It didn't take the three of them long to pack up what little was left of the things that Kate wanted to take to the loft. Well it didn't take her long, Rick and Thomas were having more fun messing around with the sheets and bedding that Kate had asked them to take off the bed. She didn't mind it however because it meant that they were both entertained and she could get on with what actually needed to been done.
Just as she started on the last pile of things there was a knock at the door. As she stood she shouted into the bedroom, "I'll get it," before she headed towards the door. As she opened it she heard a muffled acknowledgement from Rick. Kate smiled when she saw that Ryan and Esposito had just arrived, complete with Lanie and Jenny.
"Hey," she greeted them all as she stood to one side to let them in, "Thanks for coming guys."
"Hope you don't mind that we invited Lanie and Jenny," Ryan said as they walked past, "But we sort of assumed that Castle would want to celebrate you moving into the loft once we got there."
Kate smiled at him, "That's fine Ryan." She looked around the group and said, "I've just a few things left to pack then we're all good to go."
Lanie nodded before she asked, "Where's writer boy?"
Just as the words left her mouth Rick appeared at the top of the stairs with Thomas, both complete with capes made from the sheets they were meant to have been folding.
"Who was at the door?" Rick asked as he came into view, not really paying attention to who was actually in the room.
"Nice cape," Esposito teased in response.
"Yeah writer boy," Lanie continued, "Really suits you."
Rick just shrugged, he really didn't care that they were teasing him; he and Thomas had had a lot of fun playing super heroes. "Really Castle," Kate commented as he and Thomas carefully came down the stairs, making sure not to trip on either of the capes, especially Thomas' which was so long, "All I asked you to do was strip the bed to leave it ready for Martha."
Rick gave her a sheepish smile as he came to the bottom of the stairs. Kate tried to look disapproving but that was soon shattered by Thomas running towards her, his massive cape flowing behind him, and stopped at her feet. He reached up and Kate laughed before she picked him up and spun him around. Once she had him settled on her hip she looked at him and asked, "Did you have fun Thomas?"
He nodded happily, a wide smile on his face from both playing dress up with Rick and Kate's antics. He then looked over Kate's shoulder and Kate saw a little frown appear on his face and Thomas sink a little in her arms, obviously hiding from the group of people behind Kate. Kate turned and waited for Rick to join them before she spoke softly to Thomas. "You've already meet Lanie and this is Jenny."
"Hey there little guy," Jenny said in a low voice. Ryan had warned her in the car about how scared this little boy was of new people at the moment so she knew that she needed to be gentle. "Nice to meet you."
As Thomas lifted his head again Rick undid his cape and let it fall to the floor before he started on Thomas'. Once that was off Kate put Thomas back on his own two feet. He stood for a moment, unsure, but then Ryan stuck his tongue out at the boy, just like he had been doing earlier in the precinct, and Thomas laughed, clearing the silence that had descended on the room.
While Ryan and Esposito played with Thomas for a little bit, having been offered Clint by the quiet boy and made the bear growl at the boy, Rick and Kate picked up and folded the sheets that they had been using as the capes. Once they were folded Kate set them both on the sofa, in what little room there was in between the boxes, and then turned to Lanie and Jenny. "I'd say grab a seat," Kate stated, looking at Lanie and Jenny, "But there are boxes all over the place."
Lanie and Jenny both smiled at her and nodded in understanding. "So how are you Jenny?" Kate asked.
Jenny's smile turned to a beam as she replied, "I've got a little bit of morning sickness but it isn't half as bad as I was led to believe it would be. Plus it'll be worth it in a few months when there's a little one at home."
Lanie and Kate both beamed at her while Rick headed over to where Ryan and Espo were still entertaining Thomas, leaving the girls to talk about whatever they wanted to. It didn't take long for the boys to look around and realise that the boxes were going to need to be moved at some point or another.
"Thomas," Rick instructed, "Why don't you go and sit with Kate so me, Ryan and Esposito can start moving the boxes."
Thomas nodded and happily went over to Kate while Esposito, Ryan and Rick all looked around the apartment. "So where do you want to start bro?" Esposito asked, looking at Rick for instruction.
Rick shrugged. "It's all got to go so anything really."
The two of them nodded and then both went to the nearest boxes and picked up a few each before they headed to the door. Rick opened it for them quickly before he went and picked up some boxes of his own.
Kate, Lanie and Jenny all watched them go and then all shared a smile before Kate pulled Thomas onto her lap. "Did you have fun with Rick?" she asked while Lanie and Jenny watched on, both liking this side of Kate that they hadn't really seen before.
Thomas nodded before he looked down and whispered, "We jumped on the bed."
Kate could tell that jumping on the bed was something that Thomas hadn't really down before by the way he said it. "Did you now," Kate marvelled while Jenny and Lanie smiled, "Was the fun?"
This time Thomas nodded more vigorously and Kate, Lanie and Jenny laughed. Just as the laughter died down Kate's phone rang. "I'll take him," Jenny volunteered as Kate looked towards the coffee table where she had left her phone when she and Rick had arrived earlier. Kate smiled at her and handed Thomas over, the young boy looking curious at his change of scenery, before she moved away from where the four of them had been standing and picked up the phone.
"Sir," Kate greeted as she answered it and put it to her ear, "Is there a problem with the paperwork?"
She listened for a moment, pacing the floor a little as she did, before she nodded to herself and said, "Yes sir. Thanks for letting me know. Because it's obviously not going to take long I'd like to take the day off tomorrow to go and get everything sorted." There was another pause as Kate listened before she spoke again. "Thank you sir."
She hung up and put the phone back onto the table before she went back over to Lanie and Jenny, who was still holding Thomas, and were who were all watching her closely. Before Lanie could ask what the Captain had wanted Thomas looked at Jenny and asked, "Why is there a bump in you belly?"
"Thomas," Kate chided, "You can't ask people things like that ok. Some people won't like it."
"Sorry," Thomas mumbled, not looking at anyone.
"Hey it's ok," Jenny said in a gentle tone, "I don't mind." She waited until Thomas was looking at her again before she answered his question. "There's a bump because there's a baby growing in there Thomas."
Thomas was silent for a moment before he smiled and then looked down at Jenny's stomach. It looked flat to anyone who looked at it, but Thomas could obviously feel the bump against his legs. "Hello baby," he whispered.
Kate, Lanie and Jenny all shared a look, amazed at how this boy who had been through so much in the last few days, his parents dying, him being snatched by the killer and then having to live with two complete strangers, still managed to be so innocent and sweet.
They were all still smiling when Rick, Ryan and Esposito all arrived back to pick up some more boxes.
Did anyone watch the 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who yesterday? I went to the cinema with a friend to see it and I loved it, they had all the Doctors in it and the interactions between David's doctor and Matt's doctor were incredible, they worked so well together.
Anyway, thanks for reading, hopefully the next chapter will be up soon.
