Chapter 37

Running as quickly as his short legs allow, Bilbo heads back toward the secret entrance. As he reaches the top platform, he sees Thorin step out. Looking surprised to see the hobbit, Thorin says "You're alive." Bilbo, panting and trying to avoid thinking about what could have possibly happened to Kelly, tries to keep moving while answering "Not for much longer!" The few moments that followed were filled with tense conversation that ended with Thorin pointing his sword at Bilbo threateningly. Suddenly, the rest of the Dwarves come bursting into the room and look terrified to see the dragon running toward all of them. "Come on!" Thorin yells as he turns and runs towards another hallway. The Company follows, barely escaping Smaug's flames with the only casualty being Thorin's outer coat.

"Where is she?!" Dwalin practically shouts at Bilbo as he searches the room again, hoping he missed seeing her. As their burglar looks down and scuffs his foot, Dwalin nods stonily before turning around and following behind Thorin who leads them out of the room. They slowly move their way through the mountain halls, being as quiet as possible. "We've given him the slip." This hopeful comment came from Dori which was followed by Dwalin shaking his head. "No, he's too cunning for that." Even Thorin noticed that Dwalin's voice already sounded a little dead. What would happen to his friend if Kelly was really dead?

Opening her eyes, Kelly barely avoided screaming as she realized that she was completely surrounded by gold. Wiggling around, the woman soon found her way to the top of the gold and peeked out looking for the dragon. She heard yelling echo through the mountain and growled softly. Pulling her body out, she took off in the direction of the noise, unknowingly heading straight for the forges. "Dwalin!" Her voice came out strong and she stumbled slightly as she felt sparks on her tongue. "What has that dragon's fire done to me?" Shaking her head at the unanswerable question, Kelly continued running toward where she could hear roars from Smaug.

Skidding to a halt, Kelly realized that there was a dragon between her and the company. Thankfully, there was a metal wall in between the Company and the dragon but even that wasn't going to last long. She noticed the flames were lit on the forge and her eyes automatically searched for Dwalin. He probably thought she was dead, again. Smaug began throwing himself against the metal wall and through all the noise, Kelly heard the Dwarves yelling at each other. "They're going to start the gold to melting, but why?" As quickly as she could, Kelly began sneaking past the dragon who was so focused that he probably wouldn't have noticed her if she had walked under his bulking form. Once she got through the gate, Kelly hid herself in a dark corner in case she was needed. Smaug thought she was dead and showing herself could ruin the surprise that she needed. If he was caught off guard by her appearance, that might give them a moment if anything went wrong. This also gave her a chance to examine her body for any changes.

Her mind was still as stretched as it had been but something was different. Running her hands through her hair, Kelly stopped as she noticed a scar missing on her wrist. Now that she looked more closely, Kelly noticed that she couldn't find any scars on her hands or arms. "It healed my body. All of my body." Barely able to contain her excitement, the woman pulled her shirt up and noticed the lack of scar on her abdomen. Her body was fixed! If she survived this, she may be able to have children! In her excitement, she gripped her cheeks with joy to keep her shouts inside her mouth. As she did so, she realized that she didn't feel the familiar tug of her scar on her cheek. That scar was gone too, completely gone! Dwalin could look at her again without flinching with guilt!

Suddenly, an extremely loud roar from the dragon brought her back to the present, and she looked on in horror as Smaug stalked toward Thorin. Dwalin, trying his best to protect his king, ran at the dragon with his weapon raised. Pushing off the wall, Kelly sprinted at Dwalin and jumped in front of him just as the dragon let loose a load of flames. The self-contented look in the dragon's eyes turned to surprise as his flames stopped short and swirled into a beautiful design before dissipating into the forge fires nearby. Standing in front of the shocked dwarf now stood a woman. "You!" Smaug's outraged cry brought everyone's attention to the woman standing proud in front of Dwalin. Her hair was flowing softly from the wind caused by the bellows and she stood in an extremely protective stance. That, however, wasn't what impressed the dragon. It was the savage look on her beautiful face and the fire dancing in her eyes. "This is impossible! I smote you myself with the fire from my own mouth!"

Kelly laughed loudly before holding her hand out, allowing a flame to collect in her hand. "Oh dearest dragon, don't you understand? I am impossible. You think you are the only being left who can wield fire? The fire you use and any fire on this earth loves me and answers to me!" Once she finished her speech, she immediately threw the fireball in her hand directly at the dragon's face before grabbing Dwalin's hand and running for cover. "Thorin! Whatever you plan on doing, do it now!"
