Chapter 36
I could hear his footsteps down the hall making his way to my office. The sound of his cheery good morning to everyone made me roll my eyes as I waited for his grand entrance. He opened the door with a big smile and sat down. "Good morning, Mr. Helmsley."
"What's up with that mood?"
"So how was Canada? Anything interesting there?"
"Actually, no. Not to you anyway." I smiled back.
"Come on. Tell me why you went to Canada and I'll give you a raise."
"You do know I can give myself a raise if I wanted to, right?"
"Oh, right." He smiled as he scratched his head. "Anyway, what's in Canada? Your nanny seemed to think it was business, but since I didn't send you there, I know it's not business."
"Vince, could you please let this go?"
"Are you training again? Is that why you went to Canada?"
"Why would I go all the way to Canada to train? I have a gym at home."
"I meant in the ring."
"Oh… nope, that's never going to happen." I smiled wickedly.
"New talent?" He inquired with a searching stare.
"Vince, I don't do talent. You have Johnny Ace for that."
"I wish you would do talent. You have such a good eye."
"Why are you here?" I asked as his daydreaming fantasies annoyed me.
"I'm just checking up on you. Is that so wrong?" He smiled even though he noticed I was impatient with him.
I looked at the old man who once was the most important man in my life and couldn't help but smile. That old tired man in front of me that tried his best to hide how broken he was, gave me a chance and believed in me and my abilities when I was just starting in this business. He created me and invested in me. Looking at him now, I decided it was time for him to know how my life changed in the past few months. "Okay, while you're here. I need to tell you something."
"Sounds serious." He said as he sat down.
"Well, it is serious and you're going to find out sooner or later. I want you to hear it from me."
"I'm all ears."
Here it goes. "I've been seeing someone for the past few months."
"You?" He pointed at me in disbelieve. "Seeing someone? A woman?"
"Yes, a woman. Are you okay with this?"
"Okay? I'm more than okay. I've been waiting for you to make that step for a long time. Does Rory know?"
"Rory knows, the guys know, everyone loves her."
"So everyone knows? Everyone but me…" He suddenly stopped and lowered his gaze.
Looking at him, I suddenly realized I somehow always misjudge him. "Vince, I just didn't know how to tell you. I don't want you to think that I…"
"What? Forgot about Stephanie? I know you haven't and you never will, but I also know that she would never want you to be alone forever."
"I'm sorry, Vince. I just thought…"
"I understand. I know you think I blame you, but I don't and you should stop blaming yourself too. I know you don't like to talk about all this, but I just want you to know that I will always love you like a son and I will always be grateful for what you've done for this company."
"You know this company was my family and my life from day one. I would never dream of being anywhere else."
"I know." He smiled. "So when do I get to meet the lucky lady?"
"You've already met her."
"I have? Does she work here?"
"No."
"Then how did I meet her?"
"Vince…" I smiled. I could see the wheels in his head to the work as he slowly figured it out.
"No! Renee?"
"Yes."
"Wow. I didn't see this one coming."
"Neither did I."
"As long as you're happy. I know Rory loves her and they get along great. As for your degenerate pals, I'm sure they like her too otherwise you wouldn't be with her."
"I don't listen to my degenerate pals."
"Really? Do I have to remind you of a certain dark moment in your history called the curtain call? They've always gotten you in trouble."
"True, but how many times did I get them out of troubles?"
"More times than my poor heart can remember."
We started laughing as Vince stood up. "I'm inviting myself and Linda to dinner Friday night, to spend some time with you guys and the new addition to your life."
"Rory would be ecstatic."
I was relieved that he took it so well. As I sat there thinking about how my life changed in the past few months and how much progress I made, I realized how truly lucky I was. I always knew I had good friends, but I never fully understood how much they really wanted me to be happy.
I could see it clearly now. Renee made this happen. She made me open my eyes and see the things my broken heart prevented me from seeing. I was lucky that they never lost faith in me and never gave up on me. I see it now and I'm grateful that I made this change before it was too late.
An idea suddenly popped into my head and I smiled. This would be perfect. I thought as I started looking online.
I asked my secretary to call the head of our graphic designing department to my office and started to search for certain pictures online. As I saved a few on my desktop, a knock on the door startled me.
"Hey, Alex, come in."
"Hi, boss."
"Listen, I'll send some pictures to your Email. I want you to design something cool for each one of the pictures and write this in every design." I asked as I handed him a note. "You'll understand when you see the pictures. Make it impressive, like all the cool stuff you usually do."
"Sure thing, boss. When do you need it?"
"I think it would make a nice Christmas present. Take your time with it, but I will need it like a week before Christmas."
"Cool. No problem."
"Oh and I will need to frame it, so I need it to be this big." I showed him the size of the picture I have of Rory.
The clock showed 5 when I finally found the time to lift my head up from the computer. Right before I switched my computer off, I received a notification Email for the annual Christmas party of the company. I smiled as I noticed the date of the party, because I knew Renee's parents were supposed to be here with us. This could be really cool. I thought as I reached for my phone.
I called Renee's parents and her mom answered. I could tell she was excited to hear from as she told George it was me. I smiled. Olivia was just like Renee, always smiling and positive. She was moved by my invitation to the Christmas party and thanked me again for making all the errands for their trip. All I could think of was making their daughter happy.
I got home around 7 and walked in to the sounds of soothing yoga music. I rolled my eyes and found my daughter and the 3 women of the family in the living room with Dally. Surprisingly enough, my daughter waved at me, but the rest just ignored me. I walked past them and found Shawn and Kevin in the kitchen, drinking beer and reading the newspaper.
"So this is what our lives have come to, beer, eyeglasses, newspapers and wives doing yoga?"
"Yeah…" Kevin grinned. "Ain't it great?"
"Where are your kids?" I snatched the paper out of Shawn's hands.
"Hey! Not cool! They are upstairs in Rory's room Xboxing."
"Stop trying to be cool, there's no such word. Is it too hard to just say playing the Xbox?"
"Xboxing sounds cooler. Give me back my paper!"
"So what's up with the full attendance?"
"Your woman invited us all for dinner."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I never say no to free meals." Shawn mumbled.
Kevin started laughing as Shawn snatched the paper from my hand and continued reading. "She just wanted us all to hang out, she said we hardly ever do that."
I smiled and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. "Cool. So I'll just jump in the shower real quick and see you in a few."
"Not so fast." Kevin grabbed my arm. "We need to talk."
"What's up?"
"What's this about your little blond wanting to have a baby?"
I looked at Shawn who slowly tucked his head down behind the paper he was holding and rolled my eyes. "Honestly, I'm not even surprised. You're on a juice ban for a week!"
"Is this for real, Hunter?"
"Yes, yes… it's for real. We talked about it and I'm okay with it."
"You're okay with having a baby? You know it's a nudge, right?"
"A nudge?" I asked as I watched Shawn in the corner of my eye taking all the juice he could hold out of the fridge.
"She wants a ring, not a baby…" The amused silver haired man whispered. "Is this wedding bells I hear?"
"Oh come on." I dismissed him. "That's not it." I said as I tried to hold my laughter in watching Shawn slowly making his exit with a few packs of juice almost falling to the floor. "Now, Shawn, you know this few boxes will only last for a few hour and I'm going shopping tomorrow which means NO JUICE FOR A WEEK!" I called as he disappeared through the back door.
Kevin chuckled and brought my attention back to him. "That woman is madly in love with you. You know it and I know it, hell everybody knows it. She loves Rory to death, she feeds us and tolerates us all day and she stuck by you and your crazy mood swings. That woman is here to stay and I've got to tell you, man, I'm not sure I want to imagine your life without her. Trust me, I've been there, you're no fun when you're grumpy and moody."
"As much as I respect you and appreciate everything you all do for me, this is something I have to do on my own time." I tried to end that crazy conversation.
"Okay." Kevin raised his hands in defeat. "I'm not going to say another word about this. Just let me know when you need my ol' ball n' chain to go ring shopping with you." He grinned.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I'll be in the shower."
I went upstairs still rolling my eyes at Kevin's theory. It's been a while since I had a relationship and I did feel a little rusty. Of course thinking about the woman I was in a relationship with, made it more concerning. Renee was no ordinary woman. She was a lesbian who hated men and didn't really know how to be in a relationship with a man.
We were both complicated and hard to deal with, yet we made it work. Deep down inside, I knew I wanted to marry her, I just didn't think she was ready yet. As I let the hot water wash the long day away, I smiled. Kevin's theory was starting to make sense with every minute that passed. That crazy old monster was too sharp for me to ignore him.
Maybe she does want a ring. Maybe it was just a nudge. Even so, I have to put someone on that and snoop around her crazy Canadian head. Shawn will probably spill the bean right away. The man is the farthest thing from discreet I know. Kevin could be right for this task, but he'll just gloat if I ask him to find out what she really thinks and Tammy is no good because she would just tell Kevin.
The way I saw it, I had only one option. Dally. I can always trust Dally to be discreet and not tell anyone. I decided to talk to him after dinner and see what he thinks.
We all gathered around the big dining table as Renee raised her glass and smiled. "I just want to say a few words before we all sit down, if you don't mind. I asked you all here tonight for 2 reasons. The first is basically to say thank you for accepting me into your little tribe and making me feel at home. The second reason is to maybe start a new tradition and have dinner together at least once a week."
I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and smiled. Kevin winked at me and I knew exactly what was going on through his wicked mind.
Later that night, I was already in bed when my crazy Canadian waltzed in. "I think this night was a success. I love having everyone around."
"It was a nice evening." I agreed as she climbed into bed and kissed me.
"I'm happy you have such great friends. It's amazing how you are all so different, but you fit perfectly. Make's me wish I had such good friends."
"I'm sure you do, but hey, you have us now and you fit in perfectly with the crazy bunch."
She smacked my chest playfully and rested her head on my shoulder. "Can I ask you a serious question that I know will annoy you?"
"Why would you want to annoy me?" I laughed.
"Come on, Hunter."
"Okay, just keep in mind though, that if you really annoy me, there's a chance you'll have to settle for cuddling tonight because there won't be any action for you. So think carefully before you ask…"
"Yeah, yeah… this threat doesn't work, because all I have to do is just take my clothes off." She grinned and got on top of me. "So, here it goes. I think I know what I want for Christmas."
Oh shit. Here we go. If she's going to say she wants a diamond ring or a diamond anything I'm punching Kev in the face the next time I see him, for not warning me sooner! "Oh boy. I'm listening."
"I want to see a live show." She said and waited for me to react?
"A live show? Like Broadway? Ballet? A concert?" I grinned even though I knew exactly what she was asking for. It was just a matter of time. I knew how it felt. I used to bug my dad about it my entire childhood. The diamond jewelry was looking pretty good to me right now. I thought as I looked into her beautiful eyes.
The feisty blond facing me just discovered this great thing called wrestling and seeing that sparkle in her eyes when she asked, I knew I had to take her. I knew that Rory was fascinated about it just as much as she was. It used to be my life. It meant everything to me. I could still smell the mat and I could still hear their roar. It was addictive and it was all I ever wanted to do my entire life.
She pouted as she listen to me suggest theater. "Come on, Hunter, you know what I mean. Rory would love it too."
"Please don't talk about my daughter while you're sitting on my…" I was cut off by the feel of her pelvis grinding on my erection. That woman knew exactly how to get me to say yes to things.
"You like this?" She smiled as she kept moving slowly rubbing her warm center against my hardness. "Say yes, baby, you know you want to."
"You are evil. How did you get so damn bad?" I nearly whispered as I closed my eyes and felt her warm body on mine. Her lips crashed against my neck as she kept rubbing herself against me. Her hands traveled down my bare chest and under my boxers. I felt her smile as she bit on my neck and sucked on it gently. She was loving every minute of this torture.
It wasn't long before she unveiled my growing excitement and grabbed it with her delicate hands. The first time she touched it felt weird for both of us, but as the days went by, she got used to that feeling and I was glad she was okay about it. I felt her worm moist on the tip right before she leaned down and I was fully inside her.
That woman was good. As I let her control the pace, I realized I've created a monster. I was surprisingly keeping up with her hunger and was into it just as much as she was. I couldn't get enough of her and the more we made love, the more I became addicted to all of her. Her touch, her soft skin, her sounds, everything about her drove me mad. As I laid there, listening to her moaning softly, I knew I was going to say yes to everything she'd ever ask of me.
Deep into the night, as she was sleeping in my arms, I got to thinking about the last days of my wrestling career. Everything was perfect in my life. I had a wife, a beautiful baby girl and the best job in the world. It would be weird to enter an arena again after so long. It would be even weirder to be back stage and not prepare to go out of gorilla and hear my song play again.
The boxes were all in storage at the Titan Towers. I wondered how it would feel to tape my fingers and my wrists again. I wondered if the rush of standing in the middle of a ring and listening to the sounds of the crowd would still be there. I did it all for them. Without the fans there would never be Hunter Hearst Helmsley. As I said those words in my head over and over again, my heart started racing.
My memories guided me in the dark to the first time Shawn ever called me Triple H. I thought it was the coolest nickname ever and was always happy to spend time with someone as talented as Shawn. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss those Kliq days. The long rides from town to town, the never ending wrestling conversations. We all loved the business and we all said we would do it forever.
Look at me now. I don't even know if I can hit the ropes. I'm just a shadow of the man I used to be. If only I could be strong enough for one last time. Renee was right. The fans deserve this. They made me the king I was. They loved me and hated me, but they all cared every time I stepped out to entertain them. They appreciated the sacrifices I made and my hard work. They deserve to see me one last time and have their proper goodbye.
As I slowly faded, I could still hear them in my head. It was in my blood. I could try to run from it, but I could never hide deep enough to forget the rush and the goosebumps. My friends and my beautiful woman are right. You can't escape who you are. I was and always will be Triple H.
Will the great King of Kings make his unexpected return?
Was Kevin right about wedding bells?
Thank you for reading.
I would love to get your thoughts :)
