No character death occurs in this chapter.
There was a whirring sound the second Loki appeared in the training room. Meanwhile, Natasha was trying to hold back Clint from attacking Loki head-on.
"JARVIS, no!" shouted Tony. "Save the missiles for Thanos."
Everyone except Bruce was shocked. Missiles?
Noticing that people were staring at him, Tony hurriedly defended himself.
"I was a WMD developer. I still know how to build missiles."
Loki was still kneeling on the ground, shock still coursing through his body. Had he really done all of those horrible things, hurt his dear friends, kill all of those innocents?
Loki had never so desperately wished that reality was a nightmare more than he did now, not even when he discovered his lineage. He pinched himself several times, like the Midgardians did in their books, but he was still surrounded by people who he hurt and betrayed several times over. It wasn't a nightmare; it was real.
Natasha finally lost her grip on Clint, and the archer ran over toward Loki and kicked him in the stomach. He kicked him again and again, until finally he grabbed Loki by the collar and looked him hard in the eyes.
"You better run, bastard, because if you don't, or I catch you, you're dead."
Loki knew better than to stick around, no matter his feelings. He stumbled to his feet and fled, ignoring the shouts behind him. He turned a corner and sent an illusion copy the other way, but that wouldn't buy him much time. JARVIS saw all, and JARVIS was loyal to Tony.
It was a desperate hope, but maybe JARVIS didn't see all. Loki scampered desperately to the only room that wouldn't have cameras. Tony's bedroom would give him enough solace and time to do what he had to.
…
Thor ran after his brother, Natasha ran to hold back Clint (again), and Bruce took calming breaths, but the rest of the room occupants stood there, stunned. Finally, Pietro spoke up, addressing Clint.
"Why are you so pissed, bro? He was a slave of Thanos, just as controlled as you were."
Clint was still breathing heavily. "I admit I'm not at my most rational. He made me kill dozens of innocent agents, break all of the SHIELD protocol. He was able to control me because I stepped forward, concerned about him after he died. Wouldn't you be angrey at someone who made you kill people on your side, regardless if they were controlled themselves?"
"Point. But he's the only person who knows of Thanos's plans. You kill him, and we loose that information."
Steve spoke up. "I know I'm always the person who sees the brighter side of people, but there's a chance he's still under control. The only thing we've heard him say was 'What have I done?' We need to pursue."
"JARVIS," Tony commanded, "where is Loki?"
Clint renewed his efforts to escape Natasha's embrace, but JARVIS replied anyway.
"He entered your room, sir. Per your request, I have no cameras in there, but nothing seems to be damaged."
Tony cursed and ran out of the gym, the rest of the group following him. "JARVIS, get surveillance in there, now!"
…
Loki had no doubt Thanos was watching, using his omnipresent gauntlet allowing him to observe his ex-servant's flee. Revenge was the only thing stopping Thanos from invading Midgard, he realized. If the Avengers didn't punish Loki enough, Thanos would come to Earth and destroy Loki himself, butchering anything and everything in the way as a sacrifice for Lady Death.
There was only one way to tell this to the Avengers: a mental message. He just hoped Thanos's omnipresence didn't extend to the contents of his magic. Time was of the essence, so Loki had to send the message to the person he last sent one to: Clint.
"Hello Clint. It's me, Loki. I know you would rather hear anyone else before you heard me, but the fate of the Earth depends on you taking this message to heart. On Titan, I tried to bargain the Tesseract for my memories, but Thanos did not take kind in my attempted betrayal. He gave me my memories back and put me back so the Avengers would kill me slowly and painfully. If you fail to do this, he will come to Midgard and destroy it. You have to convince everyone, including my brother, that I am tricking you into letting your guard down. Do whatever you have to.'
"One more thing. I am not under Thanos's control any longer. I remember playing that video game with you. I remember Dr. Phillip. I remember what you told me about Barney. I remember our friendship. I am sorry that I controlled you, but the only reason I did was because I trusted you, even when I couldn't remember you. Forgive me, but show no mercy. This will only buy you some time."
Loki had so much more he wanted to say. After all, it was the last thing he could truthfully tell anyone without Thanos figuring out his plan. Alas, his magic was drained, and Loki passed out on the hardwood floor.
…
The mob of superheroes ran into a forlorn-looking Thor on the way to Tony's bedroom. He explained that the Loki he pursued was an illusion, and attached himself to the herd.
The gaggle was only a hallway from Tony's room when Clint cried out again in anger. This time, everybody stopped and looked at him. It looked like he was angry at something inside his head. Like a switch was pulled, his face became blank, but he turned angry again.
Exasperated, Tony opened his mouth, but Clint spoke first.
"Steve's right. This is a trick. Loki just taunted me. He's still under Thanos's control. Whatever he says, don't believe him. He's trying to lull us into pity, and kill us all."
The hope seeped out of the rest of the Avengers, hope that Loki really was off of the control, hope that their team could be whole again. Without ceremony, Steve opened the door, reached under Tony's bed, and dragged out Loki's body. With perhaps a grip too gentle, he carried Loki into a holding cell until SHIELD took him into custody.
Perhaps Loki is OOC here, but...
