My Friend
My Best Friend
Chapter 36 Epi
The day was clear and sunny, the first in a few weeks. It was perfect for what Jasper had planned. He was only going to be a few moments, much longer and he would have a catastrophe in his hands. He took a seat on the damp grass and laid the flowers down carefully, lilies and daises, his mother's favorite.
"Hey, I'm back, it was actually longer than I had anticipated. I just had a lot of things to get together before I could come back. I sure miss you guys something awful. Mamma, some days I just wanted to curl up and cry like when I was little and hope that you would come and ask me what had me so out of wack, like you used to say. But I pulled through. Daddy I did what I said I was going to do. It was hell at times but I did it, I pulled through. I think you would be proud of the man I've become."
Jasper took a moment to collect himself before he continued. He had so many things he wanted to share with his parents that he couldn't figure out which one to spit out first, so he decided that he would talk to them of his pride and joy.
"I married Edward a while back. He's on his last year of residency and he's working at the same hospital as Carlisle. He wants to open his own practice. He specializes in pediatric surgery. As for me, I'm a decorated officer in the army now, I have my own team and I love my job, just like you did daddy."
Jasper's attention was caught by a loud squeal and laughter. He turned just in time to catch the small body that launched itself at him.
"Hey crazy woman, where's your daddy?" he asked the little bundle of energy in his arms.
"Sorry, J. I couldn't keep up." Jasper looked up at his husband with adoration.
"That's okay E. I was just about done." He looked back at the small body that squirmed in his lap. "This here is Sarah Esme Cullen Whitlock. A mouth full I know but it fits just right. I know I said I wouldn't be able to pass the Whitlock name down, but your genius of a daughter figured out how to do it. She offered to be a surrogate mother for our baby. After Rosie had EJ, she asked if we thought about having kids, of course at the time we were too young for kids, but she left the offer on the table. You have no idea how much I love being a father. It's like I was happy when it was just me and Edward, but when we finally had her in our arms, our whole world changed. I have the perfect family…for now."
"Daddy, what this, daddy?" Sarah pointed at the two tombstones they sat in front of.
"This darling is a tribute to the two most wonderful people in the world." He kissed her chubby cheek and quickly blow a raspberry, making Sarah break out in a fit of giggles.
"Top daddy, I pitty…" she jumped up flattening her dress with her little hands.
"I'm sorry baby, daddy just couldn't resist." Jasper laughed as she walked over and took Edwards hand. Edward watched the exchange loving every second of it. Jasper took to parenting like a fish to water; it came so easy to him. It was like his eyes had never seen a single act of violence in his life or felt a moment of sorrow, just happiness and love.
"Daddy I want numnum."
"Okay baby let's go. Daddy's done now." Jasper kissed his daughters head and handed her to Edward, who took her to the car. But before Jasper left he turned back to the two headstones one last time.
"Thank you mom and dad, for showing me what real love should look like and for letting me find it even if it wasn't what most would consider normal. I hope you can rest easy knowing that my life is complete and meaningful. I know I have a long way to go and so many things to experience but at least I know that I found my other half to share them with. So I think this will be the last time I come here to visit you. I will always have you in my thoughts and in my heart."
As he walked away he watched as his daughter played in a swirl of leaves and Edward laughed. When Jasper reached her he thought he smelled lavender.
"Did you use a new shampoo on her babe?" Jasper asked Edward after they had settled their daughter in her car sit and buckled their seatbelts.
"No, just the usual. Why?" Jasper looked up at the sky through the window and smiled.
"No reason."
Jasper and Edward lived a long happy life together. After Sarah, Rose carried one more child for them, Anthony Hale Whitlock Cullen, and they adopted two more kids, James and Jane. They had in total ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren when they passed away. Jasper died at ninety-five when he went into surgery from an old battle wound and Edward passed away within two weeks. They say Edward went to bed one night after he enjoyed a nice dinner with his whole family, when Sarah came in with his vitamins the next morning he was gone. In his hand were two wedding bands and a photo of him and Jasper on their wedding day. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, even though he was in great health. His children say that without one the other would never exist, so Edward followed the love of his life.
The End
I hope the end was a fitting one for the boys. I do have a couple of outtakes that I hope to start posting in the near future. Thank you to everyone that came along for the ride. I hope you guys enjoyed reading Jasper and Edward's love story as much as I enjoyed writing it. I want to thank the person that made my words make sense, Thank you to my beta, Margit, for putting up with me and my wacky schedule, without her this story would be nothing more than a jumbled mess. Thanks M.
