Chapter 38-Wishing
As prompted by Gryffindor 20-Jamie learns what it's like to lose your child even for a few seconds and Katy asks Santa a very confusing question.
If someone could have pinpointed the exact moment that Jamie Reagan had felt the pure undiluted panic in the aftermath of Jason Callan he would describe it as the Christmas Eve three weeks after that incident.
They had been Christmas shopping. Him and the five year old Katy in what could only be described as the warm-up to Black Friday. Jamie doubted even handcuffing his daughter to him would stop the onslaught of happy holiday makers, and he was seriously considering flashing his badge as a way to get in front of the line.
He had looked up from what could only be described as the most overpriced alcohol ever to repeatedly by rote tell Katy-do not touch anything but before the words had even come out of his mouth he realised with a sinking clarity that he couldn't see his daughter anywhere.
Jamie took a deep breath swallowing down the fear. Now was not the time to have a full blown panic attack. Now was the time he needed to be a cop.
The chocking pressure on his throat didn't agree with him however and he wanted to scream Katy's name over and over but he couldn't force out the words…
"Daddy" came a voice to his left and Jamie took a deep breath feeling the air return with a dizzying effect that nearly made him stumble.
"Katy" he crooned scooping up the mess of blonde hair and peanut butter and muddy jeans uncaring of what people said or thought of him.
"Kate" he said dropping the y in his panic "Where the hell have you been-what the hell did I tell you about running off?"
Katy shrugged her face confused "I had to ask Santa something by the talking tree"
Jamie shuddered. The talking tree was a thing of nightmare in his family. It was a large Christmas tree complete with eyes and a talking mouth that played carols. It was awful because it generally involved at least one child (whose last name was nearly always Reagan) climbing over the safety fence to see if the tree was real. Nikki had loved the tree and more than once Erin had had to pull her back over the fence, Jack had admired the tree but hadn't wanted to go near it, Sean had hated it and Katy was deeply suspicious of it.
"Santa?" he asked and Katy sighed nodding "I wanted to ask him something extra for Christmas" she said linking her hand with Jamie's "but he said there was nothing he could do"
Katy rolled her eyes, before looking down and Jamie sighed. He hoped he didn't have to have the 'Santa isn't real talk' with his daughter just yet.
It turned out he didn't. The next day Katy opened up her presents with meticulous care, that was after attempting to build them into a tower and was stopped by Danny who was on his third scotch before ten and church.
"So kid" he said downing another drink and reaching for the bottle. "I heard you attempted to run off again" Katy shook her head her French plat (curtesy of Nikki) bobbing with her "No Uncle Danny I had to ask Santa a question"
Danny chuckled "Well what was it?" Katy shrugged.
"Nah come on kid, let's hear it" his grandpa said from the armchair and Katy shrugged leaving her presents to grasp at her worn unicorn. "I asked him if momma could come home for Christmas" she said shrugging.
Jamie sucked in a gasp of air feeling the mask he had so long acquired for this conversation slip back on. He didn't need anyone to see the slice that had took through his heart.
Danny's hand had wrapped itself around his wrist and Jamie wanted to shake it off.
Katy looked up her blue eyes wide before crawling into Jamie's lap "Don't be sad daddy" she whispered and Jamie shook his head "No baby I'm not sad" in truth he didn't know what he was.
Later that night Jamie tucked Katy into bed resorting the three stuffed animals she now slept with. This included the Snowman Nikki had got her and the teddy bear his father had. Soon his daughter's bedroom would become a menagerie.
"I'm sorry I made you sad" Katy said her eyes heavy with sleep and Jamie gave a small sigh "You didn't Katy-Kat" he said brushing back a stray messy curl "All that matters was that you had a great Christmas" Katy nodded "I did" she muttered before her eyelids fell shut. Jamie grinned allowing himself the moment to take another deep breath before leaving the room.
Just as he was on the hunt for the scotch there was a knock at the door. He went to open it his hand still grasping the bottle by the head.
It was Danny, he looked tired and his eyes widened when he saw the bottle in Jamie's hand.
"What" Jamie said distinctly unimpressed and Danny sighed again. "Get two glasses" was all he said pushing his way in and Jamie growled in anger "I don't need you to watch me constantly" he said through gritted teeth and Danny laughed.
"I know" was all he said "But what are brothers for?"
Next Chapter-When she's fifteen Katy gets her first haircut without Jamie's supervision-the aftereffects shock the whole family.
