Chapter Thirty-Eight:
Emma:
She is having lunch in one of the classrooms, so she can have some privacy when she talks with her parents. The teacher in the room allowed it and showed her how to video chat with them on Lily's phone. Before that happens, she needs to call Dean to set up the surprise for Lily and Roman. Everything is ready to be presented to them. She looks through the phone to find his number.
"Lily?" Dean answers a bit surprise that she would call now. He knows that she is at work.
"Hi Uncle Dean." Emma speaks.
"Oh, hi sweetheart, what are doing with Lily's phone?" He is more surprise to hear Emma's voice.
"Mommy wants all of us to have a family lunch, but they are at work. We are going to video chat in a few minutes." Emma explains.
"Ah, so you are using Lily's phone for that."
"Yes Uncle Dean."
"Now, why are you calling me now? Do you miss me and your Auntie Renee?" He chuckles a bit.
"Of course, I miss the stories you would tell me about mommy. When you are not there, mommy sings to me. I wish you two could join as a team to tell me a story and then sing me to sleep." She requests.
"I would but Renee needs me to tell her and the baby stories too. Why doesn't your father tell the stories and Lily sings afterwards?" Dean tells her an alternate request.
"He doesn't have too many stories about Lily." Emma tells him.
"But he does have stories about Bella. You can have stories about your first mommy and then have your new mommy sing to you. As you fall asleep, you can dream about them and daddy." He tries to let her down gently knowing he can't always tell her stories.
"That's good idea, Uncle Dean. I will suggest that to them, thanks."
"You're welcome. Now, anything else you need to talk to me about?" He asks.
"Yup, mommy and daddy said we are going to your house for something. I think this is the time to show them the surprise." Emma tells him.
"Okay, everything is set, so I don't know the reason why we can't. Are you sure you don't know the reason you three are coming over?" Usually Lily calls first to give him a heads up.
"No Uncle Dean, they just said before we left the house that we are going there."
"Okay, I will see you then. Bye sweetheart."
"Bye Uncle Dean, see you later."
Emma hangs up the phone as she gets ready for her lunch with her parents. She takes her princess, Belle, lunch box from her school bag. She sets the phone in front of her with the stand, so she doesn't have to hold it. After everything is set, she calls her father's phone. After the third ring, Emma sees Roman on the screen.
"Hi daddy." She waves to him.
"Hi princess, how is your school?" He asks. They are in Seth's office, so they can have their own privacy. Roman is beside Seth's comfy chair, so Lily can sit there. She called him at the unit to have the chair first, even though he would give it to her if she asked.
"It is good. I played with some dolls, drew a picture, and had a puppet show. I got to be the princess puppet." She smiles big being proud to be it.
"Well of course, my daughter is always the princess." He smiles.
"Daddy, stop it." She blushes.
"Never, my daughter is going to be spoiled with compliments throughout her whole life." He smiles at his daughter's embarrassment.
"Thanks daddy, where is mommy?" She is surprise that she is not the first person she sees. She did this for her, so she wouldn't be so sad.
"She is in the restroom she will be back soon. Now, what do you have for lunch?" He asks seeing if she has the better lunch.
"Let's see. I have my favourite sandwich, peanut butter and jelly, some vegetables with ranch dressings, cheese and crackers, a juice box, a yogurt with a spoon and two chocolate cookies for dessert." She shows each one of them to her father.
"That sounds good. You will finish your vegetables right?" He reminds her of the agreement they made.
"Absolutely, now what do you have?" She tries to look at his food through the screen.
Roman grabs a paper bag that is supposed to be Lily's lunch. "Let's see. I have an apple and water." He is surprise that is all he got while she got a full lunch course.
Emma tries not to laugh. "That is all you have daddy, what happen? Did you eat the food at break?" She covers her mouth with her hand as she chuckles.
"No, but why would she pack me just this? It is not like I need to lose weight. Baby girl, you don't think I look fat, do you?"
"Of course not." She puts on a straight face.
Before Roman replies back to her, Lily walks in.
"Oh is that our daughter? Hi sweetie, how is school?" She sits in the comfy chair beside Roman. She smirks at him while she gets comfortable; he just rolls his eyes.
"Hi mommy, school is good I got to be a princess puppet." She takes a bite out of her sandwich.
"They picked the right person for the job considering that you are our princess." She smiles at her while she opens her lunch. Roman is confused as a result that he thought that was his lunch. If that is hers, where is his?
"Thanks mommy, daddy said the same thing." She is now eating her cheese and crackers.
"Did you like the lunch I packed for you?" She asks now opening Roman's lunch bag. He is now more confused not remembering getting a lunch bag for himself.
"I did, but I don't think daddy likes his." She takes another bite out of her sandwich.
"Why not, I made him his favourite?" She looks at him. "You don't like the lunch I packed you?" She pouts.
"Well no, due to that is just an apple and water." He points to the paper bag.
"Oh baby, that is my lunch." She takes out the apple and water. "This is your lunch." She hands him his lunch. "Remember, I got you a lunch bag yesterday, so you won't carry too much brown bags." She reminds him.
"Oh right." He gently slaps his forehead. "I think daddy is starting to become slow, princess." He tells her.
"Oh daddy, what are we going to do with you?" She giggles.
"I know." Lily agrees with their daughter.
"So, what do you really have, daddy?" She asks sipping her juice box.
"I have water, apples, some vegetables without ranch dressings-" He looks at Lily who just shrugs. "With my favourite barbecue chicken wings with dipping sauce." He smells the container with the wings. "Thanks baby." He pecks her.
"Aww, see daddy mommy takes care of us. She knows how to make excellent lunches just like first mommy did." She smiles now eating the vegetables as she dips them into the ranch.
They tense up a bit, unnoticed by Emma. They know that they have to have the talk sooner than later.
"Princess?" Roman asks as he takes a big gulp of water.
"Yes daddy." She speaks normal still unaware of the tension from her parents.
"Do you mind staying with Uncle Dean for awhile?"
"Yah, we are all going later, right?" She is almost finished with her vegetables.
"Well, Lily and I need to talk about something in private. So, you are the only one staying at Dean's." Roman explains softly and cautiously.
"Oh." Emma a bit down that she is the only one staying at Dean's. "Did I do something wrong?" She is now a bit concern knowing that nothing comes good of having her parents be alone like this. They usually, if it is a good thing, trick her to go to Dean's house.
"No princess, but we need to talk about something, okay." He tries to say in a soft tone that will comfort her.
"Okay daddy." She says blinking her eyes rapidly.
"Emma, please don't cry. This conversation will not interrupt anything; we are still becoming a family. I'm still going to marry Lily and be there for the baby. It is just we need to have the conversation before continuing our happy lives." He looks at Lily, who also has tears in her eyes. He takes her into his chest to comfort her. "I wish I was there too, princess, so I can give you a comfort hug." He tells his daughter.
"I wish that to daddy I really need one." She rubs her arms.
"Here, maybe this will help." Lily sends a text message to her phone.
Emma doesn't see her parents on the screen until she gets a text message on the phone she is using. She opens the message, which is a picture message. The picture is them at the water park; Lily has her arms down Emma's shoulders, Emma holds her arms with Roman holding his girls from behind. Below it says 'Our princess, the strongest daughter we know. We love you and care for you always.' Emma brushes her tears that have fallen when she was reading the message. "Thanks mommy and daddy." She smiles her perfect smile.
"You're welcome princess. We love you." Lily blows her a kiss through the screen.
"I love you too. I will see you when you pick me up." She blows a kiss back. Lily and Roman both take half of the kiss to place it in their hearts.
Before they sign off, Emma waves bye to her parents before Lily and Roman wave back at her. As soon as that happens, there is a page for Roman.
"That must be the heart. I have to be in the OR. I won't be able to make break, so I hope this will cover for that time." He kisses her passionately on the lips. As it intensifies, Roman takes her to the couch to lay her down. They rub each other's body underneath their scrubs to feel the heat of their bodies. After about a minute, Roman lets go after giving her one deeper kiss. "I will see you when I'm done surgery." He fixes his clothes before heading to the door.
"I'll be waiting." Lily stands up to straighten her clothes.
Roman looks back at her fixing her hair. "Damn, my baby looks beautiful." He winks at her as she giggles.
After he leaves, she packs up their lunches before she fixes Seth's desk. Seth warns them that they can move his valuables if they put them back. In a few minutes, Lily double checks the desk before leaving the office to put their lunches away.
Around 3:30, Roman is still in surgery with Seth and the head of Pediatrics. Seth's fiancé is the nurse that relates the condition of the surgery to the family; every an hour and a half to two hours. They just got the old heart out being 100% sure that everything is set to take it out. When they take out the new heart, Roman sees what time it is. Seth also sees the time and knows that Emma is off now.
"Dr. Reigns, are you going to continue?" Chief Seth asks knowing that he and Lily are supposed to pick her up together.
"Yes sir, Nurse Rollins, can you tell Nurse Garcia to go ahead to pick up Emma? I will still be an hour or two."
"Yes doctor." She leaves the OR to relay that information to her.
"Are you sure Dr. Reigns?" He looks at his expression to give him confirmation.
"Yes, Chief Rollins." He says confidently. "Now, let us save this child's life." He smiles through his surgical mask.
Emma's school:
Lily tries to get there as soon as well as safely as she can. When she gets there, Emma is by herself at the parent's pick up spot, swinging her legs. She tried to call her father, but there is no answer. She doesn't want to call their units because it is only for an emergency. After a few minutes of waiting, Emma starts to tear up having her anxiety act back up that something bad happen to them.
"Emma!" Lily calls out while she runs to her.
"Mommy!" She wipes her tears as she runs to her.
"Oh princess, we are so sorry we are late." She hugs her tight. "Daddy was called for surgery after our video chat. We should have not balance time knowing that it wouldn't be done before we picked you up." She kisses her head.
"I'm just glad you two are okay." In a relieve tone. "I thought something bad happened to you two." She brushes more of her tears.
"Your anxiety is coming back, isn't it?" Lily brings her to see her face.
Emma nods. "Can we go back to the hospital to see daddy work?"
"I don't know sweetie. No one, but workers are allowed in the viewing window." She sweetly explains.
"Okay." She rests her head on her mother's shoulder.
Lily ponders a bit. "There might be an alternative." She smiles at her. "Come on lets go." She holds her daughter's hand to walk to the car.
Back at the Hospital:
Lily and Emma are at security. They hope they could show them the live video of the OR. They accepted after getting the approval from Chief Seth.
"Here you go princess. Daddy is on the left while Uncle Seth is across from him." She puts her on her lap as they watch.
"Is this the VIP patient daddy is always talking about?" Emma asks intrigue with her father's work. She has heard stories, but hasn't seen it live.
"It is princess. Now, he said he might be an hour or two, so you are okay to wait and watch." Emma doesn't answer being too intrigued to actually get to watch the surgery. "Emma?"
"Yah." She shakes her head.
"I asked if you are okay to wait, but I already got my answer." She giggles.
"Yup I can. This is interesting; can you tell me what they are doing?" She asks Lily.
"Sure." She starts explaining the process as it is showed on the screen. Emma gets more and more excited to hear and see what is happening.
Around 4:30, they are testing the heart to see if it beats on its own. They have double checked the vessels and arteries to make sure they are correctly attached.
"What are they doing?" She just sees them look at the heart.
"They are checking if the heart beats by itself before they close up." She explains.
After a minute, still nothing happens. "Nothing is happening." Emma confused that the heart is still not beating. She thought it would be beating already.
"Just wait princess."
After a few more seconds, the heart starts beating.
Emma jumps a bit. "Oh my…mommy…" She looks at her. "Mommy it is beating they did it." She is so surprise that her daddy does this for a living.
"Yes princess, they did it." She is excited from her excitement.
"That is cool, are they done now? Can we see them?" She asks excited to congratulate them.
"Yeah we can, but we have to wait in the lobby." Lily tells her as she carries her out of the room. "But we have to say thank you to the nice security guards."
"Okay, please let me down." Lily puts her down, so she can walk to the guards. "Thank you for letting us see the video." He hugs the first guard. "Thank you for showing me what my daddy does." He hugs the other guard.
"You are welcome Emma, have a good day." They both say as she smiles at them.
20 minutes later, Roman enters the lobby with his valuables.
"Daddy!" Emma runs to him.
"Oh my princess, I'm sorry for not picking you up." He hugs her tight.
"It is okay daddy we were watching your surgery." She smiles her perfect smile. No matter what mood they are in her smile brightens their lives.
"Were you?" He looks at Lily. "And how did you watch my surgery? You know you aren't supposed to be in the viewing area."
"We were watching in the security room. They were nice enough to let us watch it there." She explains to him.
"Ah, well are you ready to go home or do you want to go straight to Dean's?" Roman asks his daughter.
"Uncle Dean's, so you can finish your conversation faster. Also, can you tell Uncle Seth that he did a great job in the surgery too? It was very intriguing to watch your work, daddy." She asks.
"I sure can." He tickles her stomach.
She giggles. "Let's go." She points to the door.
They all laugh while walking to the door.
Dean's house:
Roman knocks on the door. They hear giggling and sweet sayings behind the door.
Emma titters. "Sound like they are having fun."
"Are you sure you want to stay now with them?" Roman questions not sure right now to drop her here.
"Yes daddy, don't worry about me. The sooner I'm here, the sooner you can finish your conversation." Emma this time knocks on the door. "Uncle Dean, we are here."
After a minute, Dean opens the door with Renee in his arms. "Hi guys didn't know you will be here this early." He hugs Renee tighter.
"We can come back if we interrupted your fun." Roman winks to Dean.
"No it is okay, we just felt the baby kick. I was tickling her and the baby girl kicked where my hand was. I wanted to feel it again, so I kept tickling her while saying I love you to both of them." Dean explains.
"Yeah, we kind of heard you." He chuckles. "I can't wait until our baby does that." He wraps an arm around Lily.
"Yup it is going to be amazing." She rubs his arm.
"So, Auntie Renee, can I feel it?" Emma speaks up excited.
"Absolutely, you all can come in." They step aside.
"Actually, we are here to just drop our princess here. We need to have a serious conversation alone." He now said seriously.
"Oh." Dean is in shock and concerned for them. "Is everything okay?"
"Yup, it is just we need this out in the open to continue our happy lives. We just need to clarify something no need to worry about anything." Roman smiles to them.
Dean is not convinced that there is nothing wrong. "Lily?"
"Dean, it is okay. We just need to clarify a situation, but no worries we still love each other. We are still getting married and having the baby." Lily says to ease her best friend's fear.
"Certainly." Dean still not convinced, but will let it go for now.
Roman kneels down to his daughter's level. "Emma, you know the drill. We will be back as soon as we finish." He kisses her forehead.
"Gladly daddy, take your time. I want to get back to happy times." She affectionately hugs him being concern of their conversation.
"We will sweetie." Lily says as she brushes away her tears.
"Oh mommy, don't cry. I love you." She comforts her mother.
"I love you too."
"Okay, see you soon." Roman waves by to his daughter.
"Bye mommy. Bye daddy. See you later." Emma waves back with Dean's arm over her shoulder.
At the car:
"Are you ready to finish this conversation, so we can get back on track?" Roman asks holding her hand in the car.
"Absolutely, we need this. No matter what happens I love you." She kisses his hand.
"Me too, no matter what I will always love you." He kisses her hands and then pecks her cheek.
