Chapter 34
Emotions
Jayla's POV
I open my eyes slowly and winced a bit as light flooded in them. I began to sit up only to grab my side in pain.
"Good to see you're up," came an older sounding woman's voice. I looked at the door and saw a woman with darker toned skin, black hair, and wearing a maroon smock with a white apron.
"Where am I? Who are you?" I asked.
"My name is Martha. Yusei and Crow brought you to me after Yusei's duel with Kalin where you got hurt," she explained.
"Where's my master?" I asked alert.
"He's alright. I almost forgot what Yusei had said about him in your eyes," Martha told me. "He's been waiting for you to wake up your know?"
"How long was I out?" I asked trying to sit up again.
"For your question, almost a full two days. Secondly, you need to rest. You shouldn't be sitting up yet after what happened," Martha told me gently holding me down.
"I have to get to my master," I told her.
"I'm right here, Jayla," Yusei stated walking in. "And I'm not your master."
"I need to go get Jayla some food. You guys obviously need to talk to each other," Martha stated before walking out.
"Are you alright?" I asked my master.
"I'm fine, Jayla. You don't have to worry about me. I'm not the one who got poisoned and then stabbed by a piece of metal," Yusei responded. He gave me a frustrated, annoyed stare. "Speaking of which, you promised me you wouldn't do something like this again."
"I had no choice," I told him looking down, not able to hold his gaze. "I couldn't let you get hurt."
"But Jayla not only did you almost die from those flames, but you also nearly died from being stabbed," Yusei responded walking beside me. He used his finger to gently make me face him. "Jayla, you need to realize how much I can't risk losing you like that."
"Master," I began but quickly correctly myself, "Yusei, I can't lose you either." Yusei sat down on a chair next to me. His eyes turned to one with a prodding for more information. "Yusei, I…" I trailed off.
Yusei pushed a piece of hair behind my ear making me blush. "I'm here, Jayla," he told me as he looked straight into my eyes. I quickly adverted my sight to something else. But my eyes quickly returned to his as he placed a hand on my cheek. "No matter what, Jayla, I will never let you die. I care for you too much to allow that to happen."
"Yusei, I…" I was cut off by Yusei's lips that attached to mine. My heart immediately skipped a beat and I went wide eyed shocked. After a minute of shock, I slowly returned the kiss. I didn't know why when I could've just pulled away, but I returned it. When Yusei pulled back, I whispered, "I… think I've figured out who I want."
"And who's that?" Yusei asked.
"You," I answered honestly.
I saw Yusei grin before he touched his lips to mine again. When he pulled back, he whispered, "I'm here, Jayla. I will never let anything happen to you if I can stop it."
I nodded slowly though my dragon side made me worried about what would happen despite knowing he was strong enough to be alright. Someone knocked on the door and we turned as the cracked open door completely opened to show Martha walking in with a plate of sliced apples.
"You know, you and Yusei are just the same," Martha stated as she handed me the apples.
"I'm not sure about…" I started but Yusei cut me off.
"Jayla, remember, we are equals in this world," he stated. I looked down.
"I mean of how you two try to do things," Martha stated. "You seem like you try to do things yourself, Jayla, and end up getting hurt. Yusei does the exact same thing."
"It's my job to protect my master," I stated and Yusei looked at me forcing me to correct myself, "Yusei. It's what I must do and no one else should help me as they will only get hurt."
"Yusei told me all about what's going on, Jayla, and how you feel," Martha stated. "But you both also have friends who will help you no matter what and are by your side. You need to let others help."
"I understand," I responded looking down a bit in thought.
"After that injury, you'll be needing a good deal of bed rest," Martha told me. "So you'll be resting."
"But I have to…" I tried but Yusei cut me off.
"Jayla, I'm going to help Martha in keeping you down for a while. You're still pretty weak after that poison and getting stabbed by that piece of metal," he stated. "You need the rest."
"But…" I started.
"No buts, Jayla," Yusei interrupted. "I'm serious when I say you need the rest and you won't be able to do anything if you stay in this condition. And you'll be healing a lot longer if you push yourself before you should."
"Listen to Yusei, Jayla," Martha ordered. "And if you leave before you're healed up, those wounds are just the beginning."
"Alright," I agreed looking down.
"Now go ahead and eat," Martha told me. "I'll be helping the others with their colds if you need me. Yusei, you stay with her and watch her for now."
Yusei nodded. "Besides, I have idea on what she would try to do if I left now," he stated looking at me with stern, piercing eyes. I looked to the side, trying to avoid his gaze while Martha walked out. "Jayla, why did you save me to this point when you promised me you wouldn't?"
"I wanted to fulfill my promise. But my dragon side forces me to do as I was created to do. Protect you with everything I have, including my life," I answered.
"You need to let your human side flourish even with your dragon side there. You can't let your dragon side make all the decisions for you," Yusei responded.
"But I don't have a choice," I responded. I shook my head trying to keep my tears of my turmoil of emotions in. "I can't do that."
"You can, Jayla," Yusei responded. "You're just afraid to try."
"I… can't," I responded in a whisper as a tear fell down my cheek.
Yusei took off his glove and placed his hand on my cheek before stroking away the tear with his thumb. He carefully brought me into him without hurting my wounded side.
"It'll be okay," he whispered in my hair. A few more tears broke free and landed on his shoulder. "I know it's frightening to think about and how hard it'll probably be. But you can do it, Jayla. You're strong. And when I say strong, I don't me physical strength. I mean your heart. You are you and your human side is stronger than your dragon. You need to let that be so." I placed my face against his shoulder. "After all, if your human side couldn't flourish, I'm sure you wouldn't be able to love me. If your human side was truly weaker, you would be forced to go with Arch. You are stronger than you let yourself think, Jayla. Don't push yourself down; don't push your human side down because it's still there."
"I… I understand," I whispered into his shoulder.
"I'm here, Jayla," he whispered. "I'll help you."
I gave a small nod against his shoulder. "I don't want to lose you, Yusei," I told him.
"You won't, Jayla, I promise," he responded and I gripped his shirt. He slowly let go of me. "Why don't you get some rest? I'll be right here, okay?" I nodded and slowly lied down on my left side as my right was the one that was injured.
I let my eyes close and sleep take me over despite knowing I didn't need it.
