and slump forward on the floor.
Max was standing behind the thug, smiling in a satisfied way. 'You alright mate?' he helped James up. 'Come on, we'd better get going.' They headed down to the Grand Staircase. The Death Eaters, thugs and the odd troll or dark-looking creature were scattered through the school. The Staircase itself was cracked and broken, with a couple of disconcerting red streaks.
Flo, Ellisa and Lily, the three Gryffindor Chasers, were battling Quicksilver and McCoy. A Killing Curse missed Lily by a millimetre and hit Flo. James watched as she suddenly seemed to relax, falling down the marble steps. Lily turned, shocked and horrified, as Quicksilver raised his wand to strike.
James bellowed and shoved him away, his curse ricocheted off a step and tore hole in a curtain. He Stunned him and ran over to Flo. She was lying on the steps, a small smile on her face, her eyes glassy. James felt a lump in his throat as he remembered all those Quidditch evenings with her.
He couldn't leave her. He bundled her up in his arms – she was very light, and turned to Ellisa. 'Where do I take her?' Ellisa had tear tracks down her face. She silently pointed towards the Great Hall, not trusting herself to speak. James nodded and carried her in. It had been split in half, with dead bodies on one side and a makeshift Hospital on the other. James carefully placed Flo on one of the wooden pallets that had been laid out, and left, trying to keep a hold of his emotions.
When he got out into the Entrance Hall he looked around. A dark corner caught his eye, and he noticed a little girl, perhaps about nine or ten, standing there. She had long, waist length pale blonde hair, slightly curly, and pale skin. She was wearing a white summer dress, which was now rather torn and dirty. She was clutching a wand.
He headed over. 'Hey, what're you doing here?' as she turned to look at him, he saw a striking resemblance to Scorpius, and realised this was his little sister. 'Are you Scorpius's sister? What's your name?'
'Celesta,' the girl replied, a little reluctant.
'How did you get here?'
'Easy. Mother and Father used Floo to get here, and I just stepped in after them. They were so preoccupied they didn't notice,' Celesta said.
'Where did you get the wand from?'
'A dead Death Eater.' James saw Scorpius coming down the stairs, and held out a hand to Celesta.
'I can't leave you here, let's go see your big brother,' he said. Celesta shrugged and stepped forward, but her leg buckled beneath her and James had to catch her. 'Are you ok?'
'Hurt my leg,' she said. James picked her up and carried her over to Scorpius, who looked surprised at the sight of his little sister.
'I found your sister. She's hurt herself,' said James. Scorpius nodded and picked her up, carrying her off to the Hospital Wing. James watched them go, then turned and walked over to an archway, which had been thrown open, and looked out at the largest courtyard. It had stopped raining but was dark, and across the courtyard you could see flashes of light where people and creatures were battling.
Olivia appeared and came to stand next to him. 'It's a bit surreal, isn't it?' James nodded, then both of them looked around as Albus and Robby ran up, grinning. Both looked a little worse for wear, but seemed excited and full of energy.
'Come on, we've got Death Eaters to fight!' laughed Albus.
'We're only resting for a minute,' replied Olivia. 'Be careful, Robby.'
'Whatever. See you later, slow coaches!' the two boys grinned at each other and sprinted off across the courtyard. As they ran James saw a Death Eater raise his wand, pointing it at the stone wall, he opened his mouth to shout a warning but it was too late. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. The wall exploded into thousands of deadly sharp fragments, Albus was in the way of the blast, he was going to get hit. But Robby had seen what was happening and shoved Albus forward, making him fall behind a pillar and taking the full blow.
He collapsed on the floor. Olivia screamed and ran over to him, falling to her knees next to him. James followed, and saw that Robby was in a bad way. The fragments had damaged his chest beyond even magical repair. Each breath was a struggle, and blood seeped out of his ruined chest and mouth.
Tears were running down Olivia's face as she pulled out her wand, ready to try and heal him. But Robby weakly shook his head.
'No. There is nothing you can do,' he rasped.
'Don't say that Robby,' Olivia cried. 'You can be saved, I will save you!'
'Please, Olivia. Stay with me, when I go,' Olivia nodded, tears splashing onto his bloody torso. He gave a small smile, and took her hand. 'I'm sorry, Olivia. Tell Mum and Dad I'm sorry.' Albus crawled over, his face a mask of pain and grief, one arm hanging limp. It looked broken.
'Robby, mate, you saved my life,' cried Albus. 'I wish I was in your place. I wish this hadn't happened. Please don't go Robby!'
'Albus,' gasped Robby. 'I'm glad to have been your friend. Thank you.' Robby turned to James.
'Look after my sister, when I'm gone,' he said. Each word was more of a struggle than the one before. He was barely breathing, his skin was white. He gasped, squeezing Olivia's hand for the last time, and then he fell limp, and did not stir.
'ROBBY!' wailed Olivia. James was choked as he looked down at the boy, who minutes before had been full of life and vigour. He turned his head, and saw the Death Eater standing next to the shattered wall. Under the mask, a sneering smile was on his face. James felt anger well up inside him, but before he could try and kill him, the Death Eater turned and disappeared.
Olivia was lying across her little brother's body, sobs wracking her body. James gently touched her shoulder.
'Olivia, come on. We need to get Robby inside. Come on, it's going to be ok,' he said soothingly, trying to get past the frog in his throat. He needed to keep hold of his emotions; he had to be there for Albus and Olivia. Albus was kneeling by Robby's head, crying and looking utterly distraught.
After a while Olivia sat up and allowed James to gently pick Robby up and carry him in his arms to the Great Hall. He was shocked by the number of pallets that had been filled. He searched them desperately, and to his immense relief did not see his Dad or Lily. But he was horrified to see some other familiar faces.
He carefully placed Robby on a pallet, and slowly walked over to some pallets in the middle. Artie and Nigel were on two pallets that were close together. Artie's throat had been cut and Nigel looked as though he had been hit by the Killing Curse, as there was no noticeable damage. Their arms had been placed so they were pretty much holding hands.
And on the other side of Artie was Georgina, who looked as if her neck had been broken. James couldn't help it – as he looked down at the three bodies, he felt boiling hot, salty tears well up and tumble down his cheeks. There had to be a way to stop this.
Albus and Olivia were still standing by Robby's body. James walked over and saw that Albus now seemed to be feeling the pain in his arm more.
'Come on, Al, let's get your arm sorted out,' James said. 'Olivia, you should come too.' Olivia nodded weakly and he wrapped his arms around her. She let out all her emotions and cried onto his shoulder. They walked slowly over to the Hospital side. Madame Pomfrey was busy, but a number of Healers were there as well, and one was free.
'Come along dears,' she said. 'Yes, it's alright, come on, sit on this bed.' She tapped Albus's shoulder, elbow and wrist and the break healed. Then she turned to Olivia, who looked as if the world had ended. The Healer whipped out a small purple potion and handed it to Olivia, who drank it without asking what it was. James remember it from Potions and knew it was a Calming Draught for the Distressed.
'I think you should stay here for a bit, dear,' the Healer said, before looking at Albus. 'You should stay as well, that was a nasty break.'
'No. I want to get revenge for my best friend,' replied Albus in a hard voice.
'I see. And how are you?' she asked James.
'Fine. Just cuts and bruises really,' she nodded and indicated for the two brothers to go. They walked silently out onto the lawn, which was torn up and muddy from all the fighting. Suddenly there was a bang and the skull appeared in the sky again.
'YOU HAVE FOUGHT VALIANTLY, BUT YOU HAVE LOST MANY. YOU CANNOT WIN. YOU WILL BE DEFEATED. WE HAVE DECIDED TO BE MERCIFUL, AND WILL STOP FIGHTING. WE WILL STOP FIGHTING IF YOU GIVE TO US THE ELDEST SON OF THE SAVIOUR. GIVE HIM TO US IN THE FORBIDDEN FOREST, AND WE WILL RETREAT. IF YOU DO NOT, WE WILL DEFEAT AND KILL YOU ALL. GIVE HIM TO US. YOU HAVE HALF AN HOUR.' The skull faded away, leaving everyone speechless.
James felt his heart thumping in his chest. He knew that all through the school, the same name was being spoken. His name. He knew that if he did not hand himself in, he would be responsible for the deaths of everyone he knew and loved. He could not be held accountable for that. He knew what he had to do.
Albus grabbed his arm. 'James, don't do it. You can't hand yourself in. We'll keep fighting. This is just another scare tactic. We can win.' But James knew, from his face and his voice, that his brother didn't believe it.
'Give me the Cloak,' James said, surprised how calm he felt. He would stop all this fighting. Everything would be alright. Albus looked as though he was about to refuse and James pulled out his wand, making the Cloak fly out of Albus's pocket into his hand. He saw their father running across the lawn, trying to find him, and quickly pulled the Cloak on. He couldn't think about his father, or his mother, or anyone he knew. He just had to do it.
'Don't you dare tell anyone what's happening,' he said in a low voice to Albus. 'Not until it's happened. Got it? Not a word.' Albus nodded reluctantly and James walked into the Forest. There was hardly any light, and he had to be careful he did not trip or catch the Cloak in the undergrowth.
He saw a few dark shapes in the distance, but they did not come closer and he couldn't see exactly what they were. Finally he came to the edge of a clearing which was dimly lit by harsh, white flames. Death Eaters stood at the edges, with Dorabella and Trixor at the centre. The flickering light lit up Dorabella's hooded eyes and made Trixor's face look like a skull with skin stretched over it, the puckered white scar showing up even more.
'Where is he?' muttered Trixor.
'Over here,' said James in a slightly mocking voice, pulling off the Cloak and stuffing it in his pocket. The Death Eaters yelled and several curses shot towards James, who ducked behind a tree. Jeering laughs filled the clearing. James sprung to his feet and shot a spell at Dorabella. To his surprise it bounced straight off her unprotected chest, hitting a tree and making a huge gouge mark. He fired more at the pair, but they all just rebounded.
'Can't get us like that, Potter!' she cried in her high, screeching voice. 'After him!' James turned and sprinted through the trees. He could hear the Death Eaters running behind him, feeling the curses fly past him. Then Dorabella screeched:
'Stay back! He is ours!' the Death Eaters seemed to drop back, but Dorabella and Trixor were incredibly fast and were soon gaining on him, Killing Curses burnt him as they flew past. But then he heard a terrible, agonised yell and spun around. Everywhere had become freezing cold, it was even darker. Fighting the increasing panic and depression, he ran back towards the cry.
Trixor was kneeling in a small clearing, surrounded by Dementors. He looked terrified as the biggest Dementor swooped down upon him and grasped him by the jaw, wrenching his mouth open. There was a wail from Dorabella in the trees, and her wildcat cat Patronus leapt towards the Dementors. But there had been very little happiness in her life, and the Patronus sputtered out and disappeared. James frowned and pulled out his wand, thinking of the first happy thought that came into his head. A bright white stag burst and charged towards the Dementors. But the damage had been done – the Dementor had placed its ghastly lips around Trixor and sucked out his soul. The Dementors scattered and Trixor's body fell to the ground, lifeless.
Dorabella gave an agonised wail, and stumbled over to her brother's body, collapsing on her knees next to him. James watched as she felt true sadness for the first time in her life. Suddenly she reached into a fold of her ragged dress and pulled out a lethal, serrated knife.
'No!' James couldn't help himself. 'Don't do it.' Dorabella looked up at him, madness in her eyes.
'I have nothing to live for,' she snarled. 'Without Trixor, there is nothing for me in this life.' To James's surprise and confusion she pulled a silver chain from around her neck. On the end of the chain sat a large, round crystal. Underneath the surface it moved like a tiny black cyclone or hurricane. She grimaced up at James. 'This is the reason for mine and Trixor's incredible power. This is one of the thirteen Jewels of Azcaroth. They were mined deep in the earth with magic. They make the wearer infinitely powerful and invincible. Eleven were destroyed for they were Dark Magic, but we found the remaining two. They made us unbeatable, but for one major flaw. They attracted Dementors. and now, because of that, I do not wish to live.' She threw the jewel away and, before James could stop her, raised the knife and plunged it into her heart.
James watched as she slumped on top of her brother. His two great adversaries were dead. But he didn't feel happy. Overall, he felt sadness. After a while he walked forward and looked down at Trixor's neck. Sure enough, there was the glint of a silver chain, hidden by his collar. He pulled it out, and retrieved Dorabella's one. To his surprise they fell hot in his hands, as if they were full of life and energy.
The Death Eaters seemed to have scattered in the forest as he walked back. He went via the lake and stood at the edge, looking out over the still, grey waters. Then he lobbed the two Jewels of Azcaroth as far as he could. They fell with a small splash, then disappeared under the murky waters. Never to be found again, he hoped.
Many people had gathered around the edge of the forest, and a murmur passed like a current when he emerged. He saw his friends, Albus and Lily, and his parents, looking both angry and incredibly relieved and happy. His mother ran forward and hugged him.
'Trixor and Dorabella are dead, or as good as,' he said in as loud a voice as he could muster. Then he felt his knees buckle beneath him. His father and Teddy ran forward and helped him to his feet.
'Come along, son, let's get you to bed,' Harry said in a low voice. 'Come on.' James let them half-drag, half-carry him into the castle, the entire school watching him go.
The battle was over. It had been won, but at a terrible cost.
The battle is won! As ever, please tell me what you think. I was a bit disappointed by the reviews I got for the last chapter but thank you to those who did review! I hope I did this chapter well, and gave each person who died their due.
I have exams at the moment, but I will try and update as soon as possible – this is part of my English revision ;-)
